VIDEO: VOTER CHALLENGERS (Brennan Center for Justice)

    By Nicolas Riley – 08/30/12

Since 2011, a wave of restrictive voting laws in state legislatures across the country has threatened access to the voting booth for millions of Americans. But little attention has been given to the 46 states that have laws that allow private citizens to challenge the eligibility of prospective voters, either on or before Election Day. A new Brennan Center report, Voter Challengers, examines the laws that give rise to citizen-led challenge efforts and the difficulties such efforts create for both voters and election officials. It focuses on the shortcomings of existing voter challenge rules, the historical origins of these laws, the recent problems challengers have caused, and how lawmakers and election officials have responded to those problems. The report, which is based on the Brennan Center’s extensive analysis of challenger laws in all 50 states, concludes by proposing recommendations for future reform.

Thanks for the fun video, Chips!!

Let’s all realize that #BainMitt is running a ‘private equity campaign’ – it is a major weakness that we know he has only amplified by the fact that he can’t come anywhere near matching turnout generated not just by the President, but also by the First Lady, the VP and Dr Biden. During these last 43 days, that weakness will become ever more obvious.

Yoo Hoo yous TODs!!! Happy getting day to all my O peeps! I don’t know why Rong and Rong Jr. haven’t just thrown in the hat. Especially junior who was thrown under the bus by Rong on 60 Minutes last night. Rong picks Ronger as VP precisely because of his budget plan, then tells the whole nation ‘Who cares about junior’s plan? This is my show and Junior was just chosen as a shiny object to distract those people. I think the only sane person may be Ronger’s wife. At least she has the good sense to keep her yap shut.

My political take today is don’t forget to join one of these today from the campaign team:

    1. Join the National Call Team, a special force of people who will make the most important calls this campaign needs to make. The Team coordinates a lot of its efforts through Dashboard, the online hub for our organizing work.

    2. Join the first ever Dashboard Open House on Monday, September 24th, at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Dashboard is where you can connect with other organizers who live where you live or who share your interests — and get plugged into the efforts to re-elect President Obama. It’s also the place to learn more about the National Call Team, get to know the folks who are a part of it, and make your first calls as a new member.

At Monday’s Dashboard Open House, you’ll log on from your computer and get treated to a special livestream, with updates from campaign manager Jim Messina and national field director Jeremy Bird on the progress of our ground game. And you’ll get to try out some of Dashboard’s powerful features right then and there.

If you’re out to have a big impact in this election, it’s as simple as joining the National Call Team and logging onto Dashboard.

So join the National Call Team on Dashboard now, RSVP for the open house, and get ready — it’s full-speed ahead from here:

There is No doubt that Queen Ann is treated differently. However, I am also noticing that due to her MS and breast cancer, the press has been extra careful with her.

Has any one forgotten HOW Mrs. Clinton was treated until in 2008? They called Hillary Clinton everything in the book. The press gave her a break momentarily in 1998…..when her space was invaded during a senatorial debate.

I agree with you that Our national press with 98% of them covering president Obama…..must have their share of bigot minded few.

yes, and i think they are. look at the way the polls are trending. it’s true that myth and r-lyin have given us every reason to run from the rethug ticket. but miss ann has been their ‘humanizer’, and those robot jokes have not gone away. instead, we now have jokes about her, too. i think americans quickly leaped from ‘how rude’ to ‘no way would i vote for these people.’

good article on the predictive value of intrade, from princeton election consortium:

‘ ~There are several likely reasons for why InTrade does not reflect true probabilities: (1) Bidders overestimate both current and future uncertainty, even in cases like a Presidential re-election race where movement is small. (2) A few of these markets trade at low volume until Election Day approaches. The net outcome is that they start to become more predictive late in the season, and appear to be a lagging indicator of well-aggregated polls, and of course other events like Rep. Akin’s β€œlegitimate rape” statement. Look for markets to catch up with polls by mid-October. ‘

I don’t put too much stock in one poll, just because as any good statistician knows one set of data, no matter how significant, can still be due to chance. And of course with polls you can have sampling factors playing in as well. This does not even have to mean pollester are ‘cooking the number’ it could just be the random chance of the sample analyzed. I tend to focus more on the trends. So what do multiple polls show. North Carolina was not that great before but it is trending PBO now. THIS IS FANTASTIC. I have been phone banking there and will continue to. If we win NC again it will be a route for Romney and that will be pure joy.

