We have TWO USED CAR SALESMEN running for the highest offices in the land. It is horrifying to think they got this close to the Oval Office. The American people deserve an honest and serious debate about the issues confronting this country. But all we get from the Romney-Ryan ticket is lies, distortions and tired right wing talking points and attacks. They are empty suits. They got nothin. There is no substance. There is no seriousness of purpose. Just empty rhetoric and reckless ambition run amuck. They will say and do anything to win. On top of that, they are running against an โ€œimaginary President Obamaโ€. They canโ€™t run against the real President Obama because his record of accomplishments just doesnโ€™t fit their narrative that he is a failure. So they make their own reality an show contempt for the voters and the media.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media is so obsessed with having a horse race that too many have abdicated their responsibility to educate and inform the public with the facts. Journalistic integrity has taken a beating this election cycle. Sure, there are fact checking organizations that have sprung up. BUT EVERY JOURNALIST SHOULD BE A FACT CHECKER. Is allowing politicians to lie with impunity going to become the norm? An accepted reality? The volume of Romney-Ryan lying is unprecedented. This can not stand. For the sake of the American people, the answer to that question has to be NO. I have a novel idea for journalists. Letโ€™s get back to the basics of journalism. Why not just tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may?

Romney & little Paul are allowed to be assertive and aggressive – but according to the GOP the POTUS and VP must act with the decorum of their position – funny that the GOP show NO respect for those positions – until it suits their negative purpose.

I think the story of her being a Rhodes Scholar is incorrect. She studied at Oxford for a semester while a student at Stanford, and people have exaggerated that into her being a Rhodes Scholar which is a post graduate program.

I have been listening to Progressive Radio this morning and ABC does the news for their station. I notice that on the hour they are playing the news like it was a draw with clips from both sides but on the half hour they have all clips by Romney-Ryan sounding like they won with no Obama Admin. clips. Also Romney said Biden lied about the Benghazi embassy attack according to him the WH knew ahead. That was promoted as if true by ABC. It reminds me of ’08s primary Dem debate debacle.

Don’t be bothered – they congratulated Romney because he was aggressive and reprimanded VP Biden for being the same. Ryan lost – many more people saw the debate than listen to the pundits. Ryan’s policies lost, Ryan’s budget lost. Lovely comment on Maddow blog via BJ about Ryan’s excessive drinking (water)

      My 91 year old mother noted how much water Ryan was drinking. {Mom is a WWII veteran Navy nurse.}

  18. 53 57andfemale

Wow, way to go, Charlie Pierce:

For years, Paul Ryan has been the shining champion of some really terrible ideas, and of a dystopian vision of the political commonwealth in which the poor starve and the elderly die ghastly, impoverished deaths, while all the essential elements of a permanent American oligarchy were put in place. This has garnered him loving notices from a lot of people who should have known better. The ideas he could explain were bad enough, but the profound ignorance he displayed on Thursday night on a number of important questions, including when and where the United States might wind up going to war next, and his blithe dismissal of any demand that he be specific about where he and his running mate are planning to take the country generally, was so positively terrifying that it calls into question Romney’s judgment for putting this unqualified greenhorn on the ticket at all. Joe Biden laughed at him? Of course, he did. The only other option was to hand him a participation ribbon and take him to Burger King for lunch.
You know what’s the difference between Sarah Palin and Paul Ryan?

And on several occasions Iโ€™ve heard V.P. Biden say that President Obama was the only one that decided to go ahead with the mission that killed Osama bin Laden after asking his cabinet’s opinion on the mission. We are truly in the midst of two great men. I would love to be a fly on the wall when both of these men debate an issue in private.

There is a big difference between the role of POTUS and VP – the weight of the world DOES rest on the President’s shoulders. The VP can explain, agree, advise and debate – but the final decision/reward/blame is the Presidents. They both excel at what they do, but the roles have very different levels of responsibility.

[Deaniac in Comments Section @ TPV]:

What was really great was you could see that Biden anticipated every single one of Ryan’s moves. It’s like he knew what Ryan was going to say before Ryan even said it. Ryan was reduced to … “what… but.. I.. uh… I mean…” This was like an expert chess player. Biden knew Ryan’s every move, and had an answer for each one of them. Ryan, on the other hand, looked bewildered and he was being attacked with facts!

