I’m curious, what internet browser do you use? I use firefox, and if you are talking about the small grey box that looks like a ‘cartoon caption’ that turns orange if someone responds to a comment that you’ve made, it’s still on my screen.

No, ison, I use safari, on ipad2. Last week a box arrived on the screen, at a random time of day, inviting me to ‘follow’ TOD by entering my email. Then I could receive notice of new posts via email. I ignored it for a couple days, it was right on the face of the new thread, partly covering the photos at the top of the thread. Couldn’t move it, couldn’t cut it, couldnt drag it off, nothing. Then I filled it in, tho I have been receiving new posts notification by email for a long long time, hoping the box would leave my screen. Sent chips a couple screen capture shots, then waited patiently (didn’t I Chips?). And now it is gone, but was still there this morning. I don’t miss it, I am very pleased to have it off the screen.

“MONDAY, JULY 23, UPDATE: HE GOT HELP. In the Mitt Romney campaign web and television ads that received national attention last week, a blunt Jack Gilchrist of Gilchrist Metal Fabricating in Hudson tells President Barack Obama that he, his father and his son _ and not the government _ built his company.

But as it turns out, Gilchrist did receive some government help for his business, albeit a long time ago.

In 1999, Gilchrist Metal received $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds issued by the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority “to set up a second manufacturing plant and purchase equipment to produce high definition television broadcasting equipment,” according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report at the time.

Someone posted this on the other thread….

I sent the article to Gilchrist Metal Fabricating and told them SHAME ON YOU !

    • July 23, 2012 at 5:03 pm

And on top of that, they of course benefited from public education, local police and fire, national highways, air traffic controllers, a military that keeps America safe, and on and on. But of course, they built it all by their little selves. SHAME indeed!

      July 23, 2012 at 5:09 pm

oh that? THAT? That $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds? Oh, that’s not government help! That’s just money from New Hampshire citizens who paid their taxes to support local New Hampshire companies.

I am so livid at Chuck Todd I cannot even see straight!

See his tweet, sent at 4:18 pm EDT today:

@ChristiMTL tweeted yesterday about his weekend lies equating PBO’s “Firms” ad to Swiftboating (as guest host for Chris Matthews show). I record this program on Sunday mornings (airs at 5:30 am PDT here in Los Angeles area) and watched it last night.

It was worse than lying. He actually sneeringly called PBO’s ad “nasty” in a very nasty way. And zero pushback from his guests (WaPo David Ignatius/Kathleen Parker, CNN Gloria Borger, Dan Rather).

Who in their right mind could think of this ad as “nasty?” An unedited clip of Romney with PBO campaign info, ending with Romney’s the problem, not the solution.

You can disagree with PBO, but to sneeringly call this ad nasty, and then to label “The Choice” ad as negative in tone?!?!?! NBC has to be called out on how unprofessionally partisan this creep Todd is. I am shaking with anger right now.

It appears that Chuck Todd has assigned himself the new job of attacking the Obama Campaign on the slightest, most trivial issues. This is a great way to keep him occupied, thereby preventing him from actually doing the real work of a journalist in investigating Mitt Romney’s abuses as MA governor and CEO of Bain Capital, along with his current secrecy and failure to disclose key information from his tax returns.

I remember back in the very, very early days of the 08 campaign. In 2007 when Tim Russert was the political director of NBC news. I know some of you don’t like Russert, or didn’t, but trust me, he was a democrat AND wanted to see PBO win in 08. I remember watching Chuckie idolize Russert. On the air. I remember the day Russert died, Chuckie sobbed on the air like a baby. I always thought Chuckie was a D, until just very recently. One day on Tweety’s show, talking about the R’s, he was so excited, he said “our party”. I also noticed that since Comcast took over NBC/Universal, they have turned right, on all shows. I have really noticed this on Nightly News with Brian Williams. They are ALL puppets of their corporate masters now. And the corporate masters don’t like the black man in the WH! Period.

