OK, so you click on the date and get to the new URL. If it’s a pic.twitter link, click on that. That will take you to another page with a new URL that has

        photo/1 at the end

Cope and paste that URL in the comment box.

If the photo is an instagram or another type of link, I don’t think it’s possible to post an embedded photo.

    Sully: Romney’s Speech: Blog Reax

Josh Marshall gives the speech relatively low marks:

[O]n balance, I thought it was fairly weak as a speech. He’s the underdog and he’s the guy who needs to have a galvanizing introduction to the general public. In those terms, it was a missed opportunity. A pretty big one.

Josh Barro is on the same page:

Romney is shallow and incoherent on policy for strategic reasons. He attacks from whichever direction is likely to be effective — even if that means getting to the president’s left, as on Medicare — and keeps the focus on Obama’s failures. Getting too specific might lead people to focus on Romney instead. That strategy might be enough to win the election. But it does not help the public figure out how Romney would run the country.

    Jonathan Bernstein’s bottom line:

A generic speech and a generic convention for a generic Republican candidate.

Social Security. Medicare. Iraq. Afghanistan. Illegal immigration.

They’re all costly to taxpayers and the next president presumably will have to address them to one degree or another. Yet GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made no mention of those issues Thursday in his wide-ranging acceptance speech that closed the Republican National Convention.

  66. 203 amk for obama
    August 31, 2012 at 6:28 am

As the Obama campaign heads into its convention next week, Democrats see openings both to fill in unpopular details of Mitt Romney’s agenda left unsaid by Republicans in Tampa this week and to raise new questions about Mr. Romney’s character after widespread criticism of misstatements by him and his running mate, Paul D. Ryan.

“It’s sort of breathtaking that Paul Ryan made a whole speech about being truthful and making hard choices and yet he never mentioned a single idea of theirs — like turning Medicare into a voucher program, or a new $5 trillion tax cut they can’t pay for,” David Axelrod, President Obama’s chief strategist, said in an interview on Thursday, hours before Mr. Romney’s own acceptance speech. “They’ve spent an entire week not talking about their ideas because they know their ideas are unpopular.”

HEADLINE: Obama orders improvements in mental health care

// President Obama plans to sign an executive order today aimed at reducing the rate of suicide and mental health disorders in veterans and troops by improving access to behavioral health care.

The order, to be announced during a presidential visit to Fort Bliss, Texas, will direct cabinet agencies including the departments of Veterans Affairs, Defense and Health and Human Services and Education, to expand suicide prevention efforts, fill vacancies for mental health jobs and widen outreach to service members and veterans.

The executive order, “Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members and Military Families,” includes actions to improve access to mental health services for service members and veterans, including enhanced partnerships with community providers and increased VA staffing; and mental health research, a senior White House official said. //

    Nate Silver:

Based on his prepared remarks, the term that Mr. Romney used most often in the speech was America, which he said 53 times.

The next most common word? Americans, which he said 35 times. Other terms that Mr. Romney used at least 10 times in the speech included jobs, better, future, business — and mom and dad.[…] But Mr. Romney uttered the word Medicare just once. He never used the terms Social Security, welfare, or entitlement.

He never mentioned Iraq or Afghanistan, nor did he use the term terrorism, although he did refer to the mission that killed Osama bin Laden. […] Mr. Romney only once mentioned his tenure as governor of Massachusetts, and then only to describe how he had chosen a woman as his Lieutenant Governor and appointed women to key cabinet positions. […]

Instead, Mr. Romney’s strategy was pretty clear. He was seeking to fulfill the role of the generic Republican — a safe and unobjectionable alternative with a nice family and a nice career – and whose main credential is that he is not Mr. Obama, the Democratic president with tepid approval ratings and middling economic numbers.

It may be a smart approach.

    • August 31, 2012 at 8:20 am

    Romney’s missed opportunity to lead

    By Steve Benen

And last night, I kept waiting for something, anything, that resembled substance, but it never came. About the closest thing Romney came to a meaningful policy idea was his stated goal of using public funds to subsidize private school tuition. That’s a horrible idea, but I’ll concede it at least counts as an idea.

But when it came to public policy, that was about it. Once again, the Romney campaign message boiled down to: President Obama hasn’t done enough; I’ll do more; just trust me.

Romney intends to cut taxes, and we’re supposed to trust him that he’ll figure out how to pay for it. Romney intends to destroy the newly-improved health care system, and we’re supposed to trust him that he’ll figure out what to replace it with. Romney intends to create millions of jobs, and supposed to trust him that he’ll figure out a plan to make that happen.
