Additional tidbit (forgive my repetitiveness, as I said this twice in the thread below): Per Mitt Romney’s mom, his own dad received “welfare relief” when that family immigrated from Mexico (where they had fled the US’ anti-bigamy laws). It says so much about Mitt Romney that being born with a silver spoon that his dad clearly didn’t have, he’d deride people for taking government benefits. His is the hideous face of unearned and unacknowledged privilege, and the lack of empathy which that engenders.

Shit has hit the fan for Romney on twitter. Journalists and news outlets are now tweeting about the story and linking to it. The story is receiving huge traffic and buzz.

David Corn deserves a Pulitzer for the fantastic work he’s been doing exposing the real Romney.

    • September 17, 2012 at 6:04 pm

You are correct that David Corn deserves an award, but why no coverage of this on tv? Are they trying to authenticate the videos? This needs to be played in loops like they did Rev Wright although this is straight out of #MythRomney’s mouth so it is much more devastating for Romney or it should be.

      Just unbelievable.

    • September 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm

I think it is different for Romney because his unfavorable rating is going up and his likeability is going down each day. This was not only one video, but a series of things MItt said while with the 1%. He cracked a latino joke and said that if “both of his parents were Mexican,” he would be having an “easier” time. He said many things taped that should sink the rest of his sinking ship.

      September 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Nate’s game is numbers, not psychoanalysis – he has little to no authority in that regard and since he got his current gig, even his numbers have been askew far too often

He needs to stick to what he does best and back away from the line

        September 17, 2012 at 8:01 pm

This is the key. Nate is probably right about the 90% figure, but it is the 10% that counts. PBO supposedly committed a gaffe with the “guns and religion” line, although ultimately people figured that he was actually emphasizing with people who were having a hard time with their lives and people came to realize that.
This, however, is classic Romney and displays exactly how he feels about people. Plus, it isn’t really a gaffe, it is truly hi

don’t ya’ll think it’s funny how these videos just popped up on the net? Look at it from a racist republican’s point of view. When they listen to this garbage it will win them a LOT more votes from Conservatives who were on the fence in regards to Romney.

What is these videos have been planted by Gop PLANT wanting to stir things up and get under OUR skin.If WE claim racism (which it is) ,the media will run to cover for Romney even more just like they’ve been covering all the dog whistling that has been going on for close to 4 years now and the GOP will rally around their Golden Boy

We need to thread carefully.I just think this is very fishy, way too convenient at just 50 days from the Elections for Romney to be yapping like that so openly about so much. There is something weird that I can’t explain but I’m getting a vibe from this

Only thing I could tell the President to run with is the 47% line that Romney yapped about.Romney did say he didn’t care about the other 47% but Potus should say he cares about ALL Americans

see you later again.Got to finish work

Formerly Fred I actually wrote a comment very similar to yours but decided not to post it, because I wanted to first see how the RW sites are responding first.

My initial reaction was skepticism and that this was a Romney campaign antic to shore up his Rabid RW base, and to pull in some naive, but confused “Independent” voters who do not want to associate with being called “Moochers” Romney’s words seem scripted and the peephole from which the camera lenses are peeking seem a bit too perfectly honed in on Romney’s face for it to have been accidental.

We will see. This may be a media tactic to generate ratings and controversy. The MSM doesn’t really care who wins this election, so they will play the voters like fiddles if they can get away with it.

      • September 17, 2012 at 6:17 pm

While I agree that the GOP is not beyond mindfucking, David Corn is an actual journalist. I trust that he wouldn’t get fooled by GOP psyops.

        • 51 hopefruit2
          September 17, 2012 at 6:22 pm

True, and the Obama camp seems to be going along with it. It’s possible that they both know that this was leaked by the Romney camp in an attempt to shore up his rabid RW base, and have found a clever way to respond so as to make it backfire on Romney.

          • September 17, 2012 at 6:27 pm

IF this was put out by Boston, it has failed even more spectacularly than the Libya remarks. I’ve been saying for a while that the GOP is on the precipice of being irrelevant. I just thought they’d put up a better fight.

