President Obama departs the White House for Fort Belvoir, Virginia for a round of golf, June 9

Thanks for all the comments on the last post, I’m working today so won’t have a chance to reply, but will catch up asap. Special thanks to those who argued it out, even when they disagreed; to those who read my own comments as a suggestion that PBO isn’t doing enough ….. oh boy. I think he’s done more than enough, that’s the point.

See you tomorrow.

    Greetings TOD family

We cannot control the Obama campaign, the media, the Romney campaign, or most of the other things that will influence the election from now until Nov.

We have absolute control over ourselves and our reactions to events.

Here is what I plan to do.

I will attend every OFA event in my community. The only thing that will cause me to miss is a family commitment or illness. I will go to trainings that end up being boring, I will speak to folks at markets that are irritating, rude, or insufferable, and when I run into “disappointed” or “frightened” Democrats I will express my support for PBO in a confident voice (even if I am scared inside).

I will make phone calls even if it we don’t win (like In Wisconsin) because that is what members of a team do, they trust their leaders and do the work. Everyday – I will do the work.

I will never give up, no matter how discouraging the job numbers, the fund raising totals, or the media hype. The President’s “boring” stump speech that some have alluded to has the following phrase. “if you have an ounce of fight left in you – I have a ton of fight left in me”. I will continue to contribute my ounce of fight until Nov 6.

I will contribute $$ to Chips or Donna every month, and I will trust that the money will be spent on effective ads and hard working staffers.

When I post to this blog I will make my comments constructive, positive, and helpful. I WILL NOT use this blog as a dumping ground for every worry and insecurity that comes my way.

I will manage my negative emotions in my own way. For me that means gardening, eating chocolate or veggie potato chips, and walking my dog. I will not expect this blog to reassure all my fears, explain every negative story that is published, or pump me up emotionally everyday.

I will post CALLS TO ACTION and would hope that those here respond in any way they can. Monday I plan to post a CALL to contact Congress about the jobs bill.

I thank all the folks who responded to the open letters with supportive comments about the campaign, candidate, and OFA.

I am extremely grateful that many provided a summary of what they have been doing at OFA. For months I have posted notes asking folks to share this information, and frankly have gotten very little response, other than “thanks for what your are doing Linda”. Note to group – I don’t post these notes to get an “atta girl” , I post them to get all of you to pile on with your accomplishments. I do it because reading this information makes us stronger and more confident. I do it so that anyone who is not yet in an OFA will ask for help either by posting to the blog or sending me an email. whatisiworking@gmail.com

If this blog thread causes us get into the habit of posting what we are doing EVERY WEEK then it has been a productive exercise.

Now I am off to edit the 22 minute speech by Governor Patrick, the middle part of the speech needs to be viewed by each of us – EVERYDAY.

WIW, best advice ever. We can’t control the big picture. We can’t control either the Democratic or Republican parties or world events, but we can control what we do. Which means we can take a productive step each day by reaching out to people and being the best possible ambassadors for our beloved president. I am raising both my thumbs to you!

NEVER FORGET. The Bushies turned many politically appointed jobs into Civil Service positions, to keep Obama from getting rid of them. On top of everything else, PBO has to deal with moles in every agency.

If there is ANYONE on this planet, who thinks he or she would have or could have done more than PBO, under these poisonous circumstances, PLEASE, run for office. If not, PLEASE give this man credit for doing a GREAT job, not just a GOOD job. Look beyond the headlines at the governance. FACTS matter.

Also, the Repugs keep congress in technical session, to keep PBO from making recess appointments. The totality of obstruction by the Repugnants is breath-taking. ‘Liberals’ who think PBO would be able to clean-up this mess are in denial about the scope of the problem. They must stop this magical-thinking.

Hey Zekke you asked me how to post a tweet on TOD. Here’s how you do it.

