Before I Sleep….

Hi everyone, I know I said ‘see you tomorrow’ in the last post, and here I am. 😕

But before I have to run again ….

… more thanks for all the replies earlier (I haven’t had a chance to read each one yet, but I will), BWD’s post at TOAITR, and my own for-what-it’s-worth comments on that post, were always going to result in a fairly heated discussion, but I really appreciate the vast majority of you who didn’t resort to insults and just made your arguments.

Special thanks to two of my most loved bloggers, SmartyPants and Eclectablog, for their thoughts.

To those who opted for insults ….. a big fat sigh. Really woeful stuff. Comparing what you read here today – a frustrated plea for the campaign to better promote PBO’s extraordinary achievements – with Hamsher, Uygur, Greenwald and Co’s Koch-fuelled efforts to encourage their sheeple to ensure his defeat? Seriously, you see no difference?

And to the 13 ‘I’m a lurker, I’ve never commented here before, but….’ folk stuck in pending when I got back to the blog tonight …. why is it you people only ever try to emerge from lurkdom when you sense division here?? Why don’t you ever appear to offer encouragement and support in difficult times? Please, f**k right off, to FirebaggerLake, or whatever sewer you crawled out of.

As I said before, there is no end to my respect for David Axelrod and David Plouffe, and I still trust that they will get it right this year and ensure the campaign is successful.

But, yeah, and I know most of you disagree: I think they could be doing a whole lot better now, before the MSM/Romney narrative is set in stone. That’s what this frustration is all about, at the end of a completely shitty week. PBO should be 20 pts clear of that contemptible, vacuous, amoral, worthless shitbag, but thanks to the MSM – and, in my humble opinion, the feeble efforts of the campaign – it’s still too close to call. That’s just mindblowing to me.

So, no, I never ever claimed PBO isn’t doing enough, as one of you said I did. He’s done 100 times more than enough to be re-elected, comfortably. I have no words for how much I love, respect and admire him – as I keep saying, I feel blessed to be alive in his time. But I just think his campaign advocates have to be a little more fierce in their attempts to spread the story of his achievements.

We’ll agree to differ, though, we’ve had our say.

Thanks again

It’s gonna be a long 5 months, Chips. We have to be here for each other. We’re all we have.

And I’m going to write a completely history geek essay for TPV on the Battle of Cannae and how it relates to PBO’s strategy. God, I’m a nerd.

Thanks for the , LL! Me loves nerds! Yeah, it’ll be a long 5 months, but we’ll be fine. Humanity disappoints me regularly, as I often, I’m sure, disappoint humanity, but I’ll never believe things have gotten so awful that Romney could ever be President. I’m keeping the faith.

I agree with you, completely HF. It seems to me that part of the policy is to let Willard spend reams of money boxing himself into a corner, especially on teachers, firemen, and policeman. There are very big guns being prepared for later in the summer. Hang tight.

      June 10, 2012 at 7:51 am

Exactly. It would be foolish of them to do as some are advocating and play all their cards now. It’s not even September yet. A lot of people aren’t paying attention. A lot of people haven’t tuned in. One must not use their love of politics as a gauge for all voters. When PBO repeats the same message, it’s a good thing. It helps to cement his accomplishments in the voting publics eyes and build a narrative that defines exactly who Romney is: A greedy money grubbing, dishonest shyster who will wreck the middle-class with Bush 2.0 policies.

People need to back off the campaign and stop telling them what to do. Telling them ” You Must” “You Should” “Why Aren’t You” Blah blah blah blah. Enough. When you watch a movie or a play, there’s a beginning, a middle, a climax, and the end. You can’t scream for the climax to come before the beginning right? That’s how it is with a campaign.

So all these doom and gloom memes to be put on lockdown because President Obama has an excellent team a lot of whom are behind the scenes doing work that would make our collective heads spin at the juggernaut nature of it.

  15. June 10, 2012 at 12:10 am

I read an interesting piece the other day about the timing of all things politics for the remainder of campaign season. The author made a pretty good case for not being concerned about what is going on right now. Was it Smartypants who wrote it? Can’t recall. Anyway there is an outline of the calendar that includes the timing of the Olympics (where politics will be suspended), then the RNC Convention, followed by the DNC Convention and THEN people will be paying attention.

