The disturbing news of the day: Initial jobless claims surged back above 380K to 386K for the week. And since jobless claims are among the best high-frequency datapoints, it’s always concerning when they spike.
But remember that last week was unusually low (probably thanks to July 4) so this week may just be canceling out.
What Mitt Romney defines as “small businesses” includes millionaires and billionaires, law partners, hedge fund managers, and passive investors. Under this definition, over half of the 400 highest earners in the United States—a group that averages over $200 million each in taxable income—would be considered “small businesses.”
Even under this flawed definition of small business, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center noted that approximately 97 percent of taxpayers with small business income would be completely unaffected by the President’s plan. This has been confirmed by the independent Congressional Research Service, which concluded that “only a small fraction of businesses will be affected [by allowing the temporary income tax cuts to expire for people earning over $250,000 a year], around 2 percent to 3 percent.”
As the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities has pointed out, even the very small percentage of small business owners who would be affected by tax increases on high-income households are unlikely to respond by reducing hiring or new investment [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 4/24/2012].

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An hour before President Obama is to kick off a Florida campaign swing here, the White House announced it will expedite two major port projects in the state.
Projects at the Ports of Jacksonville and Miami, along with others in New York, Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., will be fast-tracked, the White House said, as part of 43 projects to be expedited by executive order this summer.
The Jacksonville project will include a feasibility study, conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers, into deepening the port. Federal money will also go toward permitting and review of a new container facility at the port. Each project is to be completed by the summer of 2013.
The other port projects involve deepening the channels in Miami, New York, Charleston and Savannah, and raising the height of the Bayonne Bridge that connects New Jersey with Staten Island, N.Y.
The projects are part of the White House’s “We Can’t Wait” program.

Mitt Romney’s campaign has fired back at questions about his tenure at Bain Capital and his failure to release tax returns by blaming President Obama’s campaign for not wanting to talk about the economy. Given a chance to talk about the economy this morning, though, a Romney adviser failed to deliver specifics about how his plan would boost economic growth while also balancing the budget, as Romney claims he will do.
She does not know anything about what Robme did in MA as Governor NOR what he plans to do. Team Obama can use her statements about Gov brought down unemployment (NO he did not), balanced the budget (NO he did not) and created jobs (47th out of 50 in Job creation).
This is the state of “objective” journalism in this country. Peter Alexander was just bragging that Romney and Romney’s sons now refer to him as “Romney’s 6th Son.” He and Mitchell giggled like pre-pubescent children. Wow. Just wow. I don’t know if I’m supposed to laugh or shake my head in sadness.

You have to wonder if in future Mitt is going to “outsource” all questions about his finances to his wife, and then object that anyone who complains about it is engaging in personal attacks on his family. That tactic would certainly be consistent with his general habit of expressing outrage when critics look at his biography or his tax-and-budget plans and suggest things just don’t add up.

I knew it…McCain is going to be on Piers Morgan on TeaNN tonight to say that he “saw nothing wrong” with Romney’s tax returns. All this yelling and shouting about Bachmann’s “Muslim” comment was simply to warm folks up before he went on the media defending Mitt Romney and trying to get off the subject of Romney’s tax returns.
The fact that it took McCain more than a whole week to “prepare” this defense should tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about his credibility on Piers Morgan. McCain is SCUM OF THE EARTH.
Actually, they picked Palin hastily and in a panicked state. There was something in Romney’s returns, which is why it took McCain so long to just come out and say that there was nothing in those returns. If there were truly nothing in those returns, he would have tweeted or said something as soon as those ads were released. He would have been on the Sunday shows yapping away as well. John McCain is lying and he knows it, and we know it. This whole issue with Bachman and Huma was a coordinated GOP distraction with the added benefit of putting McCain in people’s good books before he went on Teevee defending Mitt Romney.
Using McCain to discuss Willard’s tax returns is ridiculous. Signing his return is the only contact McCain has had with a 1040 in his life. He didn’t even know how many houses he had. He certainly would not be aware if a Swiss bank filing was included with a particular return.
They have accountants reviewing those documents. That’s why all Presidential candidates release returns. Obviously, this is an important issue when candidates are being vetted. I believe that the McCain campaign was privy to some of the issues related to Romney’s return – hence his utter silence over the past week.
I understand, but the accountants will not be with McCain tonight. It took accountants weeks to determine there were missing Swiss bank filings for 2010. McCain is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. One of my favorites from 2008 was when he said Palin knew more about energy than anybody else in the country.
So you’re telling me that McCain was completely oblivious to the reason his campaign didn’t select Romney as VP? I know that McCain isn’t very smart but you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand the implications of not having your taxes in order. If McCain is unable to understand a basic concept like this, then why is he qualified to be a member of our legislative branch passing laws that affect day to day lives????
It’s completely meaningless. To all Republicans they wouldn’t be bothered by how Romney made his money or what taxes he paid. They are clueless as to what matters to real people in the real world. I wouldn’t expect McCain to have a real world assessment of Mitt’s taxes.

A comment on Twitter reminded me that FLOTUS’s father, Fraser Robinson, suffered from M.S.
I found a website about M.S. (http://www.life-in-spite-of-ms.com) and read this about him: “Fraser Robinson suffered from multiple sclerosis, an affliction that did not stop him from going to work every day in Chicago’s water department.” Huh – he shoulda just got a dancing horse instead.
On the webiste, there is a listing of Famous People with M.S., it’s the sixth link under “Fun Stuff” (??) Fraser Robinson’s story is interesting and inspiring. Ms. Ann-toinette is there, also, but I don’t care to read it.
I also have MS. Right now I am numb from head to toe, but I don’t complain. As a matter of fact I just went a couple of months ago and got me a part time job. MS is a tough disease, and for many of us living simply on Disability is not an option. I was only 27 when I was diagnosed. I had a great job that I had to give up. To the GOP I am one of those people who “depend on the government.”

