    The Kitchen Sink: More Desperation

by Michael Tomasky Jul 18, 2012 1:46 PM EDT

How many people are going to care that Obama did “a little blow, when [he] could afford it.” as he puts it in his first book? I just don’t think that many. The guy is the president. He’s been there for four years. He’s not a friend of terrorists (far from it). Bill Ayres is not the secretary of education, and Al Sharpton is not the attorney general. An incumbent is a known quantity.
Romney is a just a whiny boy. What he doesn’t understand, because of the weird morality of the world he lives in, is that when you pull stunts like telling the world you left a job without revealing it was only a leave of absence, and you say you did no work but continued to make piles of money, and you don’t see why it’s a problem, you have impugned your own integrity. No one else need do it for you.

Hahaha….so hope Christie explodes again close to the RNC convention and becomes the news. That’ll serve Romney right for going with a disgusting neanderthal.

The products Capital One’s vendors pitched came with names such as “”Privacy Guard,” “Credit Inform Premier,” or “Payment Protection,” and they would have been of questionable value even if all the details had been fully disclosed.

But two federal regulators, including the new  Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, said today that the products had been pushed deceptively by bank-affiliated telemarketers – some for nearly a decade. They ordered Capital One to pay about $150 million in refunds to about 2.5 million cardholders and a total of $60 million in penalties.

In a joint action with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the CFPB also ordered Capital One to pay a $25 million penalty for tactics used “to pressure or mislead consumers” into buying the add-on services when they activated their credit cards, and the OCC’s order added $35 million in penalties. The consumer-protection agency said marketers targeted the pitches at customers with low credit scores or low credit limits, and ordered $140 million in refunds.

The CFPB, which turns a year old this Saturday, described the action as its “first public enforcement action.” It said the order resulted from an examination of the bank, a subsidiary of a Virginia financial institution with about $295 billion in total assets. The OCC’s consent order includes an additional $10 million in restitution for unfair billing practices.

    Yeah but…

Capital One’s headquarters are located in McLean, VA, but their operations are located near Richmond in Eric Cantor’s district.

So, if the Robney camp thinks the attacks on Bain are not working? Then, why the aggressive and demonstrative reaction from them?

  12. July 18, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Surfing around the comments in Talking Points Memo, I came across this great line from Steve LaBonne: “I used to think Obama was the luckiest politician of my lifetime because of the way his opponents have self-destructed. But it’s beginning to dawn on me that it’s skill, not luck. He’s a master at needling his opponents until they go off the deep end, while remaining cool, calm and collected himself. Fun to watch.”

Yes, indeed! Kind of like that chess-master image I’ve heard before!

    • July 18, 2012 at 2:37 pm

I found another one further down in TPM, from kaneblues – a variation on that Direct TV commercial that’s out in several versions now:
“When your candidate is Mitt Romney, you get angry. When you get angry, you go blow off steam. When you go blow off steam, accidents happen. When accidents happen, you get an eye patch. When you get an eye patch, people think you’re tough. When people think you’re tough, people want to see how tough. And when people want to see how tough, you wake up in a roadside ditch. Don’t wake up in a roadside ditch! Get rid of Mitt Romney and upgrade to President Barack Obama.”

What losing one’s composure looks like

    By Steve Benen

What’s more, as Igor Volsky noted, various Romney surrogates spent yesterday effectively accusing the president of being a foreigner.

This, for those keeping score at home, is what it looks like when a campaign loses its composure.
I’m also not sure what makes Romney and his aides think attacks that flopped in 2008 will be any more effective in 2012.

It would appear that Team Romney, 110 days before the election, still believes their target audience is Fox News viewers, Limbaugh listeners, and folks who hang out at RedState.com. They’re the ones who want to hear about cocaine, who believe Obama wasn’t “vetted,” and who see value in fighting the last war all over again.

But they’re also a tiny sliver of the population, who bear little resemblance to the American mainstream.

Willard is going apoplectic in Ohio saying PBO is against free enterprise and PBO said Steve Jobs did not create Apple. He looks like a fool. Wonder how long this stupidity will be their theme?

He sounds hysterical. He’s coming undone. He’s not looking very shall we say “presidential”. The thought of this man being anywhere near the Oval Office is horrifying.

Good afternoon TOD fam. great news — at the beginning of the year I moved my municipal accounts from TD to a small independent community bank. While in the bank today, the Branch mgr struck up a conversation regarding my t-shirt (an ’08 street vendor design). The conversation drifted to policies, Voter ID, etc. Great conversation over all. Bottom line, the bank is going to serve as a voter registration point and will educate folks on Voter ID! Love my small town!

    • July 18, 2012 at 4:00 pm

My daughter and I were down in Bowling Green Ohio yesterday and I was pleased to see quite a voter registration display and registration materials in a prominent place in this college town’s popular coffee shop Grounds for Thought.
