NYT Editorial: The political feud between the White House and Congressional Republicans has now culminated in a House oversight committee vote to cite Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. for criminal contempt. His supposed crime is failing to hand over some documents in an investigation of a botched gunrunning sting operation known as “Fast and Furious.”

The Republicans shamelessly turned what should be a routine matter into a pointless constitutional confrontation. And the White House responded as most administrations do at some point: it invoked executive privilege to make a political problem go away.

…. Mr. Issa has relished making this investigation a political fight….There was no reason the House committee and the Justice Department could not work out a deal to produce the documents requested, or some form of them. Instead, they show again that every issue, large or small, can be turned into ammunition for political combat.

TPM: Mitt Romney’s campaign asked Florida Gov. Rick Scott to downplay his state’s job growth after several press releases from the governor’s campaign and messages from the Florida Chamber of Commerce trumpeted gains for the month of May, according to Bloomberg News.

Florida’s unemployment rate dropped from 8.7 percent in April to 8.6 percent in May, though still significantly above the national rate of 8.2 percent.

A Romney adviser reportedly requested that Scott’s office say that Florida’s unemployment rate could improve faster under a Romney presidency….

The development is perhaps one of the clearest examples of the messaging predicament the Romney campaign finds itself in …. when you ask Republican governors how things are going, especially in swing states, the economic picture starts to brighten considerably…

If Holder is handcuffed…the image of a black man who poses no threat being arrested….the Republican party might as well say goodbye to African Americans forever. They might as well say goodbye to all minorities. Especially since Roger Clemens and John Edwards recently got off. I guess it pays to be a white male these days.

Thank you amk for obama. You are so correct. There is absolutely nothing for AG Eric Holder to “get off.” That need not be even spoken about AG Holder in this situation.

We support AG Eric Holder and POB. This is a thuggish attempt to try to stain POB and AG Eric Holder’s office. Plain and simple, but I am supporting AG Holder and President Barack Obama.HZ

I would love to see ALL House Democrats stand up together and walk out of the House chamber if the Repugnicants vote to censure Holden. They could all march to the capital steps and hold a press conference about the outrageous partisanship of the vote. Hope Nancy can organize something like this. And there had better not be a single Democratic who votes for censure or that person should pay the consequences either in the caucus or at the voting booth.

I would love to see that too, but the house dems (and senate) haven’t shown much support for the President so far why would they start now? Where are all the loud mouths in the CBC and “progressive caucus?” They should be all over the place screaming about this, but it seems we only see them when they want to attack POTUS.

The next two generations need help – and they need a dedicated 50 years of investment, growth, goodness and light. i feel for the children growing up right now, watching the behavior of the GOP and the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Mitt Romney et al. These people don’t care what kind of example they’re leaving for these kids, and how damaging their behavior is to this and the next generation.

Linda, thank you so much for these pictures that remind us as Anne Frank wrote, that most people are good. Tears poured from my eyes as I viewed them and read the captions. It also reminds me of what PBO and MO often say; when you go all over the country meeting and talking to people, you see how good, decent, and hard-working most Americans are. The Beltway politicians and pundits and their views are not representative of who we are.

I especially liked the first 2 photos. The idea that these Christians came to a Gay Pride parade with their signs of love, apologies and acceptance is remarkable. I have great hope and certainty that America is growing up.

I thought all the pundits were emphasizing how the Bloomberg report was an “outlier”, but I’m seeing a bunch of polls today backing up that initial Bloomberg report. Basically – reality and the pundit version of reality aren’t the same things, and they’re shocked that people aren’t buying their nonsense and lies. The media is lazy – they decided Romney is equal or better than President Obama, even though Romney is a liar and hasn’t been honest about anything. While the media may not be willing to take a hard look at Romney and the GOP, the rest of the country feels the impact and positive effects of President Obama’s policies, and are wondering whether they should throw away the tangible, for the imagined.

Me thinks, realistically, the individual mandate is likely gone, anything better than that will be great, anything worse will be horrible!

      • 61 theo67
        June 21, 2012 at 1:45 pm

I think people have bought into the story about the individual mandate without actually knowing the details. It’s not actual mandatory, the penalty isn’t mandatory, and there are a ton of waivers and subsidies that are available to people. So, why it’s an assumption that it’s unconstitutional – I don’t know.

The truth of the matter is that the only real mandate is on the emergency rooms to provide service to people in emergencies, whether they can pay or not.

How does he ever think we can get it now with the House controlled by the nutcases? Lawrence O’Donnell explained the mandate and how it does not have an enforcable part to it anyway.

Good morning, OTeam. Nice to wake up to a sweet note from FLOTUS:

For the first 10 years of our marriage, Barack and I lived in an apartment in my hometown of Chicago.

The winters there can be pretty harsh, but no matter how snowy or icy it got, Barack would head out into the cold — shovel in hand — to dig my car out before I went to work.

In all our years of marriage, he’s always looked out for me. Now, I see that same commitment every day to you and to this country.

The only way we’ll win this election is if we can rely on one another like that, all the way to November 6th. Barack is working hard, but he can’t do this alone — he needs your help.

Make a donation today to build this campaign — when you do, you’ll be automatically entered to join Barack and me for a casual dinner:

    https://donate.barackobama.com/Barack-and-Me

Your flight, your meal, your accommodations — that’s all taken care of. Just bring yourself and a guest, and get ready to enjoy a good meal together.

