SacBee: The nation’s first lady is hitting the campaign trail in eastern Pennsylvania. Michelle Obama will stump for the president’s re-election on Thursday in the Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley areas.

She’ll first hold a rally in west Philadelphia at the University of the Sciences’ athletic center. She will then travel to suburban Fort Washington, where she’ll greet supporters at Upper Dublin High School, and end her trip with remarks at Moravian College in Bethlehem.

NYT Editorial:  Mitt Romney’s campaign has hit new depths of truth-twisting with its accusation that President Obama plans to “gut welfare reform” by ending federal work requirements. The claim is blatantly false, but it says a great deal about Mr. Romney’s increasingly desperate desire to define the president as something he is not.

…. this is what happens when a flailing campaign searches for a wedge issue to gain popularity among blue-collar voters. Mr. Romney’s empty promises to magically turn around the economy are losing effectiveness, so why not vilify welfare recipients and portray the president as coddling them?

That approach was favored by an earlier generation of Republican operatives, and it helped divide the country into warring political classes. Mr. Romney, no less cynical, seems bent on repeating the past.

E.J. Dionne Jr: …. Political commentary these days is obsessed with the triviality of this campaign. Most of it is rooted in the refusal of conservatives to be candid about the implications of how their beliefs and commitments would affect the choices they would have government make — and how they differ from the president’s.

In Romney’s case, this often requires him to invent an Obama who exists only in the imagination of his ad makers. So they take Obama’s statements, clip out relevant sentences and run ads attacking some strung-together words that have a limited connection to what the president said. In the welfare ad, Romney lies outright.

But this is part of a larger pattern on the right, illustrated most tellingly by conservative rhetoric around the Affordable Care Act. In going after Obamacare, conservatives almost never talk about the specific provisions of the law. They try to drown it in anti-government rhetoric….

….Here’s your chance, conservatives. Big, bad government is forcing those nice insurance companies to give people a break. From what you say, you see this as socialism …. You cannot possibly keep this money. So stand up for those oppressed insurers and give them their rebates back!

…. I’d also be curious to know whether Romney got a rebate on his health insurance premiums courtesy of Obamacare and whether he plans to return it. But given his attitude toward disclosure, we’ll probably never find out.

Needless to say I’m not going to post it, but I just happened to see a listing for a Young Turks/Cenk Uygur video on YouTube posted two days ago, with the title ‘What If Trayvon Had Died In A Drone Strike?’ Yep, that’s the level to which the fraud has descended in his increasingly desperate campaign against the President. Uygur? **** off, you right wing piece of crap.

I just refreshed the page, and there was no new thread. I jump on Twitter for half a second and see ‘rise & shine” Then I jump back on TOD thinking that I’m in first place, only to find out that at least three people have beat me to it!!!!!

I expected the Rise and Shine thread to be well on it’s way by the time I turned on my PC this morning. I’m usually late to the party. Much to my surprise I see ‘write a comment’. I tape Hardball but usually end up deleting it cuz I get mad at what Chris Matthews says. Sometimes he is the best supporter ever while other times he might as well be a GOP.

There have been many rants about him on here in the past. I think I have figured him out finally. From watching some of his recent shows I have heard him say all of his family is Republican except himself. I have also heard him say he is a strong budget hawk. So as I suspected he leans heavily right of Dems, not quite completely GOP. Maybe more like a DINO except for a few issues. He totally LOVES the Kennedys and the Clintons. He’ll take Obama over Romney but lost his tingle up his leg. It all depends on what the issue is when tuning in to his show as to whether he seems a supporter or not. For awhile I just thought he was schitzophrenic since he seemed to swing from one side or the other without notice. I now think you just need to pay attention to what the issue is.

Chips I hear you about Uygur. He is truly a disgusting human being, and his rantings are no longer in the realm of partisan or ideological punditry – it’s a personal venom. It came to the point where he has not even been welcome on Old Orange – and that was BEFORE they became more positive towards PBO….

One correction. Young Turk isnt a RWNJ he’s actually a lefty who had a show on MSNBC but was too left 4 even them. I dont agree AT ALL with him using Trayvon Martin’s name because that was just wrong. But he was talking about drones because he’s Arab-American and has an issue with the use of drones 2 kill.

