Good Morning, TODville! This is the new looking-in-before-work-experiment started yesterday. Am I disciplined enough to check out with time enough to get to work on time? It worked yesterday, just barely. 😆

ps. Had comment all ready, then had to rush to get ready and forgot to turn off laptop. Passing by to leave & saw it was still on. If I get fired today it will be all Chips fault. (Way to pass the buck!)

Matt Lauer is obsessed with teenagers and their activities. He has 3 tweets in total and they are all about Justin Beiber. He interviewed PBO once and spent the first half of the very short interview asking the President about whether the Sasha/Malia had some adult footballer’s poster on their wall.

    Grow up Matt.

    • 35 nathkatun7
      June 15, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Good question, df. I also have another question I think Romney and Republicans need to be asked: If the moneyed people, who deserve tax give aways, are job creators how come they are sitting on record amounts of money and haven’t invested it in creating jobs?

  11. June 15, 2012 at 8:40 am

Bill Press just said that the Democrats he Knows are throwing in the Towel, as in we lost.
He says, grow a pair and fight, this is June.
What Democrats is he referring to?
Jonathan Alter, Donnie Deutch, Rendell, Carville, etc? Really? People on tv with an agenda, reading RNC emails? Really?
    They don’t speak for me.

I guess Bill Press doesn’t know any real Democrats. This is nonsense.

    • June 15, 2012 at 9:21 am

Bill Press has always been a whiner. He complained constantly during the last campaign. I quit listening to him back then and never went back.

    • 41 57andfemale
      June 15, 2012 at 10:56 am

I heard him. I found this actually positive — oh stop publicly whining, you lefty loons, and just get to work.

You don’t roll out the entire campaign all at once. Not everyone lives and breathes this stuff, for God’s sake.

Now here’s an idea — stop putting Rendell, Alter, Carville and rest as the only voices of the Democratic Party. That goes for every alleged progressive host.

He was in Cartagena, Colombia the weekend Gabby Giffords was shot. He is often in the middle east, Who knows what the purpose of all these trips are, but otherwise in his in DC for the Sunday shows. Cindy must not want him in Arizona on weekends.

Howdy doodie O peeps!!! Just as promised, another great getting up day again in TOD-town. Waiting for PBO and the ladies to arrive back in Chi-town. How cool for the FDOTUS to see their old neighborhood/school friends again. Since the little ones will be with him this visit, I guess I’ll behave this time.

My political take today is that if you notice, all the talk by the pundits and MSM was about PBO’s speech. It was looped and critiqued just on about every station. Meanwhile, Mitt’s speech got a very brief mention and little to no clips. To me this is a good thing. People are talking about what PBO said. Folks who hear it will draw their own conclusions, regardless of how the pundits frame it. Mitt gets no coverage, for two reasons, he had nothing to say, and what he did say wasn’t news worthy. btw, PBO was at the fundraisers given by Sarah Jessica Parker, Alicia Keyes, and Mariah Carey. Mitt was surrounded at his fundraiser in Chicago by the Mr. Whipple of ‘don’t squeeze the Charmin’ type glamor.

Americans See Obama as Solid Favorite to Win Election.

// PRINCETON, NJ — Fifty-six percent of Americans think Barack Obama will win the 2012 presidential election, compared with 36% who think Mitt Romney will win. Democrats are more likely to believe that Obama will win than Republicans are to believe Romney will. Independents are nearly twice as likely to think that Obama, rather than Romney, will prevail. //

Yes – that was absolutely masterful. One of his greatest rewrite segments. I really like LOD – he seems such a moral person in the absolute best way.

A curious fact about Jonathan Alter. He is originally from Chicago and his MOTHER was one of PBOs earliest supporters – I mean really, really early. And Jonathan has been so positive about him in the past but something weirdly personal may have happened because he has seemed much more hostile these past few months.

      • June 15, 2012 at 9:48 am

Probably wanted more access for a book and they said no. Who knows. I don’t listen to Alter or any of these so-called liberal pundits who won’t write about Mitt’s lies, but want to pile on the president. There’s so much damage GOP has done to be covered than going after the president.

