(NO spoilers) Watching them now LIVE — Like all openings, spec tack u lar. Amazing mixture of history and modern themes. The Queen’s arrival is effing hilarious. She has quite the sense of humour. Lots of music. Still don’t know who will light the flame. Sentiment is for Bradley Wiggins who just won the Tour de France a week ago — but who knows. You will have a ball.

I have to admit that until twit robme gobbed off about us not being prepared I hadn’t given the games much thought apart from seeing the Olympic torch relay pass my son’s school, but now I am making a point of watching as much as I can.

Linda, I don’t know what to say about Democrats like Diane Feinstein. They are traitors. She knew by opening her dam mouth the Romney camp would use what she said. But yet she open it anyway with no proof who was leaking anything. She has been around long enough, she knew better. Freaking old witch.

I read the Wonkette piece about this leaker of Valerie Plame’s job. It’s a good piece and the first time I saw what the leaker looked like. I recommend the oftentimes witty comments. They could be collected and published, sound like a long list of tweets.

The queen was never tall but she’s become, over the years, inevitably shorter. I love the way Michelle smiles down on her. A perfect, respectful attitude. It’s no wonder the queen truly likes her.

      July 27, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Hey Hope44 I brought your comment over. It’s a very nice summary. 🙂

Hi TOD…My daughter had the most wonderful experience and surprise a few weeks ago.
She had just graduated college in May and came home and started job hunting. She got a temporary
3 week job back in DC ( where she went to college). She was a camp counselor/mentor….this is her story.
As she pulls up to the camp her supervisor urgently texts her to come to the office immediately…of course she thought
she had done something wrong. Then the supervisor said in the sternest of voices …You have to sign a confidentiality
agreement now cause Sasha will be coming to our camp for a week. Well she got all excited, after the shock wore off
and the first thing she said she blurted out was “Can I tell my Mom”. The answer of course was a firm NO.

I cracked up when she told me her reaction because she is normally so mature and balanced…but she knows
what an Obamamama I am so that was her reflexive response. She honored the agreement however so it was
not until she came home a week ago that I got all the stories…

She had the honor of meeting our First Lady who came to the kids performance at the end of the week.
She kept saying ,Mom, Michelle is soooo beautiful in person and so down to earth and nice to all of us. It was a small
group so she was able to talk with the FL and they took group pictures, which finally convinced me…because it all seemed
too good to be true. Also the SS were nice and friendly but always on the job. Got a lot of other little stories but will
      keep it brief 🙂

What a great experience to have as her first job out of college! I hope her future will be equally blessed. Just thought
i’d share with my TOD family especially since we are now witnessing this magnificent First Lady in action on the world stage.

PA voting officials are steaming mad!! http://www.philly.com/philly/news/politics/elections/20120727_Delco_election_official_vows_to_defy_ID_law.html

Even as the fate of Pennsylvania’s new voter-identification law plays out in a Harrisburg courtroom, an election official in Delaware County is vowing not to enforce it.

Christopher L. Broach, a Democratic inspector of elections in the tiny borough of Colwyn, said he would not ask voters to prove who they are on Election Day.

“To ask me to enforce something that violates civil rights is ludicrous and absolutely something I am not willing to do,” Broach said Thursday in an interview.

    snip/

Though Broach is the only official publicly taking such a stance, Philadelphia’s nonpartisan Committee of Seventy received a call from a Pittsburgh poll worker saying he, too, plans not to demand photo ID from voters he knows. The law has set off defiant talk among voters as well, with a few vowing to vote without the required forms of photo ID.

“If I get turned away from the polling place,” said Democrat Jean Yetter, 65, of East Stroudsburg, “I will never vote again.”

The talk isn’t all from Democrats. In Radnor Township, Jane Golas, a Republican inspector of elections, said she wondered how she could ask anyone for identification when she will have to count ballots of absentee voters who are not held to the same standards.

