I cannot even stand his voice……so I cannot watch.

I left it on after the Matthews report on the President and heard UpChuck say

” Are you better off than four years ago ? The answer changed in just 24 hours ” ( paraphrasing ) before I clicked it off.

It’s O’Malley’s fault that this is even a question. He’s been reading to much of his own press. He should sit down and shut up.

Good morning TOD! Welcome back Chips! Just watched (most of) the Chris Matthews special on our beloved president, not bad, not bad at all. Actually, it was pretty good. I am so distrustful of the media, hence I tend to be a little skeptical. Have a great Labor Day TOD!

I just read this on Mediaite…..unbelievable!

Do Journalists Now Represent The Left On Meet The Press Panel?

Today’s panel offering was particularly interesting: former Republican Congressman Newt Gingrich, former Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina, New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, NBC analyst Tom Brokaw, and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

The roundtable discussion was not only interesting for its subject matter, but because it begs the question: was the show effectively putting up two journalists (Friedman and Brokaw) as representatives of the left?

Tom Brokaw represents the left??? ….what a joke.

Brokaw is what I call a phoney ” Limousine Liberal….”.. He thinks he represents ” Boomers ” His documentary by the same name was a laughable flop.

Phoney is right Linda…..he represents the 1%, that’s all he represents

      • September 3, 2012 at 8:43 am

He’s a good newsman when he wants to be. But unfortunately it’s been awhile. Now he’s falling into that elder statesman he said/she said mode and convinced himself of the whole Boomer myth he’s seems to have constructed.

In their latest book, the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalism team of Barlett and Steele argue that Washington and Wall Street have dismantled the foundations of America’s middle class through a series of actions over several decades. Chief among those destructive actions, they say,was deregulation of various industries and outsourcing of manufacturing jobs. They discussed the plight of the middle class with Juan Williams. ( Williams does an excellent job….he needs to get off of Fox )

I saw this last night and it is excellent…( I did not know that Deregulation began under Jimmy Carter )

    • 84 57andFemale
      September 3, 2012 at 9:22 am

Yes, deregulation started under Carter and ballooned under Reagan and also under Clinton. And of course the Bushes.

I truly wonder how kind history will be to Clinton’s presidency. He could have been the more ‘business-friendly’ President that the public needed from a Democrat (historical context), but he didn’t act much like a Democrat in many ways. The reason the RW media is the behemoth it is is because of Bill Clinton’s telecom bill that deregulated ownership. He was at a juncture where he could have reinstated the anti-trust laws that Reagan ignored, but he didn’t. For all the whining from the emoprogs, by the time PBO became President it was all but impossible to change the direction of that — not with all the battles he had on his plate.

Privatization of many government functions went on steroids under Clinton, and Al Gore was the one charged with overseeing that. God, I wish I could remember the excellent journalism I read about this during the Bush presidency. It was a writer that Al Franken had on his radio show. There is no way I can remember this guy’s name but I’ll try to find it. This writer made the case that turning over government functions to a profit sector was the beginning of dismantlement of the government that we need: companies don’t look for civil servants who serve the people, but attract an entirely different type of employee; and the tentacles of that have led to complete undermining of the function of government.

So, yes, Carter started some of it, Reagan put it on steroids (as did the Bushes, of course). But it was Bill Clinton who could have struck a sensible balance and he chose not to.

I’m bringing this excerpt from a comment posted yesterday by anotherslyfox. It’s very important for this week’s events.

// “Ok, so the 2012 Republican National Committee has ended. The Republican nominees for President and Vice President have been chosen. Now, in the words of Ann Romney, “It’s our turn” This week, the Democrats have their turn to rebuke and debunk the cesspool of lies and distortions that the Republicans have put out in the U.S.

This time, our focus should not be on the Democratic speeches. We know that they will be fact based, cogent, eloquent and opulent. We know that former President Bill Clinton, Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama will be the great speakers which will make the Republicans look like the cavalcade of the best of Ringling Bros, Barnum, and Bailey. Our focus should be on the U.S. Press Corps, because some tricky crap is coming. …

…This week, Barack Obama will lay out a real case of what has happened, what needs to happen, and what would happen if Romney were elected. The media, however, will try and turn their cameras from the festive gallantry inside, and try to find chaos outside.

The Republicans, along with the Professional Left and the Press itself, will try to highlight disappointment to the highest this week. They know the Republican convention was an outright failure, barely pushing up the approvals of the Republicans, so they will highlight the deficiencies of the Democrats tenfold. Whereas the Ron Paul supporters at the convention and their treatment were basically suppressed by our media, expect the Ratfucking contingent of the Professional left, and their golden child, Occupy to be amplified.

