seriously, though I used to watch the girls in the projects where I lived jumping double dutch and I remember even then being mad cause I didn’t know how. It also brings back memories of us playing regular old jump rope in the courtyard of our buildings. I usta love to jump rope, me and my sisters were a team…lol.

i feel you. I jumped double once and it was fun. I was 10. haven’t tried it since. when i was growing up we played something similar to hopscotch but with loads and loads of rubber bands strung together. the long lines of rubber bands were then conned and made a circular shape, then two people would go to either end, place both legs in it and start off at the ankle so two people would stand with the rubberbands around their ankles which were stretched at a distance to make a rectangular shape, then another person would jump over each end 5 times then jump on both lengths at the same time. then the two people holding the rubberbands would move the bands up to their knees and the jumper would repeat the process and if that was successful the band holders would move the bands up to their hips an so on. as we grew older the game became more complicated with 3 or 4 band holders with more and more sides to jump, with more and more people jumping at one time. it was so much fun!! Other times we played something like dodge ball. we’d get a milk carton, stuff it with old newspapers or leaves, batter the edges of the milk carton so that it wasn’t too sharp and therefore wouldn’t hurt too badly if you got hit with it. 3 or more people can play at a time. typically, two people are the ball throwers and 1, 2,3 or however many are in the middle. so one thrower throws the “ball” to the other and you run away from the person with the ball only you can’t go past the throwers and you can’t go beyond the wingspan of the throwers so the direction of the ball herds you from one thrower to the next. the thrower decides when and who to throw the ball at. whoever gets hit is out and takes the throwers place.AWESOME!!! I miss the good ole days!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ those were some good times.

repost from the last thread where I was talking to myself…..
          ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Can you imagine??? You know Michelle got that honest. There aren’t many “city girls” who grew up back in the late ’60s and ’70s who didn’t know how to double dutch. Did you hear her let them know that they could turn a little faster?

Don’t get me wrong, those kids were PHENOMENAL!!! And even when I was jumping every day, we didn’t do stuff like that. But I will say, we turned the rope a LOT faster!! I also remember the names we used. I have NO IDEA where “double dutch” came from, but turning the ropes ‘overhanded’ was called “double dutch.” Turning ‘underhanded’ was called “turning Irish” and turning double dutch, really REALLY fast was called ‘hot pepper.’

The ultimate crime in turning was to be labeled “double handed.” That mean that one of your hands (usually your dominant hand) was stronger and thus made turning ‘uneven.’ You could hear if a person was double handed because the rhythm of the ropes were ‘off’ — thump-THUMP, thump-THUMP, thump-THUMP, instead of an even “thump, thump, thump, thump. thump, thump.”

WOW, sorry ya’ll. That just brought back some fun, childhood memories!

BTW, did you use the grey Bell Telephone wire for your jump ropes? We had a Bell maintenance facility in my town and we would get the scrape wire from the trash; if there wasn’t a long enough piece, they would cut one off the role for us. I used to stock up on them and sell them to my cousins and their friends in Philly. Fifty cent a rope, all profit! lol

Y’all were SERIOUS!!! That telephone wire HURT!!! if you missed. I guess we were considered “fancy” — we used ‘used’ clothes lines. Remember when folks hung their clothes out in the yard? That kind of clothes line.

We lived to jump double dutch. It was second nature. And boy, if you couldn’t turn (double handed) you might as well try to get a game of hop scotch going. We liked a certain type of rope. It had to be a “clothesline” rope, but not too heavy or too light weight. And definitely not the nylon rope. I still jump at family picnics. Of course, I can’t keep up with some of the youngsters, but also I am always surprised at how many don’t know how to jump.

When I first moved to Juneau, Alaska with our family my daughters were part of a group called Juneau Jumpers. They were a jump rope team from one of the elementary schools. They did choreographed jumping tricks to music. My girls were only at that school a short time before moving to a different school, but the team was well known and participated in national competitions.

seriously Chips, I’ve can’t stop watching this video. It’s like the picture of the Obama’s wedding day and the pic of Barack and Michelle where her head is on his shoulder and she has her arms around his middle and he has his arm around her shoulder. My friends and fam are always commenting on how that pic just looks like one we’d see of our aunt or uncle and it totally reminds me of a pic I have of my mom and dad too.

This video reminds me of all the times I watched the girls in my neighborhood jumping double dutch while a bunch of us sat on da stoop.