“This is a move by people to suppress the vote in the city of Philadelphia,” Golas said. “We never had an issue with people coming in to fraudulently vote.”

    • July 27, 2012 at 3:39 pm

“In Radnor Township, Jane Golas, a Republican inspector of elections, said she wondered how she could ask anyone for identification when she will have to count ballots of absentee voters who are not held to the same standards.” Exactly!

“If I get turned away from the polling place,” said Democrat Jean Yetter, 65, of East Stroudsburg, “I will never vote again.” That is rather a stupid response, Ms. Yetter. Isn’t that giving Rethugs what they want? If you get turned away, raise hell about it!

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic would like for Mitt Romney to mind his own business.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney attacked President Barack Obama’s administration this week for abandoning Poland and the Czech Republic by altering plans for an American missile defense system in Europe.

But the Slovak foreign minister, in Washington this week for meetings with U.S. officials, said Thursday that Europe has fully embraced the new approach to missile defense and said Mr. Romney was dredging up settled debates.

“People have moved on,” said Miroslav Lajcak, the minister of foreign affairs and deputy prime minister, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “We are in a different situation now. We are discussing a different project. I see no reason to revisit discussions from three years back.”

And here’s the key to Mitt – ‘I see no reason to revisit discussions from three years back.’ He is woefully out of date in his awareness of world issues, in his ideas, and in his ‘planning’. I can so see why he’d be comfortable with a group that wants to take America BACK, that way he wouldn’t have to expend time or energy to update himself.

    • July 27, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Oh goodness. I’m starting to feel bad for enjoying this so much. If this is the mess he’s making with his words only, and no power, then what disaster will ensue if he ever gets to be the most powerful man in the world? It really shines a light on how brilliantly President Obama has navigated the power he has, and kept his ego in check – because to have that much power, and yet remain humble – that takes a special person. Last week, we saw him take an older lady’s hand and tell her not to be nervous to ask questions of politicians, because she’s his boss. He’s the most powerful man in the world, and yet, he takes his responsibility for every person whom he serves very seriously. What a remarkable man.

Thank you so much, theo67 for highlighting this. This shows President Obama fully understands the meaning of democracy from which he derives his position of power. In a democracy, the people, and not the ruler, are sovereign.

A HUGE point needs to be made about this!

    http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/07/27/596751/gdp-jobs-act/

New data released today shows that the U.S. economy grew by 1.5 percent last quarter, following a revised increase of 2 percent in the first quarter. Republicans, of course, leaped on the middling number, with Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) calling it “a troubling sign for the future of our economy.”
But GOP’ers neglect to mention that they repeatedly filibustered President Obama’s American Jobs Act in the Senate, after several independent economic analysts estimated that the bill would boost GDP by one to three percent.

    GALLUP busted!! And lameass excuse-

By DONOVAN SLACK | 7/27/12 3:13 PM EDT
A highly touted Gallup poll released Thursday suggested that business owners had soured on President Obama with their approval of him dropping 6 percent in just three months.

The poll concluded second-quarter approval had fallen to 35 percent from first-quarter approval of 41 percent.

But Gallup did not take into account party affiliation in its samples, and according to data provided to POLITICO by the polling organization, more Republicans and fewer Democrats were surveyed for the second quarter results.

The change — 4 percent more GOP business owners and 2 percent fewer Democratic owners — would seem to cancel out the entire difference in approval. In any case, it certainly puts any difference well within the margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Gallup told POLITICO that it sees party affiliation as an attitude and not a demographic and therefore doesn’t take it into account when drawing its conclusions.

      What a crock of do-do!

“Gallup told POLITICO that it sees party affiliation as an attitude and not a demographic and therefore doesn’t take it into account when drawing its conclusions.” – then why the hell bother to poll anyone? They might as well just draw their own conclusion and post it as bible.

      Geesh!!!

Gallup explanation for messing with Party ID? Attitude? Attitude???

