This and That

President Obama meets with members of the Governors Association Executive Committee, including Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, December 4

Kevin Drum (Mother Jones): Here is PPP on their finding that 49 percent of Republicans think ACORN stole the election for Obama….

This is a modest decline, but perhaps smaller than might have been expected given that ACORN doesn’t exist anymore.

…. In other news, they found that 25 percent of Americans claim to have an opinion about the Panetta-Burns plan, which they just made up. Fun times.

Charles Pierce: …. the senior members of the Republican party reminded us today that, no matter how much lipstick they slather on the pig in order to fool the more credulous members of the courtier media, the heart of their party is still black and withered and smells of death and corruption.

…. This is what prevails when you scratch down beneath the pretty surface — a party so completely fking unhinged that it thinks that a treaty on the rights of disabled people is some sort of one-world plot to steal the liberty of a third-rate moron like Jim Inhofe. …. They simply do not care. Their prejudices and their paranoia must have pride of place over any help to be given to the less fortunate among us….

…. I can hardly wait for the next Beltway hummer in which Rubio is promoted as “the changing face of the Republican party.” They can’t stand up to the lunatic base because the lunatic base is all they have.

Steve Benen: Former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole made a rare Senate appearance this morning, sitting in a wheelchair just off the floor so that members would have to see him as they entered the chamber. Why? Because they were poised to vote on ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, and Dole hoped to send a message.

It didn’t work. The Senate killed the treaty this afternoon, with a final vote of 61 to 38, which seems like a lopsided majority, but which fell short of the two-thirds necessary for ratification. Eight Republicans broke ranks and joined Democrats in support of the treaty, but the clear majority of the Senate GOP voted to block it.

It would be really funny (I have an odd sense of humour) if Pres O’s name turned up in a couple of sections on one or two of your report cards! They all get read and signed by principal/vice principal, right?

CHIIIIPS! Don’t you think it’s a bit early for the TOD snowfall? 🙄

Also, Madam Mayoress, if you have deemed it time for the TOD snow to fall (without consulting the other members of TOD council) couldn’t you at least have started it on a more Christmas-y or more seasonal post? (Am beginning to think Amk has a point with his ‘tyrant’ comments, I may have to add ‘dictator-ess’ to his list.

          • December 4, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Haha! That would be funny! My principal is a moderate Republican who is disgusted with his party. He hated Romney and feared Ryan. I have no doubt he voted for our President! And with the way the Republicans are trying to tear about our public education system, I’m pretty sure he’s voting Democrat from now on!

“President Obama would be proud of your child’s progress” “President Obama suggests your child spends more time reading at home.” Great!

If he has a sense of humour, you could enter such a comment on your last report (having a real report for said student at hand, of course) and submit it. Would be a way to check if he reads them all before signing. [Don’t listen to me, Maryl. I tend to (sometimes) be a trouble maker much like my sister, Chips.]

Not at all, Theo; only thinking to brighten the principal’s boredom at having to read all those ‘smarmy’ comments, some of them couched in flowery language that does not at all describe the student’s progress/performance.

It’s breathtakingly shocking that they would vote against a disability bill and this just proves that there are no moderates in the GOP. They cite Rubio and Coburn as sane forward thinking faces of the future. Nope. They all reside in the cavemen era.

Easy enough for you to say, Theo, from way over and down there in Cally-fornie. After all, you won’t have to shovel the stuff! Snowiny Christmases still work if the snow falls on December 24, which is my personal preference.

                  December 4, 2012 at 8:46 pm

That’s definitely my personal chosen response to winter – a very sensible response I’ve always thought! However, can’t hole up inside much as I would like to, because I’m suddenly being called to work more frequently. I was in today, and they have already called me for tomorrow (couldn’t even wait until morning to do so). I got called three days last week too, so you see all these southern prayers for snow, snow and more snow are of concern to me. If I could work a deal where I ship it all to you prayerful southerners with a special delivery fixed up for LisaLoves, I would have no complains. So, go easy on the prayers, snow is mostly pretty when you can admire it and then ignore it.

    Busted!

The cranky old Senator has whipped himself into a lather over Susan Rice’s televised statements about the attack on the Benghazi consulate, accusing her of misleading the public because she did not immediately cite al Qaeda or a planned terrorist attack. She made those statements on September 16. And yet on September 22, McCain himself voted for a resolution that described the affair thus:

Olive Garden’s parent company is the latest to learn that it does not pay to mix politics with business:

“The restaurant company that owns the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains said Tuesday that its bottom line is suffering in part because because of opposition to President Obama’s health care law.

Darden Restaurants has rejected the requirement that employers provide health insurance to full-time workers and said it would cut employees’ hours to dodge the mandate under the Affordable Care Act, The Hill notes. That would force low-paid part-time workers to buy their own insurance or be covered by government-run exchanges staring in 2014.

Darden was just ranked among the 12 biggest companies paying workers the least.

The company cited several factors for a steep drop in business and earnings during the second quarter, including “financially stretched consumers,” failed promotions, Hurricane Sandy and the purchase of Yard House. But it also noted a possible backlash from Americans boycotting its 1,994 restaurants.
