Charles Pierce: ‘Fast & Spurious’

Charles Pierce: Well, we seem to have a real rage-gasm on our hands now. The president has gone and said the conjuring words, “executive privilege,” thereby presuming to do something once that the previous president did four times in a month back in 2007. And, as we know, for some odd reason – Ooh, ooh, I know! Ask me! – whenever this president does something that other presidents have done, it is a constitutional outrage of biblical proportions.

…. Expect to hear a lot of this, but do not expect to hear much about how horrified they all were when the previous administration invoked the same privilege to monkey-wrench an investigation into how thoroughly they’d politicized the DOJ.

(Please, someone explain to me that whatever is in those documents that the Congress so desperately wants could possibly be anything more than how this administration made the mistake of signing onto a policy idea promoted by the previous gang of idiots….)

….If this is more evidence that the president has tumbled to the fact that his political enemies are completely unappeasable, well, that penny took god’s own time to drop, but I’m glad it did. They want Eric Holder’s head on a stick. They should be told, repeatedly, where that stick should be stored.

It’s sad to think about Nath because the economy would be humming along, our bridges and roads would be repaired, we’d have pro-women legislation rather than a congressional war on American women and the Congress of the United States wouldn’t be bogged down in perpetual stupidity. Let’s do everything in our power to being Nancy back in November.

When the T Party folks didn’t like the ACA, big money paid for buses to go to D.C. When MLK spoke his DREAM speech, people got there by hook or by crook, and more than a million came.

It is time to do that again – to organize and rally people to go to Washington before the election. We must find a more powerful way to make our voices and feelings heard. The things that are happening now are too serious, too dangerous…Somehow, We the People must find a way to hold these people and their actions accountable.

The media makes itself even more of a mockery when they can’t resist imparting more negative news about PBO even when the evidence is clearly to the contrary. Minorities were not oversampled in the poll. Bloomberg followed the recipe of the last major polls that came out about PBO and Romney. They sampled 32% of minorities and 67% of whites yet PBO still came out on top. People like Nate make me sick. They’ll never rest until they’ve done their daily bash Pres. Obama schtick.

The MSM is really becoming so OBVIOUS with its anti-PBO bias that more and more people are catching on to their game. More and more people are wondering why EVERYTHING (even favorable polls) has to be “bad news for PBO”. Propaganda loses its effectiveness when its targets see it for what it is. The MSM has no credibilty and without credibility “news” becomes merely noise. I bet Mitt/MSM’s internal polls are pretty close to this Bloomberg poll. That would explain the full scale anti-PBO freakout we have been witnessing the past few weeks.

          June 20, 2012 at 10:13 pm

Eric, I truly think you’re right. The vast majority of people don’t follow the ins and outs of news stories and could care less what pundits say. Those who do watch are, as you said, catching on to the over-the top, blatant, in-your face right wing bias that comes from their tvs. The more sensible among us turned them all off a long time age.

          June 21, 2012 at 2:56 am

I love this statement: “The MSM has no credibilty and without credibility “news” becomes merely noise”. I’ve found myself tuning out the news and turning to a music station on my drive home (with a sigh of relief each time), desperate to get home and check TOD to find out what’s actually happening in the world. The MSM really does feel like noise – and it’s wonderful to tune them out. They’re worthless.

    • 55 anniebella
      June 20, 2012 at 7:51 pm

We know that the media is full of alot of crap. When there is a poll which has Mitt close or in the lead, the media don’t question who they talk too, how many whites, blacks, or browns were questions, how many Republicans or Democrats? They just accept it as fact and run with it on the news all day.

      • June 20, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Thank you annie, and that’s exactly my point to dishonest little Nate. The other day, a CBS/NYT OUTLIER poll came out showing PBO way down at only 41% approval – and we were all in disbelief because the crosstabs were skewed. Little Nate jumped to defend the poll – didn’t have any problem with it. When he could no longer defend it and was literally drowned out on Twitter by intelligent folks who weren’t buying any of the crap that he was peddling, he started saying, well the polls are just “noisy.” But he said NOTHING about the MSM who ran with that same crappy poll all day from Morning Joke, to Midnight Bloke. He said not a word of disapproval!

