Poverty across the planet will be virtually eliminated by 2030, with a rising middle class of some two billion people pushing for more rights and demanding more resources, the chief of the top U.S. intelligence analysis shop said Saturday.

If current trends continue, the 1 billion people who live on less than a dollar a day now will drop to half that number in roughly two decades, Christoper Kojm said.

ā€œWe see the rise of the global middle class going from one to two billion,ā€ Kojm said, in a preview of the National Intelligence Council’s global forecast offered at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.

ā€œEven if some of the most dire predictions of economic upheavalā€ in the coming years prove accurate, the intelligence council still sees ā€œseveral hundred million people…entering the middle class,ā€ Kojm said.

…. and the tribute to the British National Health Service was sublime. Right wing heads exploded, which made it all the more delicious, the most ā€œLEFTIST!!ā€ Olympic ceremony I’ve ever seen. Magnificent!!

Chica, ABSOLUTELY!!!! I think that was the best “FU” Great Britain has ever given the US!! šŸ˜† šŸ˜† It was like they were saying, whether intentional or not, that they thumbed their noses at the US re: Universal Health Care.

The whole kids hospital scene was a tribute to their National Health System. Imagine that?!?! A country so proud of the care provided to their citizens that they brag about it to the world.

    • July 28, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Isonprize, I almost wept with joy at that section. It was an epic two fingers to the British Conservatives whose wet dream is to dismantle the NHS – and, I’d love to think, a message to the rest of the world’s right wing nut jobs who think poor folk deserve to die because they can’t afford healthcare. I need a poster of Danny Boyle for my bedroom wall!

Yes, I agree it was a message to the conservatives and also to the rest of the world including Willard Mitt Romney who has vowed to dismantle ObamaCare because he believes that PBO is trying to “Europeanize” our great country.

I wish Mitt’s book No Apologies would be reviewed in the British Isles where he mentioned England in a very negative way. It said it was a very small island that produced nothing the world wanted and would have been taken over by Hitler if it had not been an island. My interpretation of his words as I do not remember his words exactly. After writing that I wonder how he can ever run to be President and expect to be on good terms with our allie, Great Britain.

I can personally vouch for the NHS. My sis was diagnosed early on with breast cancer, had toi undergo mastectomy and chemo. Their support, especially, during chemo, was fantastic. She is home with us now for the holidays and she looks fantastic and is healthy, free of cancer. The entire treatment, which would have set her back by thousands of pounds, was free.

    • July 28, 2012 at 10:45 pm

Agreed on this. FOX (& all the other RWNJ media) have slandered and lied about the heath care system in the UK and other countries in their bid to keep the American people from demanding it for themselves. It’s outright insulting and they have severely pissed off many people in those countries with their lying insults about the nations that provide this security for their people.
It’s a basic right of a civilized society and that’s the way the majority of the modern world sees it. Keep fighting for this because it’s a matter of basic human dignity.

I love our Canadian healthcare system. It’s a living thing so it has to be adjusted, consolidated, improved as we go along. That’s how every successful system works — it’s not perfect but then it was designed by humans.

By the way, when we had a “Greatest Canadian” poll up here the winner was Tommy Douglas, the man who started universal coverage in Canada. He was a socialist, too.

This article outlines Danny Boyle’s (producer of Slumdog Millionaires) thoughts behind the Olympic Opening Ceremony. EXCELLENT READ!!!

Opening ceremony a celebration — of protest and dissent

      http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/olympics/2012/writers/alexander_wolff/07/27/london-opening-ceremonies/index.html

      • July 28, 2012 at 9:33 pm

I read that earlier – definitely gives a cheeky spin to all the performances. I’ve been watching the ceremony again (unfortunately, with the bonehead commentary from NBC), and now I have the background to some of the symbolism.

I used to live in London, and the show, “Eastenders” was one of my favourite shows. I was hooked – obsessed! And in the opening video for the Olympics, they show the map of East London, and the image changes slightly to the same one they show on the show, and you can hear faintly the very famous drum sequence for the show’s opening. I loved it! Almost missed it.

        • July 29, 2012 at 12:33 am

Me too theo. I lived and studied in the east end for years. I especially appreciated the Health Care tribute, the war memorial as my hubby is a British veteran and loved the Eastenders reference.

      • July 28, 2012 at 10:54 pm

I love these lines from the article:

“He gave us a chance to celebrate protest and dissent…………
Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire, spent almost four times less money and deployed roughly one-tenth as many people. But he outstripped the previous Olympic host city by flaunting what the Chinese actively suppressed.”

        Thx, isonprize! That was Fantastic!

