I just finished reading Leon Uris’ book “Armageddon”, about the Berlin Airlift. This was just before I was born, so I knew of, but the book made me realize what an intense, incredible effort it too to keep the citizens of Berlin alive during the Soviet blockade, and Germany from becoming completely Communist. It continued for months, with British and United States forces sending thousands of tons of supplies into Berlin night and day; an amazing ballet of landings, unloadings, and take-offs every few minutes day and night. We did this not many months after the end of the war when our soldiers were tired, our air force was depleted, and all anyone really wanted to do was go home and forget. We did it for our ENEMIES and turned them into allies. If you want to call the U.S. exceptional, this was truly an outpouring of exceptional strength, exceptional courage, and exceptional compassion. Now Ryan, Romney, and the rest of the tea-partyists are saying we can’t even offer far less support for our OWN CITIZENS. We can’t even put a comparatively small amount of effort into giving our own people what they need to survive. These are the people who insist America is ‘exceptional’, Except now we are exceptionally selfish, exceptionally short-sighted, and exceptionally cruel.

    • August 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm

      Hi maryl1,
You must watch then Senator Obama’s speech in Berlin. It’s on the sidebar. The speech was all about the airlift and about what we all need to do in our time to solve the problems of the world. To this day, this speech is special to me, and I sometimes listen to it again when I feel a little discouraged. There’s one sentence in it that will bring me to tears every time – it’s when he talks about the planes bringing candy to grateful children.
You see, I was one of those children even though I did not live in Berlin. I remember one incident when I was 5 years old and received my very first piece of chocolate from an American GI. I was a displaced person, a refuge in my own country. I had forgotten about this gift from so long ago until I first heard the Berlin speech and it came back to me. Yes, I know well what makes America “exceptional” and there is no better example of it than our President who understands the real values of the country that I now proudly call my own.

      • August 17, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was moved also when reading about that. It was the idea of one of the pilots. He rigged little toy parachutes and attached chocolate bars. The crew would throw them out of the plane as they landed. The airlift was a moment when answered the call of “the angels of our better nature”, as Lincoln said. That’s what President Obama wants us to do to. I remember hearing the speech when he gave it. Thank you for reminding me of it; I will listen to it again,

Matt Taibbi, I will take OVER any of the people sitting in the WH press Room. I honestly don’t want a reporter who sucks up to pres Obama or any other POTUS. I want reporters with the know how to just investigate and report. 3-6 like Matt Taibbi, Romney would have released his tax returns by now. All I ask of any report is ask hard questions, seek for answers and don’t back down. I don’t like harsh and disrespectful verbiages by any reporter. The reason I liked Helen Thomas. She had her opinions. They were not hidden like, dislike her. But she went after people in power just the same.

Jake Tapper, Chip Reed, Ed Henry, Briana from TeaNN, etc are Not reporters. I will take Matt Taibbi any old day over those people covering pres Obama. Pres Obama doesn’t mind being challenged. Pres Obama hss no time for those who insult and those who lie and make up things.

Nena with all due respect, I see nothing “fearless” about someone who writes columns/blogs for a living and hardly lifts a finger to actually get anything substantive done while constantly taking gratuitous shots at the very person who’s down in the trenches trying to make change. Giving the President the respect and civility that he deserves as a human being and our Commander-in-Chief doesn’t mean that we are “kissing his butt.”

With all Taibbi’s “fearless” reportage I can’t think of one thing he has accomplished in the last 3.5 years that has substantially made a difference in people’s lives for the better. And yes, I do think our President would have issues with Taibbi or any other who is disrespectful towards him.

Is Matt Taibbi’s job to report, agitate, ask questions and try and hold people accountable or are those not part of his job? It was from reading Matt Taibbi’s pieces back in 2007, 2008 and 2009 that I was able to truly get all that were wrong with Wall Street. RollingStone has done wonderful pieces of then sen Obama and pres Obama. Matt Taibbi has a different job that the president of USA.

Wisconsin was dominated by the recall for the first part of this year. Then it shifted to the US Senate race with the primary held just this week. The only advertising was for the Senate seat and an outside group running deficit numbers. Two Republican candidates were running against President Obama. They lost. The winner mostly ran good feel biography stuff (I don’t watch broadcast often but this is what I observed). Wisconsin holds an open primary and the Democratic candidate was unopposed so Democrats were free to vote for Republicans if they so desired.