    • 157 Virginia
      July 27, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I don’t believe that. I’m POSITIVE that Gallup just like all other polling entities, uses party affiliation for some of its polls. How could they claim to be a reputable political predictor, WITHOUT using party affiliation for some polls. I’m going to check out Gallup now, and prove they are lying.

    • 158 Virginia
      July 27, 2012 at 5:13 pm

I’m back from checking Gallup. They just used party affiliation to prove that Republicans are more “enthusiastic” about voting this year than Democrats are.

Now, besides the fact that they DO use party affiliation as a demographic, and not just as an “attitude”, how do they “measure” the amount of enthusiasm one group has over another? And, doesn’t enthusiasm grow and wane in some people from day to day, and in some cases minute to minute?? How can they measure that, and not peoples party affiliation??
In fact, in many states, party affiliation is NOT an attitude, because you have to REGISTER in one party or another, so that’s where you are counted and you Have to vote with them..

W.H.: ’12 deficit is $116 billion less than expected
By JENNIFER EPSTEIN | 7/27/12 2:00 PM EDT
The Obama administration has lowered its estimate of the size of the budget deficit for fiscal 2012 by $116 billion, the Office of Management and Budget said in its Mid-Session Review to Congress, released Friday afternoon.

The administration now projects the deficit for the year to be $1.211 trillion, down from the $1.327 trillion estimate it made in February — 7.8 percent of the gross domestic product, down from the 8.5 percent projected in February.

Some on the right have criticized the Obama administration for being slow to release its budgets and supporting documents, including the Mid-Session Review. Though it is being released nearly two weeks after its mid-July deadline, the review is still coming out far earlier than last year’s, which was released on Sept. 1.

“Congress and the American people have never had greater need for concrete budget proposals, and the president should seize this as an opportunity to provide them,” Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) said in a statement a few days before the deadline. “Given the historic depth of [the country’s] financial challenges, the administration must submit their budget update on time and in the manner the law requires. Failure to do so would only further damage the president’s credibility on the great challenge confronting our nation.”

The review shows projections of the federal deficit for the next decade falling slightly, by a total of $240 billion over those 10 years. The lower estimate is based on lower projected spending on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and net interest.

    • July 27, 2012 at 4:29 pm

NPR reported it as being higher than estimated, and only said that the deficit will have been above $1 trillion for all four years of PBO’s presidency, without showing that he’s actually reduced the deficit – without any help from the deficit hawks – and paid back the money he borrowed to rescue the economy.

The Senator is in such a hurry to see the budget, but has absolutely no intention of passing them. They just want a bludgeon to use to complain about defense cuts. It’s unconscionable the way these Republicans treat the American public.

“Jen Rubin is sad today. Just a few days ago she was crowing, “The Obama campaign can’t bear the thought that the well-traveled Mitt Romney will make a nice impression on his overseas tour” — that the foreigns would instantly fall in love with Romney, a born diplomat. Unfortunately, within his first day or two of his arrival in our Special Friend country of England, Romney managed to insult the nation badly enough to earn a public rebuke from the conservative Prime Minister, the Mayor of London, and every newspaper and television station in the United Kingdom. ”

“When asked why Romney’s camp expected a sneak attack from the Obama campaign, the advisor said their guard was up because of “how they’ve conducted themselves in the past.”

The Obama campaign, meanwhile, says they’ve got no surprises coming, accusing the Romney campaign of paranoia.

“We’ve already announced what we’re doing this weekend, which is holding more than 4,700 organizational events across the nation mobilizing voters 100 days out from the election,” said campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. “This is dog-wagging that would make David Mamet blush – a campaign reacting to a rumor they invented to try to pivot from their diplodisaster”

I forgot which show I was watching this morning but on one of the msm programs the conversation was about about Romney’s schedule for preparing for the November elections. They broke it down to phases.

