    Love this post, Chips.

And this is the greatest response yet: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/08/ideals-make-us-american-not-origins/261551/

“Ideals Make Us American, Not Origins”

“Nobody’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. But as someone of Chinese descent I have been asked plenty of times where I’m from — and when I say “Poughkeepsie,” I often get the follow-up question that’s almost a cliché now among Asian Americans: “No, where are you really from?”

It’s always disheartening to get that question, even though I’ve learned to answer it with equanimity and usually take care to make the inquisitor feel not-stupid. But it’s always clarifying, for it reveals the default picture in the minds of some of my fellow Americans about who they are, who we are, and who I am.

That’s why Mitt Romney’s birther-baiting remarks today are, in a way, welcome. Let there be no doubt: He is the candidate for people who think the name Obama must be Muslim and its bearer indelibly foreign. He is also the candidate for the greater number of people who do not initially imagine that someone with my face, my eyes, my skin could be from this country.”

Really speaks to me because of my origin.

ck, i think i saw one time that you’re on the younger side of the scale around here…i first started noticing this many elections ago, where no matter how horribly the republican candidate was doing campaigning or while in office, with incessant blunders, there would magically be a poll(s) showing them gaining! i think you’re just noticing the same playbook they’ve been running ever since the same billionaire class started buying up all the media, of which the polling companies are part now. in fact, the fake polls are done specifically to try to turn the momentum to the republican and cover up their failures.

and it’s not about keeping it a “horserace” either, as many suggest. if that were true, do anyone honestly think that if a republican candidate had a huge lead in polls, we’d be seeing slanted polling and false coverage to boost the democrat? i certainly don’t think so. same as it ever was…

as exactly predicted after the utter disaster of rmoney’s european vacation, “the news” has been slowly building a narrative that rmoney is on the rise, with polls as their main propaganda weapon. what on earth that has happened since mittbot’s horrific trip could possibly suggest he’s gaining traction?!?! just the opposite as he goes from one failure to next, along with ayn rand running mate, and president obama just keeps nailing it. until we fix the billionaire control of the nationa discourse through the media, we’ll always have to struggle to win elections, no what the facts are…

I doubt this is all very applicable.

      Wikipedia sez:

“The Constitution does not define the phrase natural-born citizen, and various opinions have been offered over time regarding its precise meaning. A 2011 Congressional Research Service report stated

The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term “natural born” citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship “by birth” or “at birth”, either by being born “in” the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship “at birth”. Such term, however, would not include a person who was not a U.S. citizen by birth or at birth, and who was thus born an “alien” required to go through the legal process of “naturalization” to become a U.S. citizen.[1]

Do Democrats book who appears on these shows? I hope you are not blaming Democrats for “being on the sideline.” If you are, your blame is very unfair. It seems to me that 100% of the blame belongs to the Republican propaganda media masquerading as objective U.S. media.

Totally agree nathkatun7. These shows lineups usually favor GOP, but I guess with the GOP convention coming up they went overboard with GOP bookings. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, GO “BIRTHER”

We Hear You Loud & Clear, Mitt. Romney Goes Birther.

    By Oliver Willis

    ———————–

Mitt Romney is desperate for the election conversation to be changed. What’s happening right now isn’t working for him. Paul Ryan’s selection got him stuck in explaining his way out of killing Medicare. Then the Todd Akin situation highlighted just how extreme the party Romney leads has become — while also showing how impotent Romney is as the titular head of the entire enterprise.

So now Romney takes a page from his surrogate and fundraiser Donald Trump and goes birther:

    SHEER DESPERATION

The Obama Campaign Hammers Romney for Going Birther in Michigan

    By: Jason Easley

    ———————————–

In response to Romney’s trip down the birther trail, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LeBolt said, “Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It’s one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.”

Romney is correct. No one has ever asked for his birth certificate, but the American people are demanding to see the tax returns that he continues to refuse to release.

Desperate campaigns do desperate things, and with nearly every poll except Fox News showing him trailing Obama, Mitt Romney is getting desperate.

Paul Ryan still opposes abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health or life of the mother. Mitt Romney isn’t willing to go that far, but he has supported a personhood amendment to the Constitution that would effectively make Ryan’s position the inalterable law of the land. Here’s what you need to know about abortion rights. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, John Roberts, and Antonin Scalia think Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood were wrongly decided and would overturn those cases.

