Greg Sargent: So here’s where this is going. The Romney campaign is out with a new Web video hitting Obama over the “don’t build that” quote. It features a business owners who is angry at Obama for supposedly insulting his hard work. “My hands didn’t build this company?” the man asks. “Through hard work and a little bit of luck, we build this business. Why are you demonizing us for it?”

But the video deceptively edits Obama’s remarks to seamlessly link up two different parts of the speech, removing a chunk in order to make Obama’s remarks seem far worse than they are. Here is how Obama’s speech — which you hear in the background while pictures of the man driving flash on the screen — is represented in the video….

NYT: In the new blockbuster “The Dark Knight Rises,” the actor Morgan Freeman plays an aide-de-camp to Batman as the caped crusader battles the arch-villain Bane.

But in the battle for the White House, Mr. Freeman is backing President Obama. Last month, Mr. Freeman donated $1 million to Priorities USA Action, officials there said Thursday. The group, a super PAC backing Mr. Obama, has lately been broadcasting advertisements attacking the Republican candidate Mitt Romney for his tenure at Bain Capital, the private equity firm.

“President Obama has done a remarkable job in terrible circumstances,” Mr. Freeman said in a statement, adding that Mr. Obama was “being targeted by hundreds of millions of dollars in special interest money.”

“Priorities USA Action is doing a great job of protecting the values I believe in,” Mr. Freeman said. “I am happy to help them and I hope others will do so as well.”

Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it’s only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.

Hi ya, Hf! 😆 Hopefully the TOD twitter team will be out in force today. I’ll be tweeting later as I’m going to miss the speeches live – I promised the Dem office I’d return to help out this morning and the times overlap. If we can get online there I’ll try to encourage others to take a look, although I’m not sure how they are set up for computers.

Have a great day, and keep up the good work!

ROMNEY DOES FLIP-FLOP-FLIP WITH A TRIPLE AXLE

Romney echoes Obama line on public institutions

    By Steve Benen

    ——————————-

But whether Democrats are eager to pounce on this or not, this was a remarkable development. Consider this brief timeline of events:

    * Friday: Team Romney hears Obama’s comment, deems it meaningless.

    * Tuesday: Team Romney reconsiders, takes Obama’s comment out of context, says it proves he’s un-American.

    * Wednesday: Romney endorses the underlying point of Obama’s comment, while still taking it out of context

You can condemn an idea or you can embrace an idea, but only Mitt Romney can do both at the same time.

Does she realize that those “you people” she’s deriding are the ones she needs to vote for her husband? If they don’t want “you people” to know more about their lives and their money, then they don’t need to run for public office… emphasis on the word “public”. If they’re like this when they’re trying to woo “you people”, what will happen if they win (heaven forbid)! Anyone who idolizes Dick Cheney and panders to Donald Trump is questionable and devoid of any integrity, human compassion and intelligence.

Ann is worse than Mitt, in my opinion.

Okay folks, earlier this week I warned that we would be flooded with a slew of shady polls suggesting that PBO’s Bain attacks aren’t working. We have begun to see some of that, but I urge people to not fall for the BS. E.g., the Quinnipiac poll that shows PBO and Romney supposedly tied when PBO had a 12 point lead the last time is just nonsense.

Let’s keep the pressure on Romney to release his tax returns.

    • July 19, 2012 at 9:05 am

The CBS poll is also nonsense. People have to look at the actual inside numbers, but the fact is that if the Bain attacks were not working then the Republican chorus asking Romney to release his returns would not be growing. The Romney campaign would not be getting geared up to attack President Obama’s drug use as a teenager and try the “foreign” attacks again if they were not desperate. These attacks are working in swing states. The MSM will make this a close race no matter what. Remember when they showed McCain/Palin leading Obama/Biden at one point. They told us that the election would be close all the way through election day in 2008. They were dead wrong.

    • July 19, 2012 at 9:07 am

The undecideds heavily favor the President. You can skew a poll by making undecideds a lot higher, which is what QuiniPanic did!

Sanctimonious Hypocrite: Mitt Romney’s Investment in Iranian Oil (VIDEO)

    ——————

So far, Mitt Romney has released only his 2010 Federal Income Tax returns and nothing more. People across America are becoming increasingly uneasy about what is unknown about this candidate. What on earth does he have to hide? When someone decides to run for the highest office in the free world, full disclosure is not that candidate’s “personal decision”! It is a national imperative. Here is what The Stew found on Mitt Romney’s 2006 financial disclosure form. We, the electorate of the United States of America demand to see more.
    .
    .
If any of the above was part of Barack Obama’s investment portfolio, the Right Wing would be going nuts. Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck would be frothing at the mouth. Mitt Romney would be doing his robotic “lumber to the left, then to the right while smacking his lips” rant about how un-American Barack Obama is.