My hope is that Ryan with be so thoroughly discredited by being exposed for what he really is that he will lose his House seat. A lot of his constituents have no clear idea of what policies he really holds. Just seems like a nice guy to them. His district encompasses cities (Kenosha, Racine and Janesville) that are industry based with a lot of union members, and with national exposure could spell trouble for him.

  21. August 17, 2012 at 3:55 pm

You won’t hear about this in the American press:

US election: Mitt Romney may have breached ethics laws through company linked to Paul Ryan’s brother
Mitt Romney may have breached state ethics laws as Governor of Massachusetts by holding a stake in a company that did lucrative outsourcing work for his administration and was linked to the family of Paul Ryan, a Daily Telegraph investigation has found.

The Republican presidential candidate appears to have profited from a marketing company that was contracted by the state of Massachusetts after receiving $5 million (£3.2 million) in financial backing from Bain Capital, Mr Romney’s investment firm.
One of his vice-presidential candidate’s brothers, who is a former Bain consultant, was at the time of the investment a senior executive at the marketing company, Imagitas, which was co-founded by another former Bain executive.

Both Mr Romney and Tobin Ryan, who omits his work at Imagitas from his corporate biography, also apparently stood to benefit from the $230 million (£146 million) sale of the company in 2005, while Mr Romney remained in office.

Massachusetts law requires that all state employees divest themselves of financial interests in private sector contracts with state agencies. At the time, failure to do so could have resulted in a $2,000 (£1,273) fine or a 2.5-year prison sentence. The potential punishments are now stronger.

Romney Answers Obama’s Tax Returns Challenge and Makes Things Much Much Worse

    By: Jason Easley

Obama is successfully using the tax returns issue to destroy Romney’s credibility. How can voters trust Romney on the issues if he can’t even be honest about his tax returns? Mitt Romney doesn’t get is that the issue isn’t the returns themselves, but what his refusal to release them tells voters about his character.

I have a hunch that if it was up to the campaign, the tax returns would have been released long ago. The refusal to release the tax returns is probably coming from Ann and Mitt Romney themselves.

Political pros repeatedly suggest publicly and privately that Romney has to release the tax returns at some point. They are basing their presumption on the notion that if he doesn’t release them, he will lose the election. But Mitt Romney doesn’t have to release them, he can decide that he would rather lose an election than let people see them.

Obama Campaign Calls Romney’s Bluff: Just Give Us Three More Years of Returns

    By: Sarah Jones

Just three more years, Mr. Romney. What’s so hard about that?

The Obama campaign just put Ann Romney’s victim complex to rest. If the Romneys don’t put up some returns now, when the Obama campaign is making a huge concession for them — a handicap if you will since the Romneys can’t compete in the free market of tax returns and instead demand special privileges — they won’t be able to take wallow in their persecution complex without looking rather ungrateful.

This is a plum deal! Only three more years — special privileges for Mr. Romney. The Obama campaign must know that Romney can’t release his returns and won’t release his returns and it’s not because of any questions the Obama camp would ask. Obama just dared Romney to man up, and kicked him in the place Romney keeps his tax secrets.

Obama administration releases earmark funds for infrastructure jobs

Washington (CNN) – In an effort to create more jobs and improve transportation, the Obama administration announced a new “Use It or Lose It” program Friday, making nearly $500 million in unspent earmarks available for states to use on so-called “shovel ready” infrastructure projects.

From 2003 to 2006, Congress set aside $473 million in earmark transportation funds that have never been spent.

This law has been implemented at warp speed and people are having trouble keeping up. Bad Numbers Budget: Why The Ryan Nomination Isn’t Helping Romney

    written by: Carville-Greenberg Memo

Nearly a week has passed since Mitt Romney announced Paul Ryan as his running mate, with no evidence so far that choosing the Wisconsin Congressman boosted the Republican campaign. If the Ryan choice falls flat, that won’t surprise us at all – because in selecting him, Romney adopts the principles and priorities of Ryan’s radical budget plan as his own.

Romney can’t say we didn’t warn him. Last month, we released a memo underscoring the Ryan budget’s potential impact on Mitt Romney. When voters learned that Romney had given Ryan’s budget his full-throated support, they pulled back sharply—to the extent that President Obama’s lead against Romney more than doubled when the election was framed as a choice on the Ryan budget.
Finally, voters reject Ryan on both practical and moral grounds. In focus groups and surveys, what evidently drives voters most sharply and permanently away from Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney is their concern over budget priorities they regard as simply immoral. Even we were surprised at how strongly voters feel about this distinction. They take a moral approach to evaluating the proposed cuts in the Ryan budget. And they reject the budget on deeply principled and unmovable grounds.