Creepy. I wonder if the #Mittbots are replacing media people with large pods ala “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

Agree with you that Chuck didn’t seem as biased before.

But now, something’s changed and he openly admits that the president calmly expressing himself sets a “negative” tone.

Infuriatingly, the media sheep (especially ComCast) will not call Todd out on this, and EVERYTHING that PBO and staff do, from now until election, will be sneered at or called “nasty” or “negative.”

Media already fully equates MSNBC as Fox’s liberal equivalent, which is a bald-faced lie, but is accepted and dispensed throughout the MSM as gospel truth.

He always reminds me of a kid who was bullied in middle school and decided when he got all growed up he would get even with the most popular kids by using the media to even the score. Chuckie doesn’t if the person he is smearing never did anything to him. He’s just that low.

I really like this ad. There is something about looking the American public in the eye and telling them what you think about policy. I think this ad has multiple meanings. First, it comes across as sincere and genuine. Second, it plays on the fact that Mitt has no plan other than to boost the wealthy and third it plays to that notion that the President spoke about doing better at bringing the public along with him on policy. Telling the story. People like to be treated as adults so when you look me in the eye and speak to me you reveal something about yourself.

Mitt can’t manufacture the “IT” that PBO has on display here and I think the campaign knew that which is why they did this ad now rather than in October. 😉

    Good Job O’Campaign!

I can’t see the ad until I get home (limited access at work), but from what people are saying, I’m really happy the campaign is taking the intimate approach. The President is at his most awesome when he’s just given a chance to connect to people one-on-one – although, he does the massive crowds really well, too. But the GOP can manufacture screaming, applauding crowds. But, they can’t manufacture the sincerity of President Obama’s connection to individual people. He looks into their eyes, he relates to their lives, he cares about them – each one. This is why children look him right in the eye – even babies. He actually sees them, as individuals. Not just as votes to get him into the White House.

I really hope that in addition to reaching scores of people with the large crowds, that the campaign is able to build in more of the intimate gatherings. Small town halls, with more Q&A, like the Facebook one. More backyard town halls. Stuff like that. I think it really connects with more people, and they’re also more enjoyable to watch. And it will limit the people screaming inappropriately during his speeches.

Agree, Donna Dem, but Chuck Todd thinks this is a negative ad. (see upthread)

NBC and MSNBC treat Chuck Todd as if he were God’s gift to the news business. All that praise (and monetary compensation, no doubt) has gone to his head and he is now a super-arrogant jerk.

Chuck Todd honestly believes that if the President expresses his policy position, that’s a “negative” tone ad. Todd believes that PBO doesn’t have the right to clearly state his position.

If someone can convince me he’s not a racist, I’m willing to listen.

This is from that hack Halperin (so I’m not linking it), but the lovely words by FLOTUS need to be read.

“FLOTUS on the horror in Aurora”

“I just wanted to take a moment before we got started because I just want to say how heartbroken that Barack and I are about the tragic shooting that took place in Aurora, Colorado on Friday and I would be remiss to mention that the incident. Barack and I, we have seen people, and so have people around this country, we’ve seen people across this country come together as one American family to mourn victims of this devastating event and to support their friends and families and loved ones and I know that we’ll continue that support in the difficult time ahead. So, I know that we are all, even as we enter the Olympics, this wonderful occasion, I know that we are all holding the people of Aurora in our hearts and our prayers.”

…The call also contains one of the most fantastic pushbacks of the cycle. In response to the frequent Republican complaint that Obama has not been to Israel as president, the Obamans pointed out that Ronald Reagan never went in his two terms in the Oval Office, a key fact unknown to me and many other reporters.

    Great News!

HEADLINE: Justice Department Investigates Pennsylvania Voter ID Law

// The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division has launched a formal investigation into whether Pennsylvania’s voter ID law discriminates against minorities, TPM has learned.

