Coming Up: President Obama in West Palm Beach (4:50 ET)

Melbourne, Florida, Sept 9

4:50: President Obama delivers remarks at a campaign event at West Palm Beach County Convention Center

C-Span * CNN * CBS 1 * CBS 2

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother!

President Barack Obama holds on as he is hugged and picked up by Scott Van Duzer at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta Italian Restaurant in Fort Pierce, Florida, September 9

USA Today: President Obama gets his share of effusive supporters. But in what is likely a first for the 44th president, he got a bear hug.

… he stopped by the Big Apple Pizza & Pasta Restaurant in Fort Pierce and met with the owner Scott Van Duzer.

“Scott, what’s going on man,” Obama shouted to Van Duzer as he came through the door. “Scott, let me tell you, you are like the biggest pizza shop owner I’ve ever seen.”

The president then approached Van Duzer, 46, of Port St. Lucie, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 260 pounds. “Everybody look at these guns,” Obama said, pointing to Van Duzer’s muscles. “If I eat your pizza will I look like that?”

The two men laughed. They embraced, and Van Duzer lifted Obama about foot off the ground. “Look at that!” Obama exclaimed once back on firm ground. “Man are you a power-lifter or what?”

Obama said he decided to stop by Van Duzen’s restaurant because he had done some record-breaking work promoting blood donations in his community. He’s received commendations from the White House and U.S. Surgeon General.

“I still wonder how he got these biceps, but what we know is that the guy’s just got a big heart along with big pecs,” Obama said. “So we’re very proud of him and we just want to say thank you for all the great work.”

Politico: …. Van Duzer, who said he played basketball, football and baseball in high school, said he is a registered Republican, yet voted for Obama in 2008 and plans to do so again in November.

“I don’t vote party line, I vote who I feel comfortable with, and I do feel extremely comfortable with him,” Van Duzer said.

Of the Secret Service agents possibly flipping out over Van Duzer lifting the president of the United States, he said: “He said I was all right as long as I didn’t take him away.”

As you wait, remember patience is supposed to be a virtue prize in and of itself because more than likely Chips Chica will forget (being 21 yrs and all). 😉 😉 Prizes usually are instant or they are not.

I love the pic and I laughed so hard when I read that Scott had asked ahead of time and Secret Service said as long he didn’t run off with him. You could tell Scott and PBO were very comfortable with each other.

That’s powerful. A Republican in the state of FLORIDA who openly declares having voted for PBO in 08 and promises to vote for him again in ’12. I think Charlie Crist’s endorsement of PBO has opened the floodgates of Republicans for Obama in the Sunshine State 🙂

Hi hopefruit2. Hope all is well with you. I think you are so correct about you comment concerning former Gov. Crist’s endorsement of POB. I think that the lady who introduced POB in Melbourne this morning stated that she is also a Republican who voted for POB in 2008 and will be voting for POB in Nov.

She also stated how much she love, respect POB, and that she will be talking with friends to come out and vote for POB in Nov. Spread the word. One on One is always a great start. Keep moving FORWARD. It happened to me in a store last week. Keep the conversations going.HZ

I click on a WaPo article and I see this:

Barack Obama Twitter Mentions this past week – 661,507
Mitt Romney Twitter Mentions this past week – 788,936

If you believe those figures, I have a bridge under the San Francisco bridge to sell you. Once again it appears that Romney paid WaPo to fudge his Twitter mention numbers. There is NO WAY IN HELL that Romney got more mentions on Twitter than Barack Obama during the week of the DNC convention. No.Phucking.Way.

    • September 9, 2012 at 4:07 pm

I think mentions are one thing and RTs are another. But yeah, I hear you!

    • 28 Melanie
      September 9, 2012 at 4:10 pm

It absolutely is possible. Do you know how much time people spend on twitter making fun of Mitt and tearing down his arguments. I know that I’ve contributed thousands of tweets alone making fun of Money Boo Boo:)) Remember it does not break down the mentions into positive versus negative; just mentions.

