Just seeing you guys has lifted my spirits tremendously! They took pity on me once I showed my ‘foreign ‘ driver’s license and signed a little piece of paper. I have no idea what’s been going on and am still in the shivering addict stage. Did anyone post today’s focus? Oka, enough about me. I’m going to use the little time I have to see what you all have been up to.

Oh, I forgot. Good afternoon Chips & TODville! 😆 😆

    A BJ post

The press may not be able to handle it, but it sure looks like the Obama campaign can. They line up a series of attacks on Mitt Romney’s background and character, make sure they mesh with their broader theme that the Republicans exist solely to dick the middle class in the eye on behalf of of a coterie of disgustingly wealthy fuckheads, and then start pumping out the ads. The press. in thrall to the Ghost of David Broder say what they always say: “Democrats claim that Mitt Romney is a soulless automaton hellbent on sending every American job possible to China. Republicans disagree!”

Now, is the press actually doing its job untangling fact from fiction? No, it’s not.

But Barack Obama doesn’t give a shit. By turning Mitt’s record at Bain into a “controversy”, they’ve damaged the rationale for his candidacy pretty goddamn badly as it is. Axelrod and friends took a page out of Karl Rove’s playbook, squeegeed off the slime, and are now using it to give Mitt Romney ten thousand paper cuts.

With that great post, gunnite folks

      July 14, 2012 at 3:19 pm

not really liking this comparison to rove that i’ve seeing around lately. team obama isn’t taking “a page out karl rove’s playbook.” first and foremost, team obama is truthful and not taking things people said out of context to give it the exact opposite meaning. team obama isn’t doing any projection whatsoever, and so on. these are hallmarks of what rove does, not to mention that rove just does classic republican tactics that were taught to him. rove is overrated anyway.

      • July 14, 2012 at 4:17 pm

It will only backfire on them anyway, as rove is such a mini-god in their own sleazy playground. If he is the finest among them, how can it have a negative effect on OFA? check.

      • 68 susanne
        July 14, 2012 at 4:25 pm

i agree. nothing about rove is pertinent here because he is evil. we don’t need to copy evil to win.

      • 69 nospin
        July 14, 2012 at 4:52 pm

the comparison is based on the effectiveness of a strategy. PO strategy is effective. Cold, calculating, disciplined and effective. He is playing to win.

The fact that PO’s strategy is based on truth and Rove’s was based on lies is not something that is being debated. We know that there is a clear difference there. PO re-wrote a new playbook in 2008 when he ran against the Clinton machine and honed it for the 2012 campaign. He is playing hard ball in a way that not even Rove was prepared for and it is working.

        July 14, 2012 at 5:09 pm

I do agree, 4more. Everything that comes out of the Rove shop is smear and lies, like undermining John Kerry’s military record when he was a decorated war hero. The Obama campaign is shedding light on the absolute deceit that is Mitt Romney and showing that the principle accomplishment he is so proud of is actually a sinking wormhole.

In view of the fact that Romney just “signs things without knowing about them, or taking responsibility for them….this is even MORE SCARY than it already was! (DK comment from the link above)

    It was Grover Norquist…. (49+ / 0-)
who recently said, it’s OK for conservatives to vote for Mitt because:

He can sign his name and he will follow orders.

‘Pick a Republican with enough working digits to handle a pen to become president of the United States,’ Norquist told CPAC attendees.
‘This is a change for Republicans: the House and Senate doing the work with the president signing bills. His job is to be captain of the team, to sign the legislation that has already been prepared.’

The Republican leaders in Congress are now far more important then the president, Norquist added, and all they need is a compliant president to sign their legislation.

‘All we have to do is replace Obama,’ Norquist said.

‘We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don’t need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Ryan budget.’

‘We just need a president to sign this stuff. We don’t need someone to think it up or design it. The leadership now for the modern conservative movement for the next 20 years will be coming out of the House and the Senate.’

Looks like PBO’s team not only figured it out, but has the perfect test dummy in Robme to use it to perfection! Good lord. There is not enough popcorn in the world for this show! My only worry that this is all planned. To use Mitt to get through the primary, implode, and have Jeb or Fat Boy from NJ get the nomination. Avoiding the primary. “My goal is to make Utah proud, make America proud,” Romney said in his acceptance speech. “Sure, the managers have messed up big time, but the athletes haven’t, and our job is to go to work for the athletes.”

Leavitt then declared, “Olympic corruption did not start here, but today it ends here. Utah from this day forward moves forward.” The crowd erupted into sustained applause.

But one of the first questions asked in the news conference that followed was whether Romney was using the Olympics as a political platform.

“No,” he responded, adding he intended to return to Boston to “continue the work that I’ve had there in the investment business.”

    Read that last sentence again….*********************************************

    • 105 desertflower
      July 14, 2012 at 3:51 pm

      From this link:

Ken Bullock believes Romney saw an opportunity in the Olympics after losing his bid for the Senate in Massachusetts.

