congrats LL – I was over there talking to myself about Mitt Romney not being able to cope with media personalities – how would he ever cope with the job of President. I think he would probably quit halfway through a first term (not that he will get the chance to do that).

Hello, Pamela! Daily, eh? Well at least you can peek in at times during the day. I’m mostly restricted when I’m at work. For someone like me who likes to know ‘everything’, it’s highly frustrating! 😉

Yes, frustrating, no question about that, cause even though ‘peeking in’ may seem luxurious, it is not very thirst-quenching without time to stay in the conversation, knowing it is going on without me! Still, and all, I don’t mind, as I love the work I do, and I tell myself I am good for the economy! Especially it gives me some extra loot to DONATE! (speaking of donating:

I started out with a modest amount, then only added 1/2 each time I raised the bar ~ that way the red line always showed me as halfway or MORE than the goal! Very encouraging, and yes it is still climbing, thanks to the many generous people who gather here on TOD, thaks to Chipsticks posting our links often, and thanks to PBO for inspiring us all to donate! 🙂 Fingers crossed I win the final Dinner with Barack; I entered yesterday, oh man, how would l love to have dinner with him! Pretty sure I wouldn’t be ale to eat a thing, or speak at all, but hopefully will continue to breathe right through whie listening to everyone else! And I can smile! 🙂

I’m glad to see this, Hf. There is nothing, NOTHING, Willard can do to improve his standing with Hispanics and without more support from them he’s doomed. He thinks he can say and do anything and then somehow, magically, people will forgive and forget. Well, not in the world real people inhabit and certainly not from a phony like him.

What really gets me about Romney and people like him is that they not only are incredibly selfish, greedy, entitled and condescending — they want to be worshiped. It’s not enough that their wealth has increased exponentially over the past 30 years, and particularly since 2000 (Bush’s tax cuts). No, they can’t just be happy with their windfalls and go on about their business. They also feel they should be *admired* as exceptional human beings, that they really are intrinsically and fundamentally *better* than people who don’t collect (I can’t even say make) as much money as they do.

They tell themselves and each other so many myths about their innate goodness that they truly cannot understand other people’s perceptions of them. Their insecurities flare up and manifest in the form of contempt whenever someone dares point out their shallowness, their lack of character, their stupidity or any other flaw in their makeup. They have convinced themselves that they are good simply because they are rich.

It’s truly appalling. I wish the non-pathological rich would counter these let-them-eat-cake plutocratic assholes.

Thanks UTAL. It’s disgusting. Their God truly is Money and they worship it above all else, then turn around and say the rest of us are unworthy. Incredible. I just want to scream to Willard Moocher-In-Chief Romney: “HOW DARE YOU?!?!?”

This is a man whose father was once on welfare and whose running mate once collected Social Security. HOW DARE YOU?!? 👿

      September 19, 2012 at 11:58 pm

Romney has spent too many years blowing away any opposition to his thoughts and deeds as “they are just jealous of my wealth and success”. I have some thoughts as to what he probably said to the wife and children if they dared to disagree, also, too.

He can’t change – and doesn’t want to. Everyone who criticizes him (including the media) is wrong, doesn’t understand or hates him (most don’t – there is nothing there to hate). Miss Ann (in my opinion) is worse – she doesn’t even have the fundraiser esteem that most wealthy women subscribe to, to give their lives something other than the “mother” meme.

And – I so believe in the mother meme – but not the Miss Ann variation. At the minute I am totally swamped with the grandmother meme. I had forgotten how overwhelming are the first few months for a new mother – despite she is bubbling and I am exhausted.

I wouldn’t be surprised by anything that comes out about his family life. I remember when it was revealed that he always eats first because he can’t be bothered to wait for his wife, kids or grandkids to eat. What an ass.

Bravo, PJ! You really captured the character and essence of the Romneys and many of the current rich people who support him. By the way, unlike the old captains of industry, many of the rich people today derive their wealth not from producing useful products, but from speculation and manipulation of money.

Thanks, nathkatun. September 20, 2012 at 12:57 pm

From what I have read the questions will be given to the candidates ahead of time. Romney can have it all scripted ahead with little sound bites. He can do fine in the debates. It may be hard to get ahead in the debates due to the format of the debates, timing of commercial breaks etc. I always remember that ’08 ABC primary debate with George Stephanopolis and Charlie. It was rigged blatently against Sen. Obama. We all complained and they were taken to task over it.

