I volunteered last night not for OFA but for our local non-commercial jazz radio station down at Cal State Long Beach. They are having their annual summer pledge drive to raise funds to keep the station on the air. Anyhow, I was sitting at a long table of volunteers each of us with headsets on taking pledge phone calls when I hear to my far left, this very very loud male voice say, “OH! I See you have an Obama button on. Do you think he’s going to win? I don’t think so at all. My father and I voted for him in 2008 but we won’t be this time because he just hasn’t accomplished anything, and there’s all this fighting going on in the House and the Senate. He just can’t get anything done and I can’t vote for him again.”
Since I didn’t have any Obama gear on myself, I turned to my left and looked down the length of the table to see who this man (DOOFUS) was talking to. Apparently a woman with an Obama 2012 button on had started her shift and was sat right next to him so he could train her on how to answer the phones for the pledge drive. Even though I was on phone calls myself, I could still hear him in the background, loudly and ignorantly pontificating repeatedly that besides getting OBL and health care, our Pres hasn’t accomplished anything and the Congress was preventing him from getting what he wanted to get done and he just wouldn’t get vote for him.
I couldn’t hear what she was saying back to him because she was speaking to him in a very calm, low, steady voice, but I heard him say (loudly, naturally) once to her, “Lilly Ledbetter Act? what’s that ? Is that the health care law?” I KID YOU NOT.
By this point, needless to say, my blood pressure was on the rise. In addition to having to hear this ignorance, the fact that he was saying it at such top volume was making it difficult for those of us at the table to hear our own phone calls. He wasn’t belligerent, just LOUDLY OPINIONATED and IGNORANT as some loud opinionated folks tend to be. Unfortunately, because I was sitting 5 chairs away I couldn’t reach down the table and rip his larynx out. At one point as I was just finishing up a pledge call, he was saying AGAIN how PBO couldn’t get anything done because of Congress blocking him and that’s why he couldn’t vote for him again.
I’d had it. I said in a very loud voice (ok, I yelled) down the table, “NO SIR, THAT’S WHY HE NEEDS A SECOND TERM!” Things got quiet quick.
The woman with the Obama button turned and looked at me down the table, I gave her a thumbs up, she gave me a wink. The people in between us kind of smiled to themselves. My phone rang again just at that moment and I was back to taking pledge calls. Later when there were a lull in the phones and Mr. Loudmouth had apparently gotten up from his phone, I walked over to the Obama button woman and handed her a stack of Randi Rhodes’ “Obama’s Top 50 accomplishments” wallet cards (remember those? 😆 ).
I told her that whenever I encounter these uninformed folks I just drop one of these on them, shuts them up right quick. She thanked me, chuckled and told me that she was a Summer Fellow for OFA and that my outburst seemed to have subdued him a bit. BTW they are looking for volunteers in the South Bay offices, Long Beach and the Crenshaw office that just opened yesterday.
Also ran into Mr. Loudmouth in the lunch room later while I was getting something to eat. He was avoiding eye contact so I walked up to him and said, “look you appear to be an intelligent man, and I’m sorry for yelling but I simply cannot tolerate this kind of mis-information. If you don’t want to vote for the President fine, but at least get a better understanding of WHY you won’t vote for him by informing yourself with facts of what he actually has or has NOT done. And lay off the Fox News will you please? They are doing you a disservice.”
I handed him one of Randi’s wallet cards and walked away. Anyway, towards the end of my shift, several other volunteers came up to me and thanked me for speaking up and asked me for the wallet cards as well. I handed the rest of my entire stash out to them. Mr. Loudmouth actually pleasantly said good night to me when I left.
Did I convert him? Who knows? But, I just can’t have people talking shit about my President in my presence.
The moral of this story is:
1) Carry these cards around with you. You never know when they are going to come in handy. (See link above for Randi’s card, also see Tien Le’s ACA wallet card)
and
2) Get out and Volunteer, for crips sake! There are still people, even in this “blue safe state” that are STILL woefully uninformed. Have a good day everyone! Off to enjoy the Cali sunshine!