Expect that any and every word of the convention speakers along with the President and Vice President’s words to be analyzed and parsed for any readings of misstatement or if any word is different from what Mitt Romney actually or the Republicans “actually” said. Even if they actually did say it, expect the media to start the, “Well, this is what he actually meant.” Phase of it all. They always do.

I’m telling you, they will do all they can to make this narrative stick and find anything to tag as an equivalent to the GOP Convention mishaps and plain bad judgment calls. They will try and downgrade every single barnburner Democratic speech the way they are trying to upgrade every single Republican drizzle speech. It’s going to be tough and sickening, but I have the greatest hope that we will not only stick it out, but we will KILL their narrative. ” //

    http://theobamadiary.com/2012/09/02/chat-away-59/#comment-473620

I agree with anotherslyfox because it is extremely important that we keep this in mind when listening to the punditry this week more so than at any other time. We MUST NOT allow their vapid, disingenuous, and biased “analysis” to deflate us. Our Twitter brigade will be ready to counter any BS spin, and we will help Chips, and the other genuine pro-PBO bloggers out there to mount the most effective pushback that the MSM has ever had to deal with.

Now, ONWARD and FORWARD!! Let’s go get President Obama and VP Biden re-elected!!! #PRESSON

It’s so hard to ignore that the MSM is predisposed towards negative framing…even to the point of predicting it. Not that I intend to let them taint our week of festivities in my mind/eyes.

    • 93 hopefruit2
      September 3, 2012 at 9:08 am

Vcprez – just about EVERY report on President Obama and the DNC convention will be framed from a negative angle. I just posted a relevant excerpt above from another TODer’s comment yesterday.

      • 94 vcprezofan2
        September 3, 2012 at 10:01 am

Thanks for drawing that to my attention, Hf, as I had missed it previously! However, 😆 I’m happy to see that I had unconsciously fallen into my role. 😉
Very well said, AnotherSlyFox, and very clear! WE. CAN. DO. THIS. TOD media team! Let’s push back with force, facts, and with CLASS, DIRECTED SEVERELY AND DIRECTLY at the media where deserved.

I’m almost tempted to suggest that TODobots put a hiatus on Dem criticisms for the entire week (even if we feel it’s merited – they lie; we can delay criticism) and just concentrate on calling out negative or lying pundits, AND ON PRAISING DEM EFFORTS! My suggestion is that whatever we ADDRESS DIRECTLY TO DEMOCRATS this week BE PRAISE elements. CAN WE? Only for the week? Think of it as another type of donation – not monetary sure, but maybe almost as effective this week.

Okay, there! I suggested it. …..Just saying……strongly… :grin; Some TODobots can be so pushy! 😉

“I’m almost tempted to suggest that TODobots put a hiatus on Dem criticisms for the entire week”

This is an EXCELLENT idea vc!!! We do not want to give the MSM any fodder. They troll liberal/pro-PBO sites for narratives, and we don’t want to enable them in this nonsense.

          • 96 vcprezofan2
            September 3, 2012 at 11:22 am

Ta, Hf. 😀 Not just on site here though, but also those of us who phone / TWITTER / facebook / E-MAIL / whatever.

Let’s LET THE MSM DO THEIR dirty NEGATIVE WORK ALL BY THEMSELVES while WE TRY TO BALANCE THE SCALE to the best of our abilities. It would be nice if when we push back we try not to repeat their evil memes but instead reword them to fit the truth. Although we may not be as powerful as the MSM, we have the ability to make some impact. Remember how quickly the RNC empty chair business took legs?

            Let’s do it, TODobots!

    • 99 cluny
      September 3, 2012 at 9:21 am

bravo Vick – the one that gets me mad, is so stupid and now seems to be robotically repeated by every dumb journalist is the ‘are you better off than you were 4 years ago’. DUH! If you count the fact that the financial industry is no longer in melt down mode, jobs are being added as opposed to losing close to 800,000 per month, 401k/s have bounced back, the markets are way up, the auto industry is going gangbusters, Al qaida is nearly kaput – with OBL gone, Iraq is done, troops are starting to come home from Afghanistan and manufacturing, new energy source production is up then OBVIOUSLY things are better. I HATE the way they speak about what happened as a ‘typical’ recession. I’m no economist but even I know that it takes at least 10 years to come right back from a financial crisis. So, sorry for the rant but YES let’s all push back when we hear these dumb, lazy questions. I’d like to hear the assholes ask Republicans (principally lyin’ Ryan) just once about the responsibility he and his buddies bear in Congress for obstructing JOBS bills while the country is in crisis and how many points that contributed to the UE rate.

      • 100 vcprezofan2
        September 3, 2012 at 10:10 am

A twitter member suggests that the media needs to ask why the GOP hasn’t voted on the American Jobs Act, and I agree that’s a more relevant question that goes beautifully with ‘are you better off?’