    • August 9, 2012 at 9:18 am

We’ll agree to differ! He was a hardcore right-winger and member of the GOP until he suddenly became a ‘progressive’ to pursue a media career. Anyone can change their political views, but this guy is a complete fake and has reversed almost every position he ever held (eg on abortion, affirmative action (which he opposed), feminism (which he had a major issue with in his GOP days), the war in Afghanistan (which he supported), etc. He’s not Arab, he’s Turkish-American – and an Armenian genocide denier. He has opposed PBO from day one and his sole aim is to turn ‘progressives’ against him, that’s what his entire media career is all about.

He’s sooooooooo smug Cluny, you’re spot on. If he was sincere he wouldn’t bother me, but I just know he’s a fake. I’ll never forget him dismissing the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as a “minor” piece of legislation, simply because it was PBO who signed it. Equal pay for women is a “minor” thing? How progressive of him …. his mask sure slipped that day.

If he is Arab American then why ain’t he calling out Al Qaeda and the Muslim extremists?
He seems to side with Al Qaeda, who I have actually seen, and they are Jerks, to say the least. Al Qaeda hates all Americans and want us dead.

First, Cenk is not an Arab-American. He is a Turkish-American. Second, he is a former right wing Republican who voted for Reagan. Some of his tactics remind me of the Republican tactics, especially the tactics of neo-conservatives who were former radical Democrats. Third, from day one, he has been on a mission of personal vendetta against President Obama. Fourth his use of Trayvon Martin was despicable. Finally, just because he had a show on MSNBC does not necessary make him a genuine “lefty,” or what I would prefer to call a genuine Democrat.

Goooood Morning O peeps!!!!! Another great getting up day to board the TOD train!!! I’m looking forward to the conventions and the spin that’ll come out of them. So far, the pubs have relegated the Newts and the $arahs to minor roles. Newt’s doing a workshop on school choice in a closet somewhere. $arah’s shooting caribou in the parking lot.

My political take today is if you speak to an undecided (I’ve never met one), ask them what they’re waiting for? I think those are the folks who like to play with the pollsters.

    • August 9, 2012 at 9:12 am

Me thinks, this Election is so publicized and important, that their is only 2 or 3% undecided left, if that.

When someone doesn’t want to tell a pollster who they are voting for, they can be candid and say they don’t want to respond, or quite often they will prefer to say “I’m undecided”. Let’s not forget that.

The labor super PAC Workers’ Voice is going after Mitt Romney’s record at the Olympics in a new advertising campaign, charging that he “steered millions to his Bain subsidiaries” while running the Salt Lake City Games.

“In Mitt’s Olympics, he went for all the gold,” says an online ad backed by the group.

That online ad has $50,000 behind it and targets white, noncollege-educated men in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Washington D.C., according to a Workers’ Voice official. The idea is to reach people who have seen Romney’s ads telling his side of the story on the Olympics, and present them with a different version of events.

That advertising is coupled with a mail piece (above) that’s going out to 250,000 voters in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, the same official said.. You can see the full, double-sided mailer here.

“Romney gets a lot of press for ‘saving’ the Games, but there’s been little exploration of how he used his power — and hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds — to enrich Bain Capital subsidiaries,” the union-backed group tells its supporters in an email set for release today.

I have a dumb question: are there not companies that Romney decimated before this alleged 1999-2001 period that we can highlight? Why is it always about companies where the Repubs get to say that Romney has no responsibility?

Of course it would be nice if one of these news lemmings would simply ask him what he would have done differently, if he disapproved of the way his company conducted business in that period and was it any different than the way he conducted business before that period?

    Just asking.

    http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2012/08/romney-flack-promoted-climate-denial-behalf-exxon

Andrea Saul is the press secretary and chief spokesperson for Gov. Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign. But before Romney hired her, Saul worked for a DC-based public affairs and lobbying firm that worked to undermine climate science on behalf of corporations like ExxonMobil, according to a detailed new report from Greenpeace’s Polluter Watch project.