        • 57 EricFive
          June 20, 2012 at 8:47 pm

It is the job of Nate and the other MSM pundits to get Mitt elected President. This is why they dispute polls favoring PBO and tout clear outlier polls favoring Mitt. Polls favoring PBO mean that they are not being effective in their job of spewing anti-PBO propaganda . If their propaganda is losing its effectiveness, they lose their value to their corporate masters and risk losing their JOBS.

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign fended off questions on immigration policy on Wednesday as the Republican challenger scrambled for a response five days after President Barack Obama’s relaxation of immigration policy drew accolades from Hispanic voters.

Questions on the Republican challenger’s position on immigration dominated a campaign conference call Wednesday that was supposed to be about the economy. The call was cut off early after what a Romney staffer said were “off-topic” questions.

Republicans Outraged as America Ignores Their Sham Eric Holder Contempt Vote

    By: Jason Easley

    ————————–

The House Oversight Committee found Holder in contempt without even seeing the evidence that they claimed was essential. That is how much of a rigged game this was.

The whole investigation has been nothing, but a giant political con. Republicans are desperate for a scandal to attach to Obama, but they have been so shallow and transparent in their tactics that everyone knows what they are up to.

It isn’t working. No one cares, but Issa’s political fishing trip will continue to waste taxpayer dollars until the November election.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. But the only smoke being generated here is coming from the tax dollars being burned by Issa and his desperate band of partisan hacks.

“The black man is America’s modern Dionysus.”
“Madness at the Gates of the City: The Myth of American Innocence” by Barry Spector (2010), p. 307.

This is an excellent book I’m reading. It examines the metaphors, history, and mythology of the United States, primarily utilizing “The Bacchae” from Euripides. The book focuses on America’s Calvinism/Puritanism and its Opportunism, a strange and toxic combination. Two streams of thought are particulary considered, the paranoid (Calvinism/Puritanism) and the predatory (opportunistic capitalism) imaginations.

The book has been quite relevant to current events in the country, particularly as related to Obama and changing demographics in the nation. Dionysus often represents the “Other” — and in America that has been the experience of Native Americans, blacks, Muslims, etc., etc. The old white Puritan patriarchy is battling the “Other” to its utmost at the present time.

    • 82 carolyn
      June 20, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Yes, we are seeing the last frantic, mean, hateful gasps of the white Puritan patriarchy that is exemplified by the persecutors of Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter. They are like cornered animals, striking out at everyone, because they KNOW demographically and realistically, their hold on all the centers of power is slipping. They can’t stand it. They will demonize and try to destroy until their last breaths. To see anyone with any color in his skin in a position of power does something to them most of us cannot even imagine. They are totally off the tracks. However……they will not win. They ARE on the wrong side of history. History moves, it won’t stop for them. I a so glad to see women waking up. And, do you notice, when women work together, we are of all ages and all colors? We can unite.
I’m going to get this book…..it sounds intriguing. Thanks for bringing it to the blog.

America sadly has a history of demonizing the first “minority” that achieves in areas that these folks never achieved before…..baseball, mayors, senators, golf, quarterback, now President and Attorney General.

      • June 20, 2012 at 8:34 pm

The interesting thing to me is this last frantic hateful grasp only affects some white people and not others, and why. It’s basically Repubs vs. Dems again, I guess. There are plenty of white people who support Obama—millions—-from all income levels including the top, more likely to be college educated, but Repubs have those same demographics too. I just wonder why some can progress and are not afraid of change and others are absolutely terrified by it, become deranged by it. Different ways our brains are wired or upbringing or what? Why such insecurity in some?