Great Job Purpleshoes…I printed this our and plan to make copies to pass out. We will have the opportunity to discuss ACA because I heard the GOP are going to do a re-make of the Summer of 2009. It won’t work this time because all those seniors who were yelling to get your hands off my SS and MC are reaping the benefits of lower cost of name brand drugs and better healthcare. People who had to get Cobra are finding it “less” expensive than their retirement provided healthcare (my brother was just laid off and said so), these same people’s grandkids are on their parents’ employee provided health insurance plans. Their friends can’t get kicked off their insurance because of pre-existing conditions and some will soon be getting rebates. Employers should also be getting rebates and we all should see a reduction in deductibles and co-pays this November.

Anybody watch Sanjay Gupta on CNN’s special on Obamacare?
Some woman wrote in and said she had a knee replacement because she knew she would need it and wanted to get it done before Obamacare and his health care rationing and death panels kicked in.
His response? Yes, there will be administrators at the top who will decide how much healthcare some people should receive. He went on for a few minutes about that. Then quickly said it will be the same as it is now.
Then someone asked what President Obama is talking about when he said that the cost of healthcare would go down?
His response? He doesn’t know. Healthcare costs continue to rise. Then he added that certain preventive measures will now be free.
Then… the icing on the cake…..
Someone called in and spoke about how the gopers want to repeal Obamacare but never say what they are going to replace it with.
His response??? Well I spoke with the Romney campaign. They want to get rid of the mandate but will keep the other popular parts of the
program in place – such as no discrimination for pre-existing conditions, and keeping children on their parents healthcare plan until they are 26. He repeated that twice.
Gupta should keep his mouth closed and read the details of the ACA before he answer questions.
Fuck him! To think this man was actually considered a serious candidate for Surgeon General.

Wanted to say that the misinformation that is out there and is reinforced by news sources is why people are going nuts over this. There are so many benefits to the law and all this scary stuff like death panels is just hot air. This is too important for them to give out such ridiculous information.
There are many questions that I’ve seen on other blogs that really goes to show that not many have read the actual law or even done some research on their own from unbiased sources. With something this important, you really need to do your own due diligence so you understand what is in the law and, perhaps even more vital, what is NOT in the law.

I called in October last year, about got tickets for June, and that was the earliest!! The demand has been ridiculous since PBO took office. They don’t do Mondays. And there are some days they cancel tours, but you kinda don’t know when that will happen…

I happened to be in his office and asked about visiting the White House. The clerk, who had previously worked for a Dem senator, assured me that it really didn’t matter whether the legislator was D or R. The screening process is the same for everybody.
That was my fear. Both GA Senators are Rs, as is my Congressman. [sigh!] I’ll contact them on Monday. Thanks again!

These people don’t think this through. Without the “mandate”…..none of these other things will happen. It’s the ‘everybody in the pool’ policies that make the others possible. The insurance companies sure aren’t going to keep the “good” parts voluntarily. Anyone who believes that also believes there are fairies in the garden.