In a letter sent to Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele on Monday, DOJ requested state data on registered voters as well as the state’s list of individuals with driver’s licenses and ID cards. Additionally, DOJ requested information on the state’s efforts to educate voters about the new law as well as documents and records supporting a March 14 statement from Gov. Tom Corbett (R) which claimed “99 percent of Pennsylvania’s already have acceptable photo IDs.”

Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez requested Pennsylvania send the information to federal authorities within 30 days. //

So, DOJ is investigating; at the state level, Mrs. Applewhite’s case goes to court on Thursday; folks are proactively educating family and friends; overall OUTSTANDING!

The PA House Democratic Caucus has produced a Voter Identification Education Guide. The 21 page booklet was written for the VOTER in easy to understand language; additionally there is an appendix containing any of the forms a person may need in order to obtain official docs or the ID. If your state Rep is a Dem, call them for the guide (they are available by the box load). If like me, you are rep’ed by a rethug, call a Dem reps office. A Dem rep, 10 miles from my district provided me with a box of 50. We are holding a Voter ID workshop on Monday, Jul 30th, and taking folks to PennDot on Thursday, Aug 2nd.

Also, I highly recommend that if you are working with folks who need ID’s, that the get the ID before the third week of August. Reason is: currently, with the fee waived, they are issuing standard PA Non-driver Photo ID. Starting the end of August, they will be issuing a special “Voting Only” ID. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/breaking/20120720_State_to_rollback_requirements_for_voter_ID.html

A debate between Barack Obama and the GOP, as culled from public remarks.

    4/4/09: Barack Obama:
I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism. I’m enormously proud of my country and its role and history in the world.

    8/20/10: Mike Huckabee:
His worldview is dramatically different than any president, Republican or Democrat, we’ve had … To deny American exceptionalism is in essence to deny the heart and soul of this nation.

    9/20/11: Obama:
Michelle and I, we’re only here because somebody passed on this incredible notion, this exceptional American idea that it doesn’t matter where you come from, it doesn’t matter who you’re born to.

    10/8/11: Rick Perry:
Those in the White House today don’t believe—they don’t believe in American exceptionalism.

    11/12/11: Mitt Romney:
We have a president right now who thinks America’s just another nation. America is an exceptional nation.

    11/30/11: Obama:
America is great not just because we’re powerful, but also because we have a set of values that the world admires … We don’t just think about what’s good for us, but we’re also thinking about what’s good for the world … That’s what makes us exceptional.

      July 23, 2012 at 7:05 pm

To be honest, as a foreigner living in the United States, this whole “American Exceptionalism” chant from the right is one of the things that drives me those craziest. Every person has national pride – even those in really rotten countries have something that they’re proud of in their country. I never have a problem with Americans doing a “rah-rah” over their country. I do the same about Canada, just as other people do the same about their countries – which is essentially what the President was saying in his quote. But what I have a real problem with is that the GOP deny that other countries are also exceptional in many ways, and doing exceedingly well in many of the areas that the GOP are actively destroying with their policies – education, health care, national security (with these gun-toting crazies), care for the environment, worldliness, individual incomes, acceptance of immigration, globalization. Those negatives are irrefutable. It makes them look like they’ve got their heads in the sand when they refuse to acknowledge the damage that their policies are doing to the country, and also the fact that while they continue to obstruct progress – the rest of the world is streaking forward with some of these ideas that are languishing on the House floor.

The country isn’t exceptional just because a group of people say so. When we see statistic after statistic showing a decline in education, the highest number of gunshot victims in the developed world, the largest gap in wealth between workers and corporate executives, a growing deficit coupled with a decline in education standards while military expenditure exceeds the combined expenditure than all other developed countries, the fastest growth in healthcare costs while also seeing a correlating decline in actual health. These are facts. They are all elements of what makes a civilized society and an exceptional society. The GOP can’t claim exceptionalism, all the while forcing the country into a state that rivals developing countries. They just can’t.