While working for DCI Group, Saul worked on anti-climate-science campaigns on behalf of Exxon. That included creating the faux news site Tech Central Station, which was used to promote columns from climate deniers like Willie Soon and Pat Michaels. Saul is listed as the contact person on the archived version of the Tech Central page.

She was also listed as the point person on a press release claiming that there is “no link between increased storm activity and a massive change in global climate” that was released in 2006, several months after Hurricane Katrina. DCI Group also created a video news release downplaying the climate-storm connection, though it’s not clear which DCI client paid for that work.

In late 2006, Saul also handled press for group of 17 climate skeptics who were trying to get the American Meteorological Society to weaken its statement on climate change by adding terms like “data uncertainty issues,” “natural variability,” and “imperfect climate models.”

Gingrich admits: ‘no proof’ to support welfare smear

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————

When the host pressed further, asking if Gingrich would concede the “wording of the ad is not actually accurate,” the Romney surrogate ultimately conceded, “We have no proof today, but I would say to you under Obama’s ideology it is absolutely true that he would be comfortable sending a lot of people checks for doing nothing.”

So to summarize, Romney lied to the public and said Obama’s policy eliminates the welfare law’s work requirement. Romney’s high-profile surrogate appeared on national television, rejected the wording of Romney’s lie, acknowledged there’s “no proof” to support the lie, but said it might turn out to be true eventually. Maybe. He thinks.

Who’s bright idea was it to make Gingrich a campaign surrogate?

As President Obama said, Sandra is a tough, poised and eloquent advocate. I was bursting with pride as she introduced President Obama. She is fierce. Generally, his feeling about web ads is they only serve to separate the viewer from his or her cash. But this one got to him. It was a fund-raising ad for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. Stipkovitz, 59, decided to donate a couple bucks — $25 or $35, he can’t remember now — to the effort.

“I feel like he’s the best president I’ve ever experienced in my lifetime,” Stipkovitz recalled, noting he especially appreciated the president’s support for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and the immigration DREAM Act. It was the first time the semi-retired industrial technician and former Coast Guard member who’s originally from McKeesport ever gave to a campaign and it turned out to be a fateful event.

Last week, the president phoned Stipkovitz at his home to thank him for his support. He was one of only two donors to the campaign the president called.. …Stipkovitz said that before they closed the phone call, he told the president, “You have my 100 percent support.” //

That is so cool. Definitely brought a smile to my face. I love how the Obama team does donations. They never make it feel as though they’re forcibly taking your money. They always make it fun or heartwarming and you feel good knowing your money is going to someone who practices what he preaches.

I think some of them are beginning to realize that their shilling for Romney and enabling his lies are actually hurting, rather than helping him and THEM as well. They’re not calling him out on principle. They’re calling him out because it’s beginning to affect their bottom line. People are tuning out and getting their info from other sources, and Romney’s ratings and unfavorables continue to decline.

ROMNEY CAMPAIGN DEFINED: “MAKE UP WITH TACTICS WHAT YOU LACK IN VISION”

The Romney campaign’s big health care blunder

Philip Klein – Senior Editorial Writer

    ——————————————

It’s hard to say what type of political ramifications this specific development will have, but I do think it’s an example of a broader problem. Romney consistently attempts to make up with tactics what he lacks in vision. Romney’s campaign isn’t driven by any core ideology or governing philosophy, but by responding to news cycles. It is a campaign that was perhaps best summed up by senior advisor Eric Fehrnstrom, when he proudly tweeted yesterday, “On Fox just now Romney was asked to respond to ‘RomneyHood’ charge and called it ‘Obamaloney.’” Conservatives, rest assured – Romney will not allow himself to be called a childish nickname without responding by calling Obama a childish nickname.

So, if Romney thinks touting his past support for government-run health care today can help defend against baseless attacks on his business career, then he’ll tout away, even if it’ll weaken the case against government-run health care he’ll make tomorrow.

