Did Paul Ryan โ€œborrowโ€ story about his daughter from Kurt Cobain?

Hereโ€™s Paul Ryan during last nightโ€™s debate on how he became pro-life, and how his daughter got the nickname โ€œBeanโ€:

You know, I think about 10 1/2 years ago, my wife Janna and I went to Mercy Hospital in Janesville where I was born, for our seven week ultrasound for our firstborn child, and we saw that heartbeat. A little baby was in the shape of a bean. And to this day, we have nicknamed our firstborn child Liza, โ€œBean.โ€ Now I believe that life begins at conception.

And hereโ€™s Kurt Cobainโ€™s and Courtney Loveโ€™s daughter Frances Bean Cobain on how she got the name โ€œBeanโ€ twenty years ago:

Frances Bean Cobain was born at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and was immediately anointed the worldโ€™s newest rock princess. Her parents were two of the biggest rock stars on the planet and her godfather is R.E.M frontman Michael Stipe. Kurt Cobain named his daughter after Frances McKee, the guitarist for The Vaselines, and gave her the middle named Bean because he thought she resembled a kidney bean on the ultrasound. Unfortunately, Frances never really got to know her father; he shot himself to death when she was just 20 months old.

Ryan is reportedly a Nirvana fan, the band that Kurt Cobain started and starred in. Weโ€™re to believe this is just a coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe Paul Ryan plagiarized the story about his daughter?

I just to don’t understand why politicians feel the need to bring personal stories and religion into an abortion debate. Everybody is different. Your views don’t matter to a woman with 3 kids and an abusive husband and no job. When it comes to certain issues people need to mind their own business.

DF I saw this story shortly after the debate and I was transported back to remembering ~ /wavy lines in front of a4alice’s face as she steps into the Waaaayyy Back Machine/ ~ a story about this very thing about Kurt Cobain and his daughter Frances and the origin of the “Bean” name.

I’m inclined to believe that Ryan is of course…..Lyin’.

yes, df, that sounds like exactly the kind of lying cheating smarmy bull shit that ryan produces all the time. i’m beginning to think robmey chose his running mate based, not on his alleged wonkiness, but on his wilingness and facility with lying.

ha. i just left a comment in the previous thread about how i feel nate silver’s model is just a computerized wind sock. i don’t mean to single out silver, since all the media/polling complex does the same game, but apparently deaniac and i were on the same wavelength, and he did mean to single out silver. ouch!

    • 23 hopefruit2
      October 13, 2012 at 11:56 am

4morefor44, I too agree that Silver’s model is a computerized wind sock. Garbage in = Garbage out. He’s basing his models on polling data being released, and refusing to acknowledge that many of them just aren’t valid. His models may have worked fine in 2010 but there are certain unique factors in the 2012 presidential election that make the traditional polling algorithms outdated or at best, inappropriate for this election year.

I have no problems singling out Silver, because I believe that too many Democrats (including Obama supporters) hang on to his every word and prediction like their life depended on it. Since moving to the NY Times, Silver has been pursuing the agenda of his corporate masters in order to hold on to his job. I understand the position that he’s in – but it also serves as an important reminder that the reputation he built in 2008 as an objective polling aggregator/statistician is no longer valid because the conditions under which he operates have changed substantially.

i just searched for an article i remember from al giordano predicting what would happen with nate silver’s move to the new york times, and this video came up too where silver and giordano spoke together in 2008:

wow, al has a bunch a great videos too that are just as relevant today. see them here

Koch Employee Says Billionaire Kidnapped & Interrogated Him
(CN) – Billionaire William Koch imprisoned and interrogated one of his executives at a secluded Aspen ranch, under a sheriff’s guard, because the executive suspected Koch’s companies of tax evasion, the employee claims in Federal Court.
Kirby Martensen, of Berkeley, Calif., says he was an executive for several companies owned and controlled by William Koch, including Oxbow Carbon & Minerals Inc. (OCM) and Oxbow Carbon & Minerals International (OCM International), until March, when he says he was suddenly fired.

