    Hello Everyone,

Hope we are all keeping our chins up, our hopes high, and our confidence solid in winning this election.

That cartoon made my day! Yes, this is exactly what is happening: Pinocchio is using his long nose to cross the finish line. Brilliant!

    Have a great day.

One unintended consequence of Mitt’s mendacity, last night the number of people at our phone bank doubled! And it looks as if we’ll have great turnout for our GOTV training.

And yesterday I spotted a big old crowd of people lined up for lemonade at the local DMV office – probably registering to vote on the last day in my state! My son told me he’d never seen such a crowd there on a Tuesday morning, so it’s gotta be voters! Joy!

I am going to my first phone banking tomorrow in Long Beach, CA. I am excited and scared at the same time. There are so many people involved on TOD, and after all the negativity in the press and on MSNBC, I decided to not get bent out of shape, but get more involved. It’s far enough away, that I won’t meet any of my students (I need to remain an unbiased teacher of American History to 8th graders). It’s time for me to do more than tweet and give money.

Thank you, Joy Reid. Finally some recognition on Alex Wagner’s show about Romney’s pathological lying——and getting away with saying, “I didn’t mean what I was saying”, ‘the words I said were not what I meant’ etc.– and saying something on Wed. which is the exact opposite of what he said on Tuesday. Reid said the media has allowed this, that it is their responsibility to challenge this outrageous behavior, that Romney continues to lie because there are no consequences.

This article from Kevin Drum highlights the dilemma of whether or not to call Romney/Ryan liars directly…

“The second way is to just call Romney a liar to his face. But the conventional wisdom says you can’t do that. It’s too negative and voters don’t like it.

Why? Because one of the weird aspects of American politics is that voters, no matter how cynical they claim to be, basically accept politicians at their word when they make concrete promises.”

Didn’t Romney continually say PBO wasn’t telling the truth? Why do these things work for the Evil Cabal and not for us? I don’t understand it.

The Repubs have been ahead of this all the way and it drives me crazy. They’ve already pre-butted PBO calling DimMitt out on his lies. I heard it this morning: “When you have nothing to offer you call the other guy a liar.” It’s maddening that so many on the left couldn’t turn their visceral freakout into visceral pushback. PBO cannot do this alone and he shouldn’t have to.

Dem’s should have been better prepared for a setback and come out swinging. Another thing I’m sick of: Dem’s taking precious air time to say that Paul Ryan is a “nice guy” and I “really like him” like Adam Schiff did on Stephanie Miller this morning. Chuck Schumer is a great one for wasting air time saying how well he gets along with the [current] Republicans and what nice guys they are. Those comments were just dandy 15 years ago, but now stay on message. Don’t dilute it. You don’t have to be a pit bull but the collegiate days of governing were killed off by Newt Gingrich. When we’re outnumbered on the airwaves, don’t waste your time. Obviously, the undecideds are not sways by such gentlemanly behavior.

            October 10, 2012 at 12:41 pm

That irritates me too, even when PBO does it. I always wonder if there’s a law that you have to lavish high praise on your oppenint before you can criticize. All some people hear is the initial praise—–Romney’s a wonderful husband and family man etc.—–that’s what sticks, and the rest of the paragraph becomes less significant. I think Obama has dropped his Romney compliments lately tho, thankfully.

I’m not saying our guys need to be mean, but they need to stay focused and this kind of conciliatory talk weakens our position. It’s subtle, but it dilutes the messages and wastes time. It’s like a reflex, but it is not appropriate for this political climate. The subliminal message is that Republicans *know* that we are their enemy and view everything through that lens – it’s amazing how effective that can be. Every time someone says what a nice guy Paul Ryan is – we weaken our message. Maddening.

How nervous was Michelle Obama during her husband’s first debate with Mitt Romney? That’s easy. Just imagine the now infamous reaction of the parents of Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman as they squirmed with each twist their daughter took on the uneven bars during the London Games. “It’s like when I watch the Olympics, you all saw the Olympics with the gymnast’s parents who were watching … that’s how I feel,” the first lady said during a wide-ranging and intimate roundtable with iVillage and six other women’s sites before an early evening rally at a county fairgrounds in Leesburg, Virginia.