        • 77 hopefruit2
          September 20, 2012 at 2:20 pm

The questions will be given ahead of time, but they won’t know their opponents’ rebuttals to their responses ahead of time, and that’s where the problem will occur for Romney. Unlike the GOP primaries, where Romney was able to intimidate his opponents, Obama is not going to be intimidated by Mitt Romney, nor will he be intimidated by the format of the debate.

This is NOT the Dem primary 2008. President Obama has already been president for 3.5 years, has given on-his-feet responses in all kinds of settings. He has gotten used to answering tough and in some cases, hostile and aggressive questioning during press conferences and interviews to cable news stations.

I am not concerned about President Obama in this regard.

    • September 20, 2012 at 12:29 am

I watched his debate against Kennedy, Romney is fairly forceful, Kennedy however was moreso. But, similar to what happened when Santorum & Perry started to get at him, Romney has a pretty bad temper. I think its going to come out right at the start because of all the RWers telling him to be more aggressive. He is going to look like a madman & crazy.

PBO is going to do what he normally does, which will irritate Romney even more.

    • 79 nathkatun7
      September 20, 2012 at 12:45 am

Lisa, I think they are just being pre-emptive. They know they will declare Romney the winner no matter what; so they are setting up a rationale ahead of time to justify what they plan to do. I think they are sadly mistaken. Somehow the media failed to learn a lesson from the 2008 presidential debates. If I remember correctly, most of the media pundits declared Sen. John McCain the winner of the debates, but the viewers said absolutely not. As far as the viewers were concerned, Sen. Barack Obama won all three of the debates. The poor media had to report the results of their viewers who were not easily fooled or swayed by the self-important media pundits.

By the way, I don’t see how the easily irritable Mitt Romney would be able to win a debate against a cool and confident Barack Obama. I obviously don’t like the moderators of the debates; especially Crowley and Scheiffer. They will try to trip President Obama. But I am absolutely certain that he will rise to the occasion. After all, he has had four years of experience dealing with the jackals that masquerade as the WH Press.

Romney Campaign Cautious With Ad Budget, Even in Key States

    {Snip}

One major reason appears to be that Mr. Romney’s campaign finances have been significantly less robust than recent headlines would suggest. Much of the more than $300 million the campaign reported raising this summer is earmarked for the Republican National Committee, state Republican organizations and Congressional races, limiting the money Mr. Romney’s own campaign has to spend.

With polls showing President Obama widening his lead in some of these states and the race a dead heat in others, Mr. Romney’s lack of a full-throttle media campaign is risky, especially as he struggles to get his message out over the din of news about his campaign’s recent setbacks.

Well, that’s the thing: he can’t actually give money to Mitt. He can give to the super PACs, but so far that money has been spectacularly wasted. The GOP thought Citizens United would deliver them to the Promised Land. Instead they’re going to be permanently on Pisgah, looking on in frustration.

    • September 20, 2012 at 12:40 am

  16. September 19, 2012 at 11:41 pm

They just released the second half of the redistribution tape(so lame)-

I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody’s got a shot.  How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities.

    • 92 nathkatun7
      September 20, 2012 at 12:55 am

Absolutely nothing is wrong with what the President said, Jovie! Except for morons and manipulators who will pick just one word “redistribution” and runaway with it without putting it in context. The same way they did with “you didn’t build that” when the president was referring to roads, bridges, and other infrastructures that enable businesses to market their goods.

  17. September 19, 2012 at 11:45 pm

And here is Robney new strategy-

The plan, described by top aides and advisers in interviews this week, is an acknowledgment that Romney is in enough of a hole that he cannot depend on the presidential debates to turn his candidacy around. In fact, Romney, who recently did five mock debates in a 48-hour period to practice up, has confided to advisers that it may be hard to win a debate because every attack against President Barack Obama will seem stale, while the attacks on him will seem fresher and newsier to a hostile media.

Instead, Romney plans to dial back on fundraisers and vastly increase his personal appearances – both on the stump and in ads – to convince what’s left of the undecided voters that Obama has been a disappointment and that he has a specific plan that is less risky than the status quo.