    • 32 hopefruit2
      September 9, 2012 at 4:18 pm

You all are probably right. That’s the only way he could have more mentions – if most of them are NEGATIVE. Like the pit bull from Alaska.

    • 33 desertflower
      September 9, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Those numbers COULD be right:) That would be 788,936 WTF is WRONG with him!

    • 34 57andfemale
      September 9, 2012 at 4:56 pm

‘mentions’ do not equal support I ‘mention’ Mittens all the time. But what do I say about him?

    • 35 lamh35
      September 9, 2012 at 6:18 pm

all the mentions of Romney may not be in a good way. David Gregory is trending on twitter today and yesterday, but NOT for good reasons.

    • 36 nospin
      September 9, 2012 at 7:06 pm

those numbers are about right. Lots of folks, myself included are determined to ask Willard multiple times daily to release his tax returns or call him out on some BS statement. So the twitter mentions are most likely 70% or negative.

The looks on the people’s faces are priceless. The one lady who is sitting down looks like a customer and then there is a guy standing up with what looks like a press pass. And POTUS is just so relaxed as he’s being hoisted into the air. Trying to think what is funnier; this pix or the pix of the senior ladies in Chinatown palming his buns!!

Bobfr, please work your magic. This tweet is the real answer to the question for the August job numbers..

GW Bush August jobs record from 2001-2008: (-5,000 jobs). President Obama jobs record for August 2012: (+96,000 jobs). pic.twitter.com/ocqmeh2v

I don’t know how to copy the tweet but can you pull it, post it, and send it out to all the people you have to constantly teach to do their jobs.

Chips can you make this tweet front and center on the blog..

I am laughing at the GOP saying that the debates will be good for Romney. Sure. Going up in a debate against the President of the Harvard Law Review is as good an idea as Paul Ryan challenging Michael Phelps to a race in the pool.

(Not my original joke. It was first made when the House GOP invited PBO to a Town Hall with them. Fox was so depressed by POTUS’ performance they didn’t even show the entire event.)

    • 61 FiredUpInCA
      September 9, 2012 at 4:23 pm

To borrow from Michelle Obama: The debates won’t change Mitt Romney. They will reveal him.

        September 9, 2012 at 6:32 pm

Amen FiredUpInCA. These people have to encourage themselves someway. So they are talking about how great Romney will be in the debates. We shall see won’t we.

      • September 9, 2012 at 9:28 pm

Hope you don’t mind FiredUpinCA; I made a tweet of this one. It is SO good!

I phonebanked today and Wow, what a difference this week! We called Colorado again and I was dreading the negativity I’d hear (going by last time), but it was all positive! I talked to 2 young men that made me especially exicted. One of them was my son’s age; 21. He was leaning towards Obama, but when I talked to him about how he reformed the student loan system, he got excited. I talked about how the President and his wife had enormous student loan debt themselves; how they understood what it was like. When I told him about when paying back the loans, you only had to pay 10% of what your salary was, he got real excited. He said he didn’t know about that, and said he’d tell his girlfriend, who was also in college.

Another young man told me he was interested in healthcare and the environment. He didn’t know about Healthcare.gov. I got his e-mail address and wrote him an e-mail when I got home, giving him all the links. I also told him about this fantastic blog. I always tell people about The Obama Diary when they’re interested.

        I’m fired up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was surprised to hear on NPR this morning that Mitt Romney could have the debates in his favor due to his being in recent debates and his early practice. They said PBO hadn’t debated for quite awhile and he was procrastinating against debate prep also that he tends towards rambling answers. That surprised me due to my thinking NPR was one of the only noncorporate medias left.

      • 66 Sara
        September 9, 2012 at 4:56 pm

NPR had always been my go-to radio station but last Friday I heard a ‘fact-check’ segment that was baloney. I thought my ears must be deceiving me and was rather disheartened. The only ‘truth-warrior’ is dear Chips.

          September 10, 2012 at 6:01 am

NPR was corrupted during the Bush Administration. Frontline took some fact hits too. The Rethugs in power tried to bend it to the right.

        September 9, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Let’s keep raising those expectations for Mittens and lowering them for PBO. Go right ahead!