Oxbow Carbon is the largest distributor of petroleum coke in the world, with annual shipments of nearly 11 million metric tons to U.S., Asian, European, Latin American and Pacific Rim markets, according to the company’s website.

Martensen says OCM International promoted him to senior vice president, Asia, in 2011, and he relocated to the company’s Singapore office with promises that his family’s expenses and his children’s education would be covered.

“Martensen understood that the goal of this assignment was to help legitimize OCM’s Bahamian shell company,” according to the complaint in the Northern District of California. “This included, but was not limited to, discussions and negotiations concerning the sourcing of pet-coke and sales to Asian customers. Plaintiff was informed that the move to Asia was for tax purposes. More than 75 percent of Oxbow’s fuel-grade petroleum coke export profits were derived from its Asian trading business. Plaintiff has information and believes this relocation was part of a plan being implemented to evade paying taxes to the United States on profits in excess of $200,000,000 per year.

My son’s girlfriend isn’t political at all. because of his age, t his will be his first time voting too. I talked his girlfriend into registering to vote. She watched the debates and has read up on where both candidates stand on the issues.

I told her when it comes to reproductive rights. Ryan and Romney will be able to appoint at least one or two Justices to the Supreme Court.
They will pick someone who leans to the right. If the GOP takes over the Senate the Democrats won’t be able to stop the GOP from confirming Romney’s pick.

I think like a lot of young women, she never thought that an election could have such a personal impact on her life.
I really hope the Obama campaign will put out ads reminding folks about Romney/ Ryan’s stance on choice and what would happen if the balance of the court shifts.

Hi TrumpDog, try to relax, ok. Yes, we understand this because we care about POB’s abilities to bring calmness to the table each time, and he does. But remember like hF2 and theo67 stated,”He has this.” His word is his word.

Remember to bring your goodness of energy to the table with him on Tues., night, because he thrives on the goodness of people and their energies that come into his space. So try to relax, enjoy the great energy that Chips and all beautiful TODers are putting out, and we will make this happen for a victory for all of us.

I am in bed today with the most awful hellish pain because I pushed myself this pass week with my commitments for our president, but I know that the journey will be worth it, and the fight will end in a great way. I believe that deep within my heart. But a great journey is never easy or simple.

We will all have to do what we need to do to come in from the valley of our points of views and remember that when we come up, we will see a light that will shine for truth, peace, fairness, honesty, humble spirits, and a man who believes with all of his might in the ability of the American people who really want a decent country. We have a decent and good man to fight all the way, so let us be brave and be ready to stand with him on Tues., night.

POB’s precious grandmother died three days before he made history in 2008, yet immediately after she passed, he gave a campaign speech of his life to all of us from VA. Remember that? She carried him to that space that night, and look at all of the people who were there listening to him. Those were spirits of goodness surrounding him. That is the space we must rise to be in for him.

I do not know when my gut will let up on me, but I do know that I have always fought the pain out with an energy that almost drains my very being, because I will not allow it to just put me down. I know deep within me there is still space for a healing, even if it is for a small time, but that time always come almost when I least expect it. Call your strength into your space beginning today and meet us all there on Tues., night. ((((((((((((((((( I love you all so very much))))))))))))))))))HZ

I’m asking, because I don’t know what’s playing in OH, FL, VA, NV, CO. I click on the ads I see posted here and I haven’t seen ads that are pushing PBO’s record. Now is the time, damn it.

For once, I agree with Fineman. People need to know they can have confidence in President Obama. Frustrating that so many are difficult to convince because for us it’s so evident.

America is on the right track and President Obama has to make the case. If he does not, Romney occupies the space and presents himself as the candidate of hope. And even if people know he’s not as good a man as Barack Obama is, they could very well choose him. Go on tv, Mr. President. Occupy the stage! Make a statement on jobs, anything !!!

I wonder… Maybe the Obama campaign relies too much on their micro polling on issues and strategy. And I have a feeling they overanalyze things and have become too careful. And anyway , polls lie, because people lie to themselves.

