McClatchy: President Obama assured labor unions and liberal organizations Tuesday that he’s firmly committed to letting tax cuts for higher incomes expire as scheduled at the end of the year….

Obama met with the labor and liberal groups for an hour at the White House, his first extended meeting with anyone from outside his administration since he won re-election a week ago. He told them he’s committed to raising taxes on higher incomes as he negotiates with Congress on avoiding the “fiscal cliff” of automatic tax increases when Bush-era tax cuts expire at the end of the year and automatic spending cuts negotiated during last year’s debt crisis kick in.

“President Obama today strongly reiterated his steadfast commitment to ensuring that the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2 percent finally end Dec. 31 and to protecting the middle class in the process,” said Justin Ruben, executive director of MoveOn.org….

Dana Milbank: President Obama’s opponents have unwittingly come up with a brilliant plan to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” They want to secede from the union.

If Obama were serious about being a good steward of the nation’s finances, he’d let them.

…. a large number of patriotic Americans, mostly from states won by Mitt Romney last week, have petitioned the White House to let them secede. They should be careful about what they wish for…..

Red states receive, on average, far more from the federal government in expenditures than they pay in taxes. The balance is the opposite in blue states. The secession petitions, therefore, give the opportunity to create what would be, in a fiscal sense, a far more perfect union.

…. would-be rebels from the red states should keep in mind during the coming budget battle that those who are most ardent about cutting government spending tend to come from parts of the country that most rely on it.

The states that signed petitions to secede aren’t just the usual Southern states which is very surprising. There are 30 states that want to secede including New York, Michigan, New Jersey, Arizona, Missouri, North Carolina etc. It’s hilariously pathetic.

          November 14, 2012 at 9:40 am

that’s because any one nutjob in any state can start a petition—–does not reflect any sizable chunk of the populations in those states, obviously.

Just as it doesn’t represent any “sizable chunk of the populations” in the Southern states either. The point was that any nut job can start a petition and when 30 states have petitions, people should stop casting stones at one region of the United States.

Should Arizona create a state-run health exchange where consumers could choose health plans, or let the federal government create and run one for Arizonans?

LYIN RYAN PRETENDS THERE IS NO MANDATE AS A JUSTIFICATION FOR OBSTRUCTION

Paul Ryan makes the case against a mandate

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————

Ryan’s argument, in other words, is pretty hard to take seriously. The re-elected president lacks a “mandate” because he only won a majority of the popular vote, a large majority of the electoral vote, and most voters supported Democratic congressional candidates? Presidential mandates are now dependent on gerrymandered House district lines? C’mon.

But let’s not miss for the forest for the trees.

Ryan is making the case against a presidential mandate as a justification for obstructionism. His argument, in effect is, “The president may appear to have earned a mandate, but Republicans are inclined to pretend otherwise.”

This isn’t an attitude that will lead to progress over the next two years.

Great article on gerrymandering and how even though Dems lead the popular votes in the House they didn’t win the majority. More people voted for Ds but the Rs still hold power because they drew lines. The reality is the Ds have the mandate of the public in the House, Senate and of course Oval Office. Gotta put that power into action.

    • November 14, 2012 at 9:49 am

It really makes me sick that 2010 was such a debacle. We should have been more aware that the election year would be confounded by the census and would change the dynamics of districting. We’ll be paying for this for years. That’s why I detest the likes of Ed and Michael Moore and all the other disgusting idiots who goaded people into staying home. GRRRRRRR.

That is where, process-wise, the rethugs do much better than the Dems. They have their folks wired to turnout in census years — it’s all about control! When my folks complain about the way we were redistricted (our district PA-07 is ranked as the most gerrymandered CD in the USA!) — my response is “Come out and vote in every election, now – 2020”

I disagree with Dana Milbank that the ‘Union of the Makers’ would be fiscally healthy off but ‘spiritually poor’ without the ‘Confederacy of the Takers’, if their absurd petitions to secede are successful: what we are talking about here is CONSCIOUSNESS, not religion, and religion does not necessarily make one more compassionate, or empathetic. There are plenty of spiritually evolved, conscious people living in the Union of the Makers, which is exactly WHY we voted to re-elect PBO! Hello? Dana? This is why we tend to stay away from Opinion writers, yes? Oh, time to get ready for work: there is an economy to support! That would be the part I play, willingly!