This is excellent, Ladyhawke! I was doing the very same thing last night. Looking into Bain investments. I found that Bain owns a Chinese tire stem manufacturer that was responsible for a recall because of a tire blowout. SOMEONE DIED FROM THAT ACCIDENT….and that’s only one that’s known! I have the link and info on the last thread.
I am trying to dig into the Chinese drywall issues to see if there is any connection there. This man profits are more important to him than other people’s pain. The ability to make money is the ONLY personal responsibility he has as far as he’s concerned! There is something very sinister and repulsive about someone profiting from death and pain of others….I think that this is the angle that we need to pursue…if he won’t release his returns (and there are MANY reasons for that, as I have just shown) then we need to dig up his investments on our own and see what damage he’s responsible for!

If the Tweeters are here, let me know and I will bring my findings over…or if you can RT the Tweets that went out late last night….that would be great.

Andre… beautiful quote. Chips…now I want that poster:) Morning all….

Hey guys just a heads up for the media meme for the next two days and basically next week. The media haz a sad because Mittens has had to undergo a withering and sustained personal attack from the Obama campaign…I mean the gall of those folks? Asking for at least 8 years of tax returns—what moron even started that legacy? It’s not like Mitt would lie to us about having a vested interest in companies that might ship jobs overseas or do business with Iran or Syria—He’s running for office for pete’s sake and the trust has been BLINDED. Secondly, enough with the Bain stories. Mitt should be able to say he created jobs and that should be enough! Why the investigative reports…who do these people think they are are, journalists?

    .
So get ready for it’s not really that bad stories and the polls (taken before the sustained Bain attacks) back us up stories. Also, Mittens is going across the pond to meet with people no one cares about next week, so get ready for this “IZABIGDEAL” stories…and “OMG HEisSOpresidentialLOOKING” stories. But, strange, Mittens won’t be going to see the troops in Afghanistan.

    • July 19, 2012 at 9:30 am

Well the Obama campaign needs to make a campaign video of the people in IL asking Willard to come and help them save their jobs as Bailn capital is getting ready to ship them overseas. Fox News have spliced and diced the words and video of what the President actually said and it is no surprise that their viewers are among the most uninformed.

FOX ACTING AS ASSIGNMENT EDITOR FOR MAINSTREAM MEDIA

NBC News Plays Its Role In The Fox Cycle

      ————————————–

NBC’s Nightly News ran with the deceptively edited comments and played video of Mitt Romney distorting Obama’s remarks and characterizing them as “insulting to every entrepreneur, every innovator in America and it’s wrong.” NBC didn’t give the full context of Obama’s comments.

The Fox Cycle is the phenomenon where Fox News helps the conservative fringe bring bogus stories into mainstream outlets. It works like this:

      1. Right-wing bloggers, talk radio hosts, and other conservative media outlets start promoting and distorting the story.

      2. Fox News picks up the story and gives it heavy, one-sided coverage.

      3. Fox News and conservative media attack the “liberal media” for ignoring the distorted story.

      4. Mainstream media outlets eventually cover the story, echoing the right-wing distortions.

      5. Fox News receives credit for promoting the story.

      6. The story is later proven to be false or wildly misleading, long after damage is done.

No matter what the “polls” say, the GOP sees the writing on the wall, and it’s NOT GOOD for Willard.

    • July 19, 2012 at 9:26 am

Exactly which again proves the attacks are working. When Charles Krauthammer goes on Fox and says PBO would “win” if elections held today due to the Romney campaigns non handling of releasing his taxes, then we know the attacks are working. The Republican chorus is getting louder. I just tweeted Joe Scarborough asking why are GOP members calling for the release of these returns if according to the CBS poll the attacks aren’t working. We all know better than that.

Can Romney survive the summer storm?

    By Dan Balz

    —————————————–

As a result, Obama’s team has been controlling the campaign debate. A few weeks ago, it was about Bain Capital’s role in shipping jobs overseas. Last week, it was about the terms and timing of when Romney left the private-equity firm. This week, it’s whether Romney will be forced to release more tax returns than he has said he would. Next week could be something else.
    .
    .
But many Republicans are nervous. They fear the ground could be shifting. They wonder why the Romney campaign seemed ill-prepared for the attacks on Bain. They wish Romney would shut down questions about his tax returns by turning over more years than just 2010 and 2011 (which are not yet done). Some are saying this publicly. Others, Romney advisers say, are offering plenty of private and unsolicited advice to Boston as well.