Black Radio is on Fire this morning about this contempt charge by Congress. The discussion on Joe Madison’s show is that one of the scenarios is that when PBO is reelected and there is a vacany for the Supreme Court that Eric Holder would have been considered to be a nominee for Supreme Ct Justice. By voting these comtempt charges the congress is trying to taint Holder for future positons.

THE WORLD NEEDS GROWTH, AND IT NEEDS IT FAST.

    WE’RE NOT GREECE

    By EJ Dionne

    ——————————-

What’s happened so far in Europe is austerity without enough stimulus. This is a recipe for keeping economies down, unemployment high and electorates in an entirely understandable rage. No wonder historians and economists are now regularly offering frightening comparisons between the Europe of our times and the Europe of the early 1930s. If established parties tell voters they must suffer indefinitely, extreme parties begin to look attractive. The urgency of containing extremism is one motivation for French President Francois Hollande’s call for reversing austerity, and his hand was strengthened by his Socialist Party’s legislative election victory last weekend.

The real lesson from Europe is not that we should all tighten our belts and endure more pain but that we need to get the global economy moving. That means our Federal Reserve should pursue more expansive policies. And if congressional Republicans weren’t so determined to block nearly every initiative President Obama puts forward, they would agree to pump more money into state governments and into infrastructure spending to speed a decline in unemployment.

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/06/17/paul-begala-middle-class-in-free-fall-from-the-bush-depression.html

I have a wealthy friend who lives in a wealthy neighborhood. One day he was in his front yard, chatting with his next-door neighbor, a Republican, who asked him why he’s a Democrat. My friend said he’d grown up poor but had gotten a good public education, worked his tail off, and made it. Then he pointed to a gardener working across the street. “Don’t you want that gardener’s son to live the same American Dream we have?” my friend asked. His neighbor shot him down, sniffing, “That gardener’s son will be my son’s gardener.”

And so dies the American Dream. Have we reached a point where rich people no longer want to extend the winner’s circle? Has it gotten so bad that poor people cannot plausibly aspire to success? Are we moving toward Third World economics, where a few have it all and most have nothing? Are we witnessing the death of the great American middle class?

And the roadblocks continue to be put in the way, of “certain people” being able to make it in America. This President understands this, and is trying desperately to reverse the tide…but he can’t do it alone. If HE is doing this for all of US, we need to get out in forces that will boggle the minds of those that would hold our head’s underwater and choke us all until we die. More for them.An epic battle needs to be waged…or all of us will see desperation and poverty like we have never known.

The story of wanting the gardener’s son to be his son’s gardener reminds me of a few years ago when I was in Versaille, France. In the coach house there were all of these golden carriages including a very tiny one. It seemed the little one was pulled by minature ponies and the servants’ children were the footmen and drivers of the wealthy children. So Moveon.org decided that it’s time to get in line behind the President.

// “As of 9 a.m. this morning, 91% of voting MoveOn members have decided to endorse President Barack Obama. So now it’s all systems go. We have big plans for the election season, like a grassroots strategy to define Mitt Romney as the “President of the 1%,” and an innovative new program for all of us to help register thousands of young voters, women, and voters of color who the right-wing is trying to keep from voting.” //

It’s supposedly a progress organization. The fact that they had to take a vote is ludicrous. Did they expect that their members would want to throw their weight behind Mehmney? That’s like the NAACP holding a vote about whether they should support PBO, or the NRA holding a vote as to whether they should support the repug candidate. There were no other choices, of course they would support PBO. It was a ridiculous waste of time. MoveOn.org ain’t that important. Bunch of narcissists. 😕

    My response was:

    Tom didn’t respond … wonder why 😉

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/06/21/12337287-why-health-reform-is-so-unpopular?lite

Millions of Americans, especially in key battleground states, have turned against the law because they’ve been told to hate it. Voters have heard so many negative claims about “Obamacare” so often, they’ve started to believe them — even though the claims aren’t true. $235 million, in other words, can change a lot of minds, and convince people who want and need health care reform to reject a law that would serve them well. The right relies on well-financed propaganda campaigns because well-financed propaganda campaigns work.

The second has to do with the media.

And this is how they do EVERYTHING…which is why they should never be allowed to govern. EVER.

As Secretary, John fought tirelessly for our nation’s businesses and workers, helping to bolster our exports and promote American manufacturing and products at home and abroad. John has proven himself an effective and distinguished leader throughout his career in both the public and private sectors, from his success in the business world to his work leading on issues in the renewable energy industry. Mr. Wilson, Mitt Romney’s most loyal, visible and assiduous supporter, was not injured in the fire, but his truck was destroyed.

Ok, how sad is it that 2 months ago I couldn’t have cared a whit about Twitter, and now I’m pissed because it’s down?

CNN is carrying that ENTIRE horseload of a “speech” yet they cut off PBO’s speeches.

  85. June 21, 2012 at 12:41 pm

The lack of energy in that room where Willard just spoke is so starkly contrasted with the pumped up, electrifying energy at PBO’s speeches – EVEN the formal ones!

    They’re aware … http://status.twitter.com/

‘engineers working on it’ …. you betcha they are!

Would not surprise me if, as we move closer to Nov, all kinds of attacks on Twitter happen …

2008: Darrell Issa Voted “YES” to Fund Project Gunrunner & Merida Initiative.

The notion that Darrell Issa had never heard of Project Gunrunner is bullsh!t since Issa voted “yes” to specifically fund Project Gunrunner in 2008.

    Hey TOD family,

Caught just the end of Romney’s lying speech. What a douche. And what was up with his hair? He looked like he’d been shocked with an electric current. Hahaha. Too funny.