            1. You’re already on twitter so I’ll assume you’re already familiar with the tweeting process.

            2. When you place your mouse over the tweet or your tweet you’ll see things like “View Conversation” “Reply” “Retweet” “Favorite”

            3. Click on the tweet to “open” the tweet.

            4. You’ll see the time, date, and mode of electronic device the tweet was sent from, and you’ll also see “details”. Example: 6:39PM – 9 Jun 12 via Web – Details.

            5. Click on “Details” It will take you to a separate webpage where you can see a bigger version of the tweet.

            6. Click on the URL in the address bar. It becomes highlighted. Right click. Click on “Copy.”

            7. Then come to TOD. Click in the comment box. Right click. Click on “Paste”

            8. When you click “Post Comment” your tweet appears in a box like everyone else’s.

            9. If your tweet doesn’t fully appear, Refresh the page and voilà it appears like everyone else’s.

If this is confusing, please let me know and I’ll walk you step-by-step again. 😀

Margaret, the Republicans are trying to get into my vagina again. I wish I knew what was up there that they find so interesting. This time it was about sex-selective abortions with a bill sponsored by Trent Franks of Arizona. In spite of the pressing issues with the economy, Speaker of the House John Boehner justified Congress spending more time worrying about a woman’s womb by saying, “This is an important issue to the American people. This type of sex selection most Americans find pretty repulsive, and our members feel strongly about it. That’s why it is being brought to the floor.” Am I wearing orange colored glasses or did Boehner just pretend to care about women?

Don’t look now, but some of those journalists are digging deeper..

When Romney took office in 2003, Massachusetts, like many other states, was reeling from a sharp drop in tax collections in the aftermath of Sept. 11 and the dot-com bust. The state constitution required a balanced budget, and its shortfall had ballooned to $3 billion.

But Democrats controlled both houses of the Legislature, as they had since the 1950s. Philosophically, they were sharply at odds with the Republican Romney, an outsider and corporate takeover executive who had campaigned on a pledge to “clean up the mess on Beacon Hill,” the site of the gold-domed state Capitol in Boston.

In Massachusetts, the governor proposes a budget, but a Legislature dominated by the opposing party can ignore it and adopt its own. The governor can veto spending, line by line, but lawmakers, unbowed, can then assert their power to override — a ritual of Romney’s tenure.

Romney was unsparing in his vetoes, risking political fallout far and wide. He reduced allocations for state police and local sheriff’s departments. He deleted spending on suicide prevention, emergency food aid, job training, higher education, treatment for gambling addiction and services for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. His rationale was simple: The state couldn’t afford it.

Just before Thanksgiving, plans for Romney cuts targeting the homeless, mentally ill, deaf, autistic and others led to a blast of bad publicity. Fearing it could get worse, Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney’s communications director, asked the governor’s budget team whether the Goodwill hall where Romney planned to serve turkey to the needy might be facing cuts.

“The safer bet is to have the Gov serve meals in NH,” Romney’s budget director, Thomas Trimarco, responded to Fehrnstrom in an email obtained by The Times. Romney spends some holidays at a family vacation home in New Hampshire.

By then, Romney had long established austerity as his default position. He had blocked retroactive raises for state university employees, resisted extensions of unemployment benefits and refused to sign a measure to sweeten the pensions of school nurses.

“While it is important to acknowledge nurses’ contributions in the lives of our children,” he wrote in a letter to the Legislature, “it is equally important that we not pass along new unfunded financial liabilities to those same children when they become taxpayers.”

yes the details in this article do not bode well for us if this same mitt the bullying pathological liar were to be placed in the Oval Office.

I also notice that the same dude, Eric Fehrnstrom, was also the Romney’s communications director so lying comes quite naturally to these guys because they have been at it for a very long time.