“This was part of his game plan,” he asserts, believing Romney thought, ” ‘I’m going to come here, get a national profile [and] be able to look at how I can position myself so that I can move into higher office.’ ”

“He’s an opportunist,” Ken Bullock adds. “And he took advantage of that.”

“I’ve been given an enormous responsibility, and an entire country and the Olympic team from the United States and the world, to a certain extent, expect me to do the job well,” Romney said. “And I want to fulfill that responsibility.”

This image of Olympic savior was actually cast in collector-quality enameled metal cloisonne pins produced by the Salt Lake Olympic committee.

Critic Ken Bullock has them in his Olympic pin collection.

“We have Valentine’s ones with all the Olympic mascots around saying, ‘We love you, Mitt,’ ” Bullock says, as he pulls up images of the pins on his computer.

“We have him pulling a sled of some sort where some of the mascots are saying, ‘Are we there yet, Mitt?’ ”

Ken Bullock scoffs at what he calls “the Superman” pin, which features Romney “with a Clark Kent chin,” wrapped in an American flag.

“I don’t know how to put words to describe how narcissistic they are,” Bullock says.

Three Olympic pin collectors and experts consulted by NPR say they’ve never seen pins like these featuring the CEO of an Olympic organizing committee.

Ouch! Narcissistic to say the least.

      • 106 desertflower
        July 14, 2012 at 4:01 pm

Some things never change: (from the NPR link)

In fact, Bullock says, Romney was a “cheapskate” desperate to erase the $400 million operating budget deficit and restore confidence in the organizing effort. He traveled the country himself trying to reassure skittish corporate sponsors, raising $800 million, according to Bullock.

Romney also slashed spending, even canceling catering for board meetings and making sure TV cameras were on hand when he decided to sell pizza at his first board function as CEO. He paid $5 per pizza, cut each pie into eight slices, charged a dollar a slice, and ended up with a $3 profit per pizza.

“That type of mentality and message reverberated throughout the organization,” Fraser Bullock says. “Everybody knew that’s what we were going to do. We were going to be responsible with every penny.”

And we are in a battle, we can get over confident, or think that this election is in the bag for POTUS. We have to do whatever we can to help re-elect this President, donate, volunteer, register voters, talk to our friends, and neighbors, make sure people are aware of the Voter ID, and help them get the ID if we can.

I think Romney is really damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Had he admitted to being involved with Bain after 1999, then he’s guilty of outsourcing jobs. Of course, jobs were outsourced BEFORE 1999, but the companies that have been named in the Obama campaign ads are specific companies. Of course by claiming he had no involvement with Bain after 1999 makes the SEC forms fraudulent. How does he worm his way how of this? I don’t think he can. If all us blow up twitter & other social media, the MSM will have to address this. I say don’t let the MSM off the hook. Email, tweet, call and insist they give this story the legs it most definitely should have.

agreed. ‘bain’ now represents r-money’s lying, his greed, his waffling, his defensiveness, his shiftiness, his tax evasions, his arrogance, and on and on.

adding ‘-gate’ casts it in the role of a campaign kerfuffle, something from the past. we can call it ‘baingate’ in 2013 if we want, but not now.

Twice when the Obama 2008 campaign ran into trouble over Jeremiah Wright and the involvement of Rezko in buying his house, he employed two different methods to defuse them, neither of which Romney has used here: give a speech and sit before the combined editorial boards of the Sun-Time and Tribune and allowed them to question them until they were satisfied. But then, Barack Obama had nothing to hide. Romney obviously does.

Not only did PBO have nothing to hide, he didn’t do anything wrong. The Rev. Wright thing was taken totally out of context and the Rezko thing was also stretched beyond the limits of truth re: PBO purchase of a small piece of property to expand the yard around his house.

      They had nothing but bluster…

THIS Bain issue is totally different. Either Myth R-money either lied to the SEC or is lying to the American Public. Since lying to the American public isn’t a felony, I think he’s isn’t going to flip-flop on this one!! 😆 😆

      • July 14, 2012 at 4:39 pm

        So true, isonprize!!

And, note, he’s got several intermingled lies regarding Bain – not just the SEC, but the MA State Ballot Commission, potentially the MA State tax officials and the IRS. Even deeper than that are the potential lies he told to Corning, the SEC, Health & Human Services/Medicare, and others regarding Damon Corp. This dude is one sick gangster.

    Campaign Ad Of The Day

What Romney says in this ad is far more misleading, deceptive and untrue than pointing out that Romney remained CEO of Bain through 2002, which is confirmed by the SEC. A reader notes one way in which this whole affair is lethal to the Republican:

This follows on your wise reader of 4:42 Friday who explains why people like Romney play by their own rules. Here is my experience for comparison.

I am a library administrator at a public university in Pennsylvania. Every spring I file a financial disclosure form revealing sources of income beyond my salary. The point is to expose any possible conflicts of interest between myself and individuals or companies with which the university might contract for goods or services. An example of a conflict would be accepting meals, lodging or entertainment from a vendor from whom I purchase access to electronic library content.