Phase I: The first phase was to win the nomination and so it looks like he did that.
Phase II: The next phase was to unite the party. That is still a work in progress but he is getting there.
Phase III: This is where he should be today and his focus is supposed to be on defining himself to voters BUT the assessment was that Pres Obama removed that option and was doing the job of defining Romney. Because of PO Romney is still stuck at having to explain away his refusal for anyone to look at his tax returns, BAIN which is now the thorn in his side and today he has a bigger mess because of his decision to step out to present himself on the world stage as the better choice to the Global community and to voters because of his Anglo-Saxon heritage which we all know ended up a complete disaster.

All that for them to say, this isn’t going to have long term negative effects for Romney and he can still pull this off.

    • July 27, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Romney doesn’t have anything left but the hardcore base. He can’t move to the middle because he’ll those 27%ers. He’s a complete mess and I think it shows. He looks terrible in all the photos I’ve seen. He’s not aging well. I think that’s how you look when you’ve lived a lie all your life.

    • July 27, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Phase I is still in question. Phase II will still oust him out of office in 2016, if he pulls of the theft of the presidency (we already heard Christie chomping at the bit – no pun intended). As for Phase III, so true.

Is it the one that states that Obama tried? It’s okay to make a change.

If it is, don’t discount it. That add is psychologically powerful, and subtle. That kind of ad works at a level people do not realize, do not understand. There was major research behind that ad. It aims at the reptilian and old-mammalian parts of the human brain.

      • 308 hopefruit2
        July 27, 2012 at 6:32 pm

It’s a racist ad. The ad basically says in not so many words that the Black guy is “nice” but not smart enough to manage the economy (as we know to be true about Black people and have always suspected about this guy). But It’s okay to have confidence in and vote for the white guy despite no evidence of his ability to strengthen the economy, and still not be thought of as a racist.

There’s nothing subtle about that kind of racism no matter how it’s packaged, and which is what the GOP/RNC have relied on for decades to help them win elections.

Tweety, David Corn, and Ron Reagan, Jr. just had a very serious discussion on the blatant lies that the Mitt the Twit campaign is running in its ads and the fact that very few in the MSM are calling them out on it. This is something that is going to increase in his campaign and must be addressed. It took the Brits two days to figure out Willard and 50% of Americans still have not.

Also had an event somewhere in our state about the “didn’t build it” business. Seemed to be headed by a State Senator. Was very fair and balanced and felt to me that it favored President Obama–but I am biased. None of the snide, cynical stuff you get nationally. Refreshing.

“Visibility equals equality in many ways, and by supporting the call for a woman moderator, both presidential campaigns and the Commission can send a strong message that they value the input and wisdom of women,” Tsemberis said in a news release.

A woman hasn’t moderated a debate between presidential candidates since 1992, the year that was proclaimed the year of the woman.’

‘On the petition’s Web site, possible moderators include Christiane Amanpour, Rachel Maddow, Katie Couric, Leslie Stahl, Diane Sawyer and Ifill. The Web site points out that the commission, which has 17 members, includes only three women.’

All the heat that the President took and is taking from the media, birthers and the islamophobes should not come as a surprise. Every time an African-American person has broken into an area of our national life previously tacitly reserved for “white only”, s/he has had to endure vilification and slander. Rosa Parks did when she sat at the front of the bus. Jackie Robinson did when he dared to play major-league baseball. The lunch-counter protesters did when they sat in the whites-only section. James Meredith did when he dared to enroll and attend Ole Miss. Etc., etc., etc. After we have elected our 5th or 6th African-American President — not in my lifetime — race will no longer matter, and the term “White House” will only refer to the Executive Mansion’s exterior paint pigment. Same is true of religion: someday it won’t matter. But until then, we will have to endure the thinly — at times, not very thinly — veiled racist rants of the bigots and islamophobes to whom it does. The media is the one who is fuming the veil rants about Obama, they can put a stop to this but will not for greed and some racism.