Just wondering if anybody else here noticed the new MSM pattern last couple of days. The night before last I was watching the Tweety segment with Joe Klein and Howard Fineman. Fineman announced that the next Romney line of attack on the O campaign was going to be a ‘have you no decency’ line – i.e. Obama and his people are terrible, politics as usual monsters. When I heard it I thought ‘what idiots’ – ‘that wont work’ but sure enough, next morning, Morning Joe began with the inquisition on Robert Gibbs on the Priorities Usa ad and this same line of attack in reference to this ad continued for the entire day via CNN etc. The level of poutrage was unbelievable – you’d have thought Romney was some kind of maligned, innocent victim. It seems to me that the NO1 outrage at the moment is the voting suppression story and that has not received one bit of the coverage it deserves. if the media bothered to do its job people would be out in the streets. But I am curious to see how long they continue to bang this particular drum for Romney.

On an unrelated point I loved watching Tweety’s segment with Bob Shrun – his unrestrained glee was something beautiful to behold.

HEADLINE: RNC-bound Randy Travis arrested naked, charged with drunk driving

// Randy Travis crashed his car and was found naked and intoxicated, officials said, a day after it was announced he would perform in Tampa for a nonpartisan benefit for veterans during the Republican National Convention. The country singer was charged with driving while intoxicated and threatening law officers. It was the second Texas arrest this year for Travis, who was cited in February for public intoxication. //

OMG, STEVE BENEN MAKES A GREAT POINT USING WOODY ALLEN (HILARIOUS)

    The emergence of McLuhan Moments

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————————————————-

Yes, Team Romney cited the work of several respected scholars, all of whom disagreed completely with how Romney’s campaign had characterized their work. In one case, the truth was the polar opposite — Team Romney, hoping to prove Obama’s Recovery Act didn’t work, cited the scholarship of University of Chicago economist Amir Sufi, who said the stimulus actually worked rather well.

Perhaps Romney should stick to citing dead people who can’t speak up, or secret sources who’ll tell him what he wants to hear. At this point, these McLuhan Moments are making him look pretty silly.

Hello Chips and TOD family. Chips, the photos from yesterday were just outstanding. Whoa our POTUS is just one fine man. Meanwhile, Mittens’ campaign is blowing up. I know we have to keep working hard to win this, but I have never laughed so hard in all my days. Mittens’ whole team is just a hot mess of incompetence.

And how funny to watch Joe and Mika and the rest of the Repubs in a panic over his losing campaign. Whole show this morning was 3-hrs of bashing the Priorities ad. Team Obama is on offense and just freakin brilliant. Love our President.

Does anyone remember how far ahead of the convention four years ago President Obama announced Joe Biden as his VP pick? I remember that the press were camping at the houses of various possibilities, and especially remember their ambushing Joe on his way to the dump to deposit lots of trash! He said definitely not, and about three days he was announced. He kept a good secret. I also remember the official announcement day was done beautifully, very upbeat and positive, with lots of good pictures and exciting speeches, and both Michelle and Jill introduced and greeting hundreds of people.
So, now can someone fill me in on the date and the place? I just remember the upbeat atmosphere and excitement.
Totally different from the Palin announcement. And, I doubt that the Romney announcement will have any excitement at all.

I think I remember Sarah Palin being picked the Friday before the GOP Convention as I spent that whole weekend researching her. I used to live in Juneau and had plenty of friends to contact about her and read up on newspaper articles and internet posts from politicians there. By the time the weekend was over I had more research than the campaign had plus stories the press never found.

SUDDENLY, ‘VALUES’ ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN JOBS & ECONOMY.

When ‘values,’ not the economy, takes center stage

    By Steve Benen

    —————————————

But the first thing I noticed after watching this ridiculous attack ad is what it didn’t mention: jobs and the economy. What we’re seeing this week appears to be a rather deliberate shift — for a year, Romney proudly boasted he was focused exclusively on economic issues, and wouldn’t allow himself to be thrown off-message by various “distractions.” Other candidates and politicians could chase the political story of the day, but all Mitt Romney cared about, he said, was getting people back to work and strengthening the recovery.

But he’s not saying that anymore. Now Romney wants to know which candidate shares your values. As job growth improves the recovery slowly gets stronger, the Republican suddenly believes trips to Israel, welfare, and contraception access are what really deserve attention.