Fear. They live in fear. They also do not want to share outside of their own ethnic group. This is why they believe in charity over social programs. Because they can pick and choose who receives it. I hear things because I am white. I don’t mind ratting them out. The things I hear give me the creeps. But there are plenty of white people who support the President. It’s that feeling of hope and admiration you get from seeing someone rise above the hate and win against all the odds by the force of their own brilliance. He unleashes hope and energy in others. This is why they hate him. Because of the power he has to inspire.

I think more white people need to rise up and declare that the GOP may think they’re the party of white people, but they don’t speak for all white people.

On a sort of related note: I heard on the radio tonight that the Catholic bishops are launching a two week campaign against President Obama and the health care law. They claim they didn’t seek out the fight, but the fight has been brought to them. The report also said that Democratic Catholics are hearing more and more partisan nonsense in church themselves, and one person even claimed to hear a man lean over during a particularly heated exchange and declare that they’ve even seen Democratic bumper stickers in the parking lot, and it’s those people who are responsible for everyrthing that’s happening (whatever that is).

            • 90 Walking_on_ Sunshine
              June 21, 2012 at 1:21 am

Many have risen up. That’s how PBO got elected in 2008. But we were not prepared for the backlash. I admit I did not think they would get as ugly as this. I knew there would be some crazies but did not expect to see them gain traction the way the birthers did. And I didn’t expect the far left to be such crybabies. It’s amazing the President is polling as high as he is when he is being criticized from right and left.

As for the Catholic bishops. Won’t this be settled by SCOTUS soon so what’s the point of their campaign? I’m not Catholic so forgive me if I’m wrong but isn’t the Vatican in favor of healthcare for all? Aren’t these Bishops defying Rome on this one? Care of the sick is a part of Christian doctrine. How did Christians ever get to this point? I think there is more to this than just racism because they did the same thing to Hillary Clinton. There has been decades of brainwashing by the RW media jocks pushing the agenda for the Insurance industry and drug companies.

While we are on the subject and I’m waxing lyrical. The whole ball of wax seems to me to be a matter of the 1% (now we have a convenient term for them) stirring up racial divides aided and abetted by the media. Keeping the “little people” blaming each other for their problems. It prevents us seeing the real culprits. The difference I think is that right leaning people tend to think that once you’ve found someone to blame you can forget about the problem. Whereas, left leaning people look for ways to solve the problem. Blame doesn’t fix anything.

Democratic bumper stickers….in the church parking lot…….how shocking!!!!!

I’m going to bed now. Praying for a humane and decent decision from the Supreme Court. This should be a no-brainer in the 21st Century.

This question is usually a salient point in determining consciousness. What is consciousness? The human quality of awareness which seeks to widen its comprehension of the world we live in by looking at a bigger picture, a longer view, a philosophy of inclusion…a state of being which moves one away from being the center of the Universe, to becoming a dynamic and energetic part of a Whole. This is my own definition, not a dictionary quote. We are greater together.

OT, but I thought this was an interesting concept. Panera opens a “pay what you can” cafe in the Lakeview area of Chicago. Those who can are asked to donate more, those who are short can pay less, or not at all. Gives some dignity to those who are down on their luck, the opportunity to eat out in a nice setting. Has been successful in other locations.

I’m watching Ed but I didn’t understand what Jonathan Alter was saying…….he said that after the vote, they can handcuff AG Holder on the spot and put him in jail? Did I hear right?

    • June 20, 2012 at 8:29 pm

He also said that this would be an extreme, and unprecedented action that would ultimately HURT the Rethugs if they did it.

The optics of the first Black AG being handcuffed for no damn good reason would put America right back to where it was in 1960. I don’t think the Republican party wants to be stained with that legacy of putting 2012 America back in the pre-Civil rights era – while the whole world is watching.

These fuckwits will tear this country down and kill everyone in it in order to hurt PBO. don’t be surprised if Holder is jailed next week. Fucking shitfreaks.