Just a note to let you all know how the phone banking went last night. in Rochester, MN, we are trending purple so it was interesting. Met some very nice people on the OFA team and made around 100 calls. A couple of them were not very nice, but it was interesting to hear them spout the Fox talking points. Those were in 70-80+ yrear old brackets. Too much time watching Fox and CNN. One lady, 87, said she voted for President Obama the first time and voted Dem all her life and won’t vote for him this time. We had a long conversation, I don’t know that I changed her mond, but I gave a lot to think about and asked that she keep an open mind and do some research on just what is actually going on rather than getting her information just from Fox & Cnn. Left the conversation feeling pretty good and some maybe’s on volunteering. Because the office is so close to my apartment, I can go over anytime and phone bank and I will do that. I feel at least I can contribute that way. And work for the down ticket.
That’s it for today. Have some stuff to do at freinds getting ready to move. BBL.

This phrase underlines what Charles Pierce said: that to the Romneys, all of us are The Help and are not worthy enough for him to show us his tax returns. This is the attitude expressed in everything he says and does. A Romney presidency will be the end of democracy as we know it and have known it, and will be the installation of a plutocracy. As Harry Reid said: 17 bitter old white men will own us. I don’t say this to be a downer, but to put it in stark relief for all of us to work harder.

Funny Ann Romney used “You People” while taking to Robin Roberts, a Black woman?

Then YOU PEOPLE rolled out of Ann Romney’s mother? Coincident? Especially in light of Willard Mitterrand Romney’s disrespect at the NAACP convention last week.

‘Am I over thinking it? I doubt it.

The right and the media went nuts and are still nagging on FLOTUS for her comments in 2008. They are still talking about then sen Obama’s comment about some in PA in 2008.

Ann Romney said it was “OUR TURN” to Diane Sawyer, she got Zero push back from that. Now You People? And the press just keeps making excuses for her and Mittens…..But Howard Kurtz would quote Mike Murphy…..a GOP strategist….as his bastion of wisdom for double standard? This Morning it was Frank Luntz on CBS and NO one asked him about his 4 hrs meeting on Jan 20, 2009, plotting for the demise of pres Obama. Shameful media and their fakeness.

I was also thinking the “Our turn” and “You people” may not seem like a big deal individually but it is beginning to show a pattern of thinking and attitude that is alarming. It may not be racist but definitely seems to point to class elitist attitudes. Let’s keep collecting these slip ups!

    • July 19, 2012 at 10:06 am

If I type “you people” into Google, the seventh hit is:

      http://youpeople.net/

The explanation for the existence of this site:

“It was a play on a comment by Ross Perot who ran for President in 1992 as an Independent. While speaking at a NAACP meeting, Ross Perot referred to the members as you people.”

      No Comment Necessary.

Bringing this over because it’s wonderful news. Ignore the biased polls. 😀

Actor Morgan Freeman is the newest seven-figure donor to the Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action, POLITICO has confirmed.

In a statement, Freeman lauded both the president’s record and Priorities USA for its role in the 2012 campaign.

“President Obama has done a remarkable job in historically difficult circumstances. He ended combat operations in Iraq, put in place sensible reforms of Wall Street, saved the auto industry and protected the health care of every American. He has led our nation to be more tolerant and placed impressive, accomplished women on the Supreme Court. In return, he is the target of hundreds of millions of dollars from right-wing sources,” Freeman said. “I am proud to lend my voice – and support – to those who defend him. Priorities USA Action is doing a great job of protecting the values I believe in. I am happy to help them and I hope others will join me.”

The donation comes as Priorities continues to run harsh ads attacking Mitt Romney for his record at Bain Capital and some wealthy potential contributors give the group a second look. Freeman also appears in the superhero movie of the summer, “The Dark Knight Rises,” opening this week.

GM all – the jobs report today is not good so get ready for pushback. I think that pepole are getting anxious about the economy again and even though some of the polls are skewed the general trend is worth keeping an eye on. No use being in denial. Can someone explain the ‘you people’ thing to me? I missed all of that. Let’s keep asking where are the tax returns?

      July 19, 2012 at 9:43 am

“I think that pepole are getting anxious about the economy again” Where is your data to back this up, and I’m not talking about some right-skewed poll.

There have been several good indicators about the economy e.g., the recent increase in housing starts 6.9% the highest increase since October 2008. The “general trend” that you’re talking about is going in the right direction, despite unprecedented GOP obstructionism. The jobs report last week showed that unemployment claims fell, so this week being different is not a “trend.” It’s a fluctuation.

      • 116 cluny
        July 19, 2012 at 9:52 am

I am basing my analysis on the latest batch of polls (not just the NYT/CBS) and today’s jobs report (which is more in line with recent trends). TPM has a good track of PBO’s favourables over the past couple of weeks and they have ticked down. Now I DON’T want to be a downer but it is worth keeping an eye on. Having said that I think it’s more important to keep on at Mitt for his outsourcing and taxes.