The Root of Romney’s Comfort with Lying

Psychiatrist DR. Justin Frank – The same man who Analyzed Presidents Bush and Obama – has analyzed Mitt Romney – and says Romney is comfortable lying, in part, because of the way he was raised in his Mormon faith. But could the reason why Romney can’t tell the truth be something much more simple – and does it make him unfit to be President.

I had this screen up when someone came into my office and they stopped and said, “I’d give anything to have a man look at me the way he looks at FLOTUS”. She then went on a tirade about Romney. 😯

I didn’t even know this person paid politics a bit of attention. She apparently has family in Detroit and she said she is constantly on them about making sure they are registered and vote this November. It blew me away. She is one of the quietest people here at the company.

You see you never know who is paying attention. Folks know the real deal even if they don’t talk about it all the time. 🙂

    • 76 utaustinliberal
      June 15, 2012 at 9:28 am

Exactly. A lot of people see me with my Obama 2012 gear on my person or on my car and the people I wouldn’t think would be interested in politics or who are republicans or just quiet give me a thumbs up, say they’re definitely supporting PBO in 2012, and even if they don’t know anything, they know about Romney and Bain Capital. They know he bankrupted companies and made millions. They also know about him saying Let Detroit Go Bankrupt. This is why the beltway media was freaking out. Those Bain commercials by Obama 2012 are working. They’re working because a lot of middle-class and working class people recognize themselves in those videos and know that if Romney could be so callous to that group of people, then he could screw the nation over.

BREAKING: Obama To Stop Deporting DREAM-Eligible Youth, Protecting 1 Million Undocumented Students

    Great job!!!!

    • June 15, 2012 at 9:31 am

I was just going to post this, df!! Wow.

President Obama will announce a new immigration policy this morning that will allow some undocumented students to avoid deportation and receive work authorization.
Under the president’s “deferred action” executive order, students in the U.S. who are already in deportation proceedings or those who qualify for the DREAM Act and have yet to come forward to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials, will not be deported and will be allowed to work in the United States.
An estimated 1 million young people could benefit from the deferral. To be eligible, applicants have to be between 15 and 30 years old, live in the U.S. for five years, and maintain continuous U.S. residency. People who have one felony, one serious misdemeanor, or three minor misdemeanors will be ineligible to apply. “Deferred action” will last for two years and can be renewed.

President Obama is the BEST. This speaks to the Latino community in a HUGE way. This is about talented children and young adults who have done nothing wrong except love this country with all their hearts, earned an education, and want to give back to the country they love, respect, and pledge allegiance to. When Congress doesn’t act, President Obama will. This is what America should always be about. Equality, Diversity, Fairness.

We have to spread this message everywhere. This needs a huge roll out.

This is why Pres. Obama inspires a lot of people. It’s not the politician, it’s the man. It’s the fundamentally decent human being he is.

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is celebrating Pride day by thanking LGBT servicemembers (and their “families!”). Video’s after the jump. Towleroad runs the verbate:

As we recognize Pride month, I want to personally thank all of our gay and lesbian service members, LGBT civilians, and their families for their dedicated service to our country.

Before the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” you faithfully served your country with professionalism and courage. And just like your fellow service members, you put your country before yourself.

And now—after repeal, you can be proud of serving your country, and be proud of who you are when in uniform.

The pursuit of equality is fundamental to the American story. The successful repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” proved to the Nation that just like the country we defend, we share different backgrounds, different values, and different beliefs—but together, we are the greatest military force in the world.

That “hopey changey” thing is working out just FINE!

    From Peter Hart focus group-

    * Romney is credited for being a businessman. The problem is that he remains a stick figure to most of these voters: “a good family man,” “a successful businessman,” and “rich.” For all the back-and-forth on Bain Capital, nine out of the 12 participants knew nothing about this. They perceive his personality as stiff and formal, and as nobody with whom they can identify. Few would opt to go to a ballgame with him over Obama—and those who WOULD go with Romney are looking for free food and drink. If he were lost in the forest with a group of people, voters’ primary expectation for Romney’s leadership would be that “he would buy a GPS,” “have the best cell phone around,” or “call Donald Trump.” They do not perceive him as a leader or as having a program to which voters have subscribed.

