Washington Post editorial: Here is one way to distill the confusing charges and countercharges of the first presidential debate:

President Obama has no adequate plan to cope with the frightening level of debt the U.S. government is accumulating. His proposal would only worsen the level of U.S. debt.

Republican nominee Mitt Romney has a plan to make it worse.

To understand that harsh assessment, you have to spend a few minutes with some facts that Mr. Romney did his best to obscure Wednesday.

“First of all, I don’t have a $5 trillion tax cut,” he said. In fact, Mr. Romney has proposed lowering income tax rates, abolishing the estate tax and making other changes that would cost $5 trillion over 10 years…..

…. The Republican cites studies that he says prove that wrong, but when you look closely, they prove him wrong….

…. here’s the really scary part: Mr. Romney’s plan is irresponsible, even if he could pay for it….

Paul Krugman: “No. 1,” declared Mitt Romney in Wednesday’s debate, “pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan.” No, they aren’t — as Mr. Romney’s own advisers have conceded in the past, and did again after the debate.

Was Mr. Romney lying? Well, either that or he was making what amounts to a sick joke. Either way, his attempt to deceive voters on this issue was the biggest of many misleading and/or dishonest claims he made over the course of that hour and a half….

…. What Mr. Romney did in the debate was, at best, to play a word game with voters, pretending to offer something substantive for the uninsured while actually offering nothing. For all practical purposes, he simply lied about what his policy proposals would do.

How many Americans would be left out in the cold under Mr. Romney’s plan? One answer is 89 million. According to the nonpartisan Commonwealth Foundation, that’s the number of Americans who lack the “continuous coverage” that would make them eligible for health insurance under Mr. Romney’s empty promises. By the way, that’s more than a third of the U.S. population under 65 years old.

Those photos say it all — we love President Obama. We’re more than fired up and ready to go!!

Had to turn off Morning Joe this morning — way too much gloating over Romneybot’s lying-on-crack debate performance. I’ll stick to Current TV, thank you very much.

Well, I’ll feel like a little kid when we’re all celebrating on election night! #AlwaysForward!!!

Oh I hope the Jobs report is good, shut these Pundits up.
Seriously, that would be sweet, because everybody and their Mother is piling on.
One thing I have noticed, the Obama camp must not think the Debate was that big a deal, they are not all over the News.

Ed Scultz is on the Today Show—-never invited till he was highly critical of Obama (debate)——telling the most outrageous story ever. He said he heard from a lady in Pa. who said when she knows more than the president, it’s a problem. Ed Scultz—–joining the rt. wing in pushing the biggest lie of all time, that Obama is ‘dumb’. Inexcusable. Disgusting.

I didn’t watch his show last night. And I will no longer watch. He and Tweety showed their true colors.

    • October 5, 2012 at 8:17 am

Ed Shultz is a Nader Boy, it’s evident, he has on Bernie Sanders every night slamming the President.
A little research tells you, that Nader and Danders see eye to eye on everything.
These Purists are detrimental to our Party. At least the Tea Party ate not purists and fall in line with the Republican Party.

Guess I gave him too much credit last night, saying he comes around quicker than Matthews. Okay, so he has that Twitter chyron running during his show asking for input. Why not all the tweeters here swamp his ass and call him out on his waffling? Then let him know you’re really through? Or are we really through, in the pinch of this crucial election where we rely on info from all sources? When are we ever really done giving these people views? Just wondering.

    • October 5, 2012 at 12:49 pm

This is horrible. This is probably the most outrageous thing I’ve heard Ed Schultz say. How offensive. I will NEVER watch his show again.

  12. October 5, 2012 at 8:13 am

I just can’t get over, how the right is now attacking the President. They say he is Dumb and lazy.
    That is just unbelievable.

    • 36 hopefruit2

That’s what the right does best. All of these are coded N-words. And the racist mainstream media is complicit in this.

      • October 5, 2012 at 8:19 am

So, why don’t they just call him the N- word, get it over with? Wouldn’t that make them feel better? Jeeze!

They think they are “smart” by using other words – that they know will be translated as N-clang. The President ignores them – as he has done all his life. What is seriously dumb are the pundits thinking anyone other than their dumb base will believe what they say.

I think it’s most enjoyable that despite Willard’s best efforts, the most talked about topics from his campaign have been lies, a chair and big bird.

They are the “Do Nothing” party with no ideas. They’re also the same people who got dizzy in President Obama’s first days when he was so busy that they couldn’t keep up with their attacks because he was everywhere. I could care less what their opinion is of anyone or anything, because they are the lowest form of humanity. They add nothing to the universe. They just take away.

Ed runs on emotions, that’s why I was never able to watch him for very long. Just started getting used to him this year…then he goes & explodes over this debate…! I loved in “Rewrite” above when Lawrence asked “and what does a matador do to a bull?” !!!!! Good one, & that’s how I saw the debate. We know & trust PBO and I believe he knows exactly where to take it from here.

I could not get onto TOD last night…very upsetting…sorta hooked on coming here & had major withdrawal symptems. Major SAD!!!
    Good Friday everyone!!!

  14. 45 utaustinliberal

Lawrence’s ‘Rewrite’ was fantastic. You never ever count out the matador because in the end, the matador runs the sword straight through the bull.

      October 5, 2012 at 10:10 am

I just watched Lawrence’s Rewrite. It was great!!! So true…the matador wins in the end! It’s also like bringing a knife to a gun fight. To me, Myth is like an annoying fly. At the right time, PBO will swat it!!!!

Now Today is doing something I’ve never seen them do—–airing a Daily Show clip—–at the top of the show——from last night with Stewart going on and on slamming Obama’s debate performance and showing the Tweety clip where he was going wild. I have never seen such a one-sided effort as NBC has been launching. Guest host Gregory was laughing his head off, looked like the happiest guy in the whole world that they were airing an anti-Obama tirade.