Rather than talk about the broader economy, Romney will increasingly talk about his plans in terms of the effect on families, the aides said. This started before the Republican convention, when he boiled his 59-point plan for the national economy down to a five-point “Plan for a Stronger Middle Class.”

The emerging strategy comes after several days of soul-searching. Romney officials are very clear-eyed about the damage done by two straight weeks of bad media coverage and the embarrassing comments caught on tape (see below for their assessment of what hurt the most in the past 10 days). They don’t dispute they are locked in serious turbulence, but also take solace that things are not worse after what they consider the darkest stretch of the campaign.

“We are going to look back at this as the week he got his act together, or the beginning of the end,” said a top Republican who works closely with the campaign.

    -/

    Your thoughts?

    • September 19, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Gosh, it’s dawning on Mitt Romney that he has to do more than fundraisers to get elected. Mope.

I read a diary at dKos that documents why CEO’s are sociopaths. this is actually being studied legitimately. the lying is part of it: it’s all about what works at the moment.

But here’s the thing: a CEO ‘leads’ employees. they have to do what he says. What Romney doesn’t realize (or the entire insane MBA president model) is that the President WORKS FOR US. We HIRE him. It is astonishingly insulting to treat the entire country like hired lackeys, existing only to boost a bottom line.

    • 109 jacquelineoboomer
      September 20, 2012 at 12:02 am

Romney’s advisers – and, of course, Romney – think debates are attacks on the other guy. Not policy positions. Not standing up for what you believe it. Pretty much how he’s run his godawful campaign, too. I hope Romney’s wearing his depends over the magic underwear.

    • 111 Melissa
      September 20, 2012 at 12:14 am

That *could* have worked if he had started in JULY, not 45 days before the elections! I mean, if there is an undecided right now and they’ve heard the tapes, how could they trust anything that comes out of his mouth? I’m probably one of the few people here who actually think that the debates will most likely be a wash. Those things are staged, people have their own talking points and no one has enough time to sufficiently land a fatal blow to their opponents ( unless you’re Newt Gingrich and the blow you’re landing is aimed at the moderator..). Obama supporters will say Obama won, Romney supporters will say Romney won and the media is sooo clueless, turn off the t.v and pundits after the debates unless you want to nurse a headache for the next 2 days.
But since at this point, there are more Obama supporters than there are Romney’s, then all this bode well for POTUS.

Melissa, I think your take on the debates is spot-on. I must admit that I particularly liked your advice that after the debates people should turn off the t.v. if they want to avoid getting headaches from the “sooo clueless” media pundits. Except for a few exceptions, I’ve totally lost faith in the U.S. media.

You guys are too much! Poor Mitt Romney, he just can’t seem to get away with anything. He probably was counting on on this new appearance to relate to Latinos so that they don’t have to pay any attention to his policies. I doubt that he imagined that there would be people, like the TOD brigades, who would scrutinize his new Latino/Hispanic shade.

Wasn’t it at the beginning of September that the Romney crew announced that their strategy was to cause President Obama to make unforced errors. And as the month played out, the only errors have come from Romney. Now they have another bright idea. Should be entertaining.

On the debates. In 2008 the pundits all immediately called the debate each time for McCain. Then when the polls rolled in, the people picked Obama. Expect the pundits to do the same this time as well no matter how badly Romney does.

That’s right, Sharon! I think that’s why the new media meme, about how Romney can still win, is predicted on Romney’s superior debating skills. They media pundits are all geared up to declare Mitt Romney the winner of the debates. My view is that the media will once again be shamed, as they were in 2008, for underestimating President Obama.

A big part of public perception was the good work done by progressives. dKos was great for this: lists of online polls so our side could register what we thought. It happened instantly so that the pundwits and the Repubs couldn’t re-write what happened to fit their narrative.

We engaged. During the 2000 election we didn’t do that, and the likes of Karen Hughes and Ari Fleischer got to determine what people thought.

Twitter will do a lot of that in 2012, but I still think the online polls are effective for the low information voter who is not tech savvy. They get reported in the papers the next day and get local coverage.