      • September 9, 2012 at 5:26 pm

He debates issues every day. He’s president for heaven’s sake. What are people thinking?

      • 70 Anna Luc
        September 9, 2012 at 6:15 pm

I believe Mara Liasson is the NPR White House correspondent and, like Juan Williams, is a conservative who regularly appears on Fox. She gives any analysis she is involved in a decidedly pro-republican twist. But the facts as stated are true. Romney has debated alot this year and POTUS has not debated in four years. I think POTUS will do just fine, but we need to lower our expectations. Effectively debating someone who will stand in your face and lie will not be easy.

      • 71 idon
        September 9, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Hmmm . . PBO is the chess master of politics and extremely competitive. If he wanted to get a psychological advantage over his opponent, he would invite press reports giving his opponent the advantage of preparation, even though it is very clear debates are mostly about stagecraft and a detailed analysis of your opponents tells. I think PBO gets a chuckle out of journalists who write his debate obituary without understanding the real goal of debate play. It sort of like playing the dozens and in that game, PBO will always win.

        • 72 Left-Indie
          September 9, 2012 at 8:25 pm

I heard the “fact check” guy on NPR. What an ass. Rachel is right about them. Romney though, is good at this debate thing in that he learned the art of non-answer answers. So i hope PBO never misses a chance to point out that he just evaded the last question. One thing true about PBO, he does go on. In the age of tweets, it behooves him to come up with tight, powerful retorts. And few humorous answers as well.

          • 73 idon
            September 9, 2012 at 9:04 pm

The problem for Romney is that no matter what he says, it will be different from the last thing he said, which is what he stands by no matter what it is he said. PBO doesn’t have to rebutt anything Romney says because Romney will do that for him.

    • September 9, 2012 at 4:49 pm

The Europe trip was supposed to be good for him. Then it was the convention, Ann humanizing him, now on to the debate. Oh, well.

Finished my calls for today. Two plus hours, 161 calls (to NC). Don’t actually reach a lot of people. Some choose to not share who they are voting for–had 6-8 of those; had 10 STRONG PO; 6-8 undecided; 2 lean Republican; 2 definite Romney and one (older) gentlemen: “Anyone but Obama.” Why? Obamacare…..”Will bankrupt the country blah blah blah.” He was grossly misinformed, but we had a nice conversation. I urged him (three times) to get the book Health Care Reform by Jonathan Gruber. I did explain some of his misconceptions, but finally had to end the call. Thanked him for taking the time to speak with him and encouraged him again to inform himself with correct information.

  23. September 9, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Overhearing callers, and we’re getting undecideds. How can you be undecided?!

    • September 9, 2012 at 4:51 pm

I still don’t get that Anne is supposed to be the closer for Mittiful. Every time that I’ve ever seen or heard her, she ends up swallowing he r well manicured feet. I’ve said all along that she is the one to keep under wraps, she is a loose canon. Every since she said Mitt’s dad was crazy, when in fact that same sentiment is what cost him his election, I knew she had open mouth disease. Today, she says that Mitt’s been demonized, that while they’ve never struggled financially, we should trust that they feel everyone’s struggle. So that whole bit about eating tuna and pasta on the ironing board was a lie? Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was a struggle for the maid to keep all those magic undies at the ready with all that tuna in the way.

i sure hope he’s right. in the article, the 3 reasons given are, one, robmey’s choice of rlyin, with the implications for medicare; two, akin’s statements about ‘legitimate’ rape, reminding us of the extremity of rw views; and three, the skinny-dippers in the sea of galilee.

i absolutely get the frist two, but it’s hard to believe rethugs would vote for a dem because of this incident, if they even remember it by now. hope it’s true! and i bet the dnc is reminding voters in their districts.

PORT ST. LUCIE — President Obama made a surprise visit to a sweltering storefront Obama For America office at the corner of Port St. Lucie Boulevard and Westmoreland Boulevard and placed thank-you calls to two campaign volunteers as 30 or so campaign workers looked on.

Arriving a little after 3:30 p.m. on his way to the Palm Beach County Convention Center, the president brought some pizzas, apparently from his earlier stop at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce.