    • 52 carolyn
      November 14, 2012 at 9:25 am

We also need to remember that it is not the states that are petitioning…..it’s crazy individuals within the states. Both the Texas governor and the Oklahoma governor have made statements that this is not going to happen. I believe this is the last loud bellow of the Tea Partiers. They obviously do not know what democracy is.
If Oklahoma were to secede….there would go our biggest employer…..Tinker Air Force Base, and also Fort Sill and Vance Air Force Base. There would go grants to the Medical Research at OU, our lakes and dams which are the only things keeping us from another Dust Bowl.
I read one article this morning that said if California seceded, it would become almost completely solvent (it wouldn’t have to support the red states) and Alabama wouldn’t be able to pay for its stop signs. The states with petitions to secede are for the most part Romney’s “takers”. They are subsidized by New York, California, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, etc.
But these are not STATES asking for this: these are Neanderthal cretins doing the petitioning.

I want to see Susan Rice nominated to replace Hillary Clinton. The fake outrage about Benghazi from the Republican Party (I’m looking at you Lindsey Graham, Bob Corker and John McCain) is disgusting and nothing but pure partisan politics. President Obama should nominate the person he wants as Secretary of State. If the angry white men in the Republican Party want to have hearings where they are disrespecting and trying to smear Susan Rice all I can say is BRING IT ON. Susan Rice is tough as nail and she can fend for herself. But the specter of the GOP trying to smear Susan Rice is not going to sit well with the voters who gave President Obama a second term.

All of the manufactured GOP scandals (Solyndra, Fast and Furious, Benghazi) have been soundly debunked. When is the media going to focus on THEM? They just can’t be taken seriously when at every turn all they are trying to do is create sandals where they don’t exist. The media should be questioning why they are not spending their energies on legislation to improve the lives of the American people.

The attacks on Susan Rice are ridiculous. She obviously reported what the CIA had told her. I have one problem though: I can’t help being a bit suspicious about the CIA reports. Are THEY telling the truth ? Have they been completely loyal to the POTUS ? What is the CIA doing in Lybia and are those actions all APPROVED by President Obama ? Or did Petraeus had his own ideas and didn’t tell everything to President Obama ?

Reading all about Petraeus, General Allen, the Tampa woman who was an unofficial “liaison” with Middle-East people, Broadwell having military documents in her possession, etc…. All those REPUBLICANS in positions of influence…. you can’t help wondering if they are loyal to the POTUS, or , on the contrary, working behind the scenes on their own agendas.

Pardon my indulgence again—but didn’t know this tidbit from the WP——that the original emails that triggered the Petraeus downfall came from Gen. Allen, which were forwarded to Kelley:
“…Allen forwarded to Kelley anonymous emails he received from someone using the handle “kelleypatrol”. The messages warned Allen to stay away from Kelley, calling her a “seductress” and suggested that Petraeus was having an intimate relationship with her…”
Kelley turned these over to shirtless FBI guy and then additional similar emails she received. Broadwell sent her warnings from internet cafes and from hotels in locations from her book tour.

I realize that the unions and moveon played a role in getting PBO elected, but they need to chill and not crowd him so much. I appreciate that they have his back as well as all of us, but I trust PBO will do what he says. That is why I voted for him.

great reply!! gee, reich, you mean exactly as president obama has been saying for years, even long before he ever became president?!? that’s subconscious racism, pure and simple, where he feels the need to lecture “the boy” at every turn. maybe someone can send him this, where president obama makes that exact case much more clearly and forcefully than robert reich ever has.

oh, and president obama, by winning elections and passing legislation, has done more to move america in that direction, and end trickle down economics, more than the entire professional left combined has ever done!

