2012: An image or two …. April

The first version of this included PBO slow-jamming – which NBC blocked – and an entirely different tune that actually fit the pics. 😦 Oh well.

I just spent some time tonight talking to my friend about him – because she received some of his lectures as a Christmas gift. We were fighting over who liked him more! I saw one of his lectures to younger children once and was deeply impressed because all he wanted to do was get them excited about science, as he had been given that opportunity. (The only negative from him for me was when he thought he was going to be nominated by PBO as NASA Administrator in the first term, and when he wasn’t, he kinda turned on PBO a little … but never heard another negative about him after that. I try to forget these things, because they’re all based on their egos, but it’s a little hard when “friends” turn on him.)

Thanks for confirming that – I was beginning to wonder if I were thinking about the wrong guy. I don’t remember his exact badmouthing as much as didn’t he become a PUMA after that? Oh, well, I’m supposed to be healing those wounds for myself, leaving them behind!

    • 64 majiir
      December 30, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Hannity’s program is a case of the uninformed leading the uniformed. He didn’t have what it took to finish college, and he has no background in politics. It’s amazes me that people waste their time listening to him make sh*t up and read it off a TelePrompTer. If I were a republican, after November 6, I’d be finished with Fox News.

Meant to type, It amazes me.
Yep, only in America can one get rich by feeding a steady stream of lies to gullible people, GGail, only in America. All of the hosts on Fox and others like Limbaugh, Medved and Jones have made a fortune telling uninformed Americans the things they want to hear. Trashing PBO and his policies has definitely put more money in their bank accounts. If I had a well at my house in the desert, I wouldn’t give them a sip of water if they were passing by. I’d tell them “I built this, go dig your own well.” I’d give them a taste of their own medicine.

Maybe they finally figured it that Sean, Bill-O, and all the others are millionaires and don’t give a crap about them and wants the GOTP to privatize their SS and Medicare.

      • 68 nathkatun7
        December 31, 2012 at 1:58 am

Yes Indeed, Jojothecat. All of these right wing talk show hosts are multi-millionaires. They don’t have to worry about the cost of healthcare. They can retire comfortably without Social Security. Sadly (and may be even tragically), their followers are the ones who would suffer if the policies that these right winger talk show hosts advocate were enacted into law. A good example is Rush Limbaugh who poses as an advocate of family values. If I am not mistaken he is now on his third (or is it fourth) marriage. He is also a certified drug user/abuser. He can afford all these idiosyncrasies because he also happens to earn millions of dollars in salaries every year. For a person who gets paid a $4,000,000 year salary, privatizing SS or Medicare would absolutely have zero impact on him and his family. But he is clever enough to subliminally use some race baiting to whip his listeners into a frenzy to oppose President Obama and the Democrats.

Of course this is nothing new in the history of American politics. After all, a very small minority of Southern Slave owners were able to convince the vast majority of Southern whites who did not own slaves to support the war of secession whose sole purpose was the protection and preservation of slavery.

      December 30, 2012 at 7:14 pm

      Betty–

President Obama offered to raise it to $400,000. Boehner proposed to raise it to one million, but he couldn’t get his House Republicans to vote for it. Doesn’t seem to matter to them what the offer is. They will say “no” no matter what.

IF OBAMA IS FOR IT, WE HAD TO BE AGAINST IT

Gregory: “What is it about you, Mr. President, that you think is so hard to say yes to?”

    By smartypants

    ———————————-

I don’t expect journalists to have degrees in history. But I do think that the least we should be able to expect from someone like David Gregory is that, when interviewing the President of the United States, he isn’t completely oblivious to the recorded facts about the Republican Party’s strategy developed just 4 years ago.

And yet this morning on Meet the Press, David Gregory completely ignored those facts and asked, “What is it about you, Mr. President, that you think is so hard to say yes to?”

I’d like to recommend some reading material to Mr. Gregory. The Republican Party’s strategy since the day of President Obama’s inauguration has been well documented. But perhaps nowhere more thoroughly than by Michael Grunwald. Here’s how Ohio Senator George Voinovich summarized it:

  29. December 30, 2012 at 7:23 pm

UTAustin, congrats on #1. Seems like I’ve seen you in that position many times recently. Well-deserved kudos.

FYI, @BuzzFeedAndrew is conservative, but he’s young and educated, so he’s not a RWNJ bigoted against people who aren’t exactly like him.

“But despite having internships for two House members and the Republican National Committee on his resume, Mr. Kazcynski decided to go take the non-partisan route in journalism.”
    http://observer.com/2011/12/buzzfeed-hires-andrew-kaczynski-oppenheimer-of-political-videos/

“Kaczynski describes himself as a moderate Republican.”
    http://nymag.com/news/intelligencer/andrew-kaczynski-2011-12/

I guess he’s conservative in the same way as Andrew Sullivan is, who linked to this article yesterday, which explains why the GOP refuses to make a deal:
“For Republicans, losing the political fight isn’t a downside of the strategy. It is the strategy.”