        • 117 hopefruit2
          July 19, 2012 at 9:59 am

You’re basing your analysis on a bunch of polls with skewed sampling and flawed methodology. TPM takes it’s aggregate trending data from the same flawed polls. According to CBS/NYT PBO’s favorability is at 36%. Do you truly buy that? I certainly don’t. Favorability is NEVER lower than job approval and his job approval in that same poll is 44%.

Secondly, as I said, the jobless claim rate is not a trend, because last week and the week before it was in the opposite direction. It’s a fluctuation.

      • 119 hopefruit2
        July 19, 2012 at 10:15 am

The weekly jobless claims, which was down last week, now up this week. This is not a trend, it’s a fluctuation.

        • July 19, 2012 at 10:21 am

Exactly and last week it dropped sharply. And as you said the general trend shows it is moving in the right direction. On a personal observation just about every one I talked to has commented how the economy is getting better. Slow but sure. As one economist said a few months back don’t confuse speed with progress.

    • 121 theo67
      July 19, 2012 at 12:10 pm

We’re lucky the jobs reports are worse than they are, since the GOP started stalling the recovery by blocking all forms of stimulus. If the President hadn’t negotiated additional stimulus in 2010, and then extended the Bush tax cuts for the middle class, plus negotiated the extension of the payroll tax cuts – then the GOP policy of “do nothing” would have already plunged the country into another recession. Instead, those efforts have kept the economy afloat and even making modest progress.

What the slow recovery signifies is the effect of GOP policies – pure and simple. And if people allow the GOP to come in and own the economy in November, then they’ll be wishing for these jobs reports, because they will be in a hell of their own making. And I’m not exaggerating.

I added we are compiling a picture of the Romney’s with the “You people” and the “Our turn” comments by Ann. There is the comment by Romney that his boys gave to their Country by volunteering to help his campaign over the military. The giving money to his sons’ savings was sited as an example of giving during the Primaries besides giving to the Morman Church. The Bermuda IRA and “BLIND” trust chosing to invest in his son’s business along with the old video clip of Mitt saying “Blind trusts are a roose (sp?)” show how he does have involvement in his money. WE know that there are numerous lies and flip flops but others do not see these lies like we do.

Good morning all. I want to start a new meme, or whatever you want to call it. This is prompted by something that happened yesterday, but that even was merely one in a string of events.

Anyway, the point is that Mitt Romney is a coward, pure and simple. Always has been, always will be. And do we want a coward as President?

This is just a beginning of a list. I am not a twitterer but I think that someone could probably set up a hash tag of MittRomneyCoward or something. And then start listing all the ways. I call this little ditty

How is Mitt Romney a Coward? Let Me Count the Ways

    1. Bullied people in high school but required other people to help him.
    2. When starting Bain Capital required assurances that he would not be held responsible either financially or reputation wise if it was not a success.
    3. Wrote an op-ed saying Detroit should go bankrupt, then denied that, then took claim for auto indtrustry revival.
    4. Wrote op-ed calling for national mandate then campaigned against it because it was politically expedient to do so.
    5. When asked about Limbaugh’s slanderous campaign against Sandra Fluke would only say that he would have used a different phrase than “slut” without coming right out and condemning what Limbaugh said.
    6. When a woman in the audience at one of his rallies called PBO a monster, would only say “I eouldn’t use that term” again without disagreeing with her or correcting her. (Even McCain wouldn’t stoop that low.)
    7. Refuses to release his tax returns because he thinks they would be distorted.
    8. Wants credit for some things Bain did after he supposedly left, like Staples, but refuses to accept responsibility for others (supposedly outsourcing or is it off shoring.
    9. Will not talk about his real plans or approval of things like the Ryan budget.

Anyway, you guys get the idea. How can we get this spread around?

If Mitt Romney Is Going To Lose, He’s Going To Lose Ugly

    By LOLGOP

    ——————————-

Just imagine Mitt Romney’s inner monologue on the day he signed RomneyCare. There’s his old nemesis Ted Kennedy standing next to him, smiling that Kennedy smile. Finally the Heritage Foundation’s conservative alternative to single payer health care will get a chance in the nation’s most liberal state. This is how you become president, Ol’ Mitty, he must have thought. Just play it down the middle.

We know Mitt is a malleable guy, to say the least. For years, he pretended to be sincerely pro-choice. Now he pretends to be severely anti-abortion rights. But he’s always been, as Kennedy quipped, “multiple choice. What Mitt never expected back then was that a Democratic president would appropriate his signature achievement – and that it would then become the most hated thing in Fox Nation since Jimmy Carter.

I heard some NPR report last week with coal workers saying they blame President Obama for the loss of their jobs. If Congress had allowed investment in exploring whether clean coal energy was even possible, some of those workers might not be losing their industry. Can’t ruin the environment in order to keep people working in a damaging industry and put profits for a few ahead of the health of these workers. Either they can push for a revamp of their industry so that they can produce clean coal (if that’s even possible) and protect their health and the environment, or they learn how to work in the natural gas industry – which is also prevalent in that same region. Ignorance can be very dangerous.