Harvey Weinstein, of the Weinstein Film Company is such an Obamabot. He’s a sweetheart. He was on CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose and Gayle King. Charlie was trying to bring up the nontroversy of Harvey’s interview with Bill Clinton when Harvey subbed for Piers Morgan on CNN. Harvey shut him down. Charlie first asked him what he thought of Pres. Obama. Harvey began waxing eloquently about PBO. How great he is for the country, how he deserves another term. How the American people need to give him 4 More Years so he can continue to implement policies that will improve the economy and our standing in the world.

Charlie then asked him about fundraising for PBO. Harvey told him he’s held multiple fundraisers for PBO and he will hold more as required. Charlie then snidely suggested that Harvey had been going to a lot of fundraisers for PBO. Harvey proudly said yes that he has and he will go to a lot more fundraisers for PBO and gladly pay whatever fee is required to attend the fundraisers.

Charlie then tried to intimate that there are problems and discord between PBO and Bill Clinton. Harvey shut that down too. Charlie then asked him who he was closer to, Pres. Obama or Bill Clinton and who he liked better. Harvey looked at him with a WTF are you trying to pull expression. He said he feels he’s very close to PBO and he likes both men equally. He then said just as he interviewed Clinton, after PBO serves his two terms, he would love to interview PBO too. He made sure to emphasize that he believes PBO will win another term because his vision for America is the right one and Romney will lead us on a path to economic destruction.

UT…will you help me draft a petition to Color of Change regarding the Repubs sabotaging the economy and PBO on purpose? I could really use your help! I think I started it on yesterday’s Rise and Shine…It occurred to me that these men that purposefully planned for the President and the country to fail owe the American people more than an apology. They all thought that they would never be caught. They should not be entitled to their pension or benefits that are paid by the taxpayers that they were trying to screw over. They have stopped important bills, judicial placements, and purposefully tried to harm this country for their own love of power more than love of country. As many people and families have been devastated by this, especially the minority communities, they were happy to continue with their treasonous ways. You have a way with words….what do you say? 🙂

The Obama Effect is the comedic story of a middle-aged insurance salesman John Thomas, played by actor Charles S. Dutton, who, after a serious health scare, becomes obsessed with President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. At a time when he is struggling to make change in his own life, his wife, played by actress Vanessa Bell Calloway, hopes that his willingness to act and get Barack Obama elected will help him make positive changes for himself.

The film co-stars comedian Kat Williams as MLK, a Republican relative who is initially opposed to voting for a Democratic candidate, and actress Meagan Good plays Tamika, John Thomas’s estranged daughter.

The Obama Effect is scheduled to be released in select theaters on July 13th via AMC Theaters

Why Obama’s Decision To Stop Deporting DREAM-Eligible Youth Is Good For The Economy

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that the DREAM Act — which Republicans blocked in 2010 — would increase federal revenues by $1.7 billion over the next 10 years, reducing federal deficits by $2.2 billion over that time. DREAM-eligible students would generate between $1.4 and $3.6 trillion in taxable income over the course of their working lives, according to a study by UCLA’s North American Integration and Development Center.
DREAM-eligible youth could also help fill the 16 million shortfall of college-educated workers that is expected to hit the U.S. by 2025, and with 31.5 percent of science and engineering graduates coming from Latino backgrounds, Obama’s decision could add 252,000 new scientists, engineers, and technical workers to the nation’s dwindling supply in those fields.
The decision will help raise wages for American workers too. “As long as a cheap, compliant pool of undocumented labor is available, employers have every reason to take advantage of the situation, keeping wages as low as possible,” Cristina Jimenez wrote in the American Prospect in 2010. “Only when undocumented immigrants have the ability to exercise complete workplace rights will they help exert upward pressure on wages and labor standards that will benefit other workers.”

