Martin Sheen: Does President Bartlet hope for an Obama victory? “Very much. Don’t get me started on the Republicans,” Sheen growls. “They’re going to jump on all the things he didn’t do, but I think he’ll beat the hell out of them, frankly. When you put him and Romney together you’ll see the difference between a man living an honest life and a hustling politician.”

Thanks Jovie

Martin Sheen’s 2012 prediction: Obama by a landslide.

The “West Wing” star thinks the president will easily win another term, he told The Australian.

“Don’t get me started on the Republicans,” Sheen said. “They’re going to jump on all the things he didn’t do, but I think he’ll beat the hell out of them, frankly. Good-government advocates have sued the state of Florida, alleging its purge of non-citizens from voter rolls has swept up too many legally-registered African American and Latino voters and is undermining laws that ensure fair access to the ballot box.

The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and the local office of the international law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP filed a federal lawsuit in Tampa, claiming that the state Bureau of Elections is breaking the law in its ongoing purge, designed to scrub voter registration lists ahead of the state’s August congressional primary.

Florida officials, according to the suit, are using outdated information and a badly-flawed process to conduct the purge, according to the suit. And the procedure, the advocates contend, requires lawful citizens and already legally registered voters to prove their citizenship or lose their ability to vote.

“Florida is flouting federal laws designed to protect voters from precisely this kind of action,” Bob Kengle, co-director, Voting Rights Project, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, said in a statement issued Friday. “The right of every citizen to have their voice heard at the ballot box is being threatened. The Lawyers’ Committee will continue to tirelessly fight any effort to make full-fledged Americans second-class citizens.”

A group of coal companies owned by a massive India conglomerate ran illegal surface mines in eastern Kentucky that polluted waterways, according to lawsuit filed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA is alleging that mountaintop removal mines in three counties dumped pollutants into tributaries of the Levisa Fork River in 2005 and 2007.

The mines were run by Trinity Coal Corp. and its subsidiaries, based in Scott Depot, W.Va. Trinity has been owned since 2010 by Mumbai-based Essar Group, which owns coal reserves around the world and has business interests in 25 countries.

Its Essar Minerals division is named as a defendant in the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Pikeville federal court.

An email message sent to a spokesman for Essar in England was not returned on Thursday. A phone message left for Trinity Coal vice president Eric Calvert was also not returned.

The suit said Trinity’s companies began mining operations on a 682-acre site in Pike County in December 2005 without a Clean Water Act permit. Two years later, it began operations on a 768-acre site along the Magoffin and Floyd County line without the permit. The surface mining operations at those two sites have led to the dumping of earth, rock and spoil into more than two miles of streams, the suit said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin share the same goal – getting back to the White House next year.
Obama honored the Super Bowl champions on Friday, noting the similarities between the Giants’ 2008 championship and its most recent triumph.
“They ended up winning with a circus catch in the fourth quarter, MVP performance by Eli Manning … a come-from-behind win over the Patriots. So this is all starting to sound kind of like deja vu all over again,” Obama said.
In his speech, Coughlin injected some political references for a president in the heart of a re-election campaign, telling his team and guests on the South Lawn that he hoped coming back to the White House “was not a twice-in-a-lifetime experience.”
“We both have a goal to get back here next year. We have a lot of work to do,” Coughlin said to cheers and a pat on the back from Obama.
Coughlin noted that his team overcame a 7-7 start to win their final two regular-season games and win the NFC East. The Giants won four postseason games, capped by a 21-17 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots.

What ho TOD Peeps. Happy Friday to one and all; just “Livin’ for the Weekend” here in So Cal. (Any O’Jays fans in da house?) 😆

Anyhoo, as a HUUGE NY Giants fan, I actually took the time to watch the ceremony at the WH today and the Coach got in some zingers against Congress (how if they only worked together as a team, what could be accomplished–gee quelle surprise.. NOT!) that got a big “HO” and a beautiful smile from our illustrious Prez as he said that. The Coach also said something about crossing the finish line together that brought tears to my eyes. So I was glad to see Ms. Chips posted the clip of ceremony up top, so I could watch again. Here’s what Coach said the team’s final thought was the night before the Super Bowl:

“Maybe what matters most is not only how we reach the finish line and why, but WHO crosses the finish line with us. We cross that line together as one …… ”

So, our Prez gets this, a pro NFL team gets this, Mittens DOES NOT, never HAS, never WILL…. Obama/Biden 2012!