Thank you, amk…it’s even BIGGER than this though. As I look through this tangled web of all things Romney owned…it is apparent that he controls more than the average person even knows.Because he has an ownership stake and stands to profit from these investments, how do we know that he will do what’s right for America over what’s good for his own personal wealth and gains? How do we know that he won’t be subject to blackmail or extortion? The answer is, we don’t. And that’s scary. If he should win this election, we would officially be a plutocracy…where the wealthy rule the people for their personal gain. His ownership in so many facets of our lives, from the media, to gas and oil, to all kinds of things….wrap your head’s around this!
The fact that they have already shown true revulsion and disdain for the “commoners”…is just a taste of what would be under a President Romney. Make NO mistake…it is profit over people…those simple words are what led me to find just the connections that I have.

    POLLS-A-POPPIN’

    By Ed Kilgore

    ——————————————

Presidential election polls, particularly those showing unexpected trends, are almost invariably accompanied by ridiculous amounts of spin and over-reaction, and that’s looking to be the case for three new national polls (CBS/NYTimes, NPR and Fox) and one state poll (Quinnipiac in VA) released yesterday.
    .
    .
And speaking of “different takes,” anyone paying attention to the back-and-forth spin on poll results should definitely read Mark Blumenthal’s refresher course at HuffPost on likely voter screens (which often produce better results for Republicans), and why most pollsters are reluctant to use them before relatively late in the cycle.

The bottom line is that poll averages remain the most reliable indicator of the contest, and the apparent lack of evidence of any big impact from the Bain/tax attacks on Romney is a reminder that voters do not follow these “stories” much at all until they have been aired repeatedly. I continue to believe the most important aspect of the Bain/tax issue is its utility as a set-up for later criticism’s of the Romney/GOP policy agenda as expressed in the Ryan budget.

At this point in the campaign, all that is necessary is for the Obama team to plant the seed of “fishiness” about R-money. The details are complicated, but ad after ad asking what he’s hiding and repeated ads of the suffering he’s inflicted on people and towns form a drip drip, drip that erodes R-money’s standing.

Michelle Obama, who has defined herself in the White House as mom-in-chief, has become a cheerleader-in-chief for her husband’s reelection campaign. This Friday she will launch an unusual campaign within the Obama campaign, which aides have dubbed “It Takes One.”

The program centers on organizing voter turnout and building neighborhood teams to work for President Obama’s reelection. Michelle Obama will appear on her own in ads touting the initiative, an overtly political role that is rare for a first lady.

The effort acknowledges a critical question looming over the 2012 race: Can Obama’s campaign revive its grass-roots organization, which drew record numbers to mass rallies during the 2008 campaign?

In a three-minute video that introduces the initiative, Michelle Obama reflects on her early days campaigning with Barack Obama when he ran for Illinois state senate. As old photos of the first couple flash across the screen, she describes how they would go out and knock on doors and collect signatures with a couple of friends.

When will Nbc/Msnbc become the news leaders instead of following fox edited talking pionts. They are gradually becoming fox lite like Cnn which has lost its moral compass. There are so many topics that they could have been the news leader but they have allowed fox news and the rightwing to be the push network. Here are just a few topics they could have been the push/ leading network. Willard agreed with the President that government helps create business friendly environment like building roads, having teaches and no one goes it by themselves. Willard also indicated Cayman accounts are used to aviod paying US taxes. Cant Nbc/Msnbc just be the push network for just this two topics and ask the serious journalistic questions that are expected of them. I am just sick that they let Romney get away with blatant lies and they dont even correct the lies that Romney surrogates spew during interviews. Mrs Greenspan yesterday let the romney press secretary go on and on with out even answering simple question or correcting her edited talk. Regardless what they do The President is going to win this election and I will be cheering him on and along his side on this treacheous journey.

No one who has received amnesty for a serious crime, such as tax evasion, can be president. One would think that someone for whom the clear implications are that he has received amnesty, but will not release exculpatory documents, also cannot be president.

As the press has been focused on what we now know as Romney’s “retroactive retirement”, that does not help him escape clear responsibility for his outsourcing strategy anyhow, I have tried to shine a light on the clearest, cleanest, unspinnable, problem with Romney’s finances — amnesty for his Swiss accounts — suggesting that the Republican leaders, who dislike him anyhow, could not abide such a fatally-flawed nominee.

But, all I had on my side was logic. Why would he have closed only the Swiss Account when the Cayman/Bermuda accounts are also abusive tax havens, and he left those alone? Why would Romney have bothered to close the Swiss account at all? I deduced that what was special about his Swiss Account was the amnesty program allowed by the IRS. I also surmised that it was amnesty, more than anything else, that would keep him from releasing earlier tax returns.