As far as memes being set in stone, I think in Romney’s case that ship has already sailed. People plain just don’t like the man. The more they learn about him, the less they like him. 40% of voters will vote for him anyway; so we can just write them off. Women are the key to this election. Romney doesn’t connect with women. At ALL.

Romney just does not have, nor is he able to build (because he has the lamest campaign in history) a functioning infrastructure to compete on the ground. That is where this election will be fought in the end. The average person doesn’t care who is winning which news cycle.

So yeah, I’m happy with our chances here. It will be different than ’08, but still interesting. For those of us in a position to talk with actual voters instead of pundit nonsense, we will have a much clearer picture of what kind of support the President is getting in the months to come. This is why I pay zero attention to the pundits or the polls. I can’t influence voters in swing states. I can influence voters in my neighborhood. They will tell me what’s what in this campaign, not the news, or silly twits getting paid to pretend they’re smarter than me. They were all DEAD WRONG in ’08. They will be this time, too.

I attended a city event yesterday (someone said 75,000 in attendance) as an Obama volunteer doing tabling. It was a pride event and our materials were flying out as people picked them up and our pledge cards (to support the President) and our voter registration numbers were huge. A volunteer who walked in the parade they had earlier in the day told me a roar came up from the crowd when they walked by with a sign supporting the President. Also talked with one woman at length who came up to the table who said this year was so different at the festival, the atmosphere was so positive and everyone seemed so joyful. She credited the President with that. I know I asked people to read the brochure we had with a timeline with accomplishments on LGBT issues and their eyes told me they were very glad to get the information. I also told anyone who said they were worried or nervous about the outcome of the campaign to volunteer. Its the greatest antidote I could recommend.

Let’s do a little REVIEW. Kennedy, Johnson, nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, shrub and The President. Is it tough? REALLY?

Ok, OK. Let’s THROW OUT the OUTLIERS. Kennedy was only there for 3 years before he was assassinated. AND let’s face it JFK’s life and record is absolutely SHROUDED in MYSTIQUE.

shrub? NO ONE EVER imagined a president that ill-suited, unprepared and incompetent for the office. It sickened MOST AMERICANS and he left office with a 30% approval rating. (No time now to recap the DAMAGE he did with his sociopath VP.)

Let’s throw out those outliers!!! Sooo: Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and The President.

Is it hard at ALL to recognize the GREATEST President in OUR lifetimes??

Well got through the last few posts. Tell ya what. Got a lot of work to do. There are a bunch of us here working our wee little tushies off. OK. Mine’s not so wee. But still you get the gist.

I appreciate our discussions. I think it’s helpful in a sense because when I’m “out there” I’m hit with all manner of opinions; the way I look at it it’s up to me to know my PBO and push back to the extent that I am able and then be at peace with myself in the knowledge that I’m doing the best I can or all I can to help re-elect our wonderful President.

My heart is calm on this issue and I feel that our cause is correct and on the right side of history. I know there will be times of uncertainty and there will be times of trial, but I will not budge from my post. I will see this thing through and then the work still won’t be done. We will have 2016 to think on. There is much work in saving our Republic. Thankyou People of TOD for all of your hard and untiring work. You are an inspiration to me and help me to keep going. 🙂

Folks on this site understand the massive change in our population, economy, society and the world that we’ve seen in the last 30+ years. Vast change. We NEED THIS GREAT PRESIDENT to help us make our society and institutions adapt to this change. No amount of racist nostalgia can change REALITY. NO WEALTHY out-of-touch CLUELESS lying shit-bag can take us back to 1958. IT’S NOT POSSIBLE.