      • 85 veryslowwriter
        July 23, 2012 at 8:09 pm

American exceptionalism doesn’t just mean that the country is excptional. It’s the idea that the United States is different from other countries in that it has a specific world mission to spread liberty and democracy. The right wingers see this as a free pass to invading other countries and making them adopt democracy….while also pilfering their resources. (I can’t see how that’s done much good in the past.)
Ironically the idea originated with the American Communist Party in the late 1920s. The argument was that having broken with Europe at the time of the American Revolution, the United States had a different revolutionary path.
American exceptionalism is also part of the fundamentalist goal of a “Christian” nation.

        • July 24, 2012 at 1:46 am

But, how do you spread democracy in the world when you’re (the GOP) destroying democracy at home? I’m not sure how many people know about this definition of exceptionalism that you’ve shared, but I’m pretty sure that when minorities and people who are different don’t feel free to live freely, and people have a hard time making ends meet, and the truth is consumed by lies told at every level and through every medium – I’m not sure that liberty and democracy is what is being perpetrated.

    //For Immediate Release July 23, 2012
Statement by the President on the Passing of Sally Ride

Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sally Ride. As the first American woman to travel into space, Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model. She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally’s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve and I have no doubt that her legacy will endure for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sally’s family and friends. //

Australia recently provided the US with access to an Australian military base at Darwin – http://www.smh.com.au/national/us-marine-base-for-darwin-20111110-1n9lk.html and since time immortal has been an ally of the the US.

The man that Mitt Romney lied about (after a PRIVATE chat no less) is our Foreign Minister – the equivalent of your Secretary of State. If this is how a Romney administration would treat its friends – then they may not want to be friends.

I think “lame” is a very polite way to describe Mitt, 4morefor44 – the man has foot in mouth disease of the highest order – he seems to insult someone every time he opens his mouth.

That other Cher movie was Mask with Eric Stoltz playing her son (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089560/). That one I saw. Definitely scores 3-tissues. 🙂

Our journalists are paid to not report accurately.

          I, too, am loving Newsroom.
Especially like the moment in last weeks episode when a pricipled producer refused to pronouce Gabby Gifford’s demise. I remember hearing that the Congresswoman had passed and how awful that was.

More recently, of course, we had CNN & Fox call a health care defeat. The current crop of propagandists will not report accurately as long as the $$$$ incentives lead them in the opposite direction.

It is up to us, folks.

Congress passes bill boosting pilots’ rightsAssociated Press (JOAN LOWY) 07/23/2012 18:46
Congress has passed a bill boosting pilots’ rights in Federal Aviation Administration disciplinary proceedings.

The measure was written by a senator who was ordered to take remedial flying lessons by the agency after he landed his plane on a closed runway.

The House approved the bill Monday by voice vote. The Senate approved the measure last month. The bill now goes to the president for his signature.

The bill was sponsored by Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe (IN-hoff), who sent workers on the ground scrambling when he landed his plane on a closed runway marked with a giant yellow X in 2010.

The bill requires the FAA to provide pilots with timely notice of disciplinary actions that might affect their license. Pilots also could appeal FAA decisions in federal court.

Corporate CEO Donates His $3 Million Bonus To Company’s Lower-Paid Workers

Yang Yuanqing, the chief executive of computer distributing company Lenovo, has decided to distribute his $3 million bonus to 10,000 of his company’s lower-paid workers, many of whom are manufacturers in the company’s Chinese plants. Each worker will receive about $317 worth of the bonus, an amount that roughly equals the average monthly salary of Chinese factory workers. Yang, who made $14 million last year, made the decision because the “strength of the company’s business performance to workers on the production line,” according to news reports. In the United States, CEO pay has risen 127 times faster than worker pay over the last three decades, and even as CEOs rake in massive bonuses, they continue to extract benefits from the workers they employ.

