Hey, an historical site!

A 3,000-pound granite marker sits at the corner of Dorchester and 53rd Streets where President Barack Obama first kissed first lady Michele Obama, Aug. 16, in Chicago

The President first kissed his now-wife outside a Chicago ice cream shop – and there’s a plaque to prove it.

The owners of a Hyde Park shopping center installed the 3,000-pound granite marker this week with a plaque reading “On this site President Barack Obama first kissed Michelle Obama.” There’s a picture of the first couple and a quote from the president describing their first date.

The sweet smooch happened in 1989 when the president treated the first lady to ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins, which is now a Subway restaurant. The boulder sits in a flower bed next to the shopping center.

The Obamas will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary this October. They have a home in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood, not far from the shopping center.

Thanks Dotster and Dudette!

I’m demanding equal billing since I posted Breaking News! of the Love Stone—the Kissing Rock! very early this a.m. —–first thing.
You can have all the glory this time, dudette. But it’s going to cost you—–another donation to PBO. 🙂

Much respect due on your early alert,dot-honey! I’m happy to share in the warm glow!! 🙂

Honestly, I didn’t see your post. I just happened to go look for new “Obama” pics on Daylife, one of my usual sources of daily delight and “poof” there it was. Would’ve given you the shout, had I known. Truly-uly!!

    Congratulations, C4O.

WHat a great and tender idea: to commemorate the first kiss of a president and his spouse. This is of the Wow, just WOW EVENTS THAT make me well up with tears and chills. Wow. Just, Wow.

Now for the serious stuff. Is it true that PBO needs Pennsylvania to win? If so, should we not be sending funds to whomever is in charge of getting out the vote in Pennsylvania? This Pennsylvania thing is worrying, as are all the other states that are using this tactic.

I’m wondering why more people aren’t raising hell about this.mMy and parents’ generation risked life and limb to obtain this right.

I know I’m preaching to the choir, so would someone please tell where to direct my outrage where it might be effective.

Response to today’s ruling on voter ID
By OFA Pennsylvania on August 15, 2012

In response to today’s ruling by the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court, Obama for America Pennsylvania Press Secretary Jennifer Austin issued the following statement:

“Regardless of today’s decision, we remain committed to working with supporters and volunteers across the state to register and educate Pennsylvanians about the Voter ID law. We want to ensure all eligible voters have the information they need to get to the polls in November and exercise their right to vote. Since the passage of the law our campaign has included information on the new provisions in volunteer trainings, information resources, online, and in voter registration and education activities, and we will continue to do so. Now more than ever it is important that the Commonwealth follow through on its plan to make available free IDs to any voter who may need them. Regardless of party affiliation, we support ensuring any voter eligible to cast a ballot has the right to do so.” – Jennifer Austin, Obama for America Pennsylvania Press Secretary

Paul Ryan taking Medicare battle to Florida retirement community over weekend

    Posted by Felicia Sonmez

WARREN, Ohio – How serious is the Romney campaign about seizing the offense in the Medicare battle?

The campaign is dispatching Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, to a Florida retirement community this weekend.

Ryan will headline a campaign event at 10 a.m. Saturday in The Villages, the sprawling retirement community frequented by GOP candidates, including by Romney during this year’s primary battle.
Ryan will be joined at the event by his mother, Betty Douglas, 80.

Mars Curiosity Rover Team Spills Mission Details On Reddit

Twelve members of NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover science and engineering team — the team responsible for the rover’s operations on the surface of the Red Planet — took to the social news website Reddit on Thursday to answer users’ questions about the mission.

Despite being bombarded by hundreds if not thousands of questions, the Mars Curiosity team members didn’t disappoint, rapidly and candidly answering questions ranging from everything about the plan for the rover’s activities on Mars to their own computing and smartphone preferences.

TPM has compiled a list of some of the most interesting responses to come out of the live question-and-answer session (known on Reddit as an “AMA” short for “ask me anything”):

[Please read the article for details, but here are the main bullet points]

    – NASA would tell the public ASAP if it found evidence of life
    – The Curiosity rover is unlikely to ever leave its landing site, Gale Crater
    – The Curiosity team prefers Macs to PCs
    – There’s an app for that (“that” being telling time on Mars)
    – The Mars Curiosity Rover lacks lights and a microphone

Love it. Thanks for posting, Chips and Dudette.

Chips, you’ve outdone yourself the last couple of days posting the wonderful photos and videos from Iowa.

