Keep me in your thoughts, everyone. I’m going to be on reference most of the day, since my boss is home with a very nasty illness. It’s going to be one of those days.

Right on patti. All the ones who are running their darn mouth, get your butts are there and help re-elect President Obama, help get rid of these Republicans, give President Obama some sane people he can work with then he can work on making it harder to get those automatic weapons. But this President is already in a tough election because of the economy, and these fools want him to stick his neck out on gun control. I don’t think so.

    • July 23, 2012 at 3:23 pm

That would be the political wise but the less courageous thing to do. It is a classic double-bind.

Yes, to the fringe left……if they don’t work to elect him and a Democratic house, NOTHING will get done! Is that the way they like it? They’d rather complain than work and win????

    • July 23, 2012 at 2:03 pm

But, that is the Role they play. Always have. Then, they wonder why the Country is a mess? They have a “Role” in that, to coin the phrase!

I heard someone on Friday on Randi Rhodes’ show (Nicole Sandler was hosting) say that the President shouldn’t take the caller’s vote for granted (and of course he doesn’t, hence his hoarse voice last week after non-stop rallying and asking people for their votes). The caller then said that if President Obama doesn’t do something about gun control right away, he won’t get the caller’s vote. Of course, Nicole Sandler agreed with him. Giving them both some leeway because emotions were high on Friday after the shooting, I just shook my head and wondered if they are capable of thinking past their immediate reaction and to the five minutes after they withhold their votes and find themselves staring directly at a Republican President, House and Senate. How much gun control do they think they’ll get then? It’s so shortsighted to squeal about ‘x’ and ‘y’ without taking reality into account.

When did it stop being illegal to fundraise in a foreign country?!?! Aren’t they still bitching because through six degrees of separation, Al Gore had someone with an Indian-sounding name contribute to his campaign?

Didn’t the Unholy Five SWEAR that there would be NO CHANCE that foreign money would pollute our elections?

We can be certain the Queen and all the Brits will be much more excited about seeing FLOTUS than they will be seeing Willard, Ann, and the dancing horse. FLOTUS is a super star of the world. The world could less about the Willards. The comparison is not going to look good for the Willards.

The FLOTUS gets to lead the U.S. delegation, champion them, promote her wonderful Let’s Move initiative, and have a sit down reception with the Queen, who from all reports holds FLOTUS in the highest regard.

Romney goes to the Olympics to cheer on a horse.

      What a visual.

Not only a horse, but a “dancing” horse. The Queen loves race horses but maybe not Austrian “dancing” horses so much.

I’m sure Romney will be all too eager to issue press statements misquoting Prime Minister Cameron after is meeting, and badmouthing the President. Fortunately, I’m sure the word “Romney” will never be uttered from First Lady Michelle’s lips while she’s there. She has class, unlike the Romneys.

I looked at John Holmes picture on the courtroom. I was instantly taken aback at what I saw and know many here will condemn me for this but I saw a very deeply disturbed man. The discription of him falling asleep and his expression like he was seeing something that wasn’t there disturbed me… Now I’m not saying he should or shouldn’t be put to death but I am saying there is something that really bothers me about this footage.

I feel that yet again this is the product of our nation refusing to address mental illness and do ANYTHING to help those that are mentally ill. Our social programs to address this issue is a disgrace and instead they throw the mentally ill (most never commit the crimes that Holmes or Laughner commit) to prison. I think it is deeply troubling that people like Bloomberg focus on gun control rather than the mentally ill and those that are in desperate need of help before it’s too late.

Of course not all mentally ill commit these sorts of heinous acts but if unchecked we will see an upsurge of these sorts of things. Again please don’t misunderstand me as I care about the victims way more than Holmes but to ignore this guy and instead treat him like he doesn’t matter and just to focus on the victims is a mistake in my opinion.

It’s not a popular discussion but it’s a necessary one. It is easier to get 6000 rounds of ammunition than it is to get adequate mental health care. We scour for red flags after the fact, rather than before.

President Obama was in the community when he said that perhaps to honor a request that came from the community. There that emphasis will rightly prevail. I share your concern with this and think the country as a whole needs to get behind this.

Stock Shifting and Loopholes: Mitt Romney’s Tax Evasion

    —————————-

But then there’s the other factor: the unmitigated avarice of Romney. Steve Rattner, who served as President Obama’s car czar, and who is a proponent of private equity, explained this during an appearance on Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN:

“If you say to your tax people, as he seems to have done, ‘I want every trick in the book. I want to push this to the edge. I will tell you that as a private equity guy, I’m familiar with many of the things that he did. And I know many people who have done many of the things that he did. I do not know anyone who did everything that he did. Some of what he did, like the IRA, I have asked fellow private equity guys. None of us had even known this was a possible trick, if you will. He has pushed the envelope all the way to the edge, to his benefit, and I think that Americans would find that pretty distasteful.”

Yes, they would find it distasteful. In fact, the IRA that Rattner mentioned is another example of Romney’s fuzzy math when it comes to his own finances. That IRA contains a whopping $102 million, and Romney has yet to explain how that account has managed to amass such an amount, considering the annual limits on IRA contributions, even for a guy like Romney, as William D. Cohen of Bloomberg explains:

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/07/bush-tax-cuts-middle-class-150000-deficit.php?ref=fpa

Just so everyone is clear that the Republicans don’t give a damn about the deficit…(a chart!)

Democrats also want to extend expiring tax cuts from the 2009 Recovery Act, targeted directly at the middle class. The GOP plan allows all those tax cuts to expire. So while the two plans are similar in many ways, the GOP plan demands extending tax cuts for wealthy Americans, while allowing middle class taxes to go up slightly. The Democrats’ plan accomplishes the opposite. And the net result? According to a preliminary report by the Joint Committee on Taxation, provided by the Democratically controlled Senate Finance Committee, the Democrats’ plan would have a significantly more salutary impact on the deficit next year — over $42 billion in 2013 — than the GOP plan.

Here’s how it looks in chart form. Note that this chart excludes the parties’ different plans to patch the Alternative Minimum Tax. When you include that figure, the GOP plan increases the deficit even more.

It’s a little too ‘close’ for comfort for me although I think it’s well-acted. Sigourney Weaver is trying to sell it as a ‘family drama’. But the parallels are uncomfortable for me and in this reality-challenged culture it will be read as ‘truth’ about everyone involved.

It’s rather unflattering, if they’re trying to pattern that character after Hillary Clinton. Anyway, I think I’ll give the show one more week, then I’m done. The only character I like is the female lead reporter. It just seems too shrouded in messages that I don’t like.