Education? Just turned on tv to MSNBC and turned it off again as Tamron Hall was on and said she wanted to get tweets and emails on how the audience felt about the new movie on education called Take Back or something like that. It is about two individuals rescuing their school in an inner city. She said many have not seen it yet but that shouldn’t stop them from answering the question of how they felt about it!
WTF!!! She is pushing for responses from people that have no info about what on earth she is even talking about? It encapsulizes what is wrong with the media. Legitimizing the idea there’s nothing wrong with people speaking out with no facts at all.

As Mr. Romney embarked on a bus tour with the goal of spreading additional unease about his candidacy, his campaign manager reflected on a program of systematic alienation that has so far β€œworked like clockwork.”

β€œWe really got the ball rolling at the Olympics,” Mr. Rhoades said. β€œI seriously doubted that Mitt could turn a visit to London into a show of international ineptitude, but he was like, β€˜Matt, trust meβ€”I can do this.’ ”

Mr. Rhoades also credited the addition of Rep. Paul Ryan to the ticket for being β€œinvaluable” in scaring off potential voters: β€œMitt knew he could get booed off the stage at the N.A.A.C.P., but it takes someone special to get booed off the stage at the A.A.R.P.”

Most of us learned as young children about the Emma Lazarus sonnet of 1883, engraved on a plaque and mounted on the Statue of Liberty, called, “The New Colossus.” Maybe Mitt’s school never taught it. He said recently he’s for immigration reform which would attract “the best and the brightest.” Yes, many “best and brightest” immigrants have come to our shores; many have been brought here against their will (such as the slaves who built the White House he thought he’d be occupying, since it’s “their turn”). But Mitt seems to think that’s the “qualification” to come here. I checked Emma’s sonnet, and searched my own beating heart, and thought about my great grandparents from Ireland and Germany, and I don’t see that qualification in how our country has welcomed – and celebrated – immigrants who have traveled here, stayed, and helped to build our nation into what we fondly call America the Beautiful.

    Emma wrote:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips, “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I life my lamp beside the golden door!”

^^^ Now, that’s what “Freedom” really means, Mitt.

    • September 24, 2012 at 2:36 pm

Absolutely beautiful Jacqueline – I never knew the whole poem. My great grandparents were definitely not deemed the best and the brightest by anyone when they came here for greater opportunity, but they founded a loving family of contributing middle class citizens teachers, journalists, consultants, (the occassional repressive repug), feminists, yogis, businesswomen, military active and vets… Thank you for the minute to pause and reflect on what they made possible.

Thank you for sharing your story, too, Susan. Of course, whether or not we got to meet them (I didn’t), our great grandparents were the “best and brightest” to our families. And don’t even get me started (again) on my coal miner grandfather, who went into the mines in Pennsylvania at age 11 to help support his family. I did know him, he had little education, but he was not only the oldest person I’ve ever loved, but the real bright light in my young life (the best person I ever knew), even though he passed away when I was only 10 years old. Don’t get me started on Mitt’s using coal miners merely as a backdrop to one of his pretend campaign rallies, either!

JOB, thank you for this. My father was an immigrant and so were my grandparents on my mother’s side. Nobody would have called them PhD material, but they worked hard, did the best they could for their children and produced big extended families of productive Americans. Mitt Romney has not got one clue what working Americans do for this country. They may not be the richest or accumulate the biggest pile of “things,” but most of them are decent, loving, honest and hard working and do their best for their families and their neighbors. We are a democracy, Willard. Demos=people. This is what generations of Americans have fought for, not to fill the fat pockets of elitists like you and your pathetic running mate.

Loved your story, Jackie, and your thoughts on this.

I forgot to mention our Native Americans, who were here when the first of us arrived in the “new” country. Not to make light of their plight, but if the dreaded Mitt or his granddaddy had asked them to “self-deport,” when his clan got here, perhaps their only response would have been, “WTF? YOU self-deport, —-head!”

BuzzFeed posted emails between the two which showed Reines getting angrier and angrier about Hastings’ aggressive questioning. I heard something on the radio this morning having to do with the Republicans jumping on a comment PBO said in his 60 Minutes report about knowing there would be bumps in the road having to do with the Arab Spring. The GOP said 4 deaths are not bumps in the road. I then watched my tivoed 60 Minutes seeing there was no connection whatsoever between what PBO said and the deaths. Fineman either did not watch the segment or is purposely trying to endorse the GOP meme for whatever his purpose for that is.
