Even if Mitt Romney didn’t attend a single meeting or utter a single word on behalf of Bain Capital, the fact that he signed those documents means something. You don’t put your signature on something without the expectation of being held accountable. And signing SEC documents has a particular level of accountability – and felonious level of accountability. That’s why CEOs and CFOs are now criminally legible for the actions of their company ever since Sarbanes Oxley legislation, and when they sign for something – it means something. Even though these docs are before the Sarbanes Oxley legislation, signing SEC documents still held some weight. If Mitt misrepresented himself and his oversight of the company, he’s also liable for any losses during that time for misleading his investors.

Also – didn’t some of the Olympic people say that Mitt was kind of hands-off during the Olympics, as well? I could have sworn I read this recently.

    • July 13, 2012 at 10:52 pm

theo, the triple bottom line on the deal is that he owned 100 % of Bain Capital until at least 2003. He has no where to hide; it was ALL HIS. And, I’m sure, that is a big reason he won’t release the tax returns he showed McCain in 2008.

If the use of swiftboat is our side against them, I object. I thought swiftboating referred to lying not uncovering hidden information voters may need to use to determine their votes. I don’t think what was done here on our part should be considered swiftboating.

What a day, what a crazy last few days!!! And it’s only JULY!!! For folks like me, who don’t really understand all this 1999 – 2003 SEC filings stuff with Myth R-money (although I do know it’s serious) here is an EASY question from John Cole at Balloon Juice.

And another thing. If Romney wasn’t the CEO for those three years, who was?

Shouldn’t someone be coming forward to say they were in charge, not Mitt. Wouldn’t there be minutes from a board meeting detailing the line of succession? How about a mass email sent out to everyone at Bain congratulating the new CEO like you would get at every other company in America? These are arrogant fuckers, surely there has to be one Bain brochure with the new non-Mitt CEO standing in front of his office. Surely Bain must have an investor newsletter that would tell investors that Romney was out in 1999 and the new CEO was in charge. Where is all that stuff?

They got no answers to any of the legit questions being asked by the O campaign. Poutrage and distraction is all they got. nd fucking msm enables them but then with their ratings in toilet (recent gallup poll had them in their lowest ratings ever at 21%), they don’t matter anymore.

  6. July 13, 2012 at 10:52 pm

On NBC, “Meet the Press” hosts Romney campaign senior adviser Ed Gillespie and the two Senate whips – Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Jon Kyl of Arizona.

Its political roundtable also features anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, and NAACP President Ben Jealous.

    Any questions???

    TPM Editor’s Blog

    Weak, Weak, Weak
    Josh Marshall-July 13, 2012, 9:56 PM

Honest question: does anyone think Romney helped himself with this round of television interviews? This is more fact-finding than rhetorical. And the people whose opinions I’d be most curious to hear are those of Republican operatives — people who want the answer to be ‘yes’ but are politically sophisticated enough to know if it’s not.

The headline in the Times is “Romney Seeks Obama Apology for Bain Attacks”.

In the Journal “Romney Defends Bain Capital Tenure”.

This is ‘bitch slap’ politics played with a gusto and coldness seldom seen from Democrats, at least since the Bill Clinton days. Asking for an apology is losing. Saying you want something you clearly have no power to get is losing.

There’s a meta-politics Obama is playing by slashing at Romney with suggestions he might be a felon. He’s wounding Romney, who is clearly rattled and angry about the charges, but just as clearly can’t defend himself or strike back. As I’ve noted many times, a thick layer of presidential politics (in a way that’s distinct from US politics at really every other level) resides at the brainstem level of cogitation — with gambits to assert power and demonstrate dominance. Obama looked in control of this situation; Romney didn’t.

TPM Reader JL could barely contain himself …

Bitch slap politics at it’s finest.
Step 1. Obama tells Romney to man up and take responsibility.

    Coming soon …

Step 2. Romney whines that it’s beneath the office.

Step 3. BO Surrogates tell Mitt, you’re running for President for God’s sake. Don’t be such a girly man!!

I love it!! Are we sure Obama’s a Dem?

Did I post this already? http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2012/07/romneys-got-nothing.html

After reviewing all we now know, he says this:

A false SEC filing is a serious offense; to say so is not disgusting. So is potential perjury in 2002 when Romney detailed his continued involvement in Bain-owned enterprises in the period he retained the CEO title and now says he had nothing whatsoever to do with Bain. The SEC filing rules apply to everyone – except, it seems, to Romney, and his well-paid legal and accounting team. They may have so internalized this immunity from any accountability that Romney may indeed genuinely feel disgusted by being called to follow the normal rules, or called out on logical inconsistencies.