Mrs. Obama moved her body forward and back, a la Mr. and Mrs. Raisman, to demonstrate how she feels during debates. “But you can’t make any, you can’t gesture,” she said, such as “Go baby! Yes!” The moderator will have none of it! “They intimidate the hell out of you so … I’m there squeezing my hand and trying to make sure that I’m paying attention too.”

“It’s watching your loved one perform on a tight rope … and we have two more,” she said with a smile, indicating each will be another 90 minutes of nervous can’t-move-your-body-to-show-it tension.

Will women fall for Mitt’s moderate makeover?
    By Greg Sargent
With the gender gap shrinking as Mitt Romney surges, Dems are hoping Romney’s comments about abortion to the Des Moines Register yesterday have given them a shot at renewing their pitch for women and reopening that gap. Romney told the paper this:

“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”
A Romney spokesperson promptly walked that back: “Gov. Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.”

So Romney’s been using a new addition to his stump speech on Libya. He recalls that him and Ann met the ex-Seal that was one of the victims in the Benghazi attack. First, I figured this is way too convenient, someone musta reminded Romney that they met an then figures hey let’s put that in the stump speech. Well then a friend of the slain ex-Seal told a local radio show that he remembered the tale of the Romney meeting in a different light as told to him by his slain friend. Here’s the link to that story: http://t.co/qurUZo23

Well now this, the mother of the Seal has spoken out:
“Mother of killed former SEAL mentioned by Romney says “I don’t trust Romney”

“I don’t trust Romney. He shouldn’t make my son’s death part of his political agenda. It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama,” said Barbara Doherty, Glen’s mother.

Barack Obama Facebook campaign sees ‘likes’ soar

US President Barack Obama has enjoyed a surge in Facebook “likes”, thanks to a co-ordinated social media campaign.

His team paid for “Sponsored Stories” to appear in some users’ Facebook news feeds – regardless of whether they wanted to receive them.

President Obama’s page received more than one million “likes” in a single day – compared with about 30,000 per day in earlier weeks.

    ///

The growth comes as President Obama and Mr Romney look to ramp up their use of digital and social media ahead of November’s vote.

In 2008, President Obama’s campaign was praised for its innovative use of social media to engage young, often first-time, voters.

This time around, the efforts have been stepped up a notch. Both candidates have invested in getting good placement on both Facebook and Twitter – with campaign teams placing ads that appear whenever a certain word, such as “debate”, is searched for by a user.

For my fellow football heads: The new code of conduct for England players as put forth by the FA.

    General Conduct

    -Don’t be racist.
-Don’t say or do anything that Ashley Cole would say or do (this includes cheating on Cheryl Cole).
-If you decide to use Twitter, you may only use the words “hugs” and “geezers” like David Luiz.

Conduct and behavior when with England

-For players who are not Joe Hart: Play halfway decent for once.
-For players who are Joe Hart: Be flawless.
-For all: Act like an adult. Seriously. It’s really not difficult. Also, chew with your mouths closed.

How any breach will be dealt with

-Any player in violation of this code will be forced to shake hands with Prince William while staring at the ground in shame as his teammates laugh at him (see sample image below) for no less than 120 minutes. He will also be forced to go to bed without any sweets.

Are you all aware of the reason “Morning Joe” Scarborough resigned his seat 6 months after getting re-electedj in 2001? There was a dead 22 year old intern named Lori found dead in his Florida headquarters in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. Apparently the medical examiner’s office was involved in a cover-up that was never proven. The case is still open. I say we hammer the crap out of him via twitter, email, whatever. I have already sent a message saying if he EVER decided to run for elected office again, I will make it my personal mission that everyone knows about this. Every time I send him any emails I always end it with “found any dead interns lately Joe?” This is why Markos Moulitas is banned from MSNBC. He confronted Joe about the dead intern once….and poof, banned! I cannot stand his arrongant, condescening ass. Anyone want to play along with me and hammer Joe till his head explodes?

I haven’t commented here for quite awhile, but love TOD and commenters. This is a my reliable place to come for President Obama! Thank you. 🙂

Regarding the next foreign policy debate, I think POTUS will kick Romney’s ass. Obama is probably one of the best war time presidents we’ve had. Romney has been a complete ass about foreign policy and now he thinks everyone likes him being aggressive so he will probably go overboard on it. He’s a natural bully. the GOP cut funding for the State Dept and that’s one reason there was a problem with security when Chris Stevens was killed in Libya.