And calling it a tax, while technically correct, isn’t exactly how it works. Bill Maher (who I really don’t like, but I gotta give him credit here…) explained it well.
“Calling the mandate a tax, is like calling a speeding ticket a driving ticket. ” In other words, you would only have to pay the ‘tax’ if you never bought insurance until you got sick and went for treatment, of course, needed the insurance then.
You’re right. But we have to be aware that selling the “mandate” is a challenge. We just KNOW that the GOP and their allies are going to flood the airwaves with demagoguery. I HOPE the Obama campaign and the democratic leadership have a plan. A very very smart one, taking into account the lessons learned in 2010.
It should be called a “freeloader’s fee” as suggested by Maher. That’s what it is. The only people it will affect are those who still try to get by without buying insurance. I hope that once they go to the Emergency room for “primary care” they will get caught!!!
I like that, “The Freeloader’s Tax/Fee”, people who really want insurance will get help from the government to buy it….those that wants to take their chances, get hit by a bus or goes to emergency will get taxed FOR BEING TOO STUPID AND STUBORN or being a Teabag/Rethug.
What is interesting about the “freeloading” argument is that people on the right are constantly crowing about freeloaders – people who get food stamps, people who are in unions (go figure), anyone getting any kind of assistance at all. They are all derided as freeloaders and they don’t want to pay for these freeloaders – but they are willing to pay for freeloaders in the health care system? It doesn’t make sense. It’s typical right wing – or as I’ve taken to calling them, FRIGHT WING – hypocrisy.
I don’t see it as hard at all. More people in the pool = less cost for everyone, and eventually everyone will get their coverage from the NON-PROFITS going onto the exhcanges in 2014 who will offer BETTER PLANS for LESS MONEY because they don’t have $12mill CEOs to pay or stocks to sell. Only idiots will continue to throw money at for-profit insurers.
Anyone who walks into a hospital in the United States MUST BE TREATED whether they can pay for it or not. That is the law. The money for that doesn’t come from the GOP’s Magic Infinite Money Tree.
Healthcare IS A TAX NOW on the entire population – moreso on the middle class who pay a higher tax rate than people like Mitt Romney. Everyone pays for the millions of people who either cannot affor it, or can afford it and refuse to buy insurance. We pay for it in taxes. We pay in overpriced premiums, and overpriced care.

I become upset with the cable shows also, but then I remind myself that O’Reilly and Hannity average only about 2 million viewers a night. More people watch Bri$tol Palin than Tweety. yes so many are trying to take it away. this could make a great commercial to focus the people who do not know (or pretend not to to know) that ACA is not about POTUS, it is for us so why try to take it away?

One of those ladies in that first video said no one fights for us – well Obama fought for you, sweetheart. That’s why he did what he did.
I couldn’t watch the first video but that second one – that is what it is all about! Real people. Politics might seem like a game to politicians, but the decisions they make affect real people and their lives; it’s not about which politicians win or lose, it is about whether the American PEOPLE will win or lose. This was a big win for the American people and while some might think ObamaCare(s) will bring about the end of the world, the truth is that it will make it possible for people to live longer, healthier lives. This one woman’s reaction is an example of why the President fought so hard for this while knowing that it would not be popular at first and that he would take a hit politically. He didn’t care about who won or lost politically – he cared about the American people winning as he always has.

The other “sweet science” will be on display this Sunday night when the USO will be the focal point of an episode of Food Network’s reality program “Cupcake Wars.”
The show, named “Saluting the USO,” will air at 8 p.m. EST as competitors will be battling for sugary supremacy with a shot at having their confections featured during last October’s USO Gala in Washington, D.C.
The format for “Cupcake Wars” pits four bakers in three elimination challenges until only one decorator emerges victorious. The winner receives $10,000 and the honor of having his or her creation featured at a special event.
At least 15 USO Centers are planning “watch parties” for Sunday and for DVR aficionados, the show will be replayed on Tuesday, July 2 at 3 a.m. EST and on Wednesday, July 3 at 8 p.m. EST. Check your local listings and cable provider for the Food Network channel location in your area.