      • 101 sjterrid
        September 3, 2012 at 3:38 pm

It’s a question that is designed to get a negative response. It doesn’t matter how it was answered either way they would have attacked the answer. Didn’t the whole media take the President’s remarks about the private sector out of context, and use it to say how many people were still suffering.

I agree Vicky, let’s not attack dems this week. We should focus on the message that we are moving together forward as a country.

    • September 3, 2012 at 9:33 am

That’s such complete BS! They are basing their entire narrative on some article showing that if non-voters vote en masse for Pres.Obama he can win in a landslide. He can win w/o those folks, he has before. These aren’t disaffected people who voted in 2008 but won’t vote for him now. Totally different and they should stop selling it as such.

      • 103 57andFemale
        September 3, 2012 at 11:33 am

The point is, the RW votes and our side does not vote in sufficient numbers to make this the no-brainer it should be. ALL of the RW votes — people who lean in our direction stay home at a higher percentage. It’s disgusting and I don’t have a problem having that discussion.

Now, when that morphs into all of those non-voters being ‘disappointed’ PBO voters, that’s b.s. They don’t vote no matter what. And never have their way of life been more at risk than this election.

Because this time the RW means it. they will do everything they say they will do, if given the chance.

HOTEL OWNER THRILLED BY OBAMA STAY

President Obama is spending Sunday night at the Toledo Hilton.

The hotel’s owner Grace Kellogg was at Toledo Express Sunday night to welcome Obama as he stepped off Air Force One.

She says having the President stay at her hotel is surreal.

“So excited… I’m sixty-two years old. I never dreamed in my life when I came to this country that I can see the president stay in my hotel. It’s a dream of my life.”

Remember when Andrea Mitchell and even Lawrence O’Donnell were trying to tell us that Romney’s acceptance speech was “excellent?” Well, voters no longer need pundiots to tell them what to think. They’re quite capable of using their own judgment, thank you very much.

According to right-leaning Gallup, Voters rated Romney’s speech among the lowest since Bob dole in ’96.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/09/03/1127202/-25-Reasons-Why-We-are-Better-Off-Today-than-Four-Years-Ago

    I know:)

In the Fall of 2008, Bush was running around—“ahhh, ahhhh, America’s going bankrupt.“ Ben Bernake was sweating like he just ran a marathon, McCain yelling “incoming, incoming, git off my lawn” – OBL making videos while Americans were dodging bullets in Iraq.

America was the laughing stock of the world with shoes being thrown at the president. Stock market crashing, banks failing while Paul Ryan was borrowing the money from China that he’s railing about now.

And then, in steps the hated Kenya, Communist, Socialist, Muslim and look at what he’s done in four years…people:

    1. Saved the banks
    2. Brought the stock market from 6,500K to 13,000K
    3. Saved GM
    4. Repealed DADT
    5. Ordered a Mini Dream Act
    6. Created 4.3 million jobs
    7. 27- straight months of private-sector job growth
    8. Passed Healthcare
    9. Ended the war in Iraq
    10. Drawing down from Afghanistan
    11. Doubled the Number of Border Security Agents
    12. Appointed First Hispanic Justice
    13. Restored America’s Standing in the world
    14. Dealt effectively with the BP Oil Spill
    15. Dealt effectively with the Pirate Crisis
    16. Dealt effectively with H1N1
    17. Kept America Safe
    18. Passed Financial Reform
    19. Passed a Credit-Card Bill of Rights
    20. Passed Equal Pay for Women
    21. Nearly Wiped out Al Qaeda
    22. Killed OBL
    23. Added Eight-yeas of solvency to Medicare
    24. Quit smoking
    25. And got a dog

All of this was done with a republican opposition to every single thing he tried to do.
So yes, not only are we better off now, we’ll be even better four years from now with Obama’s leadership!!!

    http://www.cepr.net/index.php/blogs/beat-the-press/qare-americans-better-off-today-than-they-were-four-years-agoq-the-questron-that-exposes-incompetent-reporters

While the source is not clear, someone developed a simple way to identify incompetent news reporters. If you hear a reporter ask people in President Obama’s administration, ideally in a belligerent tone, “are the American people better off than they were four years ago?,”the reporter is trying to tell you that they are not qualified to do their job.

The reason we know that the questioners are incompetent reporters is that this is a pointless question. Suppose your house is on fire and the firefighters race to the scene. They set up their hoses and start spraying water on the blaze as quickly as possible. After the fire is put out, the courageous news reporter on the scene asks the chief firefighter, “is the house in better shape than when you got here?”