No matter what, let’s cover as many bases as possible.

i remember seeing mitbot’s european vacation from hell, and thinking that’s about as a bad as i’ve seen a presidential nominee act on a campaign. these last two weeks are even ten times worse!! i can’t remember seeing a campaign implode so fast and so spectacularly. and this is with 24/7 spinning by all the big media outlets trying to support the mittbot too!

i think we’re going to see president obama shift his message now to the worse-than-do-nothing congress, and make clear how obstructionist they’ve been (since the media is covering for them too and a very small percentage of the public knows about it). he can then make the rest of the campaign about getting him a congress that will actually work first of all, and second work to pass meaningful legislation that helps people, you know like the founding fathers intended.

The debacle with the veterans job bill should be played up,big time.

1B over four years, totally paid for. Four Repubs helped write the bill and then voted against it (Rachel had a good segment on this tonight).

McCain and Graham braying about defense contractors and voting against employing veterans?

“IN THAT ROOM”…….. The light was finally shown on the dark deep secrets of hate that was exposed for all to see. Even those who are still blinded by the fact their hate is so deep rooted and envious they have the audacity to call themselves Christians. Their god is their money and Scripturre tells us that “A fool and his money will soon part”.

“IN THAT ROOM”……Someone recorded similar dialogues that have been going on behind the closed doors in Board Rooms, golf courses, in the back of private restaurants, saunas and steam rooms for decades. Plotting and scheming evil ways on how to keep their money, make more money, make more wars to kill our sons and daughters with their while they hide their privileged children in private schools and colleges, even sending them to Canada when it was necessary.

“IN THAT ROOM”……They ate the best food, drank the finest wines without a care in the world that a hard working family went to bed worried about losing their home, a mother with a sick child worrying about medical bills, a student praying the application for her student loan goes through, a Senior citizen can’t sleep because she worries about her Medicare, Social Secuirty.

“IN THAT ROOM”……They did not care about the hard working middle class whose taxes were so high they had to take on two jobs to make ends meet. The poor who were grateful for the minimal food stamps they received and proud of themselves they managed to stretch them until the next month. They only cared about themselves in that room……

“IN THAT ROOM”…….They walked away feeling richer than rich, looking finer than fine, probably thinking they had it made in the shade.
But their poor pitiful hearts, soulless souls, empty spirits left with them, void less of the love their money god will never be able to fulfill….

        Thank you, PJ.
Scripture says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts. (Zechariah 4:6)
I have noticed our President quotes Scripture in the beginning, middle and end in his most poignant speeches.

I remember posting early on this election will be different and will be won much differently.
We the People, truly have awaken and now have ears to hear what is being said.
That being said, all the money, lies, power will not move those who are truly listening.
        Only the TRUTH……
Scripture also says, “Those who have ears to hear, let them listen”.
It is a sad thing when the truth falls on deaf ears. Even worse when the heart is so harden, the truth will never be able penetrate due to so mamy years of built up hate.

Good night, alll. Thank you Chips for all you do here.
    Sweet Sleep.

  41. September 20, 2012 at 3:02 am

Good morning Chips and all TOD friends,

Late Monday evening I posted a comment that noted that we’ve reached a moment worthy of folk taking a step back, out of the trees, be they the right height or not :), and recognize that we are all looking at a forest we’ve never seen in the history of US elections.

    That comment included:

“What we are experiencing really only began to emerge in late 2010 and early 2011 in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, in particular.
We are experiencing the first ever coalescence of the Internet, ubiquitous wireless access via cheap digital communication devices (phones, etc), rapid upload of immediately accessible multi-media, aggregation sites like TOD and many others, coupled with a profound array of social networking tools (blogs, FB and, in particular, TWITTER). Said another way, the game changer is the coalescence of all those network and access technology components coupled with the emergence of TWITTER.
Most of the folk running for election, managing campaigns, paying mega$$$ to influence campaigns, the bulk of commercial media, and even most of the moment to moment, twitch-enabled participants do not realize the unprecedented shift that is happening, real time, RIGHT NOW.
It’s hardly the time to educate the enemy, and you betcha those #NEOCONSTER John Birch Party misogynistic bigots are the ENEMY of our Republic, but it is important for folk on our Team to realize the enormous, unprecedented power available to EVERY CITIZEN.
It is that democratizing power, that freedom to connect, defend and extend the promise of America that we all must realize we actually possess and we must utilize it maximally in the next 49 days.
Mitt, Reince, Rove, Ryan, the Kochs, Leber and on and on, including all the #NEWSTAINERS truly didn’t know what hit them a few hours ago.
DavidCorn knew exactly what to do. He prepared the first installment and the moment it was accessible on the Mother Jones web server, he TWEETED.
    KA. BOOM.
And, within less than 2 hours, #BainMitt was not only not smirking he was a disheveled, crumpled mess of person so totally compromised by his entitled, gilded bubble of a life, he unwittingly confirmed he despises nearly half of the American electorate because he’d been exposed and didn’t have the intellectual, emotional or moral capacity to do the only thing that a person with an ounce of remaining dignity would have done – APOLOGIZE & WITHDRAW.
At any other time in the history of US politics he would have had a day to days to forever (because his debased behavior would have never been recorded) to spin, buff, deny or not even have to worry about anyone knowing, respectively.
In summary, let us realize our very real power.
Let us push every bit of nonsense spewed by #NEWSTAINERS right back at them without EVER allowing them any sense that they have influence.
Let us hose #SmirknMitt & #LyinRyan incessantly with the TRUTH.
Let us find every person we can who has not register and get them to do so, irrespective of whom they are going to vote, because if we are legitimate participants in our American democracy what must matter to us is that ALL eligible voters, VOTE.
You can all be assured, if we fail to prevail on 6 Nov, you will awaken on 7 Nov and thereafter live in a geographic region that may be called the USA, but will not resemble anything you have known before though GWB & Cheney gave you a trailer preview.”

Well, you have all witnessed the past 48+ hours, and what you have primarily witnessed is just how powerful YOU ARE, how powerful TWITTER is, and how powerful THE TRUTH always IS.

In that 48h, #47Percent has entered the consciousness of almost all, if not every, American (and millions of folk, globally).

In that 48h, you’ve seen every corporate #NEWSTAINER attempt to defy the laws of physics to spin #BainMitt’s ‘off the cuff’ seething disregard for way more than the #47Percent, because as you reflect on all his comments during that shindig, he actually trashed most of humanity.

In that 48h, you’ve also witnessed how quickly Issa was exposed for his witch hunt against AG Holder, McConnell, McCain et al were pilloried for their continued obstruction of jobs, made even more despicable because the legislative intent was to provide jobs to Veterans, and …. actually a rather long list.

    So, a simple recommendation.

During the next 48 days, if you spend any time listening to a pundit, #NEWSTAINER, opposition candidate, whatever, do so with one intent – you’re going to pummel them with the TRUTH.

Otherwise, save the energy and channel it to phone banking, registering voters, driving folk to a voting place wherever early voting is available or provide them transportation and any other assistance they need on 6 Nov, etc.

Do not allow polls or any of those paid to distract, disrupt you in any way.

The only poll that matters is the tally of VOTES.

To anyone who attempts to distract, dish the TRUTH.

    #FORWARD

    good evening/morning/afternoon tods

darrell issa, congressthug from socal, hounded, insulted, vilified, and smeared attorney general eric holder, who has been completely exonerated but only after he suffered an ugly public drubbing.

darrell issa is one of the wealthiest members of congress, with a personal fortune of over 450 million dollars, but who has nevertheless been repeatedly challenged for his inappropriate use of his office for financial gain.

after 9/11, ‘ He was criticized for making comments that the federal government “‘just threw’ buckets of cash at New York for an attack ‘that had no dirty bomb in it, it had no chemical munitions in it'” and asking “why the firefighters who went there and everybody in the city of New York needs to come to the federal government for the dollars versus this being primarily a state consideration.” ‘ (wikipedia)

here’s the good news: darrell issa is running for re-election this year–an election he can lose. the democratic contender is jerry tetalman, who issa has disdained to debate or even campaign against. here’s a link to jerry tetalman’s website:

    http://jerryforcongress2012.com/site/

issa has made a name for himself, but it’s not a pretty one. i like the sound of jerry tetalman for congress!

‘a conservative history of the united states’ is actually a knee-slapper list of rethug stupidity. here’s a taste:

‘ 1500s: The American Revolutionary War begins: “The reason we fought the revolution in the sixteenth century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown.”—Rick Perry

1607: First welfare state collapses: “Jamestown colony, when it was first founded as a socialist venture, dang near failed with everybody dead and dying in the snow.”—Dick Armey

1619-1808: Africans set sail for America in search of freedom: “Other than Native Americans, who were here, all of us have the same story.”—Michele Bachmann ‘