Political motivation aside, Arizona’s law was viewed as an attempt to deport the state to economic prosperity. But SB 1070 only worsened Arizona’s fiscal woes, according to several studies. In the few months after its passage, Arizona’s economy lost $141 million, including $45 million in hotel and lodging cancellations and $96 million in lost commercial revenue, according to a joint study by the Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center. A drop in tourism also resulted in an estimated 2,761 jobs lost, resulting in $253 million lost in economic output. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit blocked most of SB 1070’s provisions. But if ever fully implemented, the study adds, the law would eliminate an estimated 580,000 jobs for immigrant and native-born Arizonians, shrinking the state’s economy by $48.8 billion. These figures don’t include the $1.9 million Arizona has spent to defend the state from lawsuits, which have forced Gov. Jan Brewer to establish a legal defense fund for contributions.

Here is what I simply cannot fathom. Guess what — I heard a few things in yesterday’s speech that I actually didn’t like. PBO did not emphasize certain issues and accomplishments that I think he should emphasize, in ways that I would emphasize them.

So-fucking what? The purpose of the speech was to redirect the message. Today, despite the liberal whiners, we are talking about the “CHOICE” between two visions of America. PBO took another, quite effective in my opinion, clearly defined tack on WHY the economy isn’t better than it is. And an effective frame of what Romney would do to the country. And he effectively articulated something that we really need the President to say: “This time they mean it. This is what they will do and this will be the consequences. Help me keep that from happening.”

I can look at what was accomplished in the speech although PBO did not take my ‘advice’ on what matters to me personally, assuming that every American voter knows what I know, believes what I believe, and understands.

Why is this so fucking hard for progressive pundits? Why oh why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

    • June 15, 2012 at 11:55 am

Bobfr thanks for humoring me. I know that we’ve had this discussion before but I’m having a hard time making the jump to treason. The other side got together and said let’s block the agenda of a Democratic President. That’s not new. It’s been done by members of the same party. Carter and a Democratic Congress with Ted Kennedy leading the charge. Running in the primary against his own President left little doubt he wanted Carter to fail.

McConnell said on video he wants PBO to be one term. He hasn’t walked it back. No one in the White House has said anything about treason or sedition and they probably had this information before anyone else. PBO in a Rolling Stone interview lamented that it was an effective strategy.

But for me the real key here is Harry Reid. He enabled McConnell’s agenda by adhering to 60 votes for everything. That’s unprecedented. Even when he had an 18 vote majority Reid acted like Democrats were in the minority. He refused to do anything about filibuster reform and just recently had to apologize to Freshman Dems for it. So much more stuff could have gotten passed. If the GOP had a meeting on inauguration night then Harry must have been there serving the drinks

More of that liberal media you hear about…

A senior Romney strategist offered no apologies this morning on behalf of the candidate who often holds closed-to-press meetings with voters as well as meetings with congressional leaders with which the traveling press is unaware until their conclusion.

Asked why the roundtable conversations Romney has prior to most of his public events with middle-class families or business owners are not open to the media, senior strategist Russ Schriefer responded bluntly, “Because they’re private.”

“I beg my forgiveness but having the media there doesn’t really make it an open and honest conversation,” said Schriefer, who held a briefing for the press at the campaign’s Boston headquarters before the launch of a five-day, six-state bus tour across the battleground states.

Romney has started weaving the stories of those individuals he meets behind closed doors into his stump speech.

Pressed further on why Romney’s meetings in the past few weeks with Speaker of the House John Boehner and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell were kept from the press until the politicians’ offices on the Hill released details, Schriefer was similarly unapologetic.

Romney has even said that he won’t release policy details until AFTER he’s President. Wow.

Following Obama’s Move, How Will Mitt Romney Break His Silent Treatment Of Immigration?

Evan McMorris-Santoro- June 15, 2012, 11:07 AM 1886President Obama pushed the immigration debate back into the campaign spotlight Friday when he announced an executive order that appears to be modeled on the DREAM Act. The move means big, sweeping changes for millions of children of illegal immigrants — and it effectively puts Mitt Romney in a box.

Romney has pledged to veto the version of the DREAM Act passed by the House and killed by conservatives in the Senate in 2010, and has drawn the ire of Hispanic activists by packing his primary campaign full of advisers and supporters hailing from the anti-immigration right.