Reich is part of the crew that gave us NAFTA, which accelerated the decline of home-grown manufacturing. This President is the one that saved the auto industry and is slowly but surely modernizing and bringing manufacturing back.

Reich is part of the crew that gave us the end of Glass-Stegall, which allowed banks to gamble with their depositors’ money and in turn, led to a global economic collapse. This President brought championed the greatest reforms on the financial services industry since the 1930s, so that doesn’t happen again.

Reich needs to remember the entire record of the administration in which he served time he tries to posture as the most leftist progressive in the history of the world.

I am no defender of Reich — he’s an emoprog extraordinaire and he’s been snippy all along about PBO and has done great damage, being one of the loudmouths that led to the 2010 debacle. .

But I believe he was long gone when Glass-Steagall was repealed and I believe he was against NAFTA (but I may be wrong about that).

He was too progressive for Clinton’s right-of-center policies and was never a comfortable fit.

    This is for you, amk,

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a
bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird’s
mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.
John tried and tried to change the bird’s attitude by consistently saying
only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think
of to “clean up” the bird’s vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled
back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder.

John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him
in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and
screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a
minute. Fearing that he’d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the
    freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John’s outstretched arms and said “I
believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.
I’m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I
fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable
    behavior.”

John was stunned at the change in the bird’s attitude. As he was about
to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his
behavior, the bird continued, “May I ask what the turkey did?”

    By Dan Friedman // November 14, 2012 | 10:27 a.m.
    Updated: November 14, 2012 | 10:29 a.m.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was elected Senate Minority Whip by acclamation and Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kans., became National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman as both parties returned their Senate leadership team, aides tracking caucus meetings Wednesday morning said.

Cornyn, the outgoing NRSC Chairman, replaces retiring Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., in the number two Republican spot.
Sen. Mitch McConnnell, R-Ky., was reelected Republican Leader by affirmation, the fourth time he has won the job without opposition. McConnell was nominated in speeches by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla. The GOP elected Cornyn and returned their leadership despite suffering a disappointing loss of two seats last week, and for the second time failing to deliver on hopes to win back the Senate Majority.

Democrats are returning their leadership team intact. Democrats need to find a new Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair in coming weeks. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has approached Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., about the job and Bennet is considering it, senior Democratic staffers asid. Democratic leaders are also feeling out other members. Aides cited Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., talked of as a possibility, is not interested, the aides said.

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (WSVN) — Nearly a thousand ballots that were not included in Florida’s final count have been found in a warehouse in Broward County.

Tuesday morning and into the night, there was a buzz of activity at the Voting Equipment Center in Lauderhill, a week after the general election. There was a recount going on for two commission seats that were too close to call, one in Hallandale Beach and another in Dania Beach. Workers had to count those votes manually.

Also keeping elections officials busy is the fact that 963 filled ballots were found in a warehouse. The supervisor of elections, Dr. Brenda Snipes, said this happens all the time, especially when dealing with paper ballots. Her department is not the only one to have seen more ballots added to the final number after the election, and they have until Nov. 18 to certify all the votes.

Snipes noted that it is a routine thing to look for these kind of mishaps after election night and she is just glad that they are now being tallied into that final count.

[Who’s Gov. Patrick’s deputy? This lineup doesn’t do it for me]:

Potential candidates in Massachusetts “are quietly scrambling to position themselves to run for Sen. John Kerry’s seat if President Obama appoints Kerry to be his next secretary of state, or secretary of defense,” the Boston Globe reports.

“A Senate vacancy would probably create a comeback scenario for Senator Scott Brown, the Republican who lost the seat to Democrat Elizabeth Warren in last week’s election. He has sent clear signals in his concession speech and in recent interviews that he has an eye on another run.”

“Among the high-profile Democratic officeholders who are expressing interest are three of the state’s congressmen: Edward J. Markey of Malden, the 66-year old dean of the congressional delegation; Michael E. Capuano of Somerville, who ran second to Martha Coakley in the 2009 Senate primary; and Stephen F. Lynch of South Boston, a conservative Democrat who won his seat in a 2001 special election in which several liberals divided the vote on the left.”