    • June 9, 2012 at 8:52 pm

No wonder Mitt hightailed his sorry azz out of Massachusetts with the hard drives in tow. He was a worthless governor. The local radio host was trying hard to remember just who Mitt reminded her of this morning, when all of a sudden it came to her; Herman Munster. Poor Herman was oblivious to the fact, that he looked, and sounded like a creep to most people. I don’t know, Herman was much more likeable, and Grandpa remembered to give him a heart when he put him together.

LL, Have been catching up on all debts Spanish. Spain asked for €146 billion and got only €100 billion. Bloomburg says they need at least €350 billion and someone else says up to €700 billion. If the market is up on Monday, it is even more corrupt than I thought.

No one was doing the accounting and that is a big part of the problem. It makes sense. If Ireland already has a €60 billion loan and needs another €20, for a total of €80 billion, then why would bigger Spain only need €100 billion when they had exactly the same problem as Ireland but on a much, much larger scale. My guess is that somewhere north of €600 billion is what they need.

God, what a complete and utter cockup. The EU bit off more than it could chew with letting countries like Spain and Greece—and even Italy—join the currency without a common monetary and fiscal policy. I really fear for the future of the EU.

And youth unemployment in Spain is over 50%. There are only 2 viable choices now and they have been the same for quite a while. Either the EU inflates the hell out of the Euro such that we carry around the phone bill money in a wheelbarrow, OR the EU breaks up. There are no other choices. Angela must be on some happy drug.

Another great idea from the campaign

A “State Dinner” just for kids

Calling all kid chefs: Here’s your chance to share your favorite delicious and nutritious lunch recipe with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Let’s Move!, the First Lady’s initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation, is looking for parents or legal guardians of creative kid chefs from all over the country to submit their child’s recipe for a healthy and nutritious lunch.

So if your kids have some skills in the kitchen, we hope you’ll take the time to share their recipes. We’ll invite a winning child and their parent or legal guardian from each state and territory to join us for a Kid’s “State Dinner.”

LEBANON, Ore. — After nearly 47 years, friends and relatives in the Willamette Valley town of Lebanon, Ore., have been able to bury a Vietnam War airman killed in action on Christmas Eve 1965.

Chief Master Sgt. Arden Hassenger was laid to rest with full military honors Friday.

Hassenger joined the Air Force and served as a gunner on several missions during the war. He was 29 when he died in a plane crash in Laos. An investigation team recently found the crash site and his remains.

Hassenger’s wife, Sherrie, called it “a beautiful day even though it rained.” Now 73, she recalled her husband as “very sweet, very loving, very honest and everything he ever did was done perfect.”

It just never ends, does it ? When my brother got off the plane..he kissed the ground…..

Howard Dean’s brother, Charlie, was killed in Laos in 1974 and his remains were found in 2003. Howard said his brother was his inspiration for public service, and he wore his belt everyday during his presidential campaign.

Stories such as these are one of the many reasons draft dodging French missionary Willard cannot ever become POTUS.

A letter to our President. Am posting it for you to read and to have a TOD URL that I can include in a series of Tweets that I’ll be sharing with various folk. Hope you will find it helpful.

    9 June 2009

    Dear Mr President,

The scale of the threat to the Republic is obvious. Today, America faces a threat at least as dangerous to the Republic as the outbreak of Civil War in 1861.

The threat is the coordinated assault on every right and social compact that are the foundation of the unique promise that is America.

With the Supreme Court’s abdication to secretive, ultra-wealthy individuals a vast financial resource now is poised to buy both politicians and elections.

With willful and persistent support of various State Governors the core principal of democracy – each citizen’s right to vote – is being destroyed.

With near unanimous participation of Republicans in the Senate and House, a singular objective, was plotted on 20 Jan 2009 and has been on full display ever since – destroy your Presidency as to obliterate any chance of your re-election irrespective of the cost, even if means hurtling the Nation into a global great depression.

With almost all broadcast and print media doing 24/7 attacks on him and providing unrestrained support of a person who is recognized, world-wide, as a pathological liar motivated by a lust for power characteristic of the world’s most deplorable dictators, the ’4th Estate’ is corrupt. It is owned by and in service of a small number of plutocrats.