The Olympics, of course, have a long and troubling history with protest and dissent. The Games have mostly been hostile to them. Showing in other parts of London right now are two productions of a much more modest scale, each of which speaks to this. One is a documentary called Salute, which tells not only of black Americans Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who were banned from the Olympic movement for raising fists on the podium at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, but also of the white Australian silver medalist, Peter Norman, who got similar treatment for wearing a badge, in solidarity with Smith and Carlos, because he objected to the treatment of Aborigines in his own country. (Smith and Carlos served as pallbearers at Norman’s funeral in 2006.)”

        I love learning about this.

I remember the 1968 Olympics. I couldn’t believe the foaming-at-the-mouth hysteria over a gesture. It was just like Mohammed Ali when he refused to be drafted.

    • July 28, 2012 at 9:30 pm

I wonder what happened. I heard a report yesterday that they are so serious about this stuff, that the government takes the kids from their homes to special schools so they can just focus on their sport, citing that it is a service to the country and they’re better off. Many of the kids are the only kids in the family. I hope they pull it together. All the kids work so hard to get to the Olympics, that it’s a shame to lose badly. Better to lose because someone was better than you, not because you fell apart.

One of their key members got seriously injured and was replaced by a substitute (who wasn’t nearly as good) and that seemed to have had a negative impact on the team overall.

Well, that’s communism for you – it might not work as an economic theory, but *this* story sounds familiar to me. I had a friend in the former German Democratic Republic who was in their “olympic” school system (can’t remember off-hand why he didn’t make it).

We all do what we can, but I have brought others into the fold to work for our President…gives me some happiness to know that if I can’t do it as much as I have been, others are stepping up to fill in the space that I can’t fill. Hey guys. Brought this over from the other lthread:

my cousin and I were going downtown (montego bay, Jamaica) and our taxi driver pointed out two men walking in the opposite direction of where we were driving. The taxi driver goes: ā€œsee two of those strange guys who love to walk. they go to that weird church that nobody knows about.ā€ one guy was black, the other was white, both were wearing glasses, ties, short sleeved white shirts and black dress pants. they wore backpacks and had their umbrellas strapped to them. the taxi driver went on to say: ā€œthey’re so strange. they walk everywhere!ā€ I said: ā€œare they mormons?ā€ he said ā€œwhat?ā€ I said do they go to the LDS church? and he said he didn’t know, but he always sees a lot of them walking everywhere. i just asked my aunt about it and she said they were mormons and that they are now huge here. she said they started showing up about 10 years ago!!!! wtf?!!!! Mormons are taking over Jamaica!!!! My aunt says that when they go trying to recruit people, they go into the slums and volunteer to help others like washing their clothes, etc. that they do anything they can to draw people into their church. she says they have a big church close to where my family lives. she said she wanted to go visit the church to see what it’s about because she keeps hearing people say that they are devil worshipers( she’s a deacon- almost pastor in our family church– I told her that some people in America think they are a cult. I told her they might not let her in, that in America, they only allow Mormons in their church. then i showed her pictures of the LDS churches. she was horrified! she said: ā€œthey need elevators to reach the tops of those buildings!!ā€ ha! oy!!! why are mormons in Jamaica?

    • July 28, 2012 at 11:20 pm

      Hi Lisalovesobama,
I have to tell you the same thoughts crossed my mind a few days ago.

I was exiting a small Plaza when i saw two of them and I started talking to myself aloud in the car ” what you all want with us? this country is almost 90 percent Black people and the rest are East Indians, Chinese, Cacausian and a variety of mixtures of all these different races. You dont like us so what do you want here?”

Then I started laughing because I became aware that I was talking to myself and if anyone saw me they may just have me carted off to the Asylum.

I did however make a mental note to ask what they are doing here. You know if it was not for TOD I would just ignore them as I have done for the past few years. I personally have been seeing them since 2005.

      July 29, 2012 at 7:29 am

Lisa, they are there. I lived in Ochio Rios for seven years. Came back here in 09. I used to see them going to the temple or church with children from the so called ghetto part of Ocho Rios and wonder why people would entrust their children to strangers. They walk in twos like you said.

My landlord was away in the States and asked me to take care of the building and every morning they’d knock on the gate to ask me if there were any vacancies and try to recruit me.

They spend a lot of time doing so called chariity work but we Jamaicans will take the charity and don’t set foot inside the churches, so good luck with that.

Tthere is a big temple at the corner of 128th and Lenox in Harlem. I am tempted to go take a look if I can get in. It does say Viisitors welcome. I wonder how far inside I would get? Maybe not very far because as you know we weren’t considered worthy until 1974 when they almost lozt their tax exempt status.

You soon come back? Hurry up and come!