President Obama was “encouraged by what he heard” from Angela Merkel on Monday at the G20 Summit in Mexico, where he urged the German Chancellor and other European leaders to move forward after the โ€œpositive prospectโ€ of Greeceโ€™s election.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Obama and Merkel agreed to work closely in the coming months as Germany helps manage the European crisis, which threatens the U.S. economy and Obamaโ€™s own reelection hopes.

  17. June 18, 2012 at 10:58 pm

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece’s conservatives are close to forming a new coalition government following a narrow election victory, a party official said on Monday, after their leader promised to soften the country’s punishing austerity program despite German opposition.

A relief rally on financial markets after Sunday’s vote quickly fizzled out as it became clear that the New Democracy party of Antonis Samaras had failed to win a strong mandate to implement the big spending cuts and tax increases demanded by the European Union and the IMF under a bailout deal.

Radical left-wing bloc SYRIZA and smaller parties opposed to the conditions attached to the 130 billion euro ($164 billion) bailout won around half the vote, though they took fewer seats in parliament because the electoral system rewards the first placed party disproportionately.

This makes me so angry: ‘Black Names: Bad News for Jobs’ http://www.theroot.com/buzz/bad-news-those-blackest-names

We are discriminated against at every turn. They discriminate against us because we’re unemployed. They discriminate against us because of our names. If your name is on that list, I guess you change it, but once you show up, it’s over, isn’t it?! How the hell do you know if some bigoted fool isn’t going to decide your name sounds black and throw your resume in the trash?

I’ve worked all my life. Since I turned 19. I’ve NEVER not been able to find a job. But it’s discriminatory policies like these that’s working to keep me and others (there are other people here who have been unemployed for as long as I have been. They’re just lucky enough to have a safety net) from finding work. Policies that extremists like Ron Paul and the teabaggers in congress champion. They don’t care about the lives these hateful evil policies affect.

There are real and devastating consequences to shit like this: ‘Black Names: Bad News for Jobs’ Real people with real lives, families, hopes and dreams have ‘black names.’

True, my obsessive loathing of Cenk Uygur knows no bounds – to the point where I really need to start ignoring the fraud before my head pops.

But …. I made a big mistake: just to annoy myself, I watched his latest video on YouTube.

Why oh why oh why do I do these things?

Ah, people, this guy is a seriously ugly, sinister piece of work.

His hatred – and I’m talking seething hatred here – of PBO is something else, he can barely contain himself. In fact, he starts sweating profusely when he launches in to his anti-PBO bile. All I can guess is that this recently ‘converted’ hardcore right-winger is now privately freaking out at the prospect of PBO being re-elected, so he’s decided to turn up the hate a notch or two. It’s a sight to behold.

PBO is, he says, “greasy” …. and he almost spat it out.

Isn’t he the same as Ratigan, Huffington though?……frauds!!! pretending to care about the poor and middle class……their only purpose is to destroy the President to keep their tax cut…………..thanks a lot Al Gore…….

                  • June 19, 2012 at 12:07 am

Al Gore became a very strange guy. His personal life took a nosedive and his politics are now what, exactly?

                  • June 19, 2012 at 12:07 am

It’s probably just me and my obsession ChristiMTL, but I think this guy is way worse. Most people see Huffington for what she is, a fraud, but Uygur is still painted as a progressive hero among the Hamsher/Greenwald crowd. I never listen to Ratigan so I have no clue what he’s spewing these days, I just have very large suspicions about Uygur. All, I suspect, is not as it seems.

I don’t understand the motivation of Al Gore……….why did he hire him?….to grab that market?…..they hate the President, they are not Democrats….they are the left version of the Tea Party, most are Libertarian……they didn’t vote for him in 2008 and they sure won’t vote for him this year……I just don’t get it……….

                    • June 19, 2012 at 7:23 am

“In fact, he starts sweating profusely when he launches in to his anti-PBO bile.”

That is scary…very scary. That level of hate is organic. I see why you’re concerned, CHIPS.

Chips, I can’t believe Al Gore has him on Current. Spitzer is not as bad, but he gives out misinformation and doesn’t give PBO credit for getting anything accomplished. I watch Stephanie Miller and that’s it. I don’t even watch Bill Press anymore.

Bill Press is an asshole….I don’t listen to him either….another dredge on society making money off PBO’s name with a book. These people are unbelieveable.