    Have a good weekend all….

    http://xpostfactoid.blogspot.com/2012/06/romney-rules.html

Weekly, Steve Benen tallies up the latest instances of Mitt’s Mendacity. At longer intervals, the Dish flags Romneys Big Lies, the core myths of his case against an imaginary Obama. I find the laser focus on lying a little narrow: the modes of Mitt’s deception are manifold. As a private equity chief, Romney was a master of playing a rigged game, or of himself rigging games in his firm’s favor; he has carried that skill to the political arena. He would have the election played by Romney Rules, compiled below.

Well said, Vicki! I wish Teachers, cops, firefighters and all public employees would launch a boycott of all the companies supporting Mitt Romney. For me I am now in my first year of making sure that I would not buy any paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, paper napkins, and paper plates) that are in any way connected with the Koch industries. I know my boycott is a drop in the bucket , but it makes me feel good that not a single penny of my hard earned money goes to these multi-billionaires who are determined to destroy our democracy. I am sure if public employees, their families and their supporters, boycotted, for example, all the paper products by the Koch Industries, the Kochs might have to think twice about what they are doing. If not, at least our money would no longer be used against us.

About that list of Koch products. When it first started to circulate I took a look at it and was all ready to boycott. But what I found out was there was nothing on the list that I hadn’t already decided was crap. So I didn’t even have to give anything up!

Speaking of Police Unions and this is OT from willard..but, I just got this link from PoliticusUSA about the Police Union in Florida having left the goparty last year.

“Rick Scott’s Voter Purge Powers Obama to the Lead in Florida”
      http://www.politicususa.com/rick-scott-obama-voter-purge.html

” According to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, what pushed the police association over the edge was Scott’s union due deductions bill, which is a union busting measure in the finest Scott Walker tradition. The Florida measure would allow government agencies to collect union dues if the union is engaged in political activities.

They are so outraged that on July 16, the union will be holding a “Party to Leave The Party” event.

      Check out the invitations,.”

NEW YORK — People who were stricken with cancer after being exposed to the toxic ash that exploded over Manhattan when the World Trade Center collapsed would qualify for free treatment of the disease and potentially hefty compensation payments under a rule proposed Friday by federal health officials.

After months of study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health said in an administrative filing that it favored a major expansion of an existing $4.3 billion 9/11 health program to include people with 50 types of cancer, covering 14 broad categories of the disease.

People with any of the cancers on the list could qualify for treatments and payments as long as they and their doctors make a plausible case that the disease was connected to the caustic dust.

The decision followed years of emotional lobbying by construction workers, firefighters, police officers, office cleaners, and many other people who fell ill in the decade after the terror attack, and were sure it had something to do with the many days they spent toiling in the gray soot.

according to mitt the bullying serial liar in his Iowa speech 6/8/12, we do not need any more police, firefighters or teachers …… we need to help the American people (apparently you and other public servants are not real Americans.

Mitt Romney: We don’t need more cops, firefighters or teachers

        By Greg Sargent

        ———————————-

This time, however, Romney deserves points for honesty: He has forthrightly declared that the class of government workers holding back other Americans does include cops, firefighters and teachers. And in so doing, he has singlehandedly reframed the debate from one over despised government bureaucrats to one over whether we should hire more cops, firefighters and teachers to get the economy going. This is a debate the White House will be happy to have.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign is now circulating video:

        The Obama campaign responds:

In Iowa today, Mitt Romney shockingly promised to cut jobs for firefighters, police, and teachers if elected. As President Obama urges Congress to pass his plan to put cops, firefighters, teachers, and construction workers back to work — after they left as many as 1 million jobs from his plan on the table — Mitt Romney has decided we need less jobs for middle class Americans, not more. That’s the message he received this week.

    http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2012/06/20126915116142590.html

Police have arrested 190 people in a major US crackdown on child pornography, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) say.

