Catching Up

President Barack Obama has interview prep in the Oval Office, July 9, 2012. (Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)

Steve Benen: ….. President Obama spoke from the East Room of the White House this afternoon, making his case for extending a middle-class tax break. As was the case with Obama’s moves on immigration and marriage equality, it’s fair to say the president’s proposal is … clever.

…. Obama reminded the public of the taxes he’s already cut – “I wanted to repeat that because sometimes there’s a little misinformation out there and folks get confused about it,” he said – and highlighted the fact that trickle-down economics hasn’t worked. Obama added that the policy might look a lot different if the nation was still running a surplus.

But the meat of the pitch was making the case for extending lower tax rates for another year for those making under $250,000.

….Obama and his team don’t seem afraid of this fight in the slightest. On the contrary, they feel like they have the stronger hand — if Republicans give in and approve the president’s plan, Obama gets the political benefit; if Republicans are intransigent and fight for the rich, Obama gets the political benefit.

      Hello Chips, and TOD 🙂

Busy busy week, but popping in to say hello and to see that my President is kicking arse. Never mind the MSM braying about Robney’s fundraising numbers. Willard will go down in history as the biggest, most expensive loser EVAH!

I am having a bad day. I sometimes take things to heart and I can feel myself getting sick. But I know that Romney might have more money donated to him by his rich friends but the President has us.
At the end of the day we are going to win this thing and all that money from the rich folks will be gone; wasted.
We will be rejoicing like that night in November 08. What a joyful night it’s gonna be.
All the money in the world will not buy the presidency for that old flip-flopper, that I know So, let them throw their money down the drain. We will just move forwatd; onward to victory..

We have his back, and we are going to rejoice in our victory on the evening of Nov. 6, 2012. We are going to have our days, but we have a very stuff man who is counting on us and we are counting on him as well. That is the team work we know how to win this thing with everytime. Romney Set to Counterattack on Bain

The Romney campaign will begin to aggressively push back against President Obama’s accusations that the Republican was an “outsourcing pioneer” today, a source privy to the the campaign’s strategy told BuzzFeed.

In a conference call Monday morning, senior staff said Romney’s surrogates would stop shying away from the word “lie” in responding to Democrats’ attacks on his business record, and plan to go on TV to call Obama a “liar,” the source said.

“They are very fed up with these attacks,” said the source.

I know I sometimes sound like a broken record to my friends, but I think the greatest threat to our democracy is the current state of our so called mainstream media. How come the media is not informing the public that the Bush Tax Cuts have not increased job creation? This not a matter of opinion. This is a fact based on empirical evidence.

Jovie, I am a product of the 1960’s. Not all the so called “hippies” were for “Isolationism.” People simply opposed an illegal and unnecessary war in Vietnam. Many people who were anti-Vietnam war were also active in supporting the Peace Corps and the international struggles against South Africa’s Apartheid. Generalizations based on faulty history are not very helpful.

The focus of the segment though was about the Romney people trying to force delegates to pledge their votes to him. I can assure, ChristiMTL, that the vast majority of African Americans will not be moved by Ron Christie’s BS! The media, and the GOP, have this strange notion that by prominently featuring a black person, who insults and denigrates President Obama, this is going to win over Black folks to support Romney. This approach is based on a false assumption that Black people simply identify with other blacks irrespective of position on the issues. Obviously, the media and the GOP have not been paying attention. May be they need to be reminded of what happened to Allan Keys who was picked by the right wingers, because he was black, to oppose President Obama when he run for the U.S. Senate seat in Illinois. Key was not only defeated but he was humiliated. The overwhelming majority of Black people in Illinois voted for Barak Obama. Allan Keys has never been the same ever since. Tragically, this Harvard educated Black man ended up lowering himself by joining the “brothers.” Bottom line: Ron Christie has absolutely no standing in the African American community. The same is true of Allan West, Allan Keys, Kenneth Blackman, and the tragic Michael Steele.

The first time I saw this video the six minutes I spent viewing and listening to it completely awakened me to the reality of who were the actual job creators. President Obama’s campaign needs to get hold of this guy and try to convince him to speak on behalf of the President. I am absolutely certain that he would be a major game changer if he agreed to share his perspective with the American people. He definitely would put and end to Romney’s claims and pretensions that he was a job creator.