I’ve learned that there are some people who I have to completely cut out of my life because they’re just too toxic. I get tempted to just peek in, but then I remember how irate I get after only a few seconds. They suck the good right out of you, and you’re left sputtering and swearing and feeling bad. Cenk is one of them. I don’t even give him a second of my time. Not even a second. It’s the same treatment I give to Dylan Ratigan, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin. Pure negativity – they suck the good right out of you like leeches.

Maraniss – making rounds. Perhaps LOD might actually ask him some hard questions and expose the BS, just like Martin Bashir had done with the guy who had written about PBO’s administration being hostile to women.

        June 19, 2012 at 12:08 am

I don’t know Hope…..I usually like LO…..but on some occasions, I was really disappointed….I remember one time he had Bill Maher on and he was calling the President all sort of names and LO didn’t say nothing…….so we’ll see…….

        • June 19, 2012 at 7:16 am

Hmm…you may be right Christi. If LOD encourages any worthless gossip he will be hearing from us on Twitter that’s for sure. And that’s right after we do this: *CLICK*

Yeah, he wrote a book saying the president is naive and too inexperienced. His book is on the best sellers list so PBO is enough for him to get rich off of…I am hoping LO gives him a piece of his mind.

I read UT comment earlier, …….I was disgusted!…..the nerve of that man……it’s always the same BS……but Piers Morgan is not LO….I’m sure he was thrilled……yeaa someone on his show bashing the President.

I’m sick of the ”inexperienced” crap…..what he didn’t have executive experience like Bush, Palin, Romney?….I’ll take intelligence over so called experience any day.

President Obama is an amazing leader….amazing man…………they are chronically jealous…..

I heard about that book and the one by Maraniss, and I will keep repeating myself, the only books I intent to read about the Obamas are the ones they write when they are out of the White House. Other than that I don’t care to read the other mess.

Good one! I loved that movie. Sigourney Weaver was sheer perfection as First Lady.

After seeing previews this weekend, I’m looking forward to the new TV show coming up (I think on USA) where she plays Secretary of State/former First Lady with a philandering Former POTUS-husband. Hmmm, I wonder who that’s based on. They added to grown sons to the family though. Wow, that sure makes it difficult to figure out…

I love FLOTUS because she is herself. Not some fake stuck up rick snob, Mrs. Obama is the kind of person who is going to be herself weither she is with kings or Queens or the average guy or gal on the street. I pray the American voters wake up and realize the jewel we already have in the White House. And give her and her husband four more years.

LOS CABOS, Mexico (Reuters) – Under pressure from financial markets and anxious world leaders, Europe agreed on Monday to move towards a more integrated banking system to stem a debt crisis that threatens the survival of the euro.

At a Group of 20 summit of the world’s leading industrialized and developing economies in this Mexican resort, Germany and its big euro zone partners took the unusual step of spelling out in detail measures to complete the economic and monetary union they launched to great fanfare 13 years ago.

Among the commitments in a draft G20 communique was a pledge to consider concrete steps towards a “more integrated financial architecture” in Europe that would include common banking supervision and firm guarantees to repay bank depositors.

The United States, the International Monetary Fund and European Commission have been urging EU member states to press ahead with a banking union to break the vicious link between deeply indebted governments bailing out illiquid financial institutions, worsening the sovereign debt problems and deepening the euro-zone crisis.

While that term did not appear in the declaration, the wording did suggest that Germany, which has rejected initiatives that might expose it to the cost of rescuing banks outside its borders, was growing more open to the idea of closer banking cooperation.

U.S. President Barack Obama, concerned that Europe’s debt crisis could deteriorate further and upend his re-election hopes, met with Chancellor Angela Merkel, who as the leader of Europe’s biggest economy is under intense pressure to commit German resources to underpin the euro zone and prevent a catastrophic breakup.

Obama’s spokesman said the U.S. president was encouraged by the talks, which touched on steps to “increase European integration”.

How long before Rubio walks this back?

Hypothetically, if Marco Rubio were not an American citizen and could not provide food for his family, he says he would cross the border illegally to come to the United States.

While discussing immigration policy in his new memoir, An American Son, Rubio called for “common decency” in dealing with undocumented immigrants and said that if put in a similar position as those who are fleeing destitution, he would break the law, too.

“Many people who come here illegally are doing exactly what we would do if we lived in a country where we couldn’t feed our families,” Rubio writes in his book, which went on sale Tuesday. “If my kids went to sleep hungry every night and my country didn’t give me an opportunity to feed them, there isn’t a law, no matter how restrictive, that would prevent me from coming here.”