Although I think most people (Dems, Indies, and some R’s) hates Rove.

Yes. Apparently being charged with contempt can get you locked up. I think it’s like in the movies where a lawyer is found in contempt of court and the judge locks them up for a few days and they pay fines. I think of it that way, but I don’t know if Holder would have to pay a fine.

The Obama campaign spent more money than it raised in May, but is sitting on $110 million in cash, according to a Federal Election Commission filing on Wednesday.

Obama for America raised $39.1 million in May and spent $44.6 million. The $39.1 million makes up part of the $60 million, announced earlier this month, that the campaign raised jointly with the Democratic National Committee.

My friend/our fellow TODer canadabarb4obama called me tonight “from the side of the highway,” after she had crossed back over into Canada following a brief trip to the U.S. She asked me to post this! Barb ran into (not literally) three gentleman in a van with an Illinois license plate, and they all got into a conversation. Barb asked where they were heading, and they said Alaska. They then asked her (seriously), “Do you have gas stations here?” (She said she thought maybe they had expected everyone in Canada to be wearing big furs, heading for their igloos – she gets this type of question a lot!) Anyway, before they all parted, Barb told them, “Vote for Obama in November!” After they smiled, she told them again, “No, I’m not kidding! Vote for Obama in November!”

One more comment on what I saw on RM”S show that I thought was a very good point. Bob Herbert was on, and he talked about the fact that Republicans went nuts when the Border patrol guy got killed and the gun was traced to one of these gun walking guns. Now, as awful as that was that someone should die at the hands of one of these guns….the question Herbert posed was, “Why aren’t they JUST as outraged every time someone gets killed by a gun in America?” This was ONE PERSON, compared to 100,000 that die every single year from gun violence…and where is the outrage??? Great point.

I am sorry but I want no chains anywhere near the Attorney General. Sometimes, the media and comedians get all giggly at the prospect of exposing outrageous GOP birther attacks, immigrant bashing, gay smears. It’s their fodder, but it hurts people’s feelings. Racial put downs and attacks on PBO are attacks on AfricanAmericans. Knowing how I feel about it, I imagine other groups, immigrants, gays, muslims, et. al. must be pierced to the heart when they hear malicious sound bites, played over-and-over, ad nauseum. Often, I fast-forward or mute the sound.

It’s amazing that some of these people on the left want the worst to happen so that they can chalk up a victory. They do this all the time. “Kill the [HCR] bill”. “Mitt Romney should win”. “Better to take a philosophical stand and lose, than to win a little victory that might help a few families (but I won’t get my pony)”. “Don’t take Super PAC money”. “Use Executive Order to kill DADT”.

so the guest that RM has on her program talks about how disappointed he is re:PBOs movement on gun policy……i want to scream,,,i will screammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……these extremists are dangerous people,…FOX news and all pump hate into the our country…yet this man is disappointed in PBO…

That was Bob Herbert.. to be fair, I think that the only thing that the President has done regarding guns since taking office, is to allow them into national parks. Now I don’t agree with this thought, but…it’s not going to send me running away from supporting this President. Which brings up ANOTHER point…PBO has EXPANDED their rights to take guns where they hadn’t been previously allowed, yet we’re all supposed to now believe that this is a ploy to strip the 2nd Amendment from the Constitution? These wackos need some mental healthcare. Don’t forget that Wayne LaPierre (NRA) has a vested interest in stirring shit and lying…the NRA is powerful and getting more so because of the fear is he stoking against PBO and the lie that he’s going to take their guns away. It’s just ALL kinds of fucked up with lies.

The President Only signed a bill, reluctantly, because it was put in by the Republicans!
He signed it, to get the totality of the Bill, I think it was the Credit Card bill!
And btw- no way gun control gets through Congress, NRA us the biggest lobbyist in America.
Change lobbying rules, then you got a shot… No pun intended!

