Gainesville.com: First lady Michelle Obama practically scolded students Monday at the University of Florida, telling them she wouldn’t take any excuses about failing to vote.

“Pretend I’m not the first lady. I’m like your mother,” she said.

Declaring it her “biggest event to date,” the first lady spoke before a crowd of about 10,750 at UF’s O’Connell Center. In making the case for President Barack Obama’s re-election, she recounted both her own history with him and his White House record.

…. Before speaking at UF, Obama danced and sang with girls at a Gainesville after-school program. She met with about 40 elementary school-aged girls at Girls Place Inc. off Northwest 39th Avenue, which provides programs for economically disadvantaged girls.

“You know I’m all about girl power,” Obama said.

The first lady danced and sang the educational song “Tooty Ta” by Jack Hartmann with one group of girls…..

“You will remember this day for the rest of your lives,” Girls Place Executive Director Renae Clements said to the girls.

Ok, have to give my 2 cents.

For those who think we’re getting punked by the Romney campaign — that this video isn’t so “secret” and was released to gin up the base — chill. Even IF this video came from campaign operatives, rallying the dead enders will NOT help. What the video shows is someone who is divorced from any feeling for his fellow citizens. IF it was an attempt at psyops, it has failed spectacularly.

But, I don’t think it was leaked by the campaign. They’re just not that smart in Boston. The HQ is suffused with an air of entitlement, and it flows from the top.

Chips, time to put up THAT picture of PBO. You know the one I’m talking about.

How Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Helped Leak the Secret Romney Fund-raiser Video

The damning video of Mitt Romney telling a room of wealthy donors how he really feels about the free-loading 47 percent of Americans “who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it,” among other candid things, has been floating around online in bits and pieces for three months, but didn’t hit the big time until it was published by David Corn at Mother Jones today. Credited as a “research assistant” on the story is James Carter IV, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, who has been toiling online as an opposition researcher and is “currently looking for work,” according to his Twitter bio. “I’ve been searching for clips on Republicans for a long time, almost every day,” said Carter this evening. “I just do it for fun.” But by connecting Corn with the mysterious uploader of the clip, Carter has uncovered his biggest story yet, one that could potentially affect the outcome of the election. (And get him a job.)
Carter told Daily Intel that he first noticed a portion of the video in which Romney discusses using Chinese labor while working at Bain Capital. That clip, uploaded by a YouTube user named “Rachel Maddow” in late May, has since been deleted, but eventually made it to Buzzfeed and Daily Kos.

Additional pieces of the tape were then added to a YouTube account called “Anne Onymous” starting three weeks ago. “There was a minor uproar about it on Twitter when I found [the first clip], so I kept doing research on it and that eventually led me to be able narrow down who it originated from,” said Carter. Via Twitter, he contacted the person who claimed to have secretly taped and uploaded the video, and then sought to help publicize the remarks. “That seemed to be the purpose of [the filming] — to get it to a larger audience,” Carter said.

    • September 17, 2012 at 8:19 pm

The only way that I would have been suspicious is if he had made the comment about Obama supporters and that was it. I could see how that could play into getting his base, although it still would signal desperation as he should have been gotten his base support tied up. There is no way that he would want the part bragging about using child labor in China for Bain Capital to come out. This plays directly into the Obama campaign’s hands. A Bloomberg article is now up declaring “this is the day Romney lost the election.” We cannot get complacent. We still have to vote and GOTV plain and simple, but this is not good for Romney. This solidifies our base and gets us more independents more than it helps Romney in my opinion.

        September 17, 2012 at 8:43 pm

I am confused. Just who is Romney’s base? I keep hearing how this might have been released purposefully to rile up the base, solidify the base or the independents …. is his base just those who make $250,000+ and don’t want taxes raised? Is his base the 1% like he is, silver spoon and all? Is his base (this is who I saw at there pitiful convention) the white, pasty faced middle class Americans who is ignorant, totally toting the water for the GOP, voted Republican all their lives, the men who would “put women in their place” and the women who enable them, the beneficiaries of Medicare who have not a clue as to what their health insurance will be like if Romney is elected, the crusty old goats who could care less about education or the arts, or a railway system in this country that works, or wind power … or, enough of my rant? Who is his base? Who would these horrible, unfeeling things he said be directed at? Please help me with this!

If it’s the same tape, I heard about it last month on the “orange” place. A reporter who was invited by one of the attendees. They (Team Robme) KNEW she was a reporter but probably did not know she was taping it…..if fact I am sure of it. This is just like the GOP, they just don’t think. Just like when they allowed the cameras to tape President Obama when they invited him to their retreat…..GOLD!

The folks he’s trying to appeal to are the right wing nuts who don’t even like him. they will just stay home if he doesn’t keep feeding them the red meat. His base is also the 1%, but they really don’t care. They make tons of money, no matter who’s in office.

    • September 17, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Exactly. Karl Rove is not Machiavelli, no matter what he thinks of himself; and no one in the Romney camp can even aspire to the level of a Karl Rove.

Three days after POTUS’s first (domestic policy) debate.

“Bill O’Reilly just announced he’ll be doing a 90 min debate with Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart. Oct. 6. Streamed online.”

Also, MSM is actively involved in deceiving voters about the debates. I have not heard a single talking head make any claim other than “Romney is a good debater.”