In the face of their assault, you have achieved a record of spectacular successes.

We must be the ’4th Estate’ – relentlessly, through every form of media we can access, and by conversing with as many citizens between now and close of polls on 6 Nov 2012, to ensure victory.

We need every American to face the reality of how grievous a threat to the Republic the Koch, Romney plutocrats are. They have avowed to dismantle every aspect of the American dream. Their actions are totally consistent with their vow. We have never faced a more dangerous or persistent enemy (they’ve been at this since the day Nixon was inaugurated in 1969).

We don’t get a second chance to win this defining battle. We either do it on 6 Nov 2012 or America may exist in name, but not in the spirit of the just, empathetic and equitable society you, FDR, Lincoln, the Founders and countless millions have envisioned and dedicated their lives to achieving.

    Thank you,

DJ and Social Commenter Jay Smooth Says People Should Be More Afraid of Mitt Romney

DJ and social commenter Jay Smooth, whose work can be found at WBAI 99.5 FM in New York, illdoctrine.com, YouTube and NPR, argues that people should be much more afraid of Mitt Romney than they currently are. In his latest web video, Smooth makes the case that Romney is comparable to Woody Allen’s character in the movie Zelig, in that he morphs into a copy of the people he is surrounded by.

Having concerns are great, but always loosing hope and beating one down really is silly. Messaging needs to improve and quick. That I agree. I have said so for almost 4 yrs. The media will not help has not helped and never will help. The Obama Team has got to get 10 to 12 true surrogates who do nothing but sale this president and defend him unequivocally. Bob Shrum, Steve Cafenis(sp), the former gov of OH, etc need to be out there speaking and countering the lies 24/7. Doing it alone is good and well, but not when $3-4B would used to attack the president.

Calling out Wiilard’s Lies need to be stated with the media. No more being too nice. Summers 2009, 2020, 2011 were not very good for this president. Not enough time to make it up. Let Us not get in this we have got time. The urgency is now. Let us put the TBGOPers and Romney in defense for the Summer and Fall.

one thing that’s happened today is everybody’s had a chance to define their beliefs, re-commit to trusting our leaders, and make positive public statements about how we’re going forward together to win this election.

sometimes we need that ‘devil’s advocate’ to energize our thinking. we can get that here, as well as getting the happy news and the mutual support, knowing that the ‘devil’s advocate’ is also on the side of pbo. our conversations are constructive, and built to support the president. – from susanne in the last thread.

The last time I checked, teachers, cops and firefighters were working hard raising families, buying groceries, paying mortgages/rent, buying cars, paying for their children’s education, sending their young adult children to the military, saving their money in banks, and, overall, playing a major role in “promoting the general welfare” of the country in accordance with the preamble of the U.S. Constitution.

In my humble opinion a teacher, a police man/woman, and a fire fighter, is more valuable to this country than a vulture capitalist. We all need to remind Romney that being President is not the same thing as being a CEO of Bain capital or Koch industries. The government of the United States, as well as State and local governments, cannot function without the labor of public employees. Right now Willard Romney is being protected by public employees, better known as the Secret Service. Romney himself is running to be a public employee; and so are all the Republicans holding/running for office at all levels of government, local, state, and federal.

Ok this need some pushback….I can tell you guys one thing, after the reelection of President Obama, I am done with the media….I’ll follow the President in all he does, his speeches and all that but the rest…..*click*

But for the next 5 months…..we need to get the truth out…..

    Just saw this on Twitter…..

CBS:: “Liberals Threaten Not To Vote In November Over Disappointment With Obama.”

Ok the approval rating is ” Obama’s approval with liberal Dems? 89%”

Their source: Netroots Nation! They must have interviewed Jane Hamsher……..geezzz…..they are not supporters, never were supporters.