Romney and Kobach and Voting Rights

The United States had another win on Obamacare Day, when the State of Arizona lost in an attempt to ignore or dodge federal law:
The Supreme Court today denied an application by the State of Arizona to put on hold an April ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The Ninth Circuit sitting en banc found that voter registration provisions of Arizona’s Proposition 200 violate the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), and that Arizona cannot reject federal mail-in voter registration applications if they do not include documentary proof of citizenship.
While Arizona can still seek Supreme Court review of the Ninth Circuit decision, today’s Supreme Court’s decision makes it unlikely that the Court would grant such a request.
This means that the State of Arizona cannot impose restrictions on voting if those restrictions violate the National Voter Registration Act.
Meet Kris Kobach, the Secretary of State of Kansas, who has been advising Romney since 2008:
Kobach is most known, however, as the author of the Arizona Senate Bill 1070, the controversial law that gives local police broad powers to question and arrest undocumented immigrants. Several other states, including Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, used the law as model for similar legislation. Kobach helped write the Alabama version.
He also is the driving force behind proof-of-citizenship voter registration requirements in Kansas that other states have modeled. In January, Kobach endorsed the presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney days before the South Carolina primary
Kris Kobach believes that he is an advisor to Mitt Romney. This is potentially controversial, because Kobach is an anti-immigrant extremist who has also has done extensive work on voting issues. As in all things involving Mitt Romney, there are so many lies and dodges and contradictory claims that I have no earthly idea whether Kobach is an “official” advisor to Mitt Romney or not.

Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) began the Republican weekly response to PBO by stating he is a Dr. and came to DC to straighten out healthcare. He then told every lie that has been told about ACA expressing over and over that PBO lied about it not being a tax on the middle class. They have no compunction when it comes to discussing healthcare.
It has been my conclusion that when Doctors stop being Doctors and become politicians there is something fishy about it.

The United Nations-backed Action Group on Syria today forged an agreement outlining the steps for a peaceful transition in the Middle Eastern country, while strongly condemning the continued and escalating violence that has taken place there over the past 16 months.
“Today the international community has taken its cooperation to a stronger level, by being clearer and more specific,” said Joint Special Envoy for the UN and the League of Arab States on Syria, Kofi Annan, in his remarks to the Group in Geneva. “They have laid out a path that we hope the Syrian people can embrace and work with.”
In a statement, the Group called for all parties to immediately re-commit to a sustained cessation of armed violence, to fully cooperate with UN monitors, and to implement the six-point plan put forward by Mr. Annan without waiting for the actions of others.
The six-point peace plan calls for an end to violence, access for humanitarian agencies to provide relief to those in need, the release of detainees, the start of inclusive political dialogue, and unrestricted access to the country for the international media.
The Group also agreed on a set of principles and guidelines for a Syrian-led transition that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people, which includes the establishment of a transitional governing body that would exercise full executive powers and that would be made up by members of the present Government and the opposition and other groups.
“We are determined to work urgently and intensively to bring about an end to the violence and human rights abuses and the launch of a Syrian-led political process leading to a transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and enables them independently and democratically to determine their own future,” Mr. Annan stressed, adding that for the transition to be successful “there must be a commitment to accountability and national reconciliation.”
Mr. Annan emphasized that the conflict must be resolved through peaceful dialogue and negotiation alone, noting that Action Group members are “opposed to any further militarization of the conflict.”

I just finish listening to First Lady Michelle Obama speak at the AME church conference in Nashville, and you guys know what I think of our First Lady, how much respect I have for her, but let me tell you this speech is worth listening too. She was fantastic, at sometimes she sounded like a preacher. But I had only seem the last few minutes of the speech, I search for the entire speech with no luck. But to CTGirl to you I say thanks for finding this. And anyone who haven’t listen to the speech, I say listen too it. You will not be disappointed.

Hey TOD peeps!! I’m back from my phone banking event. It was really fun!! Thanks for all the encouraging words and great advice. thmtngirl, I live in Memphis. I got two people that were Obama supporters and were willing to volunteer if they could find the time. 1 young lady said she didn’t discuss politics and hung up. 1 lady said she wanted to be taken off the list and not called at home, in which I would have asked for an alternate number, but she hung up, LOL, and the rest didn’t answer or were disconnected. It was really cool and I got thru my pages in about an hour. There was a doctor there and he talked to a lady that said she wanted healthcare for all and free lunch for all kids, but she was contemplating voting for Mitt Romney. WTF? He handled the call really well and talked to her about Obamacare and other PBO accomplishments. I was happy that he got her because I’m not sure what I would have said to her. Probably something like, lady are you crazy, PBO is for everything you’re talking about, LOL! Anyway, it was good and now that the first time jitters are out the way, I will be doing it again. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!! DON’T PLAY NO GAMES!!!!!

