‘There was a rustling under the blanket…..”

Time: Pete Souza – “This was one of the most poignant moments of the President’s first term. He was visiting wounded warriors in the intensive care unit ICU at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, May 1, 2012. He had just presented a Purple Heart to Sgt. Chase Haag, who had been injured by an IED just hours before. Sgt. Haag was covered with a blanket and it was difficult to see how badly he was injured. He was also seemingly unconscious so the President whispered in his ear so not to wake him. Just then, there was a rustling under the blanket and Sgt. Haag, eyes still closed, reached his hand out to shake hands with the President.”

Thank you kindly, desertflower. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you how much I love your beautiful and inspiring screen name. By the way, we are counting on you guys to turn AZ blue on Nov. 6th. The recent polls have been very exciting. I especially want to see Dr. Carmona take theSenate seat now occupied by that vile man, Jon Kyl. I have this feeling that on Nov. 6th, AZ will be glowing, like a “desert flower.”

Why, nathkatun….I do believe you’re flirting with me:) Kidding! Thank you for the compliment…I have no idea how I chose that name, been so long now…but it seems to suit me. Nothing would make so many of us here in AZ happier than to have PBO win AZ…and also to have Dr. Carmona become our senator. Like I said yesterday, I might never wipe the smile from my face if we can pull that off. We’re all working hard!

Thanks Chipsticks –such a great picture. And it was a good story aside from the typo in the picture caption that, at best, was distracting and at worst is an unfortunate mistake given they are writing about the president and a wounded soldier. In the second sentence it s/b visiting not visited. I mean, TIME doesn’t have enough editors to catch these things? That’s their whole business – words on paper…

And they have two brilliant spouses who support them.

        October 14, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Jovie it is not a wash. Mitt Romney owns 51% in shares. The average state retirement plans gives you what???? Even if you have .0002% in stock you are still a share holder. Can you make any decisions? Hell no. But you still own some stock. So there is no equivalency between the two. Bain and Mr. 51% makes the decisions on whether or not to sell off the company and ship those jobs overseas. and #Sensata is just one of many for Romney.

        • October 14, 2012 at 10:25 pm

I know that, but for the media to push it… Well, I think you get my drift?
The Media is having problems pushing anything bad for Robney, giving Him a pass, it would have to be pretty bad.

actually it is moving. Especially on the local level. Folks accessed WIW’s website and utilized her media page on the state and local level. When you google Sensata you get a lot of articles popping up all the time. So our voices are being heard.

      • 103 nathkatun7
        October 14, 2012 at 10:42 pm

No Jovie, It’s not a wash. Individuals have absolutely no say in these Retirement Plan investments. I remember my retirement plan here in California had invested in Enron, but I had absolutely had no idea or say so in those investment decisions. The only time I learned about this was when Enron was exposed. The same is not true of a former Owner of the company that is now outsourcing jobs. Please let’s stop letting them off the hook with these false equivalencies!

The Pope met with the College of Cardinals to discuss a proposal from Shimon Peres, the former leader of Israel.

“Your holiness,” said one of the Cardinals, “Mr. Peres wants to determine whether Jews or Catholics are superior, by challenging you to a golf match.”

The Pope was greatly disturbed, as he had never held a golf club in his life.

“Not to worry,” said the Cardinal, “We’ll call America and talk to Jack Nicklaus. We’ll make him a Cardinal, he can play Shimon Peres … We can’t lose!”

Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made and, of course, Jack was honored and agreed to play.

The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of his success in the match. “I came in second, your Holiness,” said Nicklaus.

“Second?!” exclaimed the surprised Pope. “You came in second to Shimon Peres?!”

“No,” said Nicklaus, “second to Rabbi Woods.”

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – President Obama is making no more jokes about how much he dislikes debate prep.

Asked by a reporter during a pop-in at a Williamsburg campaign office how his studying is going, the president responded with a quick: “It is going great!”

The difference is palpable compared to what he told supporters outside Las Vegas while studying for his calamitous Denver debate.