REPORT: Debt Limit Fight Cost Government $1.3 Billion In 2011

Republican opposition to raising the debt ceiling increased the government’s borrowing costs by $1.3 billion in fiscal year 2011, and costs will continue to rise in the future, a report from the Government Accountability Office found. The U.S. Treasury was forced to take varying actions to avoid hitting the debt limit before Congress raised it in August, forcing borrowing costs higher on multiple Treasury securities, the report found. And because many of those securities “will remain outstanding for years to come,” the borrowing costs will continue to rise in the near future. The debt limit fight also caused the first-ever downgrade of America’s credit rating, which Standard & Poor’s blamed on Republican unwillingness to raise taxes as part of a debt reduction deal.

Obama Victory Fund to hold fundraiser with stars from ‘The Wire’

The Obama Victory Fund and supporters have announced a fundraiser on August 15th with the cast of the HBO series The Wire. Highly acclaimed as one of the best TV series of all time, The Wire aired on HBO for 5 seasons from 2002-2008.

It is unclear which stars from the popular series will be attending the event, which will be hosted by Judy and Ron Davenport at their home in Martha’s Vineyard, but tickets can be purchased for $500 a guest, $2,500 per host, on the Obama campaign website.

Although President Obama has noted ‘The Wire’ as one of his favorite television shows and Omar as his favorite character, the president is not scheduled to attend the fundraiser.

Well that didn’t take long. Once the media makes a television star out of a crazed gunman, the copycats begin to surface. Already we have Timothy Courtois who was pulled over “for doing 112 mph on the Maine Turnpike in York Sunday morning.”
Upon pulling him over, police found an assault rifle, four handguns and several boxes of ammunition, they said. Also found inside his car were recent news clippings of the mass shooting at the Colorado movie theater, police said.
Police said Courtois then admitted to police he had attended the Batman movie at the Cinemagic Theater in Saco Saturday night with a loaded gun in his backpack. He also told authorities that he was on his way to Derry, N.H. to shoot a former employer. (photo)
I don’t know how to stop this madness, but I’m pretty damn sure less gun control isn’t the solution. [via watertiger]

upon logging into my Yahoo email account this morning there was a Jake Tapper article about Obama’s negative ad history. I opened it and became furious with him. He went back in history to an ad against Bobby Rush (last name?) Tapper defines everything that compares or lists anything about the opposition as negative. He listed several in his Primary run against Hillary then against McCain. The problem is when the definition includes anything saying something at all about the other side that is not positive as negative. When comparing lies against positions or facts and calling it negative it is totally misleading. Besides what is a candidate to do? Just ignore the other side and hope to win with no strategy against the opposition? Jake Tapper? Yuck!

Most assuredly. This week The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will give a reception for Heads of State and Government attending the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, at Buckingham Palace.

It’s not a dinner and heads of state means whoever is representing the Head of State if he/she is not attending. FLOTUS will be the rep (as I understand it) and the prevailing view around the palace is that Her Majesty is quite fond of MO. (The Queen is very skilled at keeping her dislike to herself but when she likes someone, it shines as bright as the sun.)

GOP Senator Blasts Obama For Talking ‘Incessantly’ About The Middle Class

The House GOP budget, meanwhile, gutted the social safety net, taking 62 percent of its cuts from programs that benefit the middle and lower classes. And while the GOP maintains the idea that reducing the debt and the tax burden on the wealthy will help middle-income Americans, the last decade has proven that to be utterly false. Republicans promised prosperity and job growth when they passed the high-income Bush tax cuts in 2003; what followed was a decade of rising deficits, anemic job growth, and a massive recession that decimated middle- and lower-class families and programs that benefit them.

Remarks by the President to the 113th National Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars

    VFW Convention Hall

    Reno, Nevada

Just as you protected America, we’re going to pass our country to the next generation, stronger and safer and more respected in the world. So if anyone tries to tell you that our greatness has passed, that America is in decline, you tell them this: Just like the 20th century, the 21st is going to be another great American Century. For we are Americans, blessed with the greatest form of government ever devised by man, a democracy dedicated to freedom and committed to the ideals that still light the world. We will never apologize for our way of life; we will never waver in its defense.