Now, through investigative reporting, there is highly suggestive evidence that the logic was not wrong. Romney failed to disclose the documents he filed with the IRS in 2010, the year he has already released, that detail his Swiss Account holdings.

Hence, I am now prepared to go beyond my suggestions that the Republicans would not give him the nomination to a firm prediction: Romney will not be the 2012 Republican nominee for president. (He may be the “retroactive 2008 nominee” as Darrell Issa, who also cannot run for higher office due to his shady past, suggests).

Who will be? Before Romney is forced to withdraw, he will make a Vice Presidential selection, as an attempt to make it seem that his nomination is just rolling along, and is inevitable.

That person will have been fully vetted, (including his/her tax returns!).

I predict, therefore, that the Republican nominee for president will be the person Romney selects as his VP.

How ironic if that turned out to be T-Paw, who dropped out after losing to Michelle Bachmann in Iowa, (and whom Lawrence O’Donnell picked all along) becomes the 2012 Republican nominee for president!

Damn, Linda! You think like I do! These tax issues and the amnesty issues for the Swiss acct. was your thing. I focused on his investments to see where those led me….they led me to sinister places and thoughts about this man and his alliances….and his profits. Somehow, someway…we have to get someone in the investigative media to look into these ideas in far more detail than we can go….this is important!!

I suspect that Jeb Bush will be chosen as the VP pick and then will become the nominee. Remember, he recently announced that he’d be ok as the VP pick, and Romney has been wooing the Bush family (and Cheney) for months now. And then George Bush came out of hiding to endorse Mitt. They’re sliding Jeb Bush into place, and he’ll have enough clout to pull the party behind him – and even to take a different stance than the Grover/Limbaugh crap. He’s also got the charisma – and he’d never agree to being a VP to someone whose light shines duller than his – unless he knew it was his opening to the nomination with minimal work and no primary mid-slinging.

JAY CARNEY SCHOOLS SPEAKER BOEHNER ON WHO REALLY SUPPORTS THE MIDDLE CLASS

At the press briefing yesterday, a reporter asked Press Secretary Jay Carney to respond to ‘Speaker In Name Only’ John Boehner’s comment that President Obama doesn’t give a damn about middle class Americans. Jay Carney found the comment astonishing and reminded Speaker Boehner that it is President Obama who really supports the middle class. In fact, it has been the principal preoccupation of his presidency.

    ========================================

Q I’ll squeeze in my political question here. Speaker Boehner today, in talking about the President, said, “He doesn’t give a damn about middle-class Americans.” And I wanted to get your reaction to this in terms of whether you think that this is another day in Washington politics, or whether that kind of comment about the President’s motivations in any way crosses the line.

MR. CARNEY: I had not heard that comment. I would simply say that the President’s focus from day one in office has been on the middle class, has been on restoring the security that had been eroding for the middle class for a decade in this country. All of his domestic initiatives are focused principally on the middle class. The proposal that he has been asking Congress to act on immediately is a middle-class tax cut — a tax cut that would go to 98 percent of American taxpayers. It is the principal preoccupation of his presidency. It is the reason why he ran for this office. It is the reason why he is running for reelection.

It is, I think, astounding to hear a criticism like that when you simply bring it back to the policy debate. In an effort to move the ball down the field, if you will, in terms of our economic challenges, the President, acknowledging that there are big disagreements on some issues, did what you do when you seek compromise, which is find common ground. And he said, look, we all support, Republicans and Democrats alike — at least we all say we support — extending tax cuts for the middle class. Let’s do it. Let’s do it tomorrow. Pass those tax cuts now — the President will sign them into law.

I believe Speaker Boehner opposes that. I hope his opposition changes. It is a very difficult argument to make, I think, to middle-class Americans that you believe your taxes should go up unless millionaires and billionaires get a tax cut.

I’ll happily talk at length about the President’s record supporting and helping to make more secure the middle class.