    June 10, 2012 at 12:57 am

I’ve been away for the last couple of days and haven’t checked TOD. Decided to catch up before heading for bed and was pretty surprised to see some of the comments. First let me reiterate my thanks to Chips and BWD for all you do and have done. Second, I think it is seriously unfair to criticize either of them as being emprogs or “hair on fire” types because they have some concerns. We seem to be forgetting that PBO wants everyone’s opinion before he makes a decision. While no one here is making campaign decisions, volunteers do hear what voters are saying or what they know. Third, I’ve felt since the passage of ACA that there was a messaging problem as evidenced by poll after poll and I still believe that. Even pretty educated, knowledgeable folks that I talk with do not understand all the benefits that will accrue under the ACA when it is fully implemented. Fourth, while the advice to turn of the TV is great (mine has been off for 10 days with the exception of the WI election returns) that does NOT address the problem that the vast majority of voters get their “news” from the tube. Fifth, I am beginning to believe that the biggest threat is the low level of info with so many voters, due in large part to our decline in educational standards, which Romney would lower further by not funding teachers. I saw a survey the other day that 25% of SC adults surveyed did not know who the VP of the US was! What rock have these folks been living under for the last four years? PBO has had Biden out there more than any other VP that I recall in my lifetime!

Finally, when we disagree about something, let’s try to keep the adjectives and adverbs to a minimum and follow PBO’s example. I cannot imagine him jumping on anyone for constructive criticism. And let’s be clear, the criticism was not of him but of the campaign itself. This is NOT 2008 when the Dems had a built in advantage after 8 years of Bush, and as much as I love Ax and Plouffe, they have not run a reelection campaign of a sitting President previously. I believe in my heart that PBO will be reelected but I recognize there are so many things out of his control including the European economy and a recalcitrant Congress. It’s going to be a long hard battle and this should be the “safe” place where supporters can occasionally vent frustration without being attacked. Just my two cents. G’night!

    • June 10, 2012 at 7:51 am

Smart comment, foxfire—–thanks. I could do without the name-calling which some reflexively resort to also. Everyone is on the same team, everyone should be able to express their thoughts without being blasted.

May I say a few words before saying good night? First, Chips is one of the most beautiful souls I have had the honor of being the precious space we call, Life. My heart is so full, Chips and TOD Family. You give so much, and I want to say, “Thank you from the depths of my heart.” My heart maybe in a medically weak state, but oh, the love that keeps it going when I am in the presence of Chips, and my TOD Family.

Our TOD Family gives me strength, hope, love, and a peacefulness that we can and will work daily to make this a better place for millions of people in this nation. And do not even think how beautiful this place is giving so much life and hope to millions of people all over this globe. Our POTUS has been given to us for a few moments in time, but it is surely a time that we all can take hold of and make it a beautiful lifetime that we will most sweetly hold dear and close to our hearts.

My heart is so full tonight and I wanted to share this with you all because tomorrow is not promised to me, but I take tender pleasure and care that I will see it and enjoy every moment of it. So, you all gave me a gift that I had been meditated upon for months and months. I saw other here so beautifully go to work at grassroot fundraising, and my heart moved with awe and gratitude. Then I thought, could I ever do that. So I prayed about it and asked for wisdom and guidance. Today was it for me, and You wonderful and dear people came to my side and helped me almost make it over the finish line (for now).

I thank each of you who so generously and quickly donated to our president’s cause for all of us. This is one day. Yes, the goal was only 250.00, but I always have believed for me, when I step out of the box, I will do it with hope and peace that it will create a spirit of awe and hope in my heart from others’ generousness. Well, to each of you who gave, thank you, thank, and more thank yous. I hope that I did everything correctly in sending out the thank yous.

My faith is stronger now that I know that I can do this also. I always thought this dream of mine would come true, so I spoke it to myself and let it go out into the space that we all take a step into each day. Our time, our talents, our money, our families, our faith in POB will bring us victory in Nov.2012. When we rally around “goodness, pure hearts, truthful tongues, and honorable deeds, we will bring victory that is sweet.

I have learned so much from all of you on this site who are a part of this great and very special TOD Family. You take pride in what you do for POB. You take joy in being respectful in how you treat each other, and you take sweet pride and joy in how you give thanks for our wonderful and dear Chipsticks. This is difficult work for Chips to take her time daily and feed us with the beauty of supporting such a great and humble man, our POTUS whom we love so dearly.