Maybe Jane. But check out what the one and only Van Jones had to say. At first he mentions a few of the good things PBO has done and then….”we have been crushed by the President.” Lord Van Jones giveth and he taketh away.

This is a fine example of how the media tries to manipulate people with their false memes. If 89% of libs approve of Obama, the headline CBS chose does not match the data. And this has been the problem with the media where PBO is concerned. The headlines and propaganda are negatively spun and do not comport with reality.

Willard still cannot get more than 75% of the conservative votes, while he twists and turns, flip-flops, hangs out with racists, spew teabagger rhetoric just to make nice with the RWers, yet you hardly hear anything in the media about low enthusiasm for Willard, or conservatives still not really accepting.

Only “bad” news for PBO as far as the corrupt media is concerned.

Thus, hf, the sentence in my letter to President Obama:

“With almost all broadcast and print media doing 24/7 attacks on him and providing unrestrained support of a person who is recognized, world-wide, as a pathological liar motivated by a lust for power characteristic of the world’s most deplorable dictators, the ’4th Estate’ is corrupt. It is owned by and in service of a small number of plutocrats.”

We know the situation. So does he.

We are the ones to be the media, 24/7, and we now have the tools. Let’s use them, maximally!

      Thank you.

Those liberals need to listen to Gov. Patrick’s speech, and grow the heck up! All they do is whine. They don’t work for progress, they just write, always preaching to the choir. I wonder if any of them have called or canvassed or………I doubt it.
Let’s take a poll: How many of us are disappointed in these so-called Liberals? I bet that would be about 99%!

ok – I’ve been offline all day, reconnecting with an old friend I worked with at Disneyland, whom I hadn’t seen in……. a long time.

I missed out on the last thread, but I’d like to briefly jump in.

I didn’t read the Tomasky piece, but I thought the press conference was was beyond obvious: To remind everyone just how much of a SERIAL LIAR Mitt Romney is. Romney runs an add saying President Obama hasn’t had ANY JOBS PLAN EVER, which even the GOPMEDIA points out is a GROSS, BLATANT LIE. Mitt continues to run the ad. President Obama has a press conference to REMIND those with goldfish memories, ESPECIALLY Mitt, about President Obama’s AMERICAN JOBS PLAN that the Congress has only passed part of, but the Republicans have mostly BLOCKED for no other reason than to tank the economy.

It was BRILLIANT. It was SIMPLE. It was a GIFT. Where is the confusion???

    Keep Calm and Carry On.

However. The LA Kings are making my hair fall out.

Indeed! I just can’t imagine where I would be without all the teachers who taught and inspired me throughout my life. A society that devalues teachers while elevating greedy money makers is on the road to ruin. This worship of money makers goes against the idea of good citizenship. I hope the American people will not vote for a man who wants to turn the U.S. government into a business who sole purpose is to make money for a few lucky people.

WHINER 4 Life? Lord! I see that you all have been VERY BUSY while I stepped out on “a date” with my handsome son…I went to see a lacrosse movie with him…(lacrosse player that he is..this one was easy!) Had a nice time, good, enjoyable movie. No Academy Award winner, but it was nice to have the game of lacrosse showcased in a movie like this. Great sport.
For those couple hours, i thought of nothing else but the movie….and my son sitting next to me. He’s 17, so we won’t get too much more time like this. Mamma bliss.

Maybe 10 years….. Anyway, I had fun, and I think that he did too, and that’s good enough for me.

    Hi everyone,
I’ve have deliberately gone off the media grid this past 6 days, and boy has the whole world gone bonkers. Going through the last thread just made me so sad.