Oh yeah, here’s what happened during the GOP debates (just off the top of my head, not a complete list):

    > For Pete’s Sake, I’m running for President
    > Self-deport
    > I’ll bet you $10,000
    > I’m severely conservative
    > Let me speak

Sen Obama had Biden, Dodd, Edwards, Clinton, Richardson, etc. Then pres Obama had all GOPer Congress at their retreat in Jan 2010.

    To Nath & hopefruit:

GOP strategists are gettin’ their spin on for Mitt:

“Rove on leaked Romney tape: “sounded to me like deliberate:”

Top GOP strategist on Romney tape: “He actually sounds refreshingly direct and candid, which some people will really like.”

To which, Blake Hounsell, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, responded: “You are getting spun.”

    • September 17, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Isn’t John Harwood generally smart? I can’t keep track of pundiots any more. But yeah, even the spin is half-hearted at best. Calling 47% of the populace moochers is NOT good. And then, there’s that little bit about the company in China.

Callous, cynical, detached, sociopathic ‘observations’ offered up in the most clinically superficial and offhanded manner, in response to something so significant and so offensive that at once exposes and sums up Mitt Romney, his views, lack of humanity, and what generally guides his greed and …

That my friends, is the general mindset and attitude that will drown out if we let them, all that is best about us as embodied by President Obama…

His spirit of humanity, goodness, empathy, progress, excellence and success but not at the expense of others especially the disadvantaged, must prevail…

We cannot and must not let Mitt Romney, his cohorts and their collective deranged and perverted minds pollute, take hold of and systematically destroy all that’s best about us…

Harwood is simply reporting the response from the Romney camp. Doesn’t mean he believes it. Not the same as when a pundit uses a GOP talking point to question a democrat. Not the same as when a pundit repeats a GOP talking point as if he ACCEPTS it as truth.

Hey Arapho, I posted a comment about my suspicions on the previous thread but then had to go out to a condo meeting. I haven’t read hopefruit’s comment. I just read what LL wrote and he is probably right but I still don’t trust the Rove enterprise. I remember what they did to Dan Rather in 2004. The tweets you posted seem to back up my suspicions. After viewing the two video clips that Chips posted on the previous thread, I felt that Romney was hitting the exact points I’ve heard many right wingers make over and over again. My point was that Romney said everything that people who previously suspected him of being a moderate will eat up and be energized that he is truly one of them. He also said it in such away that undecided voters, who may be leaning Republican, would not find to be that offensive. Again, this purely speculation on my part. I hope people who think that these video clips will be a game changer are right. That’s also what I am rooting for.

Vice President Joe Biden laid out in 28 minutes his version of the Republican platform and how it contrasts with what the Democratic presidential campaign is proposing.

“We can boo all we want for their not-so-great idea, but if we don’t get out and vote, we’ve got a problem,” Biden said in his speech from the Port of Burlington Monday afternoon.

Biden reminded nearly 600 southeast Iowans present that early voting starts in 10 days, and they should get engaged now, if they’re not already.

Biden focused on health care for seniors, international trade and, of course, the federal support for the American automobile industry. He contrasted President Barack Obama’s positions on those issues with those of his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney

Now that Mitt Romney has denigrated the so called 47% of Americans who don’t pay taxes and are, therefore, irresponsible people who are depend on government hand-outs, It’s time for Romney to release his tax returns and show the American voters how responsible he is.

While I’m here, I thought I’d react to some stories told about phonebanking recently, about how people started conversations seeming to be against Pres. Obama, but by the end had turned around. I have really found that if you just LISTEN, say something about how you understand what they’re saying, etc, that it’s not unusual for that person to end up on your side.

I was canvassing in Loudon County, VA last weekend. One gentleman started out saying he was angry with Obama about deportations (the man is from Peru), said he volunteered in 2008 but didn’t feel good about him this year, and so we talked and after a few minutes, he was basically saying, yeah we have to win this thing.

Another nice story (not about the listening thing but nice) – 2 days ago, again in Loudon county, I knocked on a door and the woman who answered said she and her husband are big supporters. She’s from Guatemala, her husband from Bolivia. I asked her to spread the word among her friends and she said, we’re all for him, we know he’s for us. I said I know he wants to pass good immigration reform but the Republican Congress makes it impossible. Her response: “We understand.” I thought that was so cool – she said it so sweetly.

‘ In what his campaign described today as a bold strategy to insure victory in the Presidential contest, Republican nominee Mitt Romney will undergo a procedure to have his mouth wired shut until Tuesday, November 6th.

The decision reportedly was made in response to the release earlier in the day of rare video footage showing Mr. Romney saying what he really thinks. ‘

It’s really simple! Over there, in Afghanistan, the Taliban Kidnap Police officers, local Governors, And other Leaders. They only release them, if they pledge to help the Taliban.
They threaten their Families, and give ultimatums.
So, Rachel, getting into a fortified area in Afghanistan us not as difficult as you think, if you consider some Proson gurad has turned, etc., as a result of the aforementioned.
Maybe, Rachel should stop being so gosh fn Ron Paul, on Foreign policy matters. It’s a little more complicated than that.
    That is all!

Mitt Romney is the village idiot. He called a presser and said his words were not “elegantly stated” and then said this:

WTF? He doesn’t even get that what he said was disgusting.
