‘A match made in heaven’

Charles Pierce: Leave it to Willard Romney, international man of principle, to get himself bullied into being bold and independent.

… In his decision to make Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny-starver from Wisconsin, his running mate, Romney finally surrendered the tattered remnants of his soul not only to the extreme base of his party, but also to extremist economic policies, and to an extremist view of the country he seeks to lead ….

…. Which is not to say this isn’t a shrewd move. In one great swoop, Willard has recaptured a good portion of the elite political media, which has been crushing on Ryan’s “courage” to take on the “tough choices” — none of which, it should be pointed out, likely will affect Ryan, who’s already got himself an education out of the social safety net he now intends to shred, and certainly will never affect the haircut at the top of the ticket, or his great-grandchildren….

… Paul Ryan is an authentically dangerous zealot. He does not want to reform entitlements. He wants to eliminate them. He wants to eliminate them because he doesn’t believe they are a legitimate function of government. He is a smiling, aw-shucks murderer of opportunity, a creator of dystopias in which he never will have to live. This now is an argument not over what kind of political commonwealth we will have, but rather whether or not we will have one at all, because Paul Ryan does not believe in the most primary institution of that commonwealth: our government….

….  Paul Ryan, the zombie-eyed granny starver, has done very well by the federal government that he seeks to dismantle. Come to think of it, so has Willard Romney, although we may never know exactly how well he’s done by it. It turns out this is a match made in heaven, after all.

    deep deep deep…..

let us not be deterred….let us not be dragged back into that discussion about debt and deficit…the conversation is about Jobsssssss…Prosperity…….and the Middle Class….

to be sure debt and deficit are important…but it is the how that has to be discussed….

listen to Ryan speak today….see if he mentions the Middle Class….and if he does…how it is used….

I’d go a step further and suggest that Ryan wants to eliminate entitlements because he has already had his turn and don’t anticipate needing them in quite the same way anymore..

and indeed….it is the ideology…of the role of government

Ryan/Romney do not believe in the role of government as it relates to the safety net for the middle class and those that want to be in the middle class..

.but when it come to the banks…financial institutions…and the wealthiest of Americans…the government is their tool…

“The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand,” Ryan said at a D.C. gathering four years ago honoring the author of “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead.” …

At the Rand celebration he spoke at in 2005, Ryan invoked the central theme of Rand’s writings when he told his audience that, “Almost every fight we are involved in here on Capitol Hill … is a fight that usually comes down to one conflict–individualism versus collectivism.”

How Paul Ryan captured the G.O.P

    By Ryan Lizza

    ———————————I

In mid-April of 2011, in a speech at George Washington University, Obama once again decided to make an example of Ryan. Republicans were finally about to vote on the Path to Prosperity, and the President was eager to offer his opinion. Obama, for nearly the first time in his Presidency, emphasized the ideological divide between the two parties rather than offering bromides about what they shared. The White House invited Ryan to the speech and reserved a V.I.P. seat for him. Obama had personally called Ryan after Republicans won the majority in the House the previous November, and Ryan thought the two might have a rapport. They both liked sports and, because Ryan’s district runs along the Illinois border close to Chicago, knew many of the same people. “He’s a cerebral guy who likes policy, and he’s from my part of the country,” Ryan said. “At the beginning, I did have some hope.”

Ryan sat in the front row as the President shredded his plan. “I believe it paints a vision of our future that’s deeply pessimistic,” Obama said. “There’s nothing serious about a plan that claims to reduce the deficit by spending a trillion dollars on tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. And I don’t think there’s anything courageous about asking for sacrifice from those who can least afford it and don’t have any clout on Capitol Hill.”

Ryan seemed genuinely shocked. During a radio interview later in the day, he complained that Obama had called him “un-American,” and he objected to the charge that he was “pitting children with autism or Down syndrome against millionaires and billionaires” and “ending America as we know it.” Ryan told me, “I was expecting some counteroffer of some kind. What we got was the gauntlet of demagoguery.”