Thank you so much, Ladyhawke. This is the guy I was thinking about when I made my comment before. This is why our so called mainstream media are really a disgrace. Nick Hanauer effectively debunked the GOP “Job Creators” myth invented by Frank Luntz. Yet the mainstream media completely ignored him. I wish OFA would ask Nick Hanauer to allow them permission to run this clip. He singlehandedly, and devastatingly, demolishes the false GOP claims that rich people are job creators who deserve more and more tax cuts. I wish I knew how to save this and share it with as many people. May be the twitt masters like Bobfr, UT, Tally, Chips, AMK, Meta, and others can do it. Again, Ladyhawke, thank you for all the valuable information you share with us.

Well done Bob! Yes I posted this before I saw your excellent tweets. I should have known better because you are always on time. In my humble opinion, this guy, Nick Hanaueuer, totally demolished Luntz’ GOP talking points about “Job Creators” who demand more and more Tax Cuts. The media never think of asking this question: With all the Tax Cuts the so called “Job Creators” have received, since 2001, how come we still have such high unemployment? Under President Obama not a single American, rich or poor, has seen their taxes raised. So what’s the excuse of the “Job Creators” for not creating jobs? Surely they can’t, with a straight face, blame it on burdensome taxes.

Didn’t we help him reach $756 million in ’08, and that kind of money had never been seen before. We are not far off breaking that record, and we will, but doesn’t that mean future elections will require at least a billion to be in the running? Where is this going to end? I think I’ll go looking in the store.barackobama.com to see what I can see. It occurred to me today, after this campaign, there will be no more Obama campaign collectibles to collect! I so love all my ‘Obama family heirlooms’ I have stashed for my grandkids (even if I never have any)!

What I am wondering is that all along OFA has been raising more than Myth anyway; it was not until June that mofo brought in more for the first time. Now it’s all about how they are winning the money battle. Anyway, that is what I am wondering, but went ahead and raised my auto donate again, third time now since 1/10, in hopes of helping more. Plus, we all donate to each other, and I buy stuff to give away to neighbors and local places, so that all adds up!

Remember, we are team players for POTUS. That is what wins the game. Just think of all of the work each team member is doing on the team. We have people on the ground, door to door, phone banking, mailers, one-on-one conversations, voter registrations, weekend house meetings and weekdays, and so much more. These are the things that PBO counts on. We will have every cent that we need. We will have to put our energies into that thought which turns into an action.

Remember, we are Not buying an election, we are helping our Captain set out to win this election with people of truth, a pure core, a set of values that bring us together and not apart., a group of team-mates who workout with a level of honesty, compassion for others, and a river of hope running all through the valleys and mountains of this great country of ours.

We will win this. But we must not be discourage in our thinking, no matter how much the opposition pour in their ugly and dirty money. We stand for all those who can’t pitch in even a $1.00. but we can for them. We are the ones who they are counting on to live up to our “better angels” and to make our union a more perfect one. So, let us go out there and help our president win this thing. Okay.

Now, I better close up this computer before my nurse realizes tomorrow that I was up a little late. I love you Chips and all of my TOD family((((((((((( Be quiet in your souls and rest in your space))))))))HZ

A blind trust is not a blind trust when there is direct or indirect control over investment decisions. While Romney has nominally placed his investments in a trust which is managed by someone else, the person he has chosen to manage those investments is his close associate and personal attorney. That is not a blind trust under federal law.

It is a trust managed by a close personal friend and advisor.

This is important because it means Romney can coordinate investment decisions which on their face might be potential conflicts of interests.

Exactly! Even if we accept his claim that his money is in a blind trust, the question still is: Does Romney have any objections with his trustee putting his money in off shore tax heavens instead of putting it in American banks? Otherwise, what exactly does his slogan “Believing in America” mean? Surely, it can’t mean investing your money in other countries in order to avoid paying your share of taxes in the country you believe in. Willard “Mitt” Romney, should also be reminded that the vast majority of Americans, especially middle class and poor Americans, do not have the luxury of avoiding paying their tax obligations by putting their money in off shote tax heavens .