We are a nation that freed millions and turned adversaries into allies. We are the Americans who defended the peace and turned back aggression. We are Americans who welcome our global responsibilities and our global leadership. The United States has been, and will remain, the one indispensable nation in world affairs.

And you, you are the soldiers, the sailors, the airmen, the Marines and the Coast Guardsmen who have kept us strong. We will honor your legacy. And we will ensure that the military you served, and the America that we love, remains the greatest force for freedom that the world has ever known.

God bless you. God bless all of our veterans. And God bless the United States of America. (Applause.)

Obama announces Transition GPS effort as he courts military families
    (Page 2 of 6)

But the campaigns began to return to normal on Monday. Obama released a new television ad called “The Choice” in which he criticized Romney’s plan to cut taxes for the wealthy. His campaign held a conference call with reporters attacking Romney’s upcoming trip to Europe. And the Romney campaign as well as the Republican National Committee ripped into Obama’s speech in Reno before the 113th national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars — a group that reaches a key voting bloc both campaigns are battling to win in November.

Obama has been targeting service members, veterans and their families for months, touting his wind-down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, better job training and health benefits for veterans and the fact that al-Qaeda mastermind Osama bin Laden was killed on his watch.

He delivered a similar message Monday, but he added one nugget of news by announcing Transition GPS, an effort to improve an existing federal program that helps service members make the transition from military to private-sector life. Starting this year, Obama said, the program will help people leaving the armed services gain job training, earn certifications and find jobs. It will be mandatory for all departing service members-

    Did you guys see this???

Despite concerted Democratic attacks on his business record, Republican challenger Mitt Romney scores a significant advantage over President Obama when it comes to managing the economy, reducing the federal budget deficit and creating jobs, a national USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.

By more than 2-1, 63%-29%, those surveyed say Romney’s background in business, including his tenure at the private equity firm Bain Capital, would cause him to make good decisions, not bad ones, in dealing with the nation’s economic problems over the next four years.

The findings raise questions about Obama’s strategy of targeting Bain’s record in outsourcing jobs and hammering Romney for refusing to commit to releasing more than two years of his tax returns.

    Gallup again….

Wow isn’t it obvious what they’re doing with their bogus poll after poll after poll…

Leave Romney alone!! Lets focus on your ”failed” policies…

Ef them, bunch of lying hypocrites….

Is this a new poll? I hadn’t heard about it and I just got an email from a friend asking me about it. Any more info about the demographic weighting and crosstabs?

Those numbers don’t pass the “smell test”. A couple of weeks ago, after PBO scored major victories by having ACA upheld and making Bain a dirty word, some on this site warned of the MSM creating polls that favor Mitt during the coming weeks in an attempt to impede PBO’s momentum. Well this is what we are witnessing. Don’t believe the hype. The people who made this prediction are not clarvoyant. They realize the game being played and know that the MSM favors Mitt/GOP and will use all of it’s tools to give Mitt an edge over PBO. Polls are easily manipulated and can be very effective propaganda in shaping public perception of reality, which is why our MSM relies so heavily on them. Don’t let these polls upset you, just continue to spread the truth about PBO and our corrupt media.

    • July 23, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Then why is Chuck Todd saying that Obama is swift paying Robney?
Why the demonstrative reaction from Willard Camp?
Finally, national polls mean squat! It’s all about 6% of the Electirate in 12 battleground States.
Who cates if we lose Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Alabama by 50 points?

The write up on this poll is bogus. The question seemed to be whether Romney will make good decisions or bad ones. However the write up makes it seem as though the question was a choice between Romney and POTUS.

I thought the media said Hollywood was abandoning Pres. Obama in droves. Well lookey here. 😆 😆

First George Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker, and now, stars from HBO’s cult-classic series “The Wire” are getting in on the fund-raising act for President Obama’s reelection campaign.