OBAMA CAMPAIGN STATEMENT ON ROMNEY VICE PRESIDENTIAL PICK
    August 11, 2012

CHICAGO – Obama for America Campaign Manager Jim Messina released the following statement in response to Mitt Romney picking Congressman Paul Ryan to be his presumptive nominee for vice president:

“In naming Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy. The architect of the radical Republican House budget, Ryan, like Romney, proposed an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires, and deep cuts in education from Head Start to college aid. His plan also would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system, shifting thousands of dollars in health care costs to seniors. As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy. Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes.” http://www.barackobama.com/press/release/obama-campaign-statement-on-romney-vice-presidential-pick

MHP should be let go, never have cared for her.

          • August 11, 2012 at 11:06 am

            Right, deserflower,
There was an article in an Atlanta newspaper the other day that mentioned that enrollment in GA colleges is down. The republicans have cut the public education budget to the bone and are warning that more cuts are on the way. With republicans, it’s always a no way out situation. They funnel public money to Christian schools and private colleges, create laws that allow the rich to “designate” where their education funds can go (but not into the public coffers,) leaving students who want to improve their lives via education with no way to attend college, then they demonize them and characterize them as being lazy, unemployed, and as wanting something for nothing.

      • August 11, 2012 at 11:13 am

IMO, after observing MHP for some time, I think she struggles with knowing who/what she is. It just seems that way to me. Although she has a doctorate, she seems very timid and afraid to tell the truth about anything. There are times when one must/should tell the truth, and this election is one of those times. MHP does no one any good, not even herself, by being mealy-mouthed and afraid to tell her viewers that Ryan is a creation of RW media. I don’t watch her program because I can’t deal with her overly conciliatory tone/words at times. For gosh sakes, something is either right or wrong, true or false, and there’s no room for throwing out a compliment just to make someone else feel good about themselves. Paul Ryan couldn’t care less about MHP, and she needs to learn that she owes him nothing and act like it.

Arrests at Paul Ryan’s ‘town hall’ event
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0911/62815.html

“Three people were arrested and 20 removed from Rep. Paul Ryan’s appearance at a “pay per view” town hall crowd on Tuesday, according to local police. Ryan’s appearance before the Whitnall Park Rotary Club in Greenfield, Wis., came after POLITICO revealed that he was one of at least four GOP members of Congress who appeared before only paying crowds while not holding any free town hall meetings open to the public during the August recess.

During the event the House Budget Committee chairman spoke over protestors who tried to shout him down, according to video of the event posted by Milwaukee Fox affiliate WITI-TV.

“I’m going to keep talking, because this is what you asked me to come here to do,” Ryan told members of the crowd, whose $15 admission fee included a hot lunch. “I have never been so encouraged before. and I know you see, gosh, there’s police here and there’s protesters there and this, this has triggered such an incredible outpouring of support and encouragement, I’ve never seen it before.”

“I’m being arrested because I spoke out against my congressman,” one woman yelled at the Fox camera as she was led out of the hall by two police officers.

Sgt. David Patrick of the Greenfield, Wis., police department told POLITICO the three people arrested were issued municipal citations. Two of the three were cited for trespassing and fined $429. The third was cited for trespassing and resisting arrest and fined $681, Patrick said…” [more in the article]

Willard has shown repeatedly that he has no core, no center, no spine.

And, the President gets what he wants: a clear CHOICE for November.

The Ryan Budget plan is now the ROMNEY/RYAN Budget plan until Election Day.

Willard chose as a running mate, Dubya’s House Point Man on Privatizing Social Security, the author of VOUCHERCARE, which they got the GOP House to vote for not once, but TWICE.

Oh yes, the high fives went up all over the Prudential Building once this was leaked last night. The last group that was stubborn to the President have been Seniors – now, they have to confront for themselves…vote for the scary Black man or vote for those who would take away their Social Security and Medicare. With this selection, these Seniors have been bitchslapped into reality.