Federal agents said on Friday that the month-long ‘Operation Orion’ also resulted in identifying and rescuing 18 children.

In a statement, ICE said most of the arrests during Operation Orion through the month of May took place in the US, but suspects were also picked up in Argentina, Britain, the Philippines and Spain.

“Many of the child exploitation cases under Operation Orion began with a child or teen chatting with someone he or she met online,” said ICE Director John Morton.

“Let this operation be a warning to anyone who would think they can use the Internet to exploit children: we are out there looking for you, we will find you, and you will be prosecuted.”

Operation Orion targeted individuals “who possessed, received, transported, distributed, advertised or produced images or videos of child pornography,” the ICE statement said.

Among those arrested was a 35-year-old individual in Louisiana suspected of using the seven-year-old he babysat to make child pornography, and a 35-year-old in Oklahoma who offered money for sex to a 14-year-old victim he met on a social networking site.

    The big-lie coup d’etat
The super-rich and privileged have been fabricating truth in order to entrench it in the American psyche.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist (you can’t have served in Washington and seriously believe more than two people can hold on to a big story without it leaking), but I fear that at least since 2010 we’ve been witnessing a quiet, slow-motion coup d’etat whose purpose is to repeal every bit of progressive legislation since the New Deal and entrench the privileged positions of the wealthy and powerful – who haven’t been as wealthy or as powerful since the Gilded Age of the late 19th century.

Its techique is to inundate the United States with a few big lies, told over and over (the debt is Obama’s fault and it’s out of control; corporations and the very rich are the “job creators” that need tax cuts; government is the enemy, and its regulations are strangling the private sector; unions are bad; and so on), and tell them so often they’re taken as fact.

Then having convinced enough Americans that these lies are true, take over the White House, Congress, and remaining states that haven’t yet succumbed to the regressive right (witness Tuesday’s recall election in Wisconsin).

I desperately hope I’m wrong, but all the growing evidence suggests I may be right.

      What did Maher say?

      • 132 Walking_on_ Sunshine
        June 8, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Said they should stop camping out and playing cum-ba-ya in the park and start occupying the voting booth. Said they should do what the tea party did. Start getting candidates elected into office. Register voting and be involved in the process. Said they needed to be for the Democrats what the tea party is for the Republicans. He said they should occupy congress and give the President someone to point to and say to Boehner “Gee, I’d love to extend the Bush tax cuts but I have to deal with these crazy f-ers!”

“register voters” is what I meant to type. I know he’s had his bad moments but at least he dug in his pocket and gave a million bucks. Just my guess but I think maybe the Wisconsin thing has been a wake up for some of those who think they can whine about the President and still get their way. Hoping some of them realize that we have to be a team.

there was a tweet circulating a few months ago that really speaks to this. something like, ‘there’s nothing you’re whining about that would be improved by voting for a republican.’ adding to that, there’s nothing about not voting that is going to get you what you want either. unless what you want, is just to whine.

I am glad Bill Maher is coming back to reality. Change does not come through “mike checks.” Change comes as a result of political participation in the electoral process. That’s why many in 60’s Civil Rights Movement risked their lives in order to secure the right to vote.

Kristol wrote that Romney could lose most of that crucial 40 percent if he “fails to present a compelling alternative. … This is a winnable election for Mitt Romney. But he can’t win simply by asserting that things are worse than they’ve ever been.”

The fact is that Romney doesn’t have a compelling alternative. During the primaries, he was for Republican Paul Ryan’s economic plan, endorsed by the Republican House, which would cut trillions in federal spending over the next decade, dismantle Medicare and continue low taxes for the affluent. He’s still for it, a top campaign aide said over the weekend. But Ryan doesn’t seem to be his constant sidekick as he was just a few months ago. Romney has clearly sidelined Ryan and his controversial budget plan in this new phase of his campaign, leaving the candidate, once again, without much of a program.

The right doesn’t trust Romney. Nor will the center, so vital to his campaign. That’s because, by Election Day, Americans will still have no idea where he would take them. Hopefully, they will see him for what he is—a hollow man.