What troubles me about Romney is that he is too rich, powerful and important to be asked to follow the same rules of disclosure that an ordinary civil servant follows. He has more in common with a Russian oligarch than a presumptive American government official. He is applying to the people of the United States for the job of leader, but he acts like his immense wealth and power put him above everyone else as regards commonplace expectations of transparency, in even a low-level official.

That’s kind of strange, don’t you think? Such a sense of entitlement in a would-be president should cause Americans to be very wary. How would this translate into actions? Ask yourself this: how would Romney define “conflict of interest”? Does he actually understand the concept?

    I’m not sure he does.

h/t to PoliticalCarnival for this link: http://www.seeingtheforest.com/archives/2012/07/bains_sec_filin.htm

Key point: those SEC forms reassure Bain partners that Romney WAS running things after 1999. Tons of $$ involved. If he wasn’t that’s fraud.

Romney still claims he wasn’t there, that this filing was just a technicality. But this really matters, because the firm had reason to assure business partners that Romney was still running the company. On May 16 I was co-hosting the Fairness Radio radio show. We interviewed a former Bain partner, Ed Conard, who said that Bain’s competitive advantage was the reputation of its management. This is why partners came to them and invested, why companies let them take over, etc. So the people at Bain were very conscious of this.

Bain partnered with investors who were putting tens of millions into deals. They wanted reassurance that the Bain management they were comfortable with was in operation. If Bain was claiming Romney was still there in SEC documents, I think this was fraud, it was about reassuring partners and co-investors and businesses they were buying that their management was in place, stable, and had the reputation that was so important to them.

    This is a big deal.

Also on this link, a radio interview with a Bain managing partner, Ed Conard, who says that Bain’s competitive advantage was the reputation of its management.

      July 14, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Mitt Romney’s resume is shrinking and being ripped to shreds. He’s the one who said it was his business experience as CEO of Bain that was his main qualification for being president. As soon as Bain starts getting some scrutiny, he has a cow and accuses anyone asking questions of being against private equity. The problem is he only wanted to take credit for the positive outcomes. The negative outcomes were not his fault. He can’t/won’t talk about his dismal record as governor of Massachusetts. And running the winter Olympics in 2002 (and Bain) is not the same as running a country. So what do we have left?? Remember, President George W. Bush was the FIRST MBA PRESIDENT and we all know how that turned out.

FLASHBACK: MORE DISHONESTY FROM ROMNEY (And he has the nerve to ask for an apology?)

Romney: ‘I just don’t think president Obama understands America’

By NBC’s Garrett Haake and Ali Weinberg (November 15, 2011)

Romney was referencing remarks made by the president at Saturday’s APEC summit in Hawaii, where he was asked about government policies that serve as impediments to foreign investment in the United States, not about Americans generally.
*** UPDATE *** Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt responds: “Only Mitt Romney would criticize the president for encouraging CEOs to promote the United States abroad in order to create American jobs and attract investment at home. Maybe that’s because when Mitt Romney was a finance executive, he was more focused on outsourcing American jobs and creating profits for investors without any regard for the impact of his decisions on middle class families.”

Obama to Romney: Doesn’t the buck stop with you?

    By Greg Sargent

The Obama campaign is moving the argument away from the details over whether Romney was directly involved in the post-1999 controversial deals and onto the more general question of whether Romney is willing to take responsibility for the activities of a firm during the period in which he was listed as its CEO and chairman.

Account of Romney’s Bain departure has evolved

By Callum Borchers and Brian MacQuarrie

It was not until 2002 that Romney finalized a severance agreement with Bain, a 10-year deal with undisclosed terms that was retroactive to 1999.

Romney’s own words, along with other documentary evidence, appear to challenge his campaign’s assertion in a recent financial disclosure that Romney had “retired” from Bain in 1999 and “since February 11, 1999, Mr. Romney has not had any active role with any Bain Capital entity and has not been involved in the operations of any Bain Capital entity in any way.”

Financial disclosure forms Romney filed in Massachusetts indicate he earned at least $100,000 as a Bain “executive” in 2001 and 2002, separate from investment earnings.

In addition, Bloomberg news service reported Friday, Romney is named as one of two managing members of Bain Capital Investors LLC in annual reports filed in Massachusetts as late as 2002, “adding a new corporate entity to a growing number of Bain-related investments and funds that list the Republican presidential candidate as controlling the company three years after he said he left it.”

Have Romney ever call the President a nice guy? Let me correct myself, have Romney ever call Barack Obama a nice guy, Romney never call him President Obama, that would be giving him to much respect. All I have ever heard Romney call him was Obama. I know Trump haven’t called the President a nice guy, what Trump is saying he doesn’t believe he is President cause he wasn’t born in this country. And one more thing have Mitt Romney being playing nice, if so I haven’t seen it. And how is anyone playing nasty when you are telling the truth, no one is making up lies on Mitt. All Mitt has to do is answer the questions honestly, but then again Mitt Romney don’t know what the word honest mean.