        • September 17, 2012 at 6:22 pm

Agree, LL. They’ve had almost a month to review the tape, interact with the source, etc. And, he’s rolling it out in doses, which is not an accident by any means. He’s going for maximum impact and we already know the contents of other parts of the video and they are very damning of #BainMitt. No way Romney would have ever wanted a comprehensive video of his real sentiments published at this time.

          • September 17, 2012 at 6:26 pm

Precisely. As Hopefruit2 indicates, this MAY have been an attempt for Mittens to play to the base again. But, as with the the Libya comments, he miscalculated. Either that, or there is a mole in Boston who wants to take his boss down. Either way, it doesn’t play well with the moderates, who have now been told that they’re dupes for voting for Obama.

          • September 17, 2012 at 6:28 pm

Exactly Bobfr. Mitt would not want voters to see him bragging about using child labor in China aka shipping American jobs to China as PBO has been saying. This is damning in my opinion. Workers in Ohio, Michigan, PA and elsewhere will not give him a pat on the back for admitting on tape and bragging that he sent jobs overseas to use child labor.

    • September 17, 2012 at 6:24 pm

I suspect the videos will harden already existing presumptions.

    • September 17, 2012 at 6:25 pm

This video did not just “pop” up though. It has been on YouTube since May, so I don’t see how it is some kind of conspiracy. Sometimes YouTube videos take a while to take notice. I first posted the portion from when he was bragging about child labor in China on Friday. David Corn has investigated the legitimacy of this, and posted the more lengthy video. Either way Romney needs more than his base to win. This garbage will only resonate with his base. They used Rev. Wright against PBO, but these are Mitt Romney’s words not anybody elses. I see your point, but this should not get a pass. He needs to answer to this.

      • September 17, 2012 at 6:39 pm

        Agree fully, Obamacrat.

And, you are correct about the fact that segments of the video have been on YouTube for a while.

As noted on the previous thread, UT & Chips originally brought all our attention on 24 August 2012 to one of the segments of this video that was posted to YouTube under the name ‘Rachel Maddow’:

It achieved >70K views before MSNBC succeeded in having the account removed. Since then various other segments have been posted under names like ‘Anne Onymous’ 🙂

One of the final comments that ‘Rachel Maddow’ posted before the account was closed included a statement that a longer version of the video existed and that “MSN” were being contacted to discuss full disclosure of the video and that the contents were going to be very revealing about #BainMitt.

Mitt Romney’s criticism of President Obama’s handling of the attacks on American outposts in the Middle East does not appear to have resonated with voters, according to a new survey released Monday.

While 26 percent of Americans approved of Romney’s comments critical of the president’s response to the attacks, which left four American foreign service officers dead, 48 percent of those surveyed disapproved and an additional 26 percent did not voice an opinion, according to a poll from the Pew Research Center.

Meanwhile, 45 percent of those polled said they approved of the president’s handling of the situation, versus 36 percent who disapproved.

Romney Stands By Claim That 47% Of Americans Are ‘Dependent’ On Government | Responding to an undercover video showing Mitt Romney claiming that President Obama’s voters — 47% of Americans — are “dependent upon government” and “believe they are victims,” the GOP presidential candidate’s campaign stood by the former governor’s claim. “As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work,” Romney spokesperson Gail Gitcho said in a statement. RNC Chairman Reince Preibus agreed, telling CNN, “No, I don’t think the candidate’s off message at all.”

The neanderthals in the Republican party may appreciate someone who never apologizes, but those of us living int he real world detest people like that. After watching the video clips, I have a strong suspicion that the person who gave them to David Cohn is working for Romney. I think this is another way the campaign is trying to energize the conservative base to turn out in large numbers. Except may be for us who are strong supporters of the President, I doubt that they will turn-off many of the so called undecided voters. The only good that I can see that may come from them is to increase the demand for Romney to release more tax returns to prove that he pays taxes; especially now that he has put out a claim that 47% of Americans don’t pay taxes–which is an absurd lie.