You taught me meta, cookemon, today. Just think of it. This 67 almost 68 year old senior still can see hope, still can brag, yes brag to my friends, family, neighbors, that we are going to bring victory because I see it in the young people. We the elder will help bring up the rear, if you allow us to.

So, be peaceful tonight, and celebrate that you gave me a gift to give to our POTUS from all of us. I think I like this, and maybe, just maybe I will try this again next month. Will you all keep an older senior in another race who loves you so much? Last I counted, we were at $214.00 as of 9:48 P.M. , Cali.time. That is great. So thank you so much, my TOD Family. Probably bad timing since I am on the West Coast and most people are probably asleep or heading to bed now. I will probably need to repost in the morning. I have not been on the blog since early this morning so may be repeating.

First off I want to thank those of you who helped me a few weeks ago when I was really upset over a catalog item in one of the gift catalogs I have bought items from many times. It was Potpouri. I gave the contact info and item number I was outraged over and told you what I said when I called them. I had postings of others that also called them when I asked for help to get the item removed from their catalog. It was a doll of Obama that farted. Anyhow, thanks for helping as another catalog came today and the item was no longer in it!!!! The items usually are in the catalog for 6 months to a year. I think our group effort paid off. I intend to order something from them tomorrow with mention of my appreciation for their removal of the offensive disrespectful item with hopes that they will be more careful in the future.

I saw an advertisement today while watching a movie on Lifetime that there is going to be a serious with Bristol Palin in it starting on June 19th. It seems that the ’08 election was certainly a springboard for earning money as celebrities from that family.

It sounds like your going through the same frustrations I go through every election cycle and when it comes to politics in general. I’m still honestly puzzled why these polls have it so close but I am at the same time reluctant to accept national polls at face value. Obama still has the edge against Romney and I strongly believe he’ll get re-elected.

I’ll repost my comment from the very bottom of the last thread if you all don’t mind:
    _________________

    Hi everyone,
I’ve have deliberately gone off the media grid this past 6 days, and boy has the whole world gone bonkers. Going through the last thread just made me so sad.

All I can say is, it is likely Pres. Obama is just exhausted. He’s been running on this hamster’s wheel since before he took office just trying to save this hell of a country from falling off the cliff. And he’s done this facing unprecedented headwinds from the Repugs and the whiners in his own party. At this point if I were him I have gotta be wondering why the hell am I all alone fighting this corporate tsunami when the American people themselves don’t care to fight themselves. For example the exit polling from Wisconsin annoyed me more than the actual vote tally. Why? What the heck were those Wisconsin union households thinking voting for the very guy going full throttle to take away their worker rights? And don’t get me started on the stupid argument that they were against the idea of “recalls” BS! This is a governor ACTIVELY taking away every damn rights people have had since the era of FDR, and he didn’t flinch that it was “improper” to gut people’s rights. So why are the voters being polite? It tells me that people in this country have turned helplessly nihilistic under the phantom assumption that acquiescing is the best way to make “peace” with the corporate overlords than to fight them. So this is the current shape of the rank and file American public. They don’t know what they want except some vague notion of “freedom”, “cut spending”, ‘get government out of our lives”. Well there you have it. Americans are gonna have to learn the lesson the hard way. SUFFER till they bleed.

Unfortunately many of us will be undeservedly caught up in the dystopian wave ready to descend on us whether now or in 2016 (if Pres. Obama prevails this time). the Democratic party is utterly decrepit. I wrote this way back in 2010 that PBO winning in 2008 delayed the day of reckoning for American liberals who ceded so much public persuasion real estate after the Vietnam war and sat back while the virulent movement right wing forces bought up every damns megaphone in sight. When PBO won there was no liberal movement in place to amplify his voice. HE CANNOT BE EXPECTED TO CARRY THE ENTIRE LOAD ALONE!!!!! So rightfully the guy is damn tired!! Saving a country from self-destructing all by himself. He’s human after all, not a superhuman. Romney can skate by because he has a whole armada of wingnuts carrying his cause from every conceivable direction, and amplified by a dutiful corporate media. What do Democrats do when they do get on the public airwaves? They selfishly undermine the President and shamelessly promote themselves, from Cory Booker to Bill Clinton. If I were Pres. Obama why would I continue to care about a fucking party and country that myopically fails to see the apocalypse that the repugs WILL certainly ring upon us. why?