I’m getting the feeling that Romney thinks he is above the level of accountability required in a presidential candidate or even in an average ethical businessman. He seems genuinely offended to be directly challenged with facts – which he still won’t address or rebut in detail. So he simply huffs and puffs and uses words like “disgusting” for a perfectly valid charge in the big boy world of presidential politics.

This does not seem to me to be like a candidate ready for prime time.

Jonathan Karl Needs an Adult Diaper

    by BooMan
Fri Jul 13th, 2012 at 11:16:27 PM EST

I wonder if Jonathan Karl thinks he did a good job of questioning Mitt Romney about the controversy surrounding his departure from Bain Capital. I hope Mr. Karl is currently hitting himself in the face with a 2×4 in some sort of ritual penance for dropping the ball.
The first question is like something out of tee-ball. Karl notes that someone in the Obama campaign mentioned that he might have committed a felony, but he doesn’t explain why, and then he just offers Romney a chance to rebut the charge. That’s pathetic, and it doesn’t help inform his viewers about the issue at all. It just makes it sound like an unsubstantiated allegation had been made.

His second question is to ask whether the president should apologize for the behavior of his staff. How’s that for hard-hitting?

With his third question he actually makes a go at being a journalist. He asks Romney if he can avoid being responsible for the actions of Bain Capital when he was the owner, the CEO, and the chairman of the board. But, when Romney insists that he bears zero responsibility for Bain’s action despite his positions, Karl meekly follows up by saying, “So you bear no responsibility?”

And then look at his next question and ask yourself if Sarah Palin could do worse:

KARL: So you don’t disavow what happened at the company, that they may have done things that were wrong, not wrong that you had nothing to do with. would there be something with being associated with Bain Capitol during those years

    http://bobcesca.com/blog-archives/2012/07/bain-aside-romney-trails-on-nearly-every-issue.html

There is the chart from Pew, then this…that I have to agree with!

The significant lead Romney has over the president on reducing the federal deficit is a great example of just how bad the media coverage of the federal deficit has been. Particularly during the summer of last year leading up to the debt ceiling hostage crisis.

President Obama has lowered the deficit since taking office and has passed legislation that will eliminate the deficit within this decade.

The federal deficit was $1.4 trillion in fiscal year 2009. The fiscal 2009 budget was the last budget passed by George W. Bush. The projected federal deficit for fiscal 2012 is $937 billion according to the Congressional Budget Office.

With the elimination of the Bush Tax Cuts included in the Budget Control Act (the debt ceiling deal) the federal deficit may entirely vanish by 2018.

Alternatively, the limited proposals Mitt Romney has debuted during his time running for president would balloon the deficit and add as much as $10 trillion to the national debt.

Let me get this straight: PBO is responsible for every job lost from the moment he was sworn in, jobs that were lost because of Bush’s disastrous economic policies, but Romney is NOT responsible for his OWN policies put in motion as sole shareholder, owner, President and CEO of Bain?

This clip from Martin Bashir’s program today prior to the Romney whine fest this evening was on a previous thread but am reposting here because it is worth watching. Karen Finney stated something interesting, namely that Romney released tax returns in the 90’s when he was running for Senate and got his ass creamed on Bain and negative ads about Bain and lost. When he ran for Gov in 2002 he didn’t release ANY tax returns and won the office. But yet he had no problem turning 23 years worth of tax returns over to McCain to be vetted for VP in 08.

Karen has also worked to improve public education in the public and private sectors.

As spokeswoman and Communications Director for the Democratic National Committee Karen helped guide the DNC’s communications and media strategy for Howard Dean’s “50 State Strategy”, re-branding the Democratic Party, the successful 2006 Congressional elections and DNC strategy for the 2008 presidential campaign. During the Clinton Administration, Karen served as Deputy Press Secretary to then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and as Deputy Director of Presidential Scheduling for President Bill Clinton. Karen has also travelled to all 62 counties in New York State as a Press Secretary for Hillary Clinton’s successful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2000; during the general election in 2004 she travelled with Elizabeth Edwards as her Communications Director.

Romney’s Clear As Mud Bain Explanation

“The problem for Romney, though, is that the tax question inevitably boils down to, “If he has nothing to hide, why doesn’t he just show us his taxes?” The answer to that question is that Romney has never claimed to have nothing to hide. In the returns we’ve already seen, there was plenty that Romney would have preferred to keep hidden, from a Swiss bank account to a shell company in Bermuda. The implication of Romney’s refusal to disclose more is that the political flak he continues to take for his secrecy is still thought to be less painful than the potential public financial colonoscopy. And that will lead many to conclude that he does, indeed, have something to hide.”

A doctor, a lawyer and an engineer were discussing the relative merits of having a wife or a mistress. The lawyer says: “For sure a mistress is better. If you have a wife and want a divorce, it causes all sorts of legal problems.”