Obama was handed a cell phone to place a call to campaign volunteer Barney Roberts of Jacksonville who, Obama said, also served in the armed forces for 12 years.

Barney’s phone blocked the call from the phone Obama was given, so the president was handed another phone and this time got a message machine.

“Hey Barney, this is Barack Obama. We’re in the campaign office and everybody’s saying what a great neighborhood team leader you are. We just want to say thank you for everything you do. I’m going to try you at the other number,” the president said.

“This is not as easy as it looks,” Obama said before dialing another number and reaching Barney.

“Is this Barney? Barney, this is Barack Obama…..We’re over at the campaign office and folks are telling me what unbelievable work you’re doing as a neighborhood team leader and I’m just calling to say not only do I appreciate your service in our armed forces but I really appreciate all the hop you’re giving me.”

    There was a brief pause.

“You don’t believe me, do you?” Obama said.

“He’s being quiet,” Obama said to the people in the room. Then, to Barney, he said: “No, it’s true, it’s me. Anyway, I wanted you to know what you’re doing every day, that’s making all the difference in the campaign, so keep it up. Everybody up in Washington, Michelle and all the girls, they say thank you too.”

miss ann had to be there, to represent the ‘struggle’ in myth’s life. what they may not realize is that we see miss ann, who raised 5 kids without help, who had miscarriages, who had cancer and m.s.; then we see myth, who had money, some more money, and some friends with money.

her misery doesn’t humanize him; it reminds us that in myth’s world, the women suffer while the men get rich. he actually smiled during the interview while miss ann was talking about her health issues. no skin off his nose!

      • 223 57andfemale
        September 9, 2012 at 7:16 pm

It didn’t get the attention it deserved, but when Queen Ann spoke about her miscarriage, she said she laid in bed for hours while she was losing her baby so as not to disturb Mitt. In the morning he dropped her off at the hospital and went to work. he didn’t know his youngest son was traumatized by the event. that is not family values — that is chilling.

I have a bad asthma attack and I wake my husband up. And we have to stress whether one or both of us has to miss a day’s work because of it. I make strong coffee, puff on my inhaler. My husband rubs my back to alleve my stress, to make it better. If I end up in the ER, I have to pay the bill because I’m self-employed with a preexisting condition and uninsurable.

It’s actually okay to not have to live through what millions of us live through. It’s another thing to not give a damn, with veiled disdain as if it’s our own fault we’re not as rich as they are. It’s despicable.

      • September 9, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Actually as a person who has MS, I don’t see Ann like that at all. I don’t see her as having empathy for those of us who couldn’t afford to pay over 2K a month for MS injections, and the oral pill is more like 10K a month w/out ins. I don’t see empathy for those of us with MS who had to wait for 2 years on SSDI before we could qualify for Medicare to get medical care because we could not afford Cobra insurance from jobs we had to quit due to our condition. I don’t see her empathizing with those who have MS who cannot get approved for disability have to go to work each and everyday without the luxuries she has. I don’t see her empathizing with those of us with MS who had to return to work because we could not live off of SSDI pain and all.. She brags about donating to the Mormon church yet I have never heard her bragging about setting up a scholarship for children who have parents with MS, or donating to families struggling with MS. Having MS does not give you empathy. Most people with MS don’t have maids and multiple cars and homes. She should be the #1 advocate for “Obamacare,” considering her health conditions, but she is not so her performance today once again shows me just how out of touch they really are. Her husband has promised to defund planned parenthood. Services that help women discover cancer, but she doesn’t empathize with women enough to be against Mitt’s position on it so again she lacks empathy and is very unbelievable. Having MS does not equate to empathy.

        • 226 57andfemale
          September 9, 2012 at 7:39 pm

I have had two close friends with MS and I’ve watched them struggle with the stress, fighting with insurance companies, wondering if they can get treatment. Worrying about their families, the roof over their heads. I’m sympathetic to anyone with the disease, but Queen Ann has chosen to learn NOTHING about the struggles that the vast majority of MS patients face. She should hang her head in shame instead of parading her illness as a badge of honor when her husband’s policies would undo the work PBO and Dem’s have done to actually alleviate the suffering of those afflicted with this disease.