Yep, I am getting the feeling that this is all part of a plan, too. The President couldn’t come out as too aggressive in the first debate – if he had, the pundits would be besides themselves that he was beating up on Romney while he was down, poor Romney. If he didn’t, they were going to declare the liar the winner. So Obama set the stage with substance and facts. Joe Biden picked it up and delivered the punches before Ryan knew what hit him. And next week, the President won’t be pulling any punches with Romney.

The foreign policy parts, it was almost painful to watch Ryan. “What will you do that’s different?” “Uh, we would’ve said some shit differently in the past.” “Ok but what about now?” “Uh, stop badgering me!”

    [From Keithnohio (same Comments section)]:

… We are at the finish line of this election cycle and the MSNBC pundits are showing their true colors and letting us know where their paychecks are coming from. I am talking about Rachel, Chris Matthews, and Ed Shultz. I know where Rev Al’s true alliances are, but he might be hamstrung as well. Martin Bashir is in our corner, but he might be silenced as well. GOTV people that is our only hope. We won’t get any help from the MSM or polls from now till the election. FOWARD!!

I’m sorry but the pathetic refrain from the Repubs that Biden was disrespectful is phenomenally stunning to me. No President has ever been treated with such disrespect; and a statesman, a decades-long Senator and Vice President of the United States should show ‘respect’ for Ryan’s lies and breathtaking lack of knowledge?

Ya gotta hand it to them, though: they are working as one, coordinated voice to keep Ryan’s ‘wonk’ cred (which by the way was blown out of the water by Biden), and to diminish Biden. They are fantastically shameless.

Anyway, J has this bit called “J Anthony Brown Murders The Hit”, in which he takes a popular song and changes the lyrics to reflect a newsworthy story in urban media and elsewhere.
This morning song, was based on Alicia Keyes new single “This Girl Is On Fire”. J Anthony Brown’s version, “Mitt Romney’s A Liar”. Give it a listen!

  38. October 12, 2012 at 1:03 pm

Josh Rogin reports at The Cable that President Obama and Vice President Biden were never personally made aware of requests for additional security at the Benghazi consulate and the Tripoli embassy in Libya:

The Cable asked Deputy National Security Advisor for Communications Ben Rhodes whether Biden was speaking for the entire Obama administration, including the State Department, which acknowledged receiving multiple requests for more Libya security in the months before the attacks. Rhodes said that Biden speaks only for himself and the president and neither of them knew about the requests at the time.

Biden was fact-checked by a number of organizations who took issue with his characterization in Wednesday debate that he had not heard requests from the Libyan missions for extra security.

“We weren’t told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security again,” Biden said in Wednesday’s encounter with Paul Ryan.

The truthfulness of that statements depends on what Biden meant when he said “we” โ€” State Department officials admitted in recent congressional hearings that requests were received from the Libyan missions for additional security resources in advance of the attack that killed four Americans.

I persist in saying that the fundamental problem in America is the press. Without an independent and vigilant press, the quality of the political discourse suffers, and the political institutions devolve. The authoritarian characters, the bullies, the fascists exist in every society. When the press isn’t able to play the role of informing people and shaming the liars and manipulators, then the equilibrium is broken, and it’s easier for the bad characters to win.

The US Media works for the facists. That is why the American people were sold into a foolish “war” I say an occupation of Iraq.

Speaking of the press I seem to remember they were showing video of mobs attacking many embassies including Benghazi all over tv and saying it was due to the internet insulting movie clip. They pushed the mob scenario as the reason before all the facts were in.

Bravo, Nena! Your comment is spot-on. I also remember, in the aftermath of 9/11 attacks, Dick Cheney specifically urging then Majority Leader Tom Daschel, not to investigate the failure by the Bush administration to heed the warnings about the impending attacks.

Okay, Richard Cohen went off the rails after 9/11 and has been a jackass ever since, but seriously — you have the utter gall to call Joe Biden a hack?!?!?! You may not like him because he actually thinks we should try to prevent war rather than bomb everyone to smithereens, but a hack?!?!

I’ve never heard Joe Biden called a hack, you unmitigated HACK.