“Basically they’re keeping me indoors all the time,” Obama said then. “It’s a drag. They’re making me do my homework.”

If Obama is interested in playing hooky from his debate practice — where aide Anita Dunn is playing the role of Candy Crowley and Sen. John Kerry is reprising his role as Mitt Romney — he doesn’t have to go far. The president’s hotel here, the posh Kingsmill Resort, is also hosting a Ferrari car show Sunday.

The day’s message from Team Obama continues the campaign’s vow of contrition from the first debate and vows to do better Tuesday night at Hofstra University on Long Island.

“The president is his own harshest critic and he knows Mitt Romney had a better night at the first debate,” campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. “The American people should expect to see a much more energized President Obama making a passionate case for why he is a better choice for the middle class.”

    • 136 hopefruit2
      October 14, 2012 at 10:43 pm

The media is obsessed with this President. I haven’t seen a single media report about Willard’s debate prep. No tweets from Mark Knoller who wanted Axelrod to say exactly what PBO was going to do in the debate, etc. None of yer damn business, Mark!

        October 14, 2012 at 11:40 pm

When I first read that joke “they’re making me do my homework” I thought it was just a misdirection, that he was playing them, head faking and then BAM! he would get that sucka. But I guess he wasn’t. With so much hate to defeat and so many Obama supporters giving both of time and money, he gave some (Andrew and others) the fits if only because Romney’s supporters stopped being demoralized. Maybe the Prez is better under pressure cuz now there’s pressure on Tuesday. I’m gonna pray, and I ain’t even the praying kind.

        • 138 Lovepolitics2008
          October 15, 2012 at 12:12 am

The expectations for President Obama are getting insanely high, I’m afraid. I have no doubt that President Obama will be energized and will make a strong case for his policies, and will try to score some points against Romney on taxes, Medicare, women’s rights. However, we can expect that Romney will be well prepared too. President Obama can “win” the debate, but it’s possible that it will be a slight win, or it’s also possible that the debate will be declared “a tie”. Look at what they did with the VP debate.

It will be very important for supporters this time to work hard at winning the post-debate, and FIGHT HARD against the media who will try to establish the narrative that President Obama “didn’t do enough”.

          • 139 nathkatun7
            October 15, 2012 at 4:03 am

“The expectations for President Obama are getting insanely high, I’m afraid.”

Who are these expectants? I hope it doesn’t include all of us who support the President and know exactly who he is and what he has been able to accomplish in the face of vicious and hostile opposition. Speaking for my self, I really could care less about the corporate media pundits’ evaluation of the debates. I don’t care how well Mitt comes across. I don’t care who Chris Matthews, Ed Shultz, Brian Williams, and the rest of the media, declare to be the winner. I am sure, like all con artists, Romney has his game perfected. Like a glib-talking, used car salesman, he will probably sell the American people, and the idiot pundits, a lemon. All I will say, before and after the debate, is shame on all the people who will buy into Romney’s lies and con games. For me, I am voting for a President and not for a first talking, glib, used car salesman liar. I just can’t imagine that anything would happen on Tuesday that would lead me to stop supporting President Obama enthusiastically. That’s why I am not going to buy into the media hype about this or the next debate. Clearly, the media are in Romney’s/Ryan’s corner. Nothing will happen on Tuesday, unless Romney wets his pants, that will change the media hostility towards President Obama. Otherwise, they (the bulk of the media) would not have reacted the way they did to the Biden/Ryan debate. I pray, and hope, that some of the pants-on-fire freak outs, that took place on this beautiful site last week, won’t happen again on Tuesday.

Again, for me: Rain or Shine, I am with President Obama 100% I refuse to be part of the superficial media games about who won and lost the debates, so long as there are no trained, objective, judges scoring the debate. My refusal to enable the false media narrative, about the winners and losers of the debate, and my steadfast support of the President, are the only way I know of that will help President Obama win re-election.

nathkatun7, this is a most excellent comment, and one that should be front-paged as a reminder that we’re not about to be dictated by the media or anyone else what our expectations should be or how we react to our President’s performance in those debates. We KNOW the pathological character that Romney is, and we KNOW our President. Our support for him is not fleeting -it’s rock solid, and our minds are not changed by a scripted, one-sided 90 minute “debate” or by the theatrics of narcissistic and overpaid cable TV pundiots or Internet bloggers.