I’m going to link your comment on twitter. Everyone should read it.

          • September 9, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Reducing stress is one of the best therapies for people with MS to reduce the chance of flare ups etc. Ann Romney’s stress is not like 99% of Americans. Most people with MS are in that group of people who benefit from President Obama’s policies, not that 1% who her hubby is trying to help. I just went back to work after 7 years. I had to. It is hard trying to live off of SSDI. The GOP across the country including here in SC are slashing all kinds of programs that benefit the disabled. I could not qualify for Medicaid even when I first became disabled because my income was still considered too high. I have not heard Queen Ann discuss how #MythRomney’s plans would help others like me because he doesn’t have any.

I can’t possibly fathom what you’re going through, but I’ve seen the pressure on my two friends and it breaks my heart. My first friend with MS had been an incredible dancer with a future ahead of her, and it was devastating to watch her body take away her career and her passion, all the while wondering how she would support herself, whether or not she would be able to get treatment. The Romneys would be a disaster for this country.

GM, 57F. I side with Obamacrat – empathy would be best shown by AnnD’s actions, and if it were there SHE wouldn’t need to mention it so much because the ‘recipients’ would step forward. The Romneys really are ‘in a world of their own, that no one else can share’.

        • September 9, 2012 at 7:53 pm

          • September 9, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Yes Susan I am, but my faith is strong. Actually I am more on a natural path now. The injections and MS medications are very hard to take because of the side effects. I was a young 25 yr old mother when I was diagnosed. It was a very hard time. I was fully bed ridden for three months. I had a very good job but I had to take a medical leave of absence, and eventually quit after attempting to go back to work. I don’t complain, and I don’t use my MS as an excuse, but to Republicans I am lazy and have no desire to work. There are plenty of people with MS who want to be on medication, but simply cannot afford it. Some of the drug makers have special programs, but not all qualify. Ann Romney needs to be an advocate for MS, but she should not try to exploit it. I connect with Michelle Obama when she discusses her dad, but I have no connection with Ann Romney.

One of my favorites to this day is him chiding Hillary for taking on the role of Annie Oakley during the primary. Apologies to the Hillary primary supporters but since it’s all in the family now it’s fun to take a look back. I remember while the Obama supporters were all sweating how this would play out, Senator Obama qas taking it all in stride with some playful jabs: “That’s some politics being played —by Hillary Clinton. “Mitt Romney has been “demonized”? Really? Ann Romney has no understanding of the word — exposing her lack of empathy all the more.

Barack Obama has been called a socialist, a communist, a Marxist, a Kenyan, a foreigner, a Muslim, a nigger, the magic negro, a dictator, a Manchurian Candidate, a racist, a homosexual, married to a man, anti-capitalism, Hitler, Stalin, tied to Murderous Communist Terrorists, treasonous, a backer of global currency, a dope dealer, an Islamic terrorist, the most anti-religious president in history, “a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the U.S.,” and much, much more. have you folks seen this site? fantastic!!

‘ 90 Days, 90 Reasons is an independent initiative unaffiliated with Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. 90 Days, 90 Reasons was conceived by two guys originally from Chicago, Dave Eggers and Jordan Kurland. In late July, they looked around and saw that many of Obama’s voters and donors from 2008 needed to be reminded of all he has accomplished, and all he will do if given another term. They asked a wide range of cultural figures to explain why they’re voting for Obama in 2012, in the hopes that this might re-inspire the grassroots army that got Obama elected in the first place. Every day, a new reason will be posted—in short, Twitter form, with a longer essay available here. Please spread the word. ‘

When I first heard that Rahm was leaving the campaign I was kind of surprised. In retrospect him creating this Super-Pac is huge. We have got to hold the Senate and take the House to give PBO that real mandate that everyone says he had for two years but only real had for two months at the beginning of his term. I’m actually kind of surprised that PBO doesn’t mention voting for the congress people even more when he’s out on the stump.