    • 121 hopefruit2
      September 17, 2012 at 7:36 pm

I had a similar thought nathkatun7. There is someone by the username of “anneonymous670” who released the tape (before David Corn) on DKOS. That person also wrote a series of dairies with videotapes showing Romney saying or doing various things on videotape of 9 diaries on the same date (Sept 10) within a 20-minute time span. The person was troll rated and auto-banned by DKos users. All the topics of those tapes seem to center around race and class lines.

I wasn’t all that satisfied with the segment on Tweety either. It seemed to be yet another dull rehashing of similar race/class discussions where this election is concerned. I’m skeptical, but I will continue to keep an open mind about this.

from the financial times (should be myth’s peeps)”

‘ Mitt Romney’s efforts to turn round his campaign were thrown off course after video clips emerged in which the Republican presidential nominee said Barack Obama could count on the support of 47 per cent of Americans who are “dependent on government”, do not pay tax and “believe that they are victims”. ‘
‘ The former private sector chief executive, whose message was that he was a problem-solver who could turn around the economy, now stands accused by some in his own party of running a disorganised campaign.

“The very simple truth is that Mitt Romney has failed to close any deal with the voters and his message is so muddled no voter really knows what they are getting,” said Erick Erickson, an influential conservative blogger. ‘

I understand what Fred has said, and will say it occurred to me as well, part way through the viewing. But. As much as it would have been very difficult to tape only Myth’s ugly head through a tiny hole in a barrier, it could be possible someone on wait staff took a chance. Sure as heck his ugliness was portrayed in all its reality, and certainly his crowd was not very fired up; I could almost feel a sense of, ‘is this guy for real?’, maybe even some thinking ‘holy hell will break loose if any of this gets out those people in the ‘public’. There would seem to be no logic at all to have orchestrated this kind of truly despicable ugliness towards one’s fellow man and countrymen/women, just to let it seem as if it was leaked.

I agree. Also this Jim Van de Hyde(sp) character is saying that we don’t know how PBO will govern either. The problem with that statement is, we already know, because PBO has been in office for 4 yrs. He is spinning for Robney also.

      September 17, 2012 at 7:46 pm

I totally agree with you donna! Any attempt to equate the two statements is pure deception. President Obama’s statement was empathetic trying to explain why people who have not seen their economic lives improve were skeptical of any change promised by politicians. Romney’s statement was dismissive, and it denigrated the 47% of the people who support President Obama. I support President Obama. I’ve been lucky to have worked for 48 years, including the time I was in school. I’ve paid taxes for all those years. And now Romney tells me that I support President Obama because I am dependent on government hand outs and don’t pay taxes. If Romney has been paying taxes why doesn’t he show us his tax returns and prove that Sen. Harry Reid lied when he said a credible person told him that Romney had paid no taxes for almost a decade.

That video will not ginny up the base. I think there is a growing list of repubs that will be sitting out this election and if this keeps going, they won’t just sit it out, they’ll actually end up voting for PBO. Of course, no complacency here,, OFA and supporters have their foot truly on the pedal to give PBO the support he needs from a Dem House & Senate.

Romney campaign response, not claiming the video is a fake, but this:

“Mitt Romney wants to help all Americans struggling in the Obama economy. As the governor has made clear all year, he is concerned about the growing number of people who are dependent on the federal government, including the record number of people who are on food stamps, nearly one in six Americans in poverty, and the 23 million Americans who are struggling to find work. Mitt Romney’s plan creates 12 million new jobs in four years, grows the economy and moves Americans off of government dependency and into jobs.”

Mitt’s central argument is that he can write off 47% because they’re moochers. He just needs to win 6% that comprise indepdents. We’re supposed to assume that he already has the Republican base in his pocket. Why are we to assume that? The polls show that Mitt has been losing ground since he had his convention.

GOP strategists are gettin’ their spin on behalf of Mitt:

Top GOP strategist on Romney tape: “He actually sounds refreshingly direct and candid, which some people will really like.”