I was thinking we should develop a theme and list of what the GOP has done to sabotage the economy so we could not say we were better off. It could be detailed including which bills they blocked and how many times blocked like the American Jobs Act. It could show their stalling and blocking efforts that ended in the downgraded financial ratings and Simpson Bowles report they then tried to blame on Obama. The many empty appointments and judges appointments needing approval that were anonymously blocked. The historic statistically high number of filabusters in the Senate and on and on. It could be simplified yet inclusive of all obstructive efforts to try to be sure the economy was not better off. It could be listed like the one showing why we are better off.

This is what REAL journalism looks like!

    http://billmoyers.com/2012/08/30/money-in-politics-where-is-the-outrage/

We are nearing the culmination of a cunning and fanatical drive to dismantle the political institutions, the legal and statutory canons, and the intellectual and cultural frameworks that were slowly and painstakingly built over decades to protect everyday citizens from the excesses of private power. The “city on the hill” has become a fortress of privilege, guarded by a hired political class and safely separated from the economic pressures that are upending the household stability, family dynamics, social mobility, and civic life of everyday Americans.

Socrates said to understand a thing, you must first name it. As in Athens then, so in America now: The name for what’s happening to our political system is corruption — a deep, systemic corruption.

    How did we get here?

Let’s begin with the judicial legerdemain of nine black-robed magicians on the Supreme Court back in the l880s breathing life into an artificial creation called “the corporation.” An entity with no body, soul, sense, or mortality was endowed with all the rights of a living, breathing “person” under the Constitution. Closer to our own time, the Supreme Court of 1976 in Buckley vs. Valeo gutted a fair elections law passed by a Congress that could no longer ignore the stench of Watergate. The Court ruled that wealthy individuals could spend unlimited amounts of their own fortunes to get themselves elected to office, and that anyone could pour dollars by the hundreds of thousands into the war chests of political action committees to pay for “issue ads,” clearly favoring one side in a political race, so long as a specific candidate or party was not named.

Money, the justices declared in another burst of invention, was simply a form of speech.

    There’s More…..

PBO is up by 4 pts as per the PPP poll. The realclear politics average which is right-leaning and owned by Steve Forbes has him up by one pt. It’s also useful to remember that PBO decisively won FL in 2008 by a 3-pt margin, and at this time in 2008, John McCain was LEADING in FL.

Ok I just posted a comment on his blog (still in moderation) asking Nate that if he shows Florida in light blue the electoral votes for POTUS is 332 not 307. ?! And Romney would then be down to 206. So we will see – all other light blue are in Obama’s column so I don’t know why he didn’t add Florida.

Here’s how you can do your own counter on this elecoral vote interactive map. Just click on a state and it will change from blue to red or vice versa and update the tally. http://www.270towin.com/

Just want to report on the way the OWS protest was reported on the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia — The protestors want more bank reform and more attention to the environment. No anti-Obama message at all. If that’s all they’ve got, it’s no big deal.

  58. 190 cookemom
    September 3, 2012 at 10:34 am

On CSPANs Washington Journal’s call–in show, they talked about how the local newspapers are covering the OWS in Charlotte as more of a parade than a protest. I think the national news outlets are going for the tabloid reporting style on this. My question is did OWS protest the RNC convention, or did Isaac send them packing? I didn’t hear any newscasts about them.

My political take today is that while I do try to stay neutral on the MSM coverage of political stuffs, I do have one observation. It seems they are highlighting the Repubs ‘Are You Better Off’ meme. They are asking that question of Dem guests, advancing the Repub narrative, instead of asking about what the Dem narrative will be this week. I do object to the pundits who are trying to put their Dem guests on the defensive based on the Repub attempts to discredit the Dem agenda. This week they should be asking those Dem guests about the Dem plans to go FORWARD.

I still will not let them get me bent out of shape though. They are doing the job as it’s been defined by the corporate news industry. I’m able to separate that from the reality of what we need to do, regardless of the punditry. We gotta GOTV. Our votes trumps any money they spend and anything they have to say.

    • 191 jacquelineoboomer
      September 3, 2012 at 12:21 pm

cookemom – I heard a bit of coverage of OWS yesterday on CNN. Yes, they were at the RNC convention with a lot more people than headed to Charlotte. Their numbers dropped from “thousands” in Tampa to “hundreds” at the Dem convention – one of the OWS New York organizers said they lost a lot of the group between the cities because people couldn’t afford to travel to NC. The signs I saw were not anti-Obama but anti-Bank of America and Wall Street, and the group marched outside of B of A in Charlotte – also heard there were only a couple of arrests yesterday among the OWSers. Hope that’s all we hear about them this week.

There’s an easy fix for that…NC needs to vote for PBO, he needs to win handily with majorities in BOTH Houses, and we can seriously address the issues of unions and workers in America. If they have an issue with “Right to work” states (and they should)…then they should work on electing the man that thinks workers deserve to be at the bargaining table…..not the guy that wants to ship their jobs overseas so HE can make more money. I really don’t want to hear this BS…they know what they need to do…