    • October 5, 2012 at 8:32 am

The Luberal media is anti Obama, no question in my mind.
However, they are also, at times anti Robney. Which is what Democrats like.
The liberal media is very cynical, negative all the time, never any praise just negativity for everybody.
MSNBainC will not be around in ten years, as a result of this.

      • 50 99ts
        October 5, 2012 at 8:37 am

Jovie – you make a really good point – the media is negative – it likes negative – it talks negative – all the time – regardless as to which person/people or party they are discussing.

This is what is so wonderful about TOD. Everyone comes here to hear the good things that are happening, with the President, the first family, the economy. the states, the country, the military etc etc. It is so nice to have a place to go to hear all the good news.

      • 52 nospin
        October 5, 2012 at 11:29 am

my dad who is 80 watches MSNBC (unfortunately I turned him onto it four years ago during POs run for the Presidency and now he is hooked). He fell for the gambit on debate night and repeated some of the talking points yesterday. I called him out last night. Then I told him, when the left and the right agree on something, when you can easily visualize them running around with hair on fire AND they are apoplectic about something related to President Obama, clearly that is a great indicator that the President is winning.

Then this morning Dad said the jobs numbers were great, more folks are aligning themselves to the President across demographics and the biggest story line of this morning is Big Bird.

        All I said was. . . . “imagine that”

Just remember, those who laugh last, laugh the BEST.

So come Nov 7, we will have the last laugh.

John Stewart, David gregory, all of these men are suffering from INFERIORITY COMPLEXES and need the false security of a media studio to attack the President to make themselves feel better. Our President is ignoring the likes of John Stewart, Tweety, Ed, Gregory so much that they can’t STAND it. They are are frothing at the mouths.

“, those who laugh last, laugh the BEST.”

Thanks hopefruit. Just as too many of PBO’s supporters expect him to be exceptional all the time, he can’t be. And while all the RWNJ’s are having a field day, whooping it up….their laughs are premature and they should not become too comfortable with one event. We all should be mindful of how PBO is no drama all the time. He is purposeful, deliberate, studious, while the rest of everybody is looking for optics. Let’s get back to reality. I’m listening to radio right now and a regular guest is saying it’s possible that PBO knew the employment numbers before the debate and why he may not have felt the need to sully himself by debating a fool “in all his false glory”- my words.

    • October 5, 2012 at 8:35 am

Yes, I saw that. It was sick. Also, regarding Ed: Before I came back here to TOD, I just sent him an email. Said that I had been a VERY loyal listener/watcher for YEARS……that I even forgave him for his actions in 2010, but that that loyalty has ended. Said that I will miss listening/watching, but I must stand by my principles and I WILL support my President….said that what he has done is no different than Romney–flipping and flopping…..said he is a “fair weather” supporter. Pointed out that I trust our President and his team…..that he always has a LONG game plan.

I do recall in March/April when we had gotten some positive reports for a few consecutive months, Tweety declared that these numbers so early didn’t matter – that it was the report in Sept/OCTOBER that mattered. Well, Mr. Tweety – there you have it. The same Tweety also said that if the unemployment rate falls below 8%, then PBO would get elected but if it went to 9% then he would lose.

Well, Tweety, what…er…say you today? I shall be watching you closely.

If unemployment went to 9%, why would you vote back in the people who caused it to go to 9% and prevented anything to help fix the problem they cause, and what would you be expecting from them to fix it when all their promises include the “solutions” that caused the mess in the first place? That argument has always been stupid, and I expect nothing better from the media.

  31. October 5, 2012 at 8:48 am

You know, in hindsight, now that the dust is settling, I think it was wise of PBO and his team not to go on a mea culpa jag about the debate. They said a few words about making adjustments and the President picked up his speed and went in for the count the very next morning. NO handwringing and most certainly no panic. This is what leadership and true strategic agility and professionalism looks like.

And today we have such great news about the UE rate going down and poll numbers in key states going way, way up. I’m SO SO SO proud of OFA and everyone who has volunteered to do the lion’s share of phonebanking battleground states. I know CA alone has logged way over a million calls. So true – when President Obama makes adjustments, he’s still going in the same direction. He has a long term view and he follows a “North Star”. He’s consistent – even if tactics may adjust, the worthy end goal remains steady.

Compare and contrast with his “opponent” who is not worthy. Flip flops. Lies. Major strategy shifts within the same hour. Unreliable staff. Dishonesty. No core.

      He’s not worthy.

It’s one thing to spout their fact-challenged tantrums on their own shows. Ed never got national attention until he called PBO ‘dumb’ (which is rich, coming from fact-challenged Ed Schultz). To do it two days after the debate, when so much of the political landscape has shifted to Mitt’s lies and a fresh, reasonable look at PBO’s performance, that Ed Schultz would still be throwing his tantrum on national TV is a disgrace.

The numbers make me so happy! Romneys talking points gone. Now if our Pres had brought up the 47% Romney would have said he was wrong, so sorry and gotten the sympathy of 60 million. Did nt happen, win for Obama. Now the numbers, good news.

I agree completely, the President accomplished all of this with GOP obstruction, and his own party doubting is abilities. Lets see:

      Chip’s
      Affordable Health Care for millions
      End the War in Iraq
      Lillie Letterbed Fair Pay Act
Unemployment the went as high as 10% down to 7.8%
31 months of private sector job growth……..

      and the list goes on.

This affirms my belief President Obama HAS THIS! I am sooooooo thrilled. I didn’t freak out after the debate (had to talk him down), I felt more like Lawrence O’Donnell, and I am so glad Imwas able to keep the faith.