      • 144 hopefruit2
        June 8, 2012 at 11:50 pm

The pollsters keep saying that the polls are very close or tied. But if Romney is trailing PBO among women by 20 pts, and leading PBO among men by 5 pts, then the polls cannot be statistically tied because the proportion of men and women registered/likely voters are roughly 50-50. For the polls to be tied, he would have to lead PBO among men by approx the same amount that he is trailing PBO among women.

  42. June 8, 2012 at 11:37 pm

I wonder if PBO already has the dope on who leaked the classified information on Iran. He sort of had that look on his face as he talked about “consequences.” Holder’s announcement was incredibly timely. We’ll see……

    Sorry..I laughed hard. 🙂 🙂 http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/06/08/pranksters-jiggly-puff-weedlord-bonerhitler-sign-anti-obamacare-petition/

When the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) set about thinking how to engage the Internet in new and unique ways, it probably did not occur to them that sometimes, the Internet tends to engage you right back.

That misunderstanding apparently led to an NRCC petition drive this week seeking to trump up the number of people who want to see “Obamacare” repealed. Unfortunately for them, it all went horribly, hilariously awry on Thursday night after they hooked an office printer up to the Twitter hashtag #IWantRepeal, then turned on a live video stream.

It was not long before NRCC staff completely lost control and were forced to pull the plug.

In almost no time at all, their printer was spitting out pages of petitions signed by “Weedlord Bonerhitler,” “Jiggly Puff,” “Boner Junkmonkey,” “Pointless Empty Gesture,” “Turd Sniffer,” “Like 20 more boners” and “HelpI’mStuckInThisPrinter,” among many, many others. Screen shots of this Twitter debacle and links to the live video began circulating almost immediately.

dotster3 said: PBO is under a microscope. Every pore, every hair follicle

This is so true. I have never seen any politician’s every move scrutinized like President Obama. This is how the media continually feeds the beast. When one silly manufactured controversy ends there must be another one waiting in the wings. They are too lazy to do their home work and report the facts. It’s so much easier to be sheep and just report on the latest shiny object. It’s infuriating. I am so embarrassed that we have a media that produces nothing but tabloid trash. We deserve better.

Just think of what happened yesterday. President Obama has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of the American people (even those who did not vote for him.). He holds a press conference to update the American people on the current state of the economy and what needs to be done NOW. He calls on congress to just do their job. He calls out the Republican Party for their obstruction. He makes it pain what is needed NOW. In response to a question he said that compared to the state and local government, the private sector is doing fine. Profits are high and they are hiring. WTF is so controversial about that? it’s the truth. Everybody knows that.

Unfortunately, this statement satisfied what the media was really hoping for. A shiny new soundbite to distract attention from the fact that since the Republican Party took the majority in the House of Representatives THEY HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT JOB CREATION. The tragedy is that if the media had been doing their job all along, the American would know that it is the Republican Party sabotaging the economy. The ‘doing fine’ comment was cover for the media and the GOP. No need to talk about the substance of what President Obama had so say, we got us a distraction now. Let’s run with that. Pathetic. (Sorry for the rant, I’m a bit worked up this morning.)

      • June 9, 2012 at 7:58 am

In knowing this, the President should just keep his talking points, like the GOP does.
Stay away from the rabid press and use controlled messaging.

    Gooooooooood Morning everyone….

i see the Press is still on the case for the Republicans…

The Romney campaign mimics the President in every way that it can….be it by dress…fundraiser….showing up at rallies that the President is hosting….

the Romeny campaign and his surrogates run on lies and distortions sowing confusion and mistrust…these are not misspeaks it is a strategy that if you tell a lie often enough folks start believing it…

today the press has decided to distort comments of the President instead of holding the GOP Congress accountable for not passing the President’s Jobs bill…

that was the lead story on Alec Twitts program this morning….the press is creating a controversy following the lead of the Romney/GOP instead of asking them why are they blocking the JOBs bill…

i feel that we the footsoldiers are more important than ever to get the truth out….and when i see this…it only encourages me to give money to the campaign..sign up more people to vote….it also lets me know that the President is on point/why else would there be such rush to distort his message….

    FORWARD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