The doctor says: “It’s better to have a wife because the sense of security lowers your stress and is good for your health.”

The engineer says: “You’re both wrong. It’s best to have both so that when the wife thinks you’re with the mistress and the mistress thinks you’re with your wife – you can go to the office and get some real work done.

“Honey,” said this husband to his wife, “I invited a friend home for supper.”

“What? Are you crazy? The house is a mess, I haven’t been shopping, all the dishes are dirty, and I don’t feel like cooking a fancy meal!”

    “I know all that.”

“Then why did you invite a friend for supper?”

“Because the poor fool is thinking about getting married.”

    Opps! http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/07/romney-death-by-association-128919.html#.UAC-z8lJc9o.twitter

Mitt Romney, speaking to the Salt Lake Tribune about Bain Capital and his political career in February of 1999, just after he decided to take the job turning around the 2002 Summer Olympics:
I’m not a powder puff…. By that I mean that it’s not that I would never consider laying off workers or closing down a plant to save a company. Unfortunately in the business world I know, the world of troubled companies, many businesses can get better with medicine. But many others require painful, wrenching surgery. I have been involved with companies that concluded they had to close a plant in order to survive. And that’s an awful, awful thing to have happen. And it’s death for a politician to be associated with that.

Why are married women heavier than single women?

Single women come home, see what’s in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what’s in bed and go to the fridge.

    ….

Single women claim that all the good men are married, while all married women complain about their lousy husbands.

This confirms that there is no such thing as a good man.

This also confirms that women are always confused and don’t know what they want.

    ….

    I’m outta here.

We can’t get over confident, we have to continue to fight this because until we win it ain’t over. So we have to do whatever we can to help. Keep registering people, letting them know about the voter ID, helping them get that ID, doing whatever we can. Keep moving FORWARD. Knowing that we are in a battle, but it’a a battle we tend to WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

President Barack Obama has gained an advantage over Republican Mitt Romney in a Pew Research Center Poll showing public confidence in either one’s handling of the economy shifting toward the president in the past month.

Obama leads Romney by 50 percent to 43 percent among registered voters surveyed, Pew reports, with the Republican Party’s presumed presidential nominee losing 3 percentage points of support since its previous poll in early June.

Public opinion on which candidate would do a better job of improving economic conditions has shifted from an advantage for Romney in Pew’s June survey to support for Obama in the latest survey of 2,373 registered voters conducted June 28-July 9.

“Romney has not seized the advantage as the candidate best able to improve the economy,” the Pew Research Center states in its Web-site report on the survey. “In fact, he has lost ground on the issue over the past month.”

What all the fuss about Condi Rice is really all about = STERICYCLE.

The abortion fetus company Bain invested in (during the 1999 period that Romney is now running away from) has the capacity to wreak havoc on the R campaign. If pro lifers get to hear about this story – the way they have been hearing about the SEC filings this week – then MR can kiss a lot of their votes goodbye. Cue Condi Rice speculation nonsense . MR has no intention of selecting Ms Rice as veep and I doubt she would be interested but her sole function (remember she is pro choice) is for her name to be floated so that Romney can then very ostentatiously refuse to select her on the grounds of his firm pro life standards. He does not have the base sewn up – they don’t trust him and this stunt is simply to distract from the Stericycle story. I think the stericycle story has to be out there for every rabid pro lifer to absorb.

If anyone here has any friends/family/co workers/ neighbours who are raging pro lifers please start spreading the news. Also if we can get a list of pro life groups we can do a collective carpet email/twitter bomb.

Anyone interested or agree with tis theory?

    Nice!

    • July 14, 2012 at 7:16 am

Obama is doing an early ad blitz that is going to bury Romney. Romney might be raising all this money, but Obama still has a great deal more raised since the campaign and is spending it in swing states defining his opponent. By the time September rolls around, Romney will be crawling out of Tampa!

      • July 14, 2012 at 7:33 am

I agree, they are defining Robney, and doing a great job. I also think when pundits say it is a bad economy. No! It’s stalled because of obstruction, but not bad! Losing 750k jobs per month, the day the President took office, that is bad.
So, the Pundits are also assisting Robney, but it ain’t working, me thinks Viters ate a little more sophisticated this election cycle!

Well said… “Whitewater didn’t define Clinton — he was running on other issues. Barack Obama didn’t run for president as the Jeremiah Wright candidate, and George W. Bush didn’t run on his service in the National Guard,” Begala said, referring to the issues that plagued previous presidential campaigns. “But Romney is a one-trick pony. The only calling card Romney has for the presidency is his time in business. He never mentions his record in Massachusetts — those years have been scrubbed. His raison d’être is his business background, and he won’t come clean on it.”