All I can say is, it is likely Pres. Obama is just exhausted. He’s been running on this hamster’s wheel since before he took office just trying to save this hell of a country from falling off the cliff. And he’s done this facing unprecedented headwinds from the Repugs and the whiners in his own party. At this point if I were him I have gotta be wondering why the hell am I all alone fighting this corporate tsunami when the American people themselves don’t care to fight themselves. For example the exit polling from Wisconsin annoyed me more than the actual vote tally. Why? What the heck were those Wisconsin union households thinking voting for the very guy going full throttle to take away their worker rights? And don’t get me started on the stupid argument that they were against the idea of “recalls” BS! This is a governor ACTIVELY taking away every damn rights people have had since the era of FDR, and he didn’t flinch that it was “improper” to gut people’s rights. So why are the voters being polite? It tells me that people in this country have turned helplessly nihilistic under the phantom assumption that acquiescing is the best way to make “peace” with the corporate overlords than to fight them. So this is the current shape of the rank and file American public. They don’t know what they want except some vague notion of “freedom”, “cut spending”, ‘get government out of our lives”. Well there you have it. Americans are gonna have to learn the lesson the hard way. SUFFER till they bleed.

Unfortunately many of us will be undeservedly caught up in the dystopian wave ready to descend on us whether now or in 2016 (if Pres. Obama prevails this time). the Democratic party is utterly decrepit. I wrote this way back in 2010 that PBO winning in 2008 delayed the day of reckoning for American liberals who ceded so much public persuasion real estate after the Vietnam war and sat back while the virulent movement right wing forces bought up every damns megaphone in sight. When PBO won there was no liberal movement in place to amplify his voice. HE CANNOT BE EXPECTED TO CARRY THE ENTIRE LOAD ALONE!!!!! So rightfully the guy is damn tired!! Saving a country from self-destructing all by himself. He’s human after all, not a superhuman. Romney can skate by because he has a whole armada of wingnuts carrying his cause from every conceivable direction, and amplified by a dutiful corporate media. What do Democrats do when they do get on the public airwaves? They selfishly undermine the President and shamelessly promote themselves, from Cory Booker to Bill Clinton. If I were Pres. Obama why would I continue to care about a fucking party and country that myopically fails to see the apocalypse that the repugs WILL certainly ring upon us. why?

Of course I don’t have the large heart & smarts that PBO has (which is why he IS President and I’m not). But let’s cut him some slack, it’s just the beginning of summer and we ourselves have got to want this real bad cuz it is we who WILL suffer not PBO if things don’t go our way in Nov. As for him the world will just snap him up pronto for bigger and more appreciated causes. He will do fine. We will not.

So the fight is entirely ours. He’ll fight as hard as he knows how but we can’t sit back and expect him to work miracles when many of our fellow Americans are spouting wingnut bullshit backed by gazillioin $$$. It’s on us.

    • June 10, 2012 at 11:22 am

You know ZiZi2, I think it is time that we call out all the Democrats in the House and Senate to stand up and be counted this Election otherwise next time round they will be replaced. I cannot understand how when they get the opportunity to appear in front of the cameras they can’t seem to articulate their and President Obama’s achievements. They allow themselves to be drowned out by the others and they leave with no impression as to what they as a party have done and will do for the People.

Ok, sunday joke (well, it’s sunday for me). jovie – you may not want to read further. You have been warned

A couple, Uncle John and Jane, were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Since it was a BFD, all near & dear were at the party and were asking the couple what’s the secret of their successful marriage.

    Uncle John said

We went on our honeymoon and wanted to go horse riding together. So we got ourselves two horses to ride. Mine was a docile one and didn’t make a fuss when I got on it. Your aunt Jane’s horse was a hopped up young mare. The first time she tried to mount it, it threw your aunt down. Your aunt said “Oh, it’s ok. It’s the first time”. She dusted herself and tried to get on the horse again. And again the horse threw her down and your aunt said “Oh, it’s ok, it’s only the second time”. When the horse threw her down for the third time, she pulled a gun and shot that horse. I was horrified and shouted at her, “Jane, what’s wrong with you ? Why did you shoot that poor animal down? Are you nuts? “. Your aunt Jane looked at me and calmly said “It’s first time”. After that, our marriage worked famously.