Of course I don’t have the large heart & smarts that PBO has (which is why he IS President and I’m not). But let’s cut him some slack, it’s just the beginning of summer and we ourselves have got to want this real bad cuz it is we who WILL suffer not PBO if things don’t go our way in Nov. As for him the world will just snap him up pronto for bigger and more appreciated causes. He will do fine. We will not.

So the fight is entirely ours. He’ll fight as hard as he knows how but we can’t sit back and expect him to work miracles when many of our fellow Americans are spouting wingnut bullshit backed by gazillioin $$$. It’s on us.

A blind guy on a bar stool shouts to the bartender: “Wanna hear a blonde joke?”

In a hushed voice, the guy next to him says: “Before you tell that joke, you should know something. Our bartender is blonde, the bouncer is blonde. I’m a 6′ tall, 200 lb black belt. The guy sitting next to me is 6’2”, weighs 225, and he’s a rugby player. The fella to your right is 6’5” pushing 300 and he’s a wrestler. Each one of us is blonde. Think about it, mister. Do you still want to tell that joke?”

The blind guy says: “Not if I’m going to have to explain it five times.”

    Gooooooooood Morning everyone…..sipping tea….munching on corbread… 🙂

The Republican Party had increasingly found itself confined to white voters, (my emphasis..because of its policies) especially those lacking a college degree and rural whites who, as Obama awkwardly put it in 2008, tend to “cling to guns or religion.” Meanwhile, the Democrats had increased their standing among whites with graduate degrees, particularly the growing share of secular whites, and remained dominant among racial minorities. As a whole, Judis and Teixeira noted, the electorate was growing both somewhat better educated and dramatically less white, making every successive election less favorable for the GOP. And the trends were even more striking in some key swing states. Judis and Teixeira highlighted Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona, with skyrocketing Latino populations, and Virginia and North Carolina, with their influx of college-educated whites, as the most fertile grounds for the expanding Democratic base.
Obama’s victory carried out the blueprint.

Interesting read….this explains…the voter suppression….the attack on women….the attack on public unions (the last vestige of union strength in this country)….

RM asked a few weeks ago why is the REPubs (governors and all) going nutso….they are not going nutso…they are carring out a Repub/conservative agenda to get and maintain power….

What is the Democratic agenda….i think that Gov Patrick outlined it in his magnificent speech to the MA Dem convention….this includes the re-election of the President….but it goes beyond the President’s relection….this goes to heart and core of what we want for our nation….and indeed in the world…

GOV Patrick said that it is not enough to say what we are against/we have to say what we believe in and then Stand up for it….but as we also have seen in recent weeks..not every Democrat has read the script/indeed we go nutso when they go off message…

there has been alot of discussion about the MSM carrying the water for GOP/Conservative agenda….the question is how do we combat that…what do we do…

we continue to donate…we oontinue to register folks to vote…we become part of the twitter and FB army…..we continue to organize in our communities….our families…any where we can….because as the President has said….

WE ARE THE CHANGE THAT WE SEEK!…

    FORWARD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I AIN’T NO WAYS TIRED!

    Hi everyone,
I think the campaign knows exactly what it is doing….most of the people in this country are not paying attention to presidential politics or politics at all 5 months before the election. I completely understand and support the desire to get the messaging better, but Plouffe and Axelrod are pros and they will get this right! Keep the faith!!:)

you and I are in complete agreement, Chips, and there is no way I doubt your commitment to this President and his reelection.

I so agree with you, and also do like and admire Plouffe and Axelrod. I may disagree a tad though, in that I see a bigger problem with the silence and seeming diffidence of other Democrats. I would like to see them more vocal in their support and recognition of the many many accomplishments of President Obama, and his ongoing, continual efforts (with his amazing wife, the First Lady) on behalf of the 99%. After the disappointment in my state of Wisconsin, I even more strongly feel they need to speak up more forcefully. Thanks, Chips, I am off news for the time – but not you or BWD!