    Mitt’s Biography 2.0

    By Ed Kilgore

    —————————

We’re going to see a lot of this Mitt Biography 2.0 next week, as the campaign tries to rebuild the candidate as someone who does not appear to have been born on another planet. We’ll get the full-on treatment about the Winter Olympics, now that he’s safely a few weeks past the fiasco in London. We’ll get a carefully bowdlerized account of his governorship of Massachusetts, with budget-balancing and tough-decision-making emphasized and everything else vaporized. We’ll supposedly get a glimpse of his religious life—presumably the parts of it that stay a million miles away from LDS theology or history. And we’ll get lots and lots of family, as evidenced by the very high-profile role his wife will play in Tampa.

This all makes sense; just because Romney’s biographically-based rationale for candidacy basically fell apart over the summer is no reason he shouldn’t use millions of dollars in earned media to build it back up again in an environment where no one is arguing with him.

We ponder what Mitt was thinking by bringing up the birther issue. Have you heard anything today about Akin, taxes, rape, shut it down, you people, PAynRand? No? I wonder why. Don’t be fooled, this was orchestrated cause nothing grabs the MSM and tin foil wearers more than birther talk. It’s just another negative campaign tactic. Sure, it got PBO some good donations that he may not have gotten today. Mitt calculated that into the risk and found it to be well worth getting everyone off of raging rape and magical ovaries. This takes the teabutts into their convention fired up for what Mitt did instead of depressed about what Akin did.

Truly I don’t think birthed comments help Mitt Romney with anyone but the racists who are already voting for him. It alienates the few authentic Indies around. The second piece of good news is that Todd Akin just gave the finger to the GOP leaders. Third, the CNN poll shows PBO improving dramatically over the last CNN poll and moving above 50% with a hefty 9% lead. That “likely voter” screen is totally bogus and done to please GOP voters who may want to watch the convention on CNN next week. ( doubly bogus because those voters are watching Fox first and Foxlite second.)

  51. August 24, 2012 at 6:30 pm

What about that CNN poll. How did we do?

    • 127 Nena20409
      August 24, 2012 at 6:42 pm

With Registered Voters, TeaNN, CNN, Fox lite has pres Obama at 52% and Birther Lying Bishop Romney at 43% Then they disqualified their Registered voters’ poll numbers and all of a sudden, Unlike how they did last Month. They added Likely voters from the same registered voters they polled. Thereby skewing the samples.

Pres Obama was at 49% and Romney is within the MOE at 47%. Likely voters mean more in Late October. Last month registered Voters per CNN, pres Obama was 6-7% ahead. Gained 2-3% points in August. But per the Mathematics of TeaNN, Romney is tied with pres Obama.

Then why is the Lying bishop going full birtherism on 8-24-12? Internal polls of Romney, that is my guess.

I hope that I explained it all.

  52. August 24, 2012 at 6:33 pm

BREAKING: Major Victory For Voting Rights Advocates As California Legislature Approves Election Day Registration
    http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/23/737251/california-edr/

As voter suppression laws spread across the country, voting rights advocates can take heart: the biggest state in the nation is on the cusp of passing a major voter protection initiative.

Election Day Registration (EDR), which allows citizens to register up to and on Election Day, passed the California State Senate today by a party-line vote of 23-13. AB 1436 had passed the State Assembly in May 47-26.

Under current law, Californians cannot register to vote in the final two weeks before an election, just as many Americans are beginning to tune in. EDR will eliminate that deadline, ensuring that no citizen is disenfranchised because he or she wasn’t registered beforehand.

This won’t just benefit slackers. Historically-disenfranchised citizens like minorities and poorer Americans, will particularly benefit from EDR. On average, studies have found that EDR boosts voter turnout by seven percentage points. Common Cause’s Phillip Ung told ThinkProgress he “expects voter turnout to increase by the hundreds of thousands” solely as a result of EDR.

Eight states currently allow their citizens to register on Election Day: Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. California is poised to become the latest, and by far the largest, state to enact EDR.
    ————

    Way to go Cali!