Understand, I’m not railing against the President here…It is what it is. My bigger point is that he has EXPANDED gun rights…be it just this, and they still scream and yell that he’s going to take everyone’s guns away and somehow strip the 2nd Amendment out of the Constitution. Ridiculous!

You know what, df, It really doesn’t matter about the truth of what the President has or has not done. A month ago, I was arguing with a man who called himself an Independent. Because I was wearing my 2012 Obama cap he wanted to know why I was supporting a failed President. Before I could even get a word in, he insisted on lecturing me that Obama is tax and spend liberal who has raised taxes and tripled the deficits. No matter how much I tried to tell him that what he was alleging was not true he simply dismissed me as being brainwashed by Obama. Finally, I decided that it was a waste of my time trying to argue with him. The only thing I said to him as I walked away is that he should stop trying to fool people that he is an independent. Sadly, as Eric Hoffer said, the “True Believers” are always “absolutely certain about things they do not know.”

The PL think that this election is about President Obama and his ego. They forget that there are actual issues that need solving, decline that needs halting, infrastructure that needs building, a generation that needs education, a world that needs leading, wars that need ending, innovation waiting to be discovered and people that need hope and care. President Obama hasn’t forgotten, and the choice is between him and Mitt Romney. Those are the things the PL seem to ignore, while they plot their horse race, peddle their egocentric books, and show off their intelligence to each other.

Evening friends. Emotional day for me. Got a call yesterday morning from “angel nurse” telling me that Momma had just coughed up a bog clot of blood……shows her blood is thickening. More and more signs the end is nearing. Yet, it could be tonight and it could be WEEKS! Today, she slept most of the time I was there (almost 3 hrs.) except when I was trying to coax her to eat lunch. Fed her 8-10 bites and some of those she spat out so she ate no lunch–just too weak. Her body is worn out and she is giving up totally.

Then, this AG Holder mess on top of my mom. I am totally drained. Would like to say more but simply not up to it tonight. Maybe tomorrow………..

I saw that. He agreed with LOD….what Laurence has been saying for about three years…..that the individual mandate doesn’t relly mean much. That if SCOTUS decrees that unconstitutional and separates it from the rest of the law, it will have no effect whatsoever. I don’t understand it well enough to explain it, but when they were explaining it, it made sense. They both said the press will run with that, but that will show they don’t understand the bill. NEW ORLEANS—Vice President Joe Biden tells a gathering of black journalists that Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney’s economic platform shows he is out of touch with the nation’s middle class.

    Raise Your Voice
Care about the campaign? Click to write to the candidates.
Biden said during his speech Wednesday night at a National Association of Black Journalists convention in New Orleans that Romney wants to grow the nation’s economy “from the top down” by deregulating Wall Street and cutting taxes for the wealthy.

The vice president calls Romney “an honorable man” with a “beautiful family” but says that the former venture capitalist doesn’t understand what’s happening to ordinary Americans.

Biden also touts the Obama administration’s record on job growth, saying that he and the president believe the economy cannot be truly health until the “profound erosion” of middle-class jobs and income is reversed.

Attorney General Eric Holder’s response to Darrel Assa:

“It’s an election-year tactic intended to distract attention — and, as a result — has deflected critical resources from fulfilling what remains my top priority at the Department of Justice: Protecting the American people….

Simply put, any claims that the Justice Department has been unresponsive to requests for information are untrue. From the beginning, Chairman Issa and certain members of the Committee have made unsubstantiated allegations first, then scrambled for facts to try to justify them later. That might make for good political theater, but it does little to uncover the truth or address the problems associated with this operation and prior ones dating back to the previous Administration.

“I have spent most of my career in law enforcement and worked closely with brave agents who put their lives on the line every day. I know the sacrifices they make, so as soon as allegations of gunwalking came to my attention – and well before Chairman Issa expressed any interest in this issue — I ordered the practice stopped.”