I have a friend with MS now. One day she’s fine, the next day she is numb like you. She never knows from day to day what she will be able to do or not. W
When I was in college, I watched a friend, a gifted dancer, waste away to nothing from this disease.
When I was in college in the late 60’s I remember we paid $80/year for health insurance that covered damn near everything. My friend in the late 60’s had less worry than my friend now, who fights with her insurance company all the time. It’s a disgrace.
One of the most important things for people with MS is for them not to be stressed out or have too much stress. People who have to live in the real world unlike Ann Romney have real stress. although I have determinedly been keeping my stress to a minimum.
That’s my point, exactly. Stress in general is anathema to getting well but it is particularly damaging to MS patients. I’m proud of you for keeping stress at bay. Ann Romney has no idea what regular Americans go through in order to battle disease. I am sorry for her ills, but I have no respect for her. Vale told TPM that the labor-backed Rafalca campaign has been in the works for “months” and will likely come in the form of an online campaign once the Olympics start. Workers’ Voice is still working out the details of the campaign, but Vale promised it would go forward.
Vale said the attacks aren’t aimed at Ann Romney, and he dismissed her complaints over the efforts.
“This literally has absolutely nothing to do with that. What she does in therapy is all the way over on one side — this is an entirely different horse,” he said. “They have eight of them. And [Mitt] made so much money outsourcing American jobs that he can afford an entirely separate dancing horse to shoot off to London in a private jet. This has literally nothing to do with Ann Romney.”

All this yelling and shouting about Bachmann’s “Muslim” comment was simply to warm folks up before he went on the media defending Mitt Romney and trying to get off the subject of Romney’s tax returns.
The fact that it took McCain more than a whole week to “prepare” this defense should tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about his credibility on Piers Morgan. McCain is SCUM OF THE EARTH.

The way McCain vetted Palin it is unlikely they spent a lot of time investigating the details of 23 years of Willard’s tax returns.
Actually, they picked Palin hastily and in a panicked state. There was something in Romney’s returns, which is why it took McCain so long to just come out and say that there was nothing in those returns. If there were truly nothing in those returns, he would have tweeted or said something as soon as those ads were released. He would have been on the Sunday shows yapping away as well. John McCain is lying and he knows it, and we know it. This whole issue with Bachman and Huma was a coordinated GOP distraction with the added benefit of putting McCain in people’s good books before he went on Teevee defending Mitt Romney.
Using McCain to discuss Willard’s tax returns is ridiculous. Signing his return is the only contact McCain has had with a 1040 in his life. He didn’t even know how many houses he had. He certainly would not be aware if a Swiss bank filing was included with a particular return.
They have accountants reviewing those documents. That’s why all Presidential candidates release returns. Obviously, this is an important issue when candidates are being vetted. I believe that the McCain campaign was privy to some of the issues related to Romney’s return – hence his utter silence over the past week.
I understand, but the accountants will not be with McCain tonight. It took accountants weeks to determine there were missing Swiss bank filings for 2010. McCain is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. One of my favorites from 2008 was when he said Palin knew more about energy than anybody else in the country.
So you’re telling me that McCain was completely oblivious to the reason his campaign didn’t select Romney as VP? I know that McCain isn’t very smart but you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand the implications of not having your taxes in order. If McCain is unable to understand a basic concept like this, then why is he qualified to be a member of our legislative branch passing laws that affect day to day lives????
This will not make this issue go away.
It’s completely meaningless. To all Republicans they wouldn’t be bothered by how Romney made his money or what taxes he paid. They are clueless as to what matters to real people in the real world. I wouldn’t expect McCain to have a real world assessment of Mitt’s taxes.

I found a website about M.S. (http://www.life-in-spite-of-ms.com) and read this about him: “Fraser Robinson suffered from multiple sclerosis, an affliction that did not stop him from going to work every day in Chicago’s water department.” Huh – he shoulda just got a dancing horse instead.
On the webiste, there is a listing of Famous People with M.S., it’s the sixth link under “Fun Stuff” (??) Fraser Robinson’s story is interesting and inspiring. Ms. Ann-toinette is there, also, but I don’t care to read it.

I also have MS. Right now I am numb from head to toe, but I don’t complain. As a matter of fact I just went a couple of months ago and got me a part time job. MS is a tough disease, and for many of us living simply on Disability is not an option. I was only 27 when I was diagnosed. I had a great job that I had to give up. To the GOP I am one of those people who “depend on the government.”

I have a friend with MS now. One day she’s fine, the next day she is numb like you. She never knows from day to day what she will be able to do or not. W
When I was in college, I watched a friend, a gifted dancer, waste away to nothing from this disease.
When I was in college in the late 60’s I remember we paid $80/year for health insurance that covered damn near everything. My friend in the late 60’s had less worry than my friend now, who fights with her insurance company all the time. It’s a disgrace.
One of the most important things for people with MS is for them not to be stressed out or have too much stress. People who have to live in the real world unlike Ann Romney have real stress. although I have determinedly been keeping my stress to a minimum.
That’s my point, exactly. Stress in general is anathema to getting well but it is particularly damaging to MS patients. I’m proud of you for keeping stress at bay. Ann Romney has no idea what regular Americans go through in order to battle disease. I am sorry for her ills, but I have no respect for her. She’s a disgrace and her ilk should be kept as far away from public service as possible.
