The construction workers at Ground Zero are waiting for their President, trying to be as calm as they possibly can under prevailing circumstances. But I can see the palpable excitement bubbling just beneath the surface.

What bothers me is—–just caught up in previous thread—if “the speech is too long” memo came from Boehner’s secy, who likely got it from Rove, why does the media always give them power to set the message?—–who has a gun to whose head? And I understand when the usual rt. wing pundits roll with what they’re given, but why do some supposed Dem friendly pundits ALSO take that message and run with it? (Alter) Why do many Dem pundits allow GOPolitico/Morning Joke to set the message of the day, the prevailing analysis on a current subject? Why aren’t we—-Dems/liberals—-on the offense, firing off our take on events—-pounding the media—–immediately and aggressively? At least give the anchors competing messages.

Even though we have all seen it many times, it is just amazing that so many people feel so comfortable with PBO that they cling to him as they would their nearest and dearest. One of the students from the science and technology school that he visited earlier in the week said that he was like a family member.

Yea, baby! Let those “free market” billionaires run the economy and make their own rules! It all will trickle down!

Reuters) – Former billionaire Allen Stanford was sentenced to 110 years in prison on Thursday for running a $7 billion scheme in which he stole money from his investors to finance an extravagant lifestyle in the Caribbean.

U.S. District Judge David Hittner said Stanford’s actions were among the most “egregious criminal frauds,” and investors who lost money said Stanford’s crimes were worse than those of Bernard Madoff, another Ponzi schemer.

In March, a jury convicted Stanford of 13 charges including fraud and conspiracy for selling certificates of deposit from his bank in Antigua to thousands of investors in the United States and Latin America. He had already spent some of those proceeds on yachts, girlfriends, sponsorship of a cricket tournament and other accoutrements of a high-rolling life.

As I write this, I’m listening (via Steve Benen) to the president’s speech in Ohio today, for which a transcript it appears to be unavailable. I like what I’m hearing, not only because it frames the election as a choice between two stark, fundamentally different visions of what the country needs economically, but because it implicitly challenges Republicans to explain exactly what they are proposing now that Bush and company didn’t propose during the ‘oughts.

No, Obama hasn’t come up with some brilliant new slogan or sound-bite. But he has, finally, begun the hard but necessary task of explaining that conservative ideology, whether it’s promoted by George W. Bush or Mitt Romney, is inherently bad for middle-class economic prospects. I particularly like his adoption of Bill Clinton’s line that Romney’s economic policies are Bush’s policies “on steroids.” Maybe if he repeats that a few hundred times, Team Mitt will finally have to explain exactly how its policies differ from those of Bush, and admit that it’s mainly a matter of even more regressive taxes and an assault on the New Deal and Great Society legacy that Bush could only dream about.

Democratic Rep. Mark Critz (PA) – a top GOP target for defeat this fall running in a district Obama lost by nine points in 2008 – veered off the reservation Thursday, going on the record with criticisms of President Obama’s economic speech in Ohio that souded like they were written in a Republican comms shop.

        From PoliticsPA:

“President Obama and others in Washington need to realize that we cannot spend our way to prosperity,” Critz said. In order to create jobs, he added, “we need to address unfair trade deals that ship jobs overseas and enact policies that allow us to take advantage of our vast natural resources such as coal and natural gas in a safe and responsible manner which will lower energy costs and create jobs and approving the Keystone XL Pipeline would be a good first step.”

Obama to America: Romney’s got nothin’
    By Greg Sargent
    1) The central idea in the speech — that Washington is in a “stalemate” about how to move forward that only the American people can break — was the answer to a clear strategic dilemma. Obama needs to figure out how to highlight GOP obstructionism of his policies in a way that will matter to the American people. The risk has always been that swing voters won’t care why Obama can’t get jobs policies passed, and will simply conclude that he’s been too weak and ineffective to fix the economy, even if they agree with his basic values and priorities, leading them to pick someone who can just get something done already.

NEW YORK (WABC) — President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama return to New York City Thursday to visit the World Trade Center site and to attend a pair of fund raisers.

They will join governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie, as well as Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in getting a firsthand look at the construction progress.

The president will meet with construction workers, and he’ll also sign a beam to go atop the 1,776-foot tower.

The Obamas arrived at Kennedy Airport at 4:30 p.m. and will depart at 11:35 p.m., and you can expect street and highway closings in Lower Manhattan and Midtown.
Also, the PATH station at the World Trade Center will be closed from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., making things tough for commuters during the evening rush.

“From 3 to 6, you’re really inconveniencing a lot of commuters,” straphanger Mary Grech said. “There has to be a better way to go about it rather than putting out how many thousands of riders out of commission, and having to find another way home.”

I can imagine what they are saying/feeling. I have been there – well not there, but outside the fence a few months after 9/11 looking at the site as best we could with tears in our eyes. Thank you Mr. President and Michelle for going there today. I love you; I love NYC!