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has been forced to scrap a $50,000 per plate fundraiser scheduled to take place during his visit to Jerusalem because the date coincided with a solemn Jewish day of mourning.

The fundraiser, which was supposed to be a “a small meeting, but a big fund-raiser,” according to a source quoted in the Jerusalem Post on Wednesday, was set to take place on July 29, amid the Romney campaign’s first foreign policy tour.

But July 29 is also Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of fasting in some traditions of the religion, in which catastrophic events like the destruction of the First and Second Temples and the Holocaust are mourned.

I see the London Olympics organizers are launching an investigation into the empty seats at all the sporting events. The local people have been complaining that they were unable to get tickets and now they see on TV that the events aren’t even half full. I noticed that today also—-every time I checked, the event looked like it was barely 1/3 full. One official said he believes the seats are “accredited, belonging to sponsors” who didn’t show up. So it looks like corporate bought chunks of stadiums and then no one used the tickets. They are going to try to remedy this in some way so the events are full, more exciting for the athletes and the viewing audience.

What was it Romney said at that fundraiser in Montana after speaking at the NAACP? If “THEY” want to continue to get free stuff from the government, then vote for the other guy. But remember nothing is free. I think that was how Mitt said it to his all white fundraisers in Montana. So what he was saying if we blacks want to continue to sit around and get free stuff from the government, don’t vote for him. As if there isn’t any black folks who gets up every morning and go to work.

The only thing sustaining Mitt Romney is the mainstream media’s complicity in Mitt’s lies. All the attacks Romney levels against the President are based on lies. He has runaway from his record as the Governor of Massachusetts. He never offers concrete proposals about what he plans to do as President. And, of course, Mitt refuses to come clean about his taxes and his off-shore financial dealings. If Mitt was a Democratic candidate the U.S. media would have made sure that he was finished by now. They would be hounding him every chance they get.

this really sums it up–myth is now afraid to mention anything in his life for fear of the negative images (love my dog=put him on the car roof; love my family=push my kids faces into plates of food; love my wife=distance myself from her horse at the olympics; love my money=let’s not talk about the money, etc). he has nothing to say on the issues, either, and so he stands there an empty suit, just twisting in the political winds. no wonder he wanted to leave the county. he’s probably applying for resident’s visas everywhere he goes.

Just so we’re all clear who they work for…http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/07/28/house-gop-trying-to-fast-track-tax-cut-bill-for-wealthy-and-corporations/

Republicans in the House have responded with legislation that calls for their own version of ā€œtax reform,ā€ a set of regulations that would shift the tax burden down the income ladder while giving millionaires an average of $187,000 in tax cuts in 2014.

The Republican changes would encourage companies to invest overseas, reorganize tax brackets, reduce taxes on corporations and restrict them to a permanent rate of 25 percent or less. Other measures in the bill, which are also included in Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (R)’s proposed budget plan, would increase taxes on families making less than $200,000 a year and repeal tax credits for low-income Americans signed into law by President Obama.

Republicans hope to bring the new bill to a vote this week.

Amazing! Yet they will bombard low information poor and middle class voters with ads that accuse the President for raising their taxes. The media will still on the sidelines without letting the public which side is telling the TRUTH!

Britons evaded Ā£200m in tax’ using HSBC-owned Swiss bank
Trade minister who headed banking division is facing further pressure

the sums allegedly evaded by Britons using HSBC’s Swiss bank are massive. HMRC told the Bureau of Investigative Journalism “the early indications are that the amounts are significant”.

The HMRC in 2010 received data smuggled out of HSBC by a former bank IT worker, now under arrest in Spain and facing possible extradition to Switzerland, that contained details of 6,000 UK-linked individuals, companies and trusts. Two senior tax investigators who both worked at HMRC told the bureau the average amount evaded in the 6,000 accounts is likely to range between £33,000 and £50,000. Three weeks ago, HMRC secured its first high profile conviction from the HSBC Swiss bank data. Property developer Michael Shanly, estimated to be worth £132m, admitted evading £430,000 in inheritance tax.

    I see a pattern here…

Yet the Republican party is poised to nominate a candidate who may have evaded his tax obligations by hiding his money in Swiss banks and other off-shore accounts. This is the same man whose slogan is: “I Believe in America.”

I looked at the Yahoo article on Mittens visit to Israel. Even on that site of poison comments they are not liking Mitt. He’s supposed to be giving a “big speech” in Israel. Can’t wait.

You see? He wants to start WWIII?-

Mitt Romney would stand by Israel if the country launches a unilateral attack on Iran to stop Tehran from building nuclear weapons, a top adviser to the presidential candidate said Sunday.