All the photos are wonderful, from the delicious ones of Barack and Michelle together, to the enthusiastic Iowans. But my favorites are of PBO with the infant Ethan Muhire (http://theobamadiary.com/2012/08/14/iowa-day-two/ and http://theobamadiary.com/2012/08/15/rise-and-shine-268/). PBO is so gentle and caring in a way that you just can’t fake.

Can you imagine R-money holding an infant stranger? AWWKKKWARDD.

Dana Millbank has a memory and is showing some real spunk lately:

“Forgive me, but I’m not prepared to join this walk down Great Umbrage Street just yet. Yes, it’s ugly out there. But is this worse than four years ago, when Obama was accused by the GOP vice presidential nominee of “palling around with terrorists”? Or eight years ago, when Democratic nominee John Kerry was accused of falsifying his Vietnam War record?
What’s different this time is that the Democrats are employing the same harsh tactics that have been used against them for so long, with so much success. They have ceased their traditional response of assuming the fetal position when attacked, and Obama’s campaign is giving as good as it gets — and then some.”

there now some folks do know how to respect & treat our President & First Lady.

Today I heard Senator Testor’s radio ad.. wherein he never once stated he was a Democrat, but sure did state loudly two times how he opposed the Obama administration on Keystone, and the EPA regulations. If I lived in Montana he would have lost my vote today. I am not a purist, but it is utter bs to be so proud – as a democrat- to have opposed “Obama”. Eff Testor

      August 16, 2012 at 4:16 pm

And the sad thing about Tester is, after all of the running away from PBO, he will probably lose anyway. They forget that they need the democratic vote and PBO’s OFA plays a big role in getting out the votes for him. I hope he doesn’t lose because we need him even if he is a DINO.

I agree with you. ND is the same way- Pam Gufilson (sp) has also distanced herself from POTUS & no where on her site does she say she’s a dem, yet she was endorsed by democrats. Its painful and frankly hurts my heart when I see this happening.

I noticed that about the time Scott Brown was running in MA that all of the GOP candidates did not include their party label and acted like Independents. Must be a way both parties distance themselves from what they consider to be a way to be insulated from losing votes. It made me mad when Repubs did it and I feel the same with Dems. But DINOS are a different breed of Dems that hardly count as such.

Oh snap, Jay Carney on McCain:

During his Thursday briefing, Carney said McCain isn’t one to talk about picking vice presidents.

“One place I would not go for advice on vice presidential running mates is Sen. McCain,” Carney said to laughs and groans. He noted, though, that he has “great admiration for and respect for” the Republican senator.

    Bring on the whiteboards

    By Steve Benen

Let’s put it this way: if there’s a whiteboard code of honor, Romney just shredded it. I’m delighted he thought to use the medium, but this summary is so ridiculously dishonest, Romney has tarnished the very idea of whiteboard lessons.
On the other hand, now that Romney is forcefully committed to spending more on Medicare, he’s inadvertently endorsed a policy that hastens Medicare’s fiscal demise. “Instead of running out of money in 2024, Medicare says its trust fund for inpatient care would go broke in 2016 without the cuts,” the AP explained today. “That could leave a President Romney little political breathing room to finalize his own Medicare plan.”

Everything Romney said today with his whiteboard was wrong, predicated on the notion that Americans are fools who won’t know the difference.

So Anne is curious as to what’s in their blind trust, cause she doesn’t know, but she knows whatever is in there is there legally. Besides, she says, if they release their tax info, then people will look at them. Well…no one said anything about legality, but duh….that’s why folks are asking for them. I agree totally with Chernynkaya! The so called mainstream media have utterly failed the American people. If it weren’t for the social/alternative media, a very articulate, personable and accomplished president, and the well organized and disciplined Obama campaign, Willard Mitt Romney, the pathological liar, would be guaranteed to be the next President of the United States. The mainstream media have done everything to assist him in his quest. The Media were all over Al Gore about any perceived, or purely manufactured, lies that he supposedly told. The media were all over John Kerry, calling him a flip-flopper, over some minor positions that seemed to be contradictory. Yet, most of the media are completely silent over the serial liar and king of flip-flopping, Willard Mitt Romney. I know of no other politician in my life who says one thing today and says something totally different tomorrow as does Mitt Romney. It seems like his VP choice, Paul Ryan, is catching on when it comes to lying, or quickly changing positions on issues.