I was at work today and I overhead one of the patients saying something similar. However, on of the patients said the information can be accessed on .gov website. She said in the area where she lives a lot of people have no computers but get news from TV and radio at the end of day. So is there anyway one one on this site who gets replies to their tweet from Axe or Messina? The idea should be to send these cards to anyone who pays taxis or gets social security/medicare as they would have their addresses in the government somewhere. This could be in the nature of a post card. In addition a list of spelling what obamacare does and what the mandate is. Even here some of the hospital personell do not want to pay extra taxes. This I think would help with people who have no access to computers instead of relying on propaganda from fox and cnn. Bob, UT, Tien-le ? anyone?
We need to get this info to people. It maybe expensive but the postoffice could use a boost. The Obama people are already in the 22nd century but some people in this country are still in the 20th century. Please!!!

Thinking about these cable shows and TV this weekend…..many people in the East don’t even have TV this weekend…I talked to good friends who live just outside of D.C. They weren’t hurt, but have no TV. She said they have their AC and phone and are happy. People in Colorado sure aren’t concerned about anything but the fires, and half the country is just trying to stay reasonably cool. Politics are not important when survival is the point.
We on this blog are hyper attuned to every blip, but most people are not. We are building up money now for Sept and Oct…..the big pushes. The campaign will keep up with and keep setting the dialogue, then hit it harder the last two months. Much of what happens now fades in the fall.

You know we could be seeing something here. This is their plab “B”, I am sure of this, just listen for other republican governors saying the same thing.
Rick Scott can refuse to implement the Medicaid expansion because of the SCOTUS ruling. By doing that he will set up his own death panels and pay an incredible political price. But the federal govt. can set up a health exchange for the state, meaning Scott gets no input on the exchange. The persons who are denied Medicaid can apply for subsidies to purchase their insurance through other means.
NO he can’t. The federal gov’t will step in and implement the exchanges for him and will be able to dictate how it will happen and he can’t do anything about it because federal law trumps state law, Article 6 US Constitution!
People who stand to benefit from the ACA should sue his ass in Court. No governor can refuse to implement a federal law. In the sixties, Southern segregationists tried that tactic and failed miserably. Scott needs to revisit Article VI, Section 2, of the U.S. Constitution, which plainly states that “the laws of the United States…shall be the supreme law of the land.” The “supremacy clause,” as it’s commonly called, makes it clear that once the Supreme Court rules that an Act of Congress is Constitutional, or declares that an act of Congress is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court’s ruling becomes the law of the entire country that must be obeyed by all government officials, federal, state, and local. Scott and the other GOP moron governors are trying to revive the failed doctrine of “nullification.”
When do they elect a new governor in FL? Remember the southern states would not honor the end of slavery nor the civil rights and what did we do? Either the people of FL kick him out our the Federal Govt will force them to do it.

This is pure BS spewing from Rick Scott. If he doesn’t begin implementing ObamaCare by the first deadline, Florida will incur a big penalty and the Federal Government will step in and implement it. So, Scott has no Choice but to cancel HC, it’s his only play of desperation, on account of the lies he told to get elected.
State Senator Mark Pafford didn’t mention that Rick Scott was convicted of $1.7 Billion dollar Medicare Fraud when he was in that private Sector.

OMG we lost power last night during that awful storm. It might not get restored for days. We are at a cooling station at a high school because of the heat. It’s so bad in my area. What I want to tell you, the infrastructure is being cyber -attacked everyday. They have to move stuff around, it takes it’s toll especially when their is weather like this, double whammy.