Go with your heart and your gut, Obama team ! Don’t miss the forest for the trees !

I agree. what Joe Biden showed on Thursday is that the case must be made and it has to be done emphatically. I’m not seeing it and I’m frustrated. The reason Mitt could swoop in with the lies is twofold: the outrageous behavior of the alleged progressive media; and too many Americans not knowing what this President has accomplished. There should be plenty of money to blanket the air waves with his accomplishments. As I said upthread, if this is happening in the swing states, fine, but I certainly haven’t seen those ads if they exist.

Yes, do that!!! They read everything, and I know and I’ll tell you why. Last weekend I made a good sized donation (at least to me) on the Quick Donate page. A few hours later I received a thank you note for a second one, one which I did not remember making. Then, Saturday night when we got home from the symphony, I received another thank you note, and I hadn’t even been home. All Total, I was in for FOUR donations, one of which I had made. I was scared that my account had been hacked. SO, Sunday morning I wrote the donations line and explained my situation. Monday morning I got an email telling me that three of the donations would be credited back to my account. By Wednesday, they were. I have since donated again…..but, they are on it.
So, make your suggestions to them. I wrote them today suggesting they ask WHICH Romney will show up Tuesday night: The Moderate Mitt, or the Severely conservative Mitt, or one we haven’t met yet. After I wrote that letter, I read the NY Times editorial which echoed my letter!!! i KNOW the committee read NYTimes editorials, and they read emails.

omg. 3 weeks before one of the biggest elections of any of our lifetimes, and are so many of you going to start with the lack of confidence in president obama and his team….again?!? must we go through every single election?!? seriously?

the media is the problem. got it? the media, not team obama. i was at a presidnet obama event leading up to the 2010 midterms, and he was rip-roaring about how much he got done and got into detail about what was in aca and everything else. when my better half and i watched the coverage that night, it was as if the media was at a completely different event. every single time i’ve ever seen president obama talk, including the debate which he won yet THE MEDIA consciously created the loss theme that so many are still falling for, he’s very directly and strongly talking about their accomplishments. they made an excellent mini-documentary to kick of the campign doing just that. there have been tons of ads talking about accomplishments, including the latest one that’s upthread and narrated by morgan freeman. please, please, please stop falling into the same trap election after election…the trap the media sets designed to demoralize and get democrats critical of each other and arguing.

now is not the time for armchair campaign managing. we have very clear and simple things to be doing of the next 3 weeks, and hand-wringing and second-guessing leaders who have proven over and over to be some the best political campaigners of all time, is not on the list. direct your fire at the real problem-the media-and work out your nervousness by educating every single person in your immediate circles about how the media is a giant propoganda mill for the republican party, and/or knocking on doors and making calls. take off the bedroom slippers and put on the marching shoes one last time for president obama! 3 weeks left!! forward!!

        October 13, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Lovepolitics2008 if you agree with Fineman, then you really do not know Barack Obama as well as you think you do.

And quite frankly, and unfortunately, it’s individuals like you who help to reinforce negative media narratives and make this President’s job twice as difficult as it otherwise would be.

At this stage of the game, NO ONE who plans to vote in November should be asking President Obama to “make the case” for his record. He has done so numerous times and there is absolutely no excuse for anyone who claims that they don’t know what his record has been. At this stage of the game, NO ONE who plans to vote in November should claim that they do not know about Mitt Romney’s record as a governor in MA, his abuses at Bain, his offshore accounts, his failure to release his tax returns.

And I’m sorry, but I do call in question people’s honesty when they make such ludicrous statements about Obama not making his case clearly. It’s a load of horseshit, quite frankly.

Well said hopefruit2! I agree with you 100%! Fineman always finds something to attack the President on. Besides, is it not the job of the media to prominently report positive news about the economy the same way they do with negative news? It’s people like Fineman who are doing a great deal of damage to U.S. journalism.