    • 232 desertflower
      July 19, 2012 at 11:23 am

      http://www.balloon-juice.com/2012/07/18/how-mitt-saved-the-olympics/

When the dust settled, Mitt’s lobbying effort brought over $1.5 Billion to the SLC Games. In 2000 the GAO did an audit of US taxpayer support for Olympic Games in the country. Taxpayers spent $74,654,000 for the LA Games in 1984; and $608,512,000 for the 1996 in Atlanta. These were both summer Olympics and so you would expect them to cost more. But, the 2002 Winter Games in SLC blew the doors off the Treasury—taxpayers paid $1.5 Billion to bail out Mitt.
For the LA GAmes, taxpayers only paid for the Federal role during the games. In the Atlanta and SLC Games, taxpayers paid the most money to help the host city prepare their infrastructure. We spent $423,919,000 to help Atlanta and almost thrice that ($1.25 Billion) for Salt Lake City—and this is where the post-Olympics scandals can be found.
Look at the map on the top of this post. It is from the GAO report. It shows the 10 major road and highway projects funded by taxpayers for the Winter Games. Where these roads went, and who had control of the land was at the core of the grift. It is an old school scandal (remember Chinatown) and a scandal that can be mapped. The land around these taxpayer funded projects were owned by some people before the Olympics game to town. Then other folks magically got control of the land. And then the Federal Government built out the infrastructure to these parcels (roads, water sewer, etc.). Next, it could be developed. It could be rented and sold and resold. Businesses could start. New communities could start. Utah could have an economic boom—all because taxpayers bailed out the Olympics.
And yet, the folks who profited from this bailout—Mitt and all his pals—will pretend that they saved the fucking Olympics and that they were brilliant Masters of the Universe who create wealth and profit. The fact that they owe everything to their ability to fleece US taxpayers will never be mentioned.

The Fleecing of Americans …make no mistake!

Now I feel truly sad for anyone that has had to deal with serious illness but Ann has had access to the best medical care money can buy while her husband brays about eliminating preventative care for others who don’t have access to all their gobs of money. I hate the way they send her out when things get too hot for that coward Mitt to handle – and then we are supposed to refrain from criticizing her because of her illnesses. I just tweeted exactly this. My friend with MS is racked with worry about what her insurance company will cover or not cover. Imagine someone who can’t afford insurance or lost insurance in the recession.

When Reagan was shot, my husband — who grew up incredibly poor — made a comment on how much easier it is to get well when you don’t have to worry about insurance or losing your job or if your mortgage will be paid during your illness.

MS is not easy for anyone. I’ve known several people with this horrible disease. But it is so much easier to get well when you are without worry about losing everything you have to your disease and a callous government that won’t provide basic health care to its citizens.

Republicans are monsters. Anyone who continues to call themselves Republican — and I’m talking to YOU, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe and John McCain — has aligned themselves with cruelest party in American history. Shame on all of them.

BAIN CAPITAL STARTED WITH HELP OF OFFSHORE INVESTORS

By Joseph Tanfani, Melanie Mason and Matea Gold

    ————————————————–

    Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — When Mitt Romney launched Bain Capital in 1984, he struggled at first to raise enough money for the untested venture. Old-money families like the Rothschilds turned down the young Boston consultant.

So he and his partners tapped an eclectic roster of investors, raising more than a third of their first $37-million investment fund from wealthy foreigners.

Most of the foreign investors’ money came through corporations registered in Panama, then known for tax advantages and unusual banking secrecy.

Previously unreported details, documented in Massachusetts corporate filings and other public records, show that Bain Capital was enmeshed in the largely opaque world of international high finance from its very inception.

Moving Right Along To Phase Two of the Case Against Romney

    By Ed Kilgore

    ——————————–

New York’s Jonathan Chait dissected the two-phased Obama strategy for taking down Mitt Romney well before I did (undermining Romney’s Bain-based “Mr. Fix-It” credentials while showing he’s no friend to middle-class Americans, and then going after the Ryan Budget as a reflection of his personal preferences and hidden policy agenda). So I’m paying close attention to Jon’s guess that Phase II is beginning right now:
    .
    .
The Obama campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s business record and personal finances will probably continue for a long time. But I think that, when the campaign is remembered in history, they will not be seen as the central element but rather as a prelude. The main event is going to be a fight over the priorities of the Paul Ryan budget.

MITT SELECTIVELY EDITS HIS TAX RETURNS AND STATEMENTS MADE BY PRESIDENT OBAMA

When wrenching quotes from context is the game plan

    By Steve Benen

    ————————————–

But if you watch the clip, what’s truly amazing is the hack-job editing. Team Romney didn’t just take Obama’s words out of context, the GOP campaign moved sentences around in order to make the president express an anti-business sentiment he does not believe and never expressed.

    Indeed, this one’s a doozy.
    .
    .
Of course, if the Obama quote were really as outrageous as Republicans claim, creative editing wouldn’t have been necessary — Romney could have shared the real quote, with the context. That he hasn’t reinforces the fact that the president’s sentiment wasn’t offensive at all. Indeed, when the Romney campaign heard the line, they ignored for five days because they didn’t see it as controversial.

In the larger context, Romney has spent the last few days saying he can’t release his tax returns because rascally Democrats might take tidbits from the materials out of context, making him look bad. The irony is rich.

I REALLY do not like she or her husband- but until I heard & saw them in action I had no opinion of them- they have created my opinion of them with their own words/ attitude. These are neither nice or kind people, they are as you say ‘entitled’ people. Which makes them both stupid & dangerous to the majority of us.