Well, this VP pick gives me a new talking point when I make calls to NC next week. Hey, I have some friends that want to phone bank, but they can’t make it to the actual events. Can someone give me the link to where they can get the names and numbers online to make calls from home. Thanks in advance!

there are two clear winners today in my book:

    vulture/voucher
    and
    obamacares/whocares

not sure where v/v came from, but seems to me the other one came from our own cookemom. i think we can ride those two to strong majorities in the house and senate. forward!!

    Doh! Freudian Slip!

BONUS Chuckle for Most Inappropriate Theme Music of The Month:

Career politician, who never served in the military a day in his life, takes the podium on a battleship to the theme song from a movie about a President who’s a former Air Force fighter pilot “The American President”

You can’t make this shit up!

omg!! you all weren’t kidding. that whole scene is so weird it’s eerie. the ultimate draft-dodging “fortunate son,” and a kid who grew up getting government handouts and has spent his entire adult life living off taxpayer-supplied paychecks, while standing on a virtually a shrine for what can be accomplished with taxpayer money, and they’ve spent their entire careers denigrating anything having to do with government and are actively trying to dismantle government as much as possible. the whole thing is so creepy! i’m surprised they didn’t play this for the grand entrance of the “biggest brown-noser:”

      damn, these people are dumb.

Isn’t it weird that mittbot literally stepped off the stage after introducing voucher ryan (as the next president, no less, in another mittfail) ? Aren’t they both supposed to be hugging and waving to the crowd after the intro ?

I guess Robme liked “voucher” because it sounds so close to his next favorite word, “vulture”.

i really thought it was going to be thune. i bet paul lyan was the only one who would say yes to the offer. all those others probably have plans for bigger office and realize running with the world’s biggest loser could end their chances forever. paul lyan is much younger and probably thinks people will forget eventually about his association with the mittbot, and run nationally in a couple cycles from now. he wants the national name recognition. if nothing else, he’ll now be able to up his speaker and consulting fees for the rest of his life when goes into the “free market real world” of wingnut welfare, which exists almost completely on a few billionaires funding that entire “free market.”

    Interesting! http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021109685

Democrats in Red States are gaining ground by going after opponents who support the Ryan Plan.

They’ve pointed out that Obama campaign has been tying Romney to Ryan for some time now and are more than prepared to go after Ryan.

Wow. It really is like Romney’s campaign is trying to lose.

With Ryan, they can look like they are tossing red meat to the base, but ultimately, they are going to lose.

Romney’s been polling higher with the elderly. That will surely change with Ryan as VP.

And Catholic Bishops have spoken out against Ryan’s plan, saying it is against the teachings of the church, leaving the elderly and the poor to fend for themselves.

Ryan is Romney’s worst possible pick.

Ryan will be Mitt Romney’s running mate.

What you need to know right now: This election is about values, and today Romney doubled down on his commitment to take our country back to the failed policies of the past.

Congressman Paul Ryan is best known as the author of a budget so radical The New York Times called it “the most extreme budget plan passed by a House of Congress in modern times.” With Mitt Romney’s support, Ryan would end Medicare as we know it and slash the investments we need to keep our economy growing — all while cutting taxes for those at the very top.

Over the next few days, Romney’s campaign and its allies will tell a very different story about Paul Ryan.

Our job is to make sure Americans know the truth about what Romney’s choice says about him as a candidate and leader, and to stand with President Obama and Vice President Biden at another major moment in this campaign.

    Say you’re with them:

If I had had to withstand the embarrassment of having to introduce a running mate that I didn’t really want, I’d cancel all interviews, too. Ryan wasn’t Romney choice, he was the far right fringers’ and Bill Kristol’s choice, the same Bill Kristol who encouraged McCain to choose Palin as a running mate in 2008.
