They can’t hang that “angry black man” on PBO because people see him in action and have never seen him anything other than calm, collected, and focussed. It must drive them even crazier.

what happens if health providers bid for Medicare contracts but the bids all come in higher than Ryan’s growth cap? Do premiums go up for seniors? Ryan doesn’t say so, but then again, he also refuses to say what would happen. But there’s no fairy dust here. If costs under the Ryan plan go up more quickly than his growth cap — and they almost certainly will — then someone has to pay the difference. And that someone is either beneficiaries or taxpayers or healthcare providers. There aren’t any other choices.

But it can’t be taxpayers, because that undermines the whole point of the plan. And it can’t be providers, because Ryan’s plan has no mechanism for cutting payments to providers. In fact, he and Mitt Romney have recently abandoned even the existing provider cuts contained in Obamacare. So all that’s left is seniors. Every year their voucher will cover less and less of the cost of the cheapest plan, and seniors will have to pay more and more out of their own pocket. By refusing to address this issue, Ryan has successfully kept things vague enough that no one can produce hard numbers about how much more seniors would end up paying. But it would be a lot.

The old idea of the competitive market will keep prices down has been proven not to work IMO. Look at how the competitors have gotten together and price fixed to keep prices high. They quit having price wars and started colluding to keep prices high. That is why I don’t trust the private market to take over Medicare. People can always put some of their money in the stock market but we need the safe government plan.

  14. 70 Bill R.
    August 18, 2012 at 10:05 pm

RyanRomney have framed the election. It’s about Medicare! Everyone paying into Medicare now, will lose it and get a voucher instead. Ryan told the seniors today, “we won’t take your Medicare Card, but we will take the Medicare Card of everyone who is paying for your Medicare and give them junk insurance, a stinking’ voucher. And they will just have to like it.” Time to spread the word.

    • 71 veryslowwriter
      August 19, 2012 at 2:31 am

I think most seniors know that. Which is why, back when this Ryan “plan” was first presented, polls showed that a majority of seniors opposed it. And precidely for the reasons you’d expect: “I benefit from Medicare and SS and why shouldn’t my kids and grandkids?”

If you want to know what a Mitt Romney presidency and a Paul Ryan vice-presidency would mean for your local family planning clinic, look at what happened in Texas and Ryan’s home state of Wisconsin.

Women’s health clinics around the country rely on federal funding for family planning. Almost all of that money comes from two sources: Medicaid, the joint federal-state health care program for low-income people, pregnant women, and infants; and the decades old program known as Title X.

GOP governors like Texas’s Rick Perry and Wisconsin’s Scott Walker have targeted both of these income streams in their states, blocking many clinics from receiving crucial funds. But Romney and Ryan would gut both programs on the federal level, all but ensuring that clinics in blue states have to close, too.

“What has [been] done in Texas, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would do in all 50 states if elected,” says Dawn Laguens, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the advocacy and political organization that works to protect Planned Parenthood health centers nationwide.*

Also in the Grunwald book, I read that Jared Bernstein is also a bassist. He plays the Double Bass. I knew there was something about him that I love when I see him on LOD or Rev. Al. Now I found out in my reading of this new book by Grunwald. Thanks desertflower for sharing very valuable info. and analyses. The American people have been poorly served by the mainstream media which are more interested in sensationalism and horse races than they are in providing accurate information and informed analyses of government policies. Our sensationalist media seem more interested, and focused, on criticizing everything that President Obama does than they are in honestly assessing his record of accomplishments. I lost faith in the MSM during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. At the time they seemed to be echo chamber of Bush’s lies that justified the war on Iraq. The same media that gave President Bush a pass on almost every thing has been relentless in attacking and demonizing President Obama. As far as I am concerned, It’s very obvious that the vast majority of MSM, from day one of the Obama presidency, have been aiding and abetting the Republicans in making sure that President Obama is not re-elected.

I am so beyond disgusted when I read in the DesMoines Register what that sick hate-filled Hank Williams, Jr. told the audience at the Ia. State Fair last night. After singing his anti-Obama song, “We don’t apologize for America”, he said, “We’ve got a Muslim president who hates farming, hates the military, hates the U.S. and we hate him!” I saw that 99% of the comments were equally disgusted and angry and couldn’t believe the Ia. State fair board scheduled him, that he didn’t belong in Ia. and that his problems—-irrational hate and anger and mental health issues—- have been evident for some time and they had to know what they were getting. Many people said he’s always so drunk he can hardly stand up. I was so angry I wanted to respond to the fair board for their irresponsible, ugly decision, and I see Ia.’s Repub governor, Branstadt, is on the board. I’m guessing this was a political and purposeful decision.