There are going to be many, many nasty polls this summer. The polling “entities” are going to jack the numbers every which way because their first duty is to a tight race and to their pocketbooks, not the people of the United States of America. The are feeding the beast – the American press who are hungry for sensationalized headlines.

I see that Queen Ann was talking about the fact that they give their church 10% of their money…the thing with that is…THEY HAVE TO BY ORDER OF THE CHURCH!

    http://mormon.org/faq/church-tithing

Gordon B. Hinckley, prior President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said: “Our major source of revenue is the ancient law of the tithe. Our people are expected to pay 10 percent of their income to move forward the work of the Church. The remarkable and wonderful thing is that they do it. Tithing is not so much a matter of dollars as it is a matter of faith. It becomes a privilege and an opportunity, not a burden. Our people believe in the word of God as set forth in the book of Malachi, that the Lord will open the windows of heaven and pour down blessings that there will not be room enough to receive them (Malachi 3:8-10). Moving and touching is the testimony of Latter-day Saints throughout the world concerning this the Lord’s law for the financing of His work.”

What If “The Newsroom” Really Can Make a Difference?

By Chez Pazienza – July 19,2012

    —————————————

I’m not sure if The Newsroom really has the power to overhaul television news from the ground up or if it can change many of the cynical minds within the business, but if it manages to light a fire under even a few asses of the people who once believed that the news matters, who knows what that might lead to. What if TV journalists started looking at the fictional News Night and thinking, “Why the hell can’t we do that?”

It’s the same way that I think “The West Wing” opened up people’s belief that they could actually admire their government, their President. That their President and his administration could be human, but raise the standard for how a government serves the people, and that idealism can be turned into practical efforts. It made people hope for better. And they got it. (And it doesn’t hurt that Matt Santos’ character was based on then-Senator Obama).

I hope “Newsroom” has the same effect.

Stupid Shit Said By Wealthy Privileged Women

“Let them eat cake.” – Marie Antoinette

“We don’t pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes.” – Leona Helmsley

“And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this – this is working very well for them.” – Barbara Bush

“…we’ve given all you people need to know” – Ann Romney

outside of willard romney, another willard is having some trouble…actor fred willard was caught in an adult movie theater last night, um, satisfying himself. and i’m not making this up, his next movie is (was now?) titled “the yank.” kid you not.

anyway, back to watching the media do exactly as i said they’d do this week, and i see mark halperin is leading the charge with his “analysis” (the guy who said every bad thing that happened to mccain was actually good for mccain and that PBO is a “dick”, yea that astute political pundit), is saying the last weeks have been great for mittbot, and see, the polls prove it!! never mind the fact that these last two weeks were about as bad as can be for a presidential candidate, yet magically polls show mittbot on the rise.

two days ago, there was all kinds of talk about mittbot ending his campaign it was going so badly, and now he’s even again…it’s magic! one good thing about this predicted behavior of the media and polls is that mittbot will probably stay in the race since it’ll give him some false confidence, which is definitely good news for president obama!!

That’s fantastic, given the state of the world and the latest UN Veto by Russia and China. just what the world needs – a bunch of nincompoops trying to run the world without even knowing anything about it (except for the Paris mansion they hid out in during the war and the countries in which they’re hiding their money).

Ambassador Rice walked out as the Syrian UN rep started to speak … that was after she bitterly scolded Russia & China and said ‘we’ll do it our way, now’ in so many words 🙂

Great Job You all on the tweets about “Queen Ann”‘s YouPeople crazy talk.

I wished Rev. Al, Rachel, Ed or Lawrence could cover her crazy talk about “we are showing no more tax returns” (paraphrasing) nonsense.

The pressure has to be increased a thousandfold to see those tax returns! There lies all the answers to her and her husband’s plans for the common folks, which are not good my friends!!

Janet Napolitano is holding tough, cool, calm and collected while being questioned by notable crazies like Louie Gohmert, Steve King and now she has Dan Quayle. And there were numerable others. Homeland Security Oversight Committee on immigration. Gohmert about blew a gasket. She speaks well with a reasonable, sincere voice.

Obama Video Mashes Up ‘You Didn’t Build That’ With Similar Romney Speech

As TPM noted on Wednesday, Mitt Romney’s recent remarks on the value of public roads, bridges, teachers, and firefighthers and President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech made a virtually identical point about government investment. The Obama campaign is out now with a video highlighting their similarities:

Expect Keystone to be back on the table if we hit 100 per barrel!

you know what, it doesn’t matter any specific issue that might come up. the media/republicans will find anything, no matter good or bad, and portray it in a way that’s negative toward the obamas. my god, they even turned the kiss-cam loving moment into a negative. within one day, they were turning the killing of osama bin laden as a negative toward PBO. there is nothing obama can do about it, and either can we, other than ignore them and get people in our lives to shut that stuff out completely.