          December 31, 2012 at 2:27 am

Hear, hear, majiir! There is absolutely no reason why a supposedly good dancer can’t also be an ethical journalist. If Gregory thinks he can’t be both a good dancer and an ethical journalist then he needs to retire from journalism. In my book, David Gregory sucks as a journalist. He is always regurgitating the Republican talking points whenever he questions Democrats. He did the same today with President Obama. Since I have not observed his dancing skills I am going to trust members of TOD who claim that he is a good dancer. So, he may be a good dancer, but he is a despicable, deceitful, journalist.

Thank you for this comment, nathkatun7. David Gregory is a rude, distasteful, deceitful, jealous, person who has yet to give respect to President Obama. I do not like him, and I certainly do not like how he constantly bashing the president.

Karma will visit David Gregory for all of his ugly and disrespectful ways to this president. Admit it people, call these people for who and what they are and stand for concerinng President Obama.

President is being very professional, polite, and respectful because that is his core of who he is as a man as surely as our president, but I am not the president, and I will say what POTUS can’t say in his position.

Out of respect that I’d show for any patient, I’ll not offer specifics on the likely nature of her situation other than to say that some of the stuff I’ve seen in tweets makes no sense, medically. Given the nature of her injury and the time delay before admission to the hospital this afternoon, any reasonably well trained physician, or medical care provider, would know what the differential diagnosis is, and what needs to be done (diagnostic radiology and intervention). She is at an outstanding medical institution. She’ll receive the best care imaginable.

True Lootenant. I only speak from my experience from extensive brain surgery I had to remove a brain tumor that covered half my brain. It had been with me a looong time and took quite a bit of time to manifest itself into external signs. That is to say that cranial problems are not open and shut events.

                • December 30, 2012 at 9:49 pm

So glad you recovered, sailor!!!!! And, you are correct. Anything involving the brain is a big deal and much can happen, if it evolves slowly, before any symptoms emerge.

It’s truly a blessing, yardarm, that you were able to survive from a brain tumor through surgery. We were not so fortunate with our 14 year-old daughter The problem was that her tumor was lodged between the stem of her brain and the spinal cord. She underwent surgery but the surgeon was not able to remove all the tumor. Neither did radiation and chemotherapy. She passed away, two years later, at 16.

From the Bloomberg article that Arapaho referenced above, this stuck out like a klaxon:

The California Republican Party has shown over the past two decades that kicking and screaming and being unreasonable can help secure a cozy minority of legislative seats with a true-believing party base behind you. It’s a strategy that works. It’s just not a strategy that works for building electoral majorities.

So, yes, please national GOP, be like the CA GOP. It now only holds 1/3 of the seats in the CA legislature, so it is basically irrelevant. But if you just want to grift to suck off the public teat, then it’s a great strategy for those who can get the work.

Hi Chips & TOD’s, I’m mostly a lurker but I was wondering if I could get you to sign my WH Petition about the Debt Ceiling just to show we support the President NOT NEGOTIATING until after the Debt Ceiling hike because Fitch & Moody said they will downgrade us again over that. Here’s the info:

    http://wh.gov/Ui6m

Here’s some more information about this petition:

DO NOT NEGOTIATE w/GOP OVER DEBT CEILING LIFT; UP OR DOWN VOTE ONLY

Sen Bob Corker has written a Bill that shreds Social Security & Medicare & Medicaid similar to the Ryan Budget. He plans to extract this concession by refusing to lift Debt Ceiling until Bill is passed. http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/272623-corker-introduces-bill-trading-entitlement-cuts-for-debt-ceiling-hike Fitch & Moody Credit Rating Agencies Say they will downgrade our Credit Rating if another Debt Ceiling fight occurs, per CnnMoney. It would also halt the Recovery if the Cliff Negotiations have not already done so. Tell Sen Corker & Fix the Debt & the GOP, NO Negotiating. The Debt Ceiling should be lifted by Vote as it always was until President Obama was elected. The Tea Party Cuts Are Killing the Economy.

Concussions are DANGEROUS…..and a blodclot after a concussion is doubly dangerous. When will those RW hacks and infotainers grow up and admit that genuine illness happens to people, and NOT EVERYONE lies and plays events for political purposes!!!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate on Sunday approved prominent antitrust attorney William Baer to head the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division 10 months after he was tapped by President Barack Obama.

The Senate voted 64-26 to approve Baer’s nomination, which ran into problems with some Republicans because of secret information in an FBI background report.

Baer, an antitrust and white collar criminal defense attorney with the law firm Arnold & Porter LLP, has worked in the past for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

“Bill is a highly-skilled and well-respected antitrust lawyer who understands the importance of promoting competition in order for consumers to reap the benefits of lower prices and better quality products and services,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement welcoming the Senate vote.