        • July 27, 2012 at 8:54 pm

You note what is important about it. We need to make the attempt to understand it not from our own consciousness, but from the various levels and states of the spectrum of consciousness. Just as when we are speaking about politics to others we must speak to their level and state of consciousness, not from our own. If we speak from our own, we are much more likely to trigger their own defensiveness and that is likely to accomplish the opposite of what we intend.

Liberals are often more educated than conservatives, but we are less likely to use our knowledge of how the human brain and society actually operate. Partly that is because we tend to think rationally and expect others to do so as well. But politics is much more emotional than rational. We often hesitate to “manipulate” others because we think that is unfair and indecent. So we leave the “selling” of politics to the conservatives. And they hire the best and brightest of psychologists and sociologists in their endeavors. They have very skillfully utilized what we’ve learned about neuroscience in their ads for 30 years.

I really enjoyed Paul McCartney’s “Hey Jude” after many, many decades and laughed at myself for it, because when I kept hearing The Beatles’ music back when it was playing everywhere, on everything, I thought it was the most repetitious cliche-ridden stuff I ever heard. Now, after decades of rock, hard and soft, banging and clanging and hooting and plain hollering, beating my ears into the earth, The Beatles’ stuff really sounds like MUSIC! It’s what happens, I guess, with 82 years’ worth of listening when I should have been stopping up my ears.

However, I do like a couple of Eminem’s songs, especially if I can’t quite make out the lyrics. I certainly love Bruce Springsteen’s songs, notably,”We Take Care of Our Own,” and many other new songs by others. Perhaps they’re changing a little? Or perhaps *I’m* changing a little.

Nice write up of Flotus Olympic style

FIRST LADY OF STYLE: MICHELLE OBAMA WEARS U.S. LABEL

Michelle Obama remained true to her patriotic fashion theme today in a dazzling white top and skirt for this evening’s reception at Buckingham Palace.

The U.S. First Lady, who has stuck to a palette of red, white and blue since she arrived in London this morning, opted for an ensemble from the resort 2013 collection of American label J Mendel.

It was a strong choice that saw her hold her own against the UK’s reigning fashion princess, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Her top, which was almost armour-like in style, was embroidered in shimmering silver. The cap sleeves showed off those toned arms, while the high neckline kept the look demure.

The lightweight fabric of the sharply-pleated skirt made for a soft contrast, while the silver court shoes added polish, and co-ordinated with the look perfectly.

The slow growth reported for the second quarter is enough to allow President Barack Obama an edge in his re-election bid, according to a forecasting model based on the economy and polling data.

The U.S. economy grew at a 1.5 percent annual rate from April through June, in line with forecasts and slowing from a revised 2.0 percent rate during the first three months of the year, the Commerce Department reported today.

“It puts Obama just barely above the break-even point,” said Alan Abramowitz, a political science professor at Emory University in Atlanta and developer of the forecasting model. “Mainly it tells me we’re heading to a very close election and Obama is a slight favorite.”

Abramowitz said today his model projects Obama will receive 50.5 percent of the popular vote in November and has a two- thirds probability of winning. The model doesn’t project the Electoral College outcome, and it is possible to win the popular vote without an electoral-vote victory, as occurred in the 2000 contest between Al Gore and George W. Bush.

He must have parked himself in front of the HD Screen with popcorn, drinks and other snacks for a night of viewing and tweeting. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Could you ever, in a gazillion years, see any other First Lady of the United States doing ANY OF THESE THINGS? The tug of war? letting the lady weightlifter pick her up? Letting the kids just crawl all over her?

Wow, she is so real, so down to earth.

Do you have a link for the slideshow? If that’s true, then they did this on purpose and need to be called out. This is blatantly disrespectful and not remotely funny or trivial.

Good evening everyone. I just got polled for the first time (on my cell phone). Most of the questions were about climate change. They also asked if I was better off financially than last year. No direct question about PBO, but they asked for my party affiliation and my age.