Thanks again nathakatun7 for your great contribution to this wonderful blog.

This link contains everything anyone needs to know and provides a strong starting point if they want to share what is happening with #Sensata
    http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021531540

and for Jovie or anyone else who had questions regarding Fox’ latest spin on PO’s position on having shares . . .

This merely means that the state of Illinois has a partly-private retirement plan for its elected officials. As part of its shared investments for all of the employees eligible under the state retirement system holds shares of Sensata. This has nothing specific to do with President Obama, other than that he once held a job which contributed to the state retirement system.

First, the Medicare ad, then mentioning the birth certificate, then Sunnunu out there saying the President is lazy etc.
Well, I just looked at the internals at PPP NC poll, and Florida poll.
Well, the President is bleeding support from White People, independents frankly.
This is gross! People need to wake up and stop being Willie Hortoned!

Jovie I hear you but at this juncture who cares? They know what this election is all about and if they waffle, let them. For every one of them that can’t bring themselves to vote for PO but will vote for Romney against their best interest, 10 more will cast their vote for the President. So I wouldn’t worry about it. You do what you can, educate as much as you can and keep it moving.

I just got back from NC and I am from a GOP county in NC. On my way from Greenville SC to Moore County NC, I literally saw 1 Romney/Ryan yard sign. I saw many Obama/Biden signs and bumper stickers. I went to Apex NC to visit some family and the neighborhood I was in had not one Romney/Ryan sign, but did have Obama/Biden. Now I am not saying this means the President will undoubtedly win NC, but I know for a fact that the Republicans are way less enthusiastic about Romney/Ryan than they were for McCain/Palin. I spoke with my family in NC and they are fired up and ready to early vote. People are awake in my opinion, and the polls are not capturing what is really going on on the ground IMHO.

A vacuum salesman appeared at the door of an old lady’s cottage and, without allowing the woman to speak, rushed into the living room and threw a large bag of dirt all over her clean carpet. He said, “If this new vacuum doesn’t pick up every bit of dirt then I’ll eat all the dirt.”

The woman, who by this time was losing her patience, said, “Sir, if I had enough money to buy that thing, I would have paid my electricity bill before they cut it off. Now, what would you prefer, a spoon or a knife and fork?”

I think that If Mrs Crowley plays a bigger role, it is good for President Obama. He’s much more consistent on policy, and hasn’t anything to hide. Moreover, he has a VP who is totally aligned with him in terms of policy. As for Romney, I hope Mrs. Crowley points out some of his inconsistencies, and the differences between him and Ryan. One can dream.

Totally cosign you desire, AMK! This Ayn Rand devotee, masquerading as an Economics intellect, needs to be thoroughly defeated. Although I am strictly a red wine drinker, I may, on Nov. 6th, consider indulging in a few shots of gin, or vodka, or rum, or whisky, if the results show that Paul Ryan has lost both the VP and his Congressional seat. Now if both Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor lose their seats in Congress, there is no guarantee I will be in a position to go work on Nov. 7th, because there is no telling how much of the good stuff I would have consumed in celebration. By the way, the same is true if my neighbors in AZ turn the state blue by voting for President Obama and for Dr. Rich Carmona for the U.S. Senate.

Well Family, I just finished crying for almost two hours straight watching the First Graduating Class of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. So heartwarming, such a triumph! If you get the opportunity to see it, please do. It will fill you up with such pride for the these amazing young women. They will be the future leaders of South Africa and the world.

I remember watching the opening of the Leadership Academy, and really having so much hope for those young ladies. So glad to hear they have graduated the first class – especially after the horrible scandals with the headmaster there. I hope they go on to do great things for their communities.