Every rally President Obama has been touting his success. I have been hearing it, tweeting it, PBO and like-minded Dems have been touting it, BUT NOT HE MEDIA! They rarely cover his rallies, so they don’t hear it, but the people at those rallies do. I have also seen videos on the latest jobs numbers, the ones about the car industry, so I disagree profoundly with Howard Fineman. I tweeted him that he should stick his head out of Romney’s ass, then maybe he’d see PBO has been doing this.

      October 13, 2012 at 2:52 pm

real question: why won’t the news media make this a top story? why won’t they make the bain sellout to china a story? why won’t they make romney’s lies during the debate a story? why is it pbo’s job to run the country and also disseminate the news?

      • 98 Carolyn
        October 13, 2012 at 5:26 pm

Susanne, well put……the president makes the news, the so-called reporters are supposed to disseminate it.
A word about the campaign committee: Think about them. These are the people who brought President Obama from a not well known Illinois Senator in 2006….yes, he made a splash at the 2004 convention, but those things fade…..to President of the United States in 2008. He overcame a 70 point deficit to Hillary Clinton, to win the primaries. He overcame immense obstacles, and yes some very low polling during the election campaign, to win. These people operate at maximum efficiency, and are open to suggestions. They have made a few small blunders, but they have always recouped.
Once again…..wait for the OFA internal polling to start dribbling out the last week of the campaign. It will come in carefully calibrated bits, from specific states, at specific times. Remember TIMING is everything. Romney has peaked. I firmly believe this, and so do other analysts who know more than I do. Romney and Ryan will now get overconfident and lazy and sloppy. Just wait for the BIG mistakes on their parts.
Probably the best thing that happened was for the President to go easy in that first debate and for Democrats to panic. Remember all the admonitions about not getting overconfident before the debate????? Well, we were overconfident, and the committee knew it. We are NOT now. We will work the GOTV. College students in Ohio voted early so they could GOTV…….
Even in Oklahoma, the only political ads I’ve seen have been the good, positive, national ones for the President, not Romney.

Okay, Tally…..checked out that article. All I can say is GOOD LUCK!!!!
I remember clear back when the original Upstairs/Downstairs was on…….some network tried an “Americanized Love child” (love that) called Beacon Hill. Great stars, like Edward Hermann, great music by Marvin Hamlisch……tried to do in Boston what the BBC did for London. It was a bomb. It was mostly about young drunk heirs and Irish maids. No thriving story line, and all stock characters. Having lived in Boston, I could tell the writers had never visited.
However, the English have lived with their class system for so many centuries, it’s in their DNA, and they understand it…..we don’t.
Thanks for the warning Tally…….it will certainly be on my no-watch list:) Why can’t we be original? We are best when we are creative, like The West Wing. That wasn’t copied, and no other country has that.

Has anybody else thought like I have, that people are fed up with being polled? I have never seen such overpolling…..every day, every hour, new pollsters…..blah, blah, blah. I know I’m tired of reading about them.
I still say, there are only two polls that matter: The one on Nov. 6, and the OFA internal polling. They were the most accurate four years ago, and I am sure they are accurate now. When we see Plouffe and Axelrod panicking, that will be the time to panic. Until then, Keep calm and Carry on, and work and donate, and talk to friends, and push back on the stupid media……which I see the TOD doing a great job.

What about a jobs speech? Or a Tax speech? Nope, he can’t parse those…

    • 126 theo67
      October 13, 2012 at 2:05 pm

This should be interesting, since his party is the one that walked away from $4 trillion in deficit reduction, and he was one of the many Republican candidates who raised his hand saying he would refuse $10 trillion in cuts in exchange for $1 trillion in revenue increase. Plus, he’s got that noose around his neck from wanting to give $5 trillion in tax cuts to the very wealthy, and wanting to add another $2 trillion to the Defense budget, which the Chiefs of Staff aren’t even asking for. As for spending? His party is the one that put two wars, two tax increases and a prescription drug plan on the credit card. This should be very interesting indeed.

The deficit has gone DOWN under President Obama. Period.