I agree dotster, and I was very pleasantly surprised, and will give Smerconish FULL CREDIT for doing an excellent job of discrediting Gomez in just a 10-minute segment. Smerconish basically eviscerated Gomez and left him a bumbling, contradictory mess at the end. First he used hard evidence to destroy Gomez’s claim that PBO did not give the military and SEALS any credit. Then he described PBO’s intentions and plans going way back to the 2007-08 campaign when he was derided and mocked by even some in his own party. The other guest who was present, Stoltz, was also very articulate in challenging Gomez’s claims. Stoltz had his facts ready, and talked about the Birther guy being part of this group.

I think this swiftboat group needs to regroup and come up with something new for another day, because this effort has just gone up in smoke, thanks in part to the good work of Smerconish that is now on VIDEOTAPE.

Right! I was shocked at the interview before it started.
        My bad.
I wouldn’t even interview them, however.
        Just my opinion.

Smerconish smacked him down and had another Vet on there who smacked him down worse. The swiftboater looked foolish.

Yes, agree with both of you. I saw same thing. That is one time Michael did good!

Another thing, he claims that he “donated to Obama’s campaign” in the 2008 primary. HAHAHAHAHA! Many Republicans wanted Obama to be the nominee because they thought he was the weaker of the two DEM candidates against their Republican candidate. And yes, some of them did donate to PBO, and probably voted in the DEM primary for that reason and that reason only.

Founder Of Obama Swift Boating Group: ‘I’m A Birther’

By Aviva Shen on Aug 17, 2012 at 4:17 pm

On Wednesday, a group of former intelligence and Special Forces operatives released a 22-minute video accusing President Obama of jeopardizing sensitive information in order to take credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden. OPSEC, as they call themselves, is one of several new groups dedicated to attacking Obama on military issues, specifically on the Osama bin Laden raid. Now the founder of one of these organizations, Special Operations Speaks, has proudly come out as a birther.

Speaking to Foreign Policy’s Josh Rogin, Larry Bailey, a 27-year veteran Navy SEAL, embraced several conspiracy theories about Obama’s roots:

      I have to admit it, I’m a Birther …

      • August 17, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Except he negated the whole reason for calling himself a birther by saying PBO’s father was not Kenyan but a communist from Hawaii thereby making both parents American citizens. I get the feeling he didn’t think this thing through.

Well There Ya Go! “Admitting” you’re a birther is admitting you’re Stupid.

Smercornish did his job as a trained attorney. He allowed the guy to speak and then Michael Smercornish took the guy down with facts, indisputable facts. That is all I ask of any person on TV/Cable, print, air waves, etc. providing Facts, nothing more.

I think, you might have bailed from the rest of the show. But I promise you, Smercornish did a good job.

While Angry Ann Romney Rages, First Lady Michelle Obama Charms

    By: Jason Easley

There is a difference between sitting down for a television interview and appearing on the stump, but the differences between these two women are a microcosm of the 2012 election. Ann Romney, like her husband, comes off as negative and defensive. Even watching Mrs. Romney on the campaign trail, one does not see a warm person. For the Romneys, this election isn’t about you. It’s about them. They aren’t doing this for you. They are campaigning because they feel that the White House is their rightful home.

Republicans and their media lackeys are trying to define the Obama campaign as the most negative race ever run, but if you watch the Obamas on the campaign trail, you’ll see smiles and an optimism for the future. If Mitt Romney’s message is that America is doomed, Barack Obama is telling the country that he still believes in us and he knows we are destined for more greatness.

Michelle Obama has an ability to relate to people and their experiences that Ann Romney completely lacks. Mrs. Romney has no clue how “you people” live, but Michelle Obama hasn’t forgotten that she was one of “you people”, not all that long ago. The Obamas understand what it is like to be middle class. In contrast, the Romneys have never been middle class.

Has anyone remarked(as in noted) yet today that by the time the Romney campaign ‘masters’ an O campaign strategy, the O team has already move way ahead? Mitt copies whiteboard and looks somewhat awkward, then Stef C shows him the electronic whiteboard. 😆 😆 /nose in the air/ WE always look so professional in what WE do.