Joe Biden is the Vice President of the United States. I’ve never heard of this Richard Cohen, but he should show more respect for the Office, especially when the last occupant from his party was a sociopath.

Wow, if Joe says the truth, the bureaucracy at the State Department is responsible. Probably lack of budget, and inability of the system to respond rapidly, change the allocation of resources, find some money elsewhere, send the message to the top and I mean Hillary than the President , CIA director, etc… I’m sure there are all sorts of administrative hurdles in those situations. Sad. And frustrating because the Romney campaign will take advantage of that.

    Romney praises Ryan debate
    By MAGGIE HABERMAN | 10/12/12 1:01 PM
POLITICO’s Anna Palmer reports: Mitt Romney kicked off his campaign speech Friday afternoon in Richmond, Va., with a verbal fist pump to his running mate Paul Ryan and his performance in the vice presidential debate.

I guess I would have wanted the same for the President from our Fickle supporters of the President.
They are way more together than we are.
Look, this President has been through a lot in the past 4 years, and his supporters has stayed with him. Now, all of a sudden, after a 90 minute debate, a lot of Democrats are now voting for Romney?
You have to be kidding me?

The republicans are rallying behind their candidate the way we should have last week. It’s still horrific, and Gallup is showing tha. A lot of those on our side including our alleged progressive media, gave Romney ammunition and continue to do so.

I admit I’m freaking out a little. When I see how effective Republicans are today at showing a unified front, I just seethe at the jackasses on our side who piled on.

I agree. It’s very frustrating when so-called Obama supporters push GOP and MSM talking points and attack the President for the slightest perceived mistake. Mitt Romney has been making huge errors and policy blunders (not just gaffes or occasional slips ups) all throughout the campaign, with very little backlash from his supporters in the media or elsewhere.

But one little seeming misstep by our President and it’s mass hysteria across the board. This is ridiculous and it’s getting tiresome.

          Among numerous factors:

democrats are not authoritarians and have less of a tribal attitude. It makes for a more imaginative and progressive party, but politically it can be deadly.

I think the other reason is that some progressive are not able to cope with the reality: in America there are so many powerful and structural forces aligned against the liberal agenda, it makes progressive change very very difficult. Reality is too painful so some live in a fantasy, and believe that if they have the “right” leader, everything will be easy. Hence they always scapegoat the “leader” when change doesn’t come as fast as they want. It’s, frankly, childish. ANd I would say authoritarian too. There ARE authoritarian personalities on the left. It’s erie sometimes how their language parallels the language of the tea party types.

Last note: it’s really BREAKING MY HEART to see President Obama pummeled like this for his difficult day last week. And what’s really really hurting me is to see him accused of being the sole reason why the polls are difficult right now. I always knew that some of the support for President Obama was soft. Many reasons, among them racial identity, beliefs in the myth of the businessman competent in the economy, effect of the propaganda machine, $$$$$ and media behind Romney, etc. The Obama campaign has ALWAYS said that the election would be close.

Lovepolitics, many of these so-called affluent Democrats who have media platforms would be just fine with a Romney presidency. If Romney gets elected they get to keep their jobs, keep their Bush tax cuts, and have very little else to worry about.

So I am not under any illusion that these guys are interested in what’s necessarily best for the country as a whole. They got theirs, and to hell with everyone else.

Smartypants asked a question this morning that had me thinking. She was wondering why (Little Boy) Ryan chose to try and humanize Willard with a story about him helping a family who lost loved ones in a tragic accident. Go read her piece. [Follow the ‘I need somebody to talk me down on this’ link at the right.] ]Anyway this tweet was somewhat of an offshoot for me

If you hear “Biden was mean” you say “Ryan was weak.”

If you hear “Biden was classless” you say “Ryan brought up Romney’s car accident anecdote knowing Biden had lost his family in a car accident, and Biden is classless?”

If you hear Biden “laughed and smiled too much” you say “I laugh at people who lie to me, too.”

    More suggestions here….

Mitt Romney’s campaign has quietly removed the endorsement by Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) from its website in the wake of revelations that the congressman pushed his mistress and patient to have an abortion.

The endorsement, which appeared to have been posted in the spring, was still live on MittRomney.com as of Thursday morning, but after The Huffington Post asked about it, the endorsement disappeared.