According to an invitation posted on BarackObama.com, supporters of the president’s second charge at the White House can visit the Martha’s Vineyard home of Judy and Ron Davenport on the evening of Aug. 15 to mingle with cast members from the HBO drug drama.

Would-be attendees can score tickets for $500 per person, or if they’re feeling especially flush, they can join the host committee at $2,500 a pop. Proceeds will go to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fund-raising committee comprising Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties.

Why “The Wire”? It’s apparently one of Obama’s favorite shows, although the president isn’t slated to attend that evening, according to the Sunlight Foundation. Meanwhile, Politico mentioned a lineup that included Jamie Hector, Clarke Peters (pictured), Wendell Pierce, Andre Royo and Sonja Sohn as some of the show’s stars expected to stump for Obama at the Davenports’ house.

“The Wire” fund-raiser was just one of three reported events making headlines on Monday. Nathan Lane is planning an Aug. 24 fund-raiser in Bridgehampton, N.Y., with co-hosts Julianne Moore, Edie Falco and Jane Holzer. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend Lane’s “East End for Obama” event, which will cost from $500 to $10,000 and will feature a performance by James Taylor, according to the New York Post.

Finally, not to be outdone, mega-producer Harvey Weinstein is teaming up with Vogue top editor Anna Wintour for a joint fund-raiser in Greenwich, Conn., on Aug. 6, the Post reported Monday. Joining the guest list for Wintour and Weinstein’s party comes at the considerable cost of $35,800 per booster.

The president’s re-election campaign adds three L.A. dates in August featuring the first lady and vice president.First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are both scheduled to hit the Los Angeles fundraising scene next month, and the Obama re-election campaign is working to get the most out of their visits by adding events to their schedules.

Along with a family-oriented fundraiser at the Beverly Hills home of singer and designer Gwen Stefani on Aug. 12, the rirst lady also will be the guest of honor at an event later that day at the home of Warner Bros. CEO Barry Meyer and his wife, Wendy. Tickets prices to the latter range from $2,500 to $25,000.

The following afternoon, tech entrepreneur and executive Yolanda “Cookie” Parker, an Obama National Finance committee member, will co-host an “intimate luncheon” for the first lady in Ladera Heights, the hillside community that is part of the nation’s most affluent majority African-American census tract. Couples hoping to attend that event should plan on spending $25,000, while going on your own only will run $3,500.

Biden will be in L.A. on Aug. 3 for a fundraising reception at the home of entrepreneur and active Democratic donor Shoukat Hussain Ali. Tickets to that event go for $10,000 per person. Meanwhile, on Aug. 6, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry and his wife, Berta, will host a private benefit concert for the president’s re-election. As befits an evening in the Santa Monica home of the Walt Disney Concert Hall’s designer, the concert’s musician will be super star cellist Yo Yo Ma. Ticket prices from $2,500 to $10,000 per couple.

Broke? Not if Governments Tax the $21 TRILLION Rich Have Offshored

John Nichols on July 23, 2012 – 2:14 PM ET

Does it matter that Mitt Romney, the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party for president of the United States, is a huge fan of offshore tax havens?

It should to Americans who take seriously the question of whether this country has the resources to pay for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, implementation of the Affordable Care Act and all the other programs and initiatives that Romney and House Budget Committee Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, say we can no longer afford.

The truth, of course, is that the United States produces more than enough taxable wealth to pay for every program that Romney and Ryan propose to “reform,” mangle, dismantle or eliminate.

Indeed, a remarkable new study produced for the global Tax Justice Network reveals that at least $21 trillion—yes, that’s “trillion” with a “t”—has been shielded from appropriate taxation in the secret tax havens favored by the super-rich of the United States and other countries around the world.

To put that figure in perspective, $21 trillion is the equivalent of the combined GDPs the United States and Japan.