In recent days, Romney’s stepped up his outreach efforts to Hispanics, a demographic that’s still largely uninterested in his candidacy. But he’s done it by avoiding any discussion of immigration at all costs — and has declined to tailor a campaign message specifically to the Hispanic community. When he spoke to the conservative Latino Coalition last month, he didn’t bring up immigration. He keeps his message to Hispanics focused solely on the economy.

But Obama’s mini-DREAM Act move will almost certainly force Romney’s hand.

Some Republican consultants weighed in to TPM on how Romney should begin a discussion about a hot-button issue he has expressly avoided.

Let’s let him know that the public is sick of Romney not being called to account for all of his blatant falsehoods and his failure to do that will reflect badly on his legacy. My theory is show hosts are raging narcissists and the only thing that would motivate them is the thought of screwing up their legacy. Whether he agrees that lying with every breath is really a character trait we should look for in a President. And why Romney feels he needs to lie, if his whole case is that the President has implemented disastrous policies, then why isn’t he presenting those policies honestly instead of lying about the President’s record, and presenting alternative policies for scrutiny and just letting the facts speak for themselves?

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but i just saw this and as someone who likes the idea behind PBO´s DREAM Act so much that she made it a topic in her English class as an aspect of the American Dream topic, I liked this:

The person from Arizona is from Gilbert, and was interviewed earlier this week by a local news station. She said she went on the website to donate $5. I could not believe it. For all the work we do and all the money that we donate, and the person that wins is presumably a first time donor! Life is just not fair. 🙂

    re-posting my comment from last night. at 7 :15 PM….how true …how true…

Ha…. One of our vendors just came in to pick up a check ( He is Hispanic ) and I had the TV on…. Rev Al…. and Rubio’s picture came on.

He started yelling at the TV and swearing……calling him the ” F” word…. The Hispanic hate him because he is trying to take away the child credit for children that are born here but there parents are not citizens…even though they are here legally….own a business and pay taxes.

The gauntlet has been thrown. Does mehmney, the coward, has the balls to pick it up ? What with having suck up to his racist base and the latinos, he is in a nutcracker. It’s test for his dishonesty. 🙂

I always think of McCain as Darth Vader at the end of “Return of the Jedi”, struggling to regain his lost humanity.

Good analogy:) Aside from this issue, I think it’s too little, too late for the bitter, angry old cloud yeller

The Romney campaign may believe it can wrap the American flag around his Wall Street associations in the general election. If so, they are probably in for a surprise. Most Americans, struggling to pay their bills and find jobs, aren’t likely to equate anyone with a Harvard MBA with our Founding Fathers. In fact, most believe the folks at the big investment banks played a major role in screwing up the economy. With good reason, by the way, since they did. Not too long ago, in fact, conservatives also railed against billion-dollar bailouts of Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs. And to this day, astonishingly, more Americans blame Bush (and free market Republicans) than President Obama for our current economic mess. The question Americans are in the process of asking about Mitt Romney is not whether capitalism is a good thing, but whether he is a Mr. Fix-It or a Mr. Screwed-It-Up. A Warren Buffet or an Ivan Boesky. How the majority of Americans answer those questions will decide the election.

Romney’s team, then, is going to have to do more than label any attack on Wall Street an attack on America. Instead he needs to differentiate himself (and Bain Capital) quickly from the Hank Paulsons and Jamie Dimons of the world. He needs to demonstrate, in a systematic way, how his efforts created new companies and new jobs. Oh, and it might help to get his facts straight too. The last thing anyone wants to be in this election, in this economy, is the candidate of Wall Street.

Indeed. Last night, someone posted a Political propaganda piece that surmised that the First Dog, Bo, may be a negative for the President, because people who are struggling won’t want to see Bo frolicking on the White House lawn. The truth is, I’d rather see the dog frolicking, than dressage horses frolicking for the Romney elite at a cost of millions of dollars, surrounded by the Wall Street gamblers that are funding the GOP for promises of de-regulation.