Colleges Take a Leap Into Voter Registration
    Published: October 13, 2012

EVANSTON, Ill. โ€” Every four years, volunteers swarm university campuses, clipboards in hand, to register newly eligible voters for what is generally the only presidential election of their undergraduate careers. This year they found large numbers were already registered.

Exclusive: Romney Family Investment Group Partnered With Alleged Perpetrators Of $8 Billion Ponzi Scheme

      from the article:

‘ In an exclusive interview with ThinkProgress, Tagg Romney confirmed their business relationship, but falsely claimed that the men were cleared of any wrongdoing associated with the Ponzi scheme. Tagg Romney told ThinkProgress that his three partners collected about $15,000 from their involvement in the Ponzi scheme. Court documents obtained by ThinkProgress show that the legal proceedings are ongoing and the men made over $1.6 million selling fraudulent CDs to investors. ‘

what is wrong with america, that these people are seen as viable presidential material?

Just got back from another exhausting, but exhilarating day of canvassing. Lots of folks not home (or just not answering doors), but 99% of the ones who were home are ENTHUSIASTIC Obama supporters. I did have a couple of sad experiences today. Two houses on the list were empty — clearly foreclosures. And one confused soul who screamed “we’re not voting, we’re not voting — go away”. He refused to listen whe I tried to explain how his voice matters, no matter, who he votes for. I left early voting info on his porch anyway in case he changes his mind. Interestingly, it wasn’t HIS name on my contact sheet, it was the Mrs. Maybe it’s one of those households where she doesn’t feel comfortable expressing her opinion. I hope she gets out and votes in spite of his shortsightedness.

Early voting starts in Georgia on Monday! Limited number of locations at first, then expands to satellites on Oct 27th.

In advance of Romney’s budget and spending speech next Friday, I recommend that you watch President Obama’s budget speech where he tore apart Paul Ryan (and his little flawed budget) after seating him in the front row. It’s enlightening. Especially for those who say President Obama never put forward a reduction plan.

Remember: Romney wants $2 trillion more in defense spending. $5 trillion in tax cuts. To kill Medicare, Medicaid. To privatize Social Security (i.e. put it on the stock market and let it ride). To kill EPA, Education Dept, Energy Dept, National Foundation for the Arts and Big Bird. As President Obama says in the video – this is only 12% of the total budget. So, whatever he plans to say – be prepared to push back with the truth by watching this video.

On-the ground feed back about Ohio:

Earlier today, a few people here were concerned about what Team Obama is doing in Ohio.

The simple answer is : A lot.

O-Supporting commercials are repeatedly running on all every channel.

Almost every other day, there is one of the top surrogates of PBO or POTUS himself campaigning somewhere in Ohio.

Every one in the OH Dem State Party is focused on keeping Ohio Blue this november and those with higher name-recognition are voicing commercials with the less-known Dem candidates.

It is also true that the number of people who are voting early in Ohio is high. Reports indicate that the absentee ballots may also be high since the SOS sent out notices to ALL registered voters giving them the option to vote by mail. Reports are that one in five has already voted.

All efforts on the ground are focused on GOTV.

Unions are investing heavily here since they have felt the blunt of the gop governor who tried to take their rights away. They also are working hard to ensure that not only PBO wins but that Union-supporting liberal Senator Sherrod Brown is re-elected.

I believe that PBO’s decision to save the auto-industry is the best long-term investment Team Obama made in Ohio since one in every 8 jobs in OH is related to the auto-industry. People here openly proclaim that they owe their jobs directly to PBO’s policies and that they will have his back no matter what. I believe that that is the one reason that the multitudes of negative messages from rove’s superpac have failed to swing the election for mitt in OH

Don’t often link to Dkos story. This is a diary of a very realistic and cautious assessment of why PBO will win. He has a tremendous electoral advantage and despite the uptick in GOP enthusiasm, leading to distorted LV screens in polling. PBO can lose most of the battleground states and still win, still make 270. Have a look:

    • October 13, 2012 at 5:21 pm

Bill, these analyses are fine, but for me the ONLY objective is an Obama/Biden/Democratic Party win that will bust the 1936 record. That is how we begin to end the Civil War, avert an effort to transform the USA into its pre-1774 status and prevent perpetual war.