The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division, along with the FTC, reviews mergers to ensure they comply with antitrust law and prosecutes price-fixing and other antitrust violations.

THIS IS NO WAY RUN A DEMOCRACY

    Senate showdown set for Monday

    By Steve Benen

    ———————–

Imagine that. Republicans were, in effect, arguing, “We’ll raise middle class taxes unless Democrats accept Social Security cuts.” It would seem “not a winning hand” is an understatement.

But while the GOP’s shift in posture helped keep the talks from collapsing entirely, the remaining areas of disagreement — estate taxes, the sequester, extending jobless benefits, a debt-ceiling extension — have not been, and may ultimately not be, resolved.

With this in mind, the stage has been set for an interesting Senate showdown tomorrow.

Tomorrow Harry Reid and PBO are going to put the hammer to the Rs. Pass the tax cut for the middle class and extend unemployment benefits or face the American people and explain why you’ve raised their taxes.

    • December 30, 2012 at 11:36 pm

In a series – years and years – of big mistakes. I don’t know when I’ve heard of anything as pathetic, politically, and I’ve been following politics since I was in high school in the 1960s.

  77. December 30, 2012 at 11:32 pm

In a tremendous irony, Republican requests for lower tax rates, a high estate tax threshold, and a permanent AMT fix; combined with Democratic requests to delay the sequester, include a “doc fix” for Medicare physicians, and extend emergency unemployment benefits; have left the parties negotiating toward a plan that would result in no net deficit reduction over 10 years, according to Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin.

‘ House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appears to command more votes in the “fiscal cliff” negotiations than the speaker of the House, Republican John Boehner of Ohio.

That’s because the San Francisco Democrat leads a unified caucus whose votes will be needed to pass any deal to avert more than $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts come Jan. 1.

Boehner’s Republicans, by contrast, are rebellious and fractured, having abandoned their leader. ‘

from the santa fe new mexican op ed:

‘ As a Western state where rural traditions are strong, including gun owning and hunting, favoring rights for gun owners has been a popular stance in our state. Many of our elected officials also hunt and shoot guns for recreation. Right now, neither Udall nor Heinrich has backed an assault-weapons ban, one of the laws being discussed as a first step in gaining control over the nation’s gun violence. However, in light of the horrific shootings in Connecticut, it appears the delegation is open to persuasion. Voters must shout louder than the NRA and other gun lobbies for the persuasion to work. ‘

I just wanted to add a little something to the discussion:

I was watching a fauxnews clip online and hannity was referring to POTUS as the anointed one but in a sarcastic way….an laughing at the notion.
I believe that he is touched by God and this fiscal cliff debacle will end well by God’s Grace.

Just remember we have been through this things before. with healthcare and dadt and the gov shut down. These people will not succeed. They have failed and will continue to fail.

Their number one priority was to make
POTUS a one term president –failed
stall all democrat’s agenda and stop the economy from getting better — failed
keep unemployment rate high — failed
said POTUS weak on foreign policy — failed (how many dictators/ mass murderers have been bought to justice in just these 4 years?)
    stop DADT from passing –failed
Stop Obamacare from passing — failed
    Repeal Obamacare –failed
make Obamacare unconstitutional with the supreme court — failed

Now there are also those wolf in sheep clothing that pretend to support POTUS but really just love to give credit of his accomplishments to “other people”
remember when they were trying to push the narrative that clinton got POTUS reelected? LOL
now they want to do a Biden got the deal done.

Guys don’t worry, the TRUTH is the only thing that will stand the test of time.

beautiful, luna. the truth will indeed stand the test of time.

earlier today, there was some jabber about pbo being compared to lincoln, or to roosevelt, etc. these comparisons never fit because pbo is unique, he’s entirely new. as history unfolds, the question will be which subsequent president can be held up against pbo’s examle. he is hitting the high marks, and future presidents will aspire to his achievements; he has surpassed all those in the past. and he hasn’t even begun his second term! 🙂

Excellent observations, I am sure this will play out like so many of those situations did…in a GOP EPIC FAIL.

I lit a candle for both Hillary Clinton and President Obama. I have faith that we will have a good outcome, but it’s a shame and I pray for those that will be hurt by the republicans refusing to act on time.

yardam, thanks for the music. I love jazz. Did you watch Treme on HBO? They had some great jazz musicians come in and perform on the show.

Nice April video, especially the humor at the end. I confess I am at this point sick to death of the fiscal cliff. The drama has done me in. I lit a candle of thanks for President Obama and his endless patience. I lit one for Hillary Clinton and pray for her full recovery. As far as the negotiations go I trust the President will handle it with skill, he was great today on MTP – I didn’t stick around to listen to the talking heads. If we all have to hold hands, close our eyes and jump off the cliff together I have faith knowing that we have the best guy in charge who has planned for whatever contingency. Tomorrow nothing will stop me looking forward to a brand new year and a brand new term for Barack Obama. Here’s to 2013!