Here’s an excellent post about the debates. Reminder of how good Joe Biden is and how well he handled Palin and also talks about the format for POTUS’s next foreign policy debate:

    http://www.emptywheel.net/2012/10/08/jonathan-chait-is-wrong-about-debate-formats/

“When DC Democrats talk about Biden’s upcoming debate performance, they seem to forget how Biden did in his debate against Sarah Palin in 2008. That was one of the biggest challenges in 08, pitting a guy with over 30 years service as a successful policy wonk Senator against a blithering, but very attractive female, idiot. It is often difficult for men to get the dynamic of debating women–both respecting them but not bullying them–right, and this was all the more dangerous. But Biden nailed it….

… He credibly addresses men and women who otherwise aren’t being spoken to in this election.

If Joe Biden is an angry old man, he’s a lot like the angry old men who will swing this election.

Whatever Biden says to rebut Ryan, he is of all four candidates the most personable to people outside of the Beltway. What are called gaffes inside the Beltway are often regarded as authentic outside of it….

    We can DO this!!

      October 10, 2012 at 2:18 pm

I’m very confident in President Obama’s abilities, but I don’t want the expectations to be sky high as they were for the last debate. This sets the stage for another round of critics.

Let’s face it, Romney is a sleazy operator and it’s difficult FOR ANYONE to debate a guy who constantly changes his positions and is able to lie with aplomb. If you’ve heard about or watched Romney’s speech on foreign policy this week, you have an idea of how he will approach the debate on foreign policy.

President Obama has a more difficult challenge because like in everything else, there have been set-backs in foreign policy and no doubt Romney will try to capitalize on that. Another challenge he has is that Romney plays into the fantasies of americans, into the myth of the omnipotent empire. President Obama’s approach is much more REALISTIC, but are americans mature enough to accept the REALITY of a world where the USA can’t dictate everything like they used to?

So with all due respect, I think it’s not realistic to expect that President Obama will cream Romney in the debate on foreign policy. He will old his own though, he will try to point out Romney’s contradictions with previous positions ( I hope he brings out the fundraising tape where Romney said he didn’t believe in the peace process re IsraĂŤl; but President Obama may choose not to talk about it to protect the national interest of the USA.)

Anyway… President Obama will make us proud. The ideal situation would be a big win and a big rebound in the polls. But if the debate is considered a draw, it will be ok and President Obama should maintain his slight lead.

    Good Afternoon TOD

There was mention of this upthread but our phonebanks this week have seen bursting at the seams with volunteers. On Monday they had over 150 volunteers come out to help make calls and last night I had to sit in my car and make my calls because there was no room in that big ole office of ours.

I’ve had had no interest in the hand-wringing and the cable chatter this week so I’ve channeled my energy to volunteering every night after work. It keeps me calm and I’m so inspired by the work being done on the ground. We were told on Monday by our Team Leader to keep our heads down (reading call sheets), our noses to the grindstone (making contact with voters) and our boots on the ground (turning out the vote). The rest she said is all noise. They talked to us about how OFA has built an unprecedented force for this election. We will turnout the vote and we will win!!

Have a great Productive O’Day Everyone.

    Hello All

Hope t get a chance to catch my breath in the next few days and give everyone a detailed report on seeing PBO in SF Monday. He was great.

For now I will share what I feel is a much more important question

What can each of us DO TODAY to help President Obama get elected?

I will be using the predictive dialer from home to call into Colorado – I pledge to do at least 2 hours?

What can each of you do, share your commitment below.

    Press On

    From Nancy Smash:

New Poll: Democrats lead by five points (46-41) in the race for Congress

We are within range of replacing the Tea Party Congress with a Democratic House for President Obama.

But we need to close this spending gap.

Yesterday, we received word that Speaker Boehner’s Super PAC allies are “dumping an avalanche of cash into congressional races in an attempt to protect the House GOP majority.”

We cannot allow our chances for a Democratic majority to slip away simply because our candidates are drowned out by a wave of corporate special interest cash.

Will you donate $3 or more to fight Republican attacks before tonight’s ad buy deadline?

When the polls close on November 6th, we need to know that we did everything we could when it mattered most.

Right now, we are just $200,000 short of what we need to fight these Republican attacks. Please chip in what you can before tonight’s ad buy deadline:

Off to pitch in a few bucks. If you can, join me.