An old man is lying on his deathbed with his children, grandchildren, and older great-grandchildren all around, teary-eyed at the approaching finale of a very long and productive life. The old man is in a terminal coma, and the doctors have confirmed that the waiting will be over within the next twenty-four hours. Suddenly, the old man opens his eyes and croaks: “I must be dreaming of heaven! I smell your grandmother’s strudel!”

“No, grandfather, you are not dreaming. Grandmother is baking strudel now.”

“I know I will never have another taste of her delicious strudel after this one. Could you please go down and get me a piece?”, the old man begs with what is left of his final breath.

One of the grandchildren is immediately dispatched to honor the old man’s last request. After a long time, he returns empty-handed.

“Did you bring me one last piece of your grandmother’s delicious strudel?” the old man plaintively queries.

“I’m very sorry, grampa, but she says it’s for the funeral.”

Ok we know what he’s going to use that lie over and over…….blind trust therefore he knows nothing about it…

”Because Romney’s current blind trust isn’t recognized by federal standards, under which trusts are overseen by the Office of Government Ethics, it isn’t really “blind” because Romney’s personal attorney, with whom Romney can easily communicate, oversees it, ”

ChristiMTL, the mainstream media will pretend to believe him. Once the media give him a pass that would be it. The media has already given him a pass for not producing multiple tax returns like other previous candidates for President did, including Romney’s father. My hope is that the Democrats will keep hammering him and insisting on seeing more than one year of his tax returns.

I just copied a comment from some random blog….it says it all.

The whole idea behind his not providing any documents at this point is precisely that he knows it will take time to analyze them and the sooner he submits them the more time people will have to find out the truth of his financial status. He is waiting until there is no time for any of the documents to be fully reviewed before the election. And in my view that is a violation of the elections rules and a deliberate act to defraud the American people.

And….I would be willing to bet that he did indeed have all those off shore accounts long before he put them in a blind trust.

And who the h*ll does he think he is kidding that he does not know anything about them or have any involvement, when his best friend is the one who is managing them for him? Does he seriously think that the entire American population is as totally brain dead stupid as the GOPTeaBag base? Does he expect the entire American populace to believe that he and his best friend never discuss his off shore investments, or that he has no say in where and what the money is invested?

He obviously really does think that the American people are as stupid as the GOPTeaBag base and supporters. NOT!

Huge turnout for Libya elections, ‘historic’ doesn’t cover it

Libya’s first elections following the 42-year rule by former dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi were met with jubilation Saturday rather than the feared bloodshed from Gaddafi loyalists and the Eastern cities calling for federalism, as an estimated 1.6 million Libyans went to the polls for the first time in almost five decades.Security forces, government officials and voters had feared violent protests, particularly in the Eastern city of Benghazi where hundreds opposed the upcoming elections calling for more seats for the eastern region and a federal system that would give them greater independence from the west. But attempts at sabotage on the day did not stop millions from casting their votes.“I can’t describe the feeling,” said Abdul Hameed Mosmari and stood in a long queue with his 4-year-old son at the Bukhr voting station in Benghazi. “This is the first time I have felt this way. Today our revolution is a success. The future from here on for my country will just get better and better.”

  62. July 10, 2012 at 7:24 am

While the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee begin their counteroffensive on outsourcing today, Team Obama is continuing to grind away on the issue of Mitt Romney’s personal finances.

“Mitt Romney is defying calls to release more than one year’s worth of tax returns,” the Obama campaign says in a video out this morning. “How long can Romney keep information on his investments in overseas tax havens secret? And why he did it in the first place? Time will tell.”

Romney called into Radio Iowa yesterday to take on the tax-themed attacks, declaring his assets are in a blind trust and “that trustee follows all U.S. laws. All the taxes are paid, as appropriate. All of them have been reported to the government. There’s nothing hidden there.”

The Democratic attacks on Romney’s finances are based on circumstantial evidence and basically amount to: where there’s smoke, there’s fire. What’s inconvenient for Romney is that the smoke includes buzzwords like “Swiss bank account” that tend to be problematic for him in focus groups.