We must bury the John Birch Party of misogynistic, racist plutocrats once and for all.

      good article–thanks, bill.
i heard a bit of analysis on npr yesterday, linking the robmey post-debate uptick to americans’ enjoyment of reality show voting. and those votes are for style, flair, dramatics–not content. they vote for who ‘sells’ the song, not for the meaning or ‘truthiness’ of the lyrics. with that in mind, the debate win/loss scenario is irrelevant, as are the polls stemming from it. americans like a bit of theater with their politics, but that doesn’t mean we’re stupid. the polls showing dems are still winning the senate indicate that folks know what’s at stake and will vote a dem ticket–they just want a bit of fun along the way.

  68. October 13, 2012 at 5:15 pm

From now until Election day, we must be sure every American knows the story of Sensata, Global Tech Appliances and realizes that Romney not only has profited from female slave labor, he visited the Global Tech Appliances factory and regaled his Boca Raton fellow plutocrats – in May of this year – of his visit. The connections with that portion of the #47Percent video and Sensata and Global Tech can now be searingly made and it is for us to be sure we sear it into the minds and hearts of all our fellow citizens …

True. It is for US to DO. That’s always the way it is. Complacency is why the USA is at the very edge of an end to ALL that generations have given everything to create. By the time we are done with our own messaging through all of our personal networks, everyone will know.

My wife just watched the Sensata video – not once but twice, and not because I asked her to do so. She is LIVID and will let others know.

I know I’m biased because I grew up there, but I love people in Iowa. Phonebanking there——many amusing responses—-the last guy just said I didn’t need to worry about his vote, he HATES ROMNEY”S GUTS!!! And he’s making sure all his buddies are voting for Obama too—-all the guys from Hal’s or Mel’s (?) which I assume is a coffee mtg. spot or a diner—–or a bar? Great responses today from those at home—-2 people said they were undecided—–oy—-got in my pointers and hope I gave them something to think about—-but all the rest were enthusiastic Obama voters. One name I had was a gal presently serving in Afghanistan, talked to her dad, looking forward to her coming home safely in Jan., said she and 4 others in their house were all Obama voters. And had some interesting conversations because so many are current on all the political details. More early voters today too——so all good.

I’m not a facebook expert but my daughter just called and was horrified that Romney is showing up on her page as her “friend”, or something—–and she keeps getting messages ‘do you want to like Paul Ryan’ etc. She “hates Romney’s guts” too and can’t figure out how this happened—-she did nothing to make it happen—-she has Obama stuff on her page. She “unliked” him but doesn’t even want it to show up on her page at all. I saw others noting something about this on twitter. Wonder if someone pulled a fast one. My daughter said she was first made aware of this when her young daughter discovered it and started screeching, “MOM, you’re friends with Mitt Romney?????” sounding like she was accusing her of committing a horrible crime. Which it would be.

How Joe Biden Broke The Gish Gallop

    by LOLGOP

Paul Ryan didnโ€™t embarrass himself so much as he let the vice president embarrass him. With Bidenโ€™s help, Ryan came off as naรฏve on foreign policy, sketchy on economics and scary on womenโ€™s issues.

How did Biden succeed in neutralizing Paul Ryan when Ryan was making nearly the same case in nearly the same way Mitt Romney did last week? He broke the Gish Gallop.
Biden clearly made the decision that he was going to impede Ryanโ€™s ability to lie confidently. Ryan went at the vice president with distortions on every issue from Iran to abortion. And Biden refused to let any go. He used his facial reactions and interjections to contest the lies, demanded his equal time and tied it all together with his somewhat mocking, Senatorial use of โ€œmy friend.โ€ What was key to his strategy is that he actually spent little of his time rebutting facts. Instead he quickly bridged to his own arguments.