Although I usually agree with dissing Halperin, his piece is worth reading. Crowley has stated publicly that her view of her role as moderator is far broader than either campaign agreed to and both campaigns have expressed concerns to the Commision. This could be an utter fiasco!

    • October 14, 2012 at 11:55 pm

And what’s interesting is that both campaigns want her reined in. Ms. Candy has an inflated sense of herself. Maybe she saw Martha’s performance and wants to replicate it. The problem is that Ms. Raddatz was good, while Crowley has never shown the type of temperament to pull it off.

      • 187 FoxfireTX
        October 15, 2012 at 12:19 am

What concerns me is it doesn’t sound like there is any agreement between her and Commission to hold her feet to the fire. And she is an utter GOP flak. I’ve always had the sense she truly hates Obama and would love nothing more than to try to humiliate him. I truly cannot believe these debates have become such a nightmare. This was the LAST thing I was worried about when thinking about the campaign earlier in the year. And I believe that Romney will do just fine in all three debates. His entire professional life has been peddling lies to anyone who would listen. He is the slick used care salesman.

        • 188 Lovepolitics2008
          October 15, 2012 at 1:24 am

I think Mrs. Crowley is nervous and knows that her reputation is on the line. She will be afraid to appear biased. She may surprise us.

I agree with you about Romney though. I’m sure he has worked very hard on foreign policy. He doesn’t have the depth of thinking of the President nor his knowledge of history but those debates are somewhat pretty superficial and boy he can sell his stuff. I remain confident though that President Obama will be able to score a few points against him. Wanna bet that the Obama team has worked on a strategy for confronting Romney’s dangerous positions and not letting him run from them ? Moreover, President Obama will surely point out that Romney’s foreign policy team is packed with neo-cons.

I’m back home after two days in Iowa canvassing for the Obama campaign. I just wanted to stop in to say that we had some really positive responses of many people who have already voted for the President and others who are excited to do so. This is unfortunately the last weekend that I can get away but I plan to make phone calls across the country over the next three weeks. I’ve stayed away from cable news and social media for pretty much the past three weeks. I have to say that it does wonders for one’s attitude and provides great perspective. The thing that struck me about the team that I spent the weekend with was their optimism and good cheer. It was infectious. I am looking forward to hopefully celebrating again in Grant Park on the evening of November 6th. I can’t wait. Good night to all!

Good Morning All….up early with a burning question….how does caller id play in the polls….I never answer the phone unless I recognize #…except the one time I was polled and that was b/c I was expecting a call and just reached and did not look…….everyone I know does the same thing…so how do they know who is voting if so much of the electorate doesn’t answer the phone?….it seems to me that the only people who answer a phone is…1..a fluke, like me….2..refuse to have caller id, age, expense…or…3…someone who is so lonely they are sitting by the phone just waiting for political calls…..doesn’t make sense to me how they would get a picture of the electorate……early morning musing…

I understand that and I’m not concerned about CC, or PBO….what I don’t understand is how you get a true picture of the electorate…I personally think that there are a LOT of elderly concerned about medicare, ss who would tell anyone that they were going to vote PBO if their life depended on it….I think there are a lot of people who only have cell phones, and not just young people…and I think there are an enormous amount of people who just don’t answer the phone…so if you only poll old people what kind of #’s do you get?

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner smashed a number of records with his “edge of space” stunt – including for live streaming.

More than eight million people flocked to their devices to watch the 43-year-old break the speed of sound live on Google’s YouTube site.

It is the largest number of concurrent live streams in the website’s history, Google UK confirmed to the BBC.

Mr Baumgartner also broke the record for the highest freefall.

He jumped from a capsule taken to 128,100ft (24 miles; 39km) above New Mexico in the US by a giant helium balloon.

It took nine minutes for him to reach the ground.

Footage from a camera on Baumgartner’s chest shows out-of-control spin

The adventurer plummeted at an estimated 833.9mph (1,343km/h), hitting Mach 1.24.
