OK, TOD family, anyone financially literate. When they say that JP Morgan “lost” billions here’s what I want to know. Into whose pockets did that money find its way. It isn’t truly lost – it got paid for something to someone…who benefited? Has anyone seen this covered? THX!

      May 18, 2012 at 7:40 pm

This is a good question. I heard a snippet of Mitt complaining yesterday that the taxpayers didn’t lose anything. But you’re absolutely right. This money is guaranteed by the Federal govt, isn’t it? Those people who hedged won on the losses of someone else. It would be interesting to see who the winners were, and if they were Americans or foreign entities.

      • May 18, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Right, what exactly did JPMorgan buy to “hedge” their loan portfolio? $3 billion is a lot of money to put out into the global economy. Where did it end up?

Why am I laughing out loud? I’ve been looking for the email of a journalist who has covered the loss to pose the question, but haven’t found anyone so far. I’ll try looking for their Twitter accounts, too.

These direvatives is just pure and simple gambling. They were probably betting against or for something that did not happen and therefore lost billions. If they are saying $2 – 3 Billion it’s probably a lot more than that. We won’t know exactly for a few months but it will come out either in the hears or when they can cover their bet.

          • May 18, 2012 at 7:58 pm

Because the money went somewhere and I think it would be telling to know where it went. Just tweeted this: @NelsonSchwartz Can you discover where the $3 billion was invested. The money flowed from JP Morgan to whom/what? It isn’t really lost.

I just read that Tim Johnson, who called the hearings on the Senate Banking committee….guess who’s his largest contributor??? WIld guess! JPMorgan Chase.

        • May 18, 2012 at 7:59 pm

They bet on insurance on Securities.
          The bet went sour…
They bet like this all the time, they lost up to 5 billion but made 100 billion.
So, they are still way ahead on derivatives.

    • 26 desertflower
      May 18, 2012 at 7:57 pm

I thought the investors lost their money…I could be wrong, so many twists, turns and spin. theo has a good point though…the FDIC insures the losses…that would be the taxpayers? I’ll see what I can find….

      • May 18, 2012 at 8:01 pm

Right, the bank invested (paid money to) some entities that received the money. The $3 billion isn’t lost, it just isn’t working for JP Morgan any more….but it is available to someone/some entities… U.S., foreign, corporations where it is getting concentrated at the top. It would be so interesting to know. (I say with slight sarcasm)

        • 28 desertflower
          May 18, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I think the entire revealing point of this entire debacle,is that the banks feel, like they can play by different rules. These derivatives are the very exotic investment vehicle that nearly bought the world economy to it’s knees not too many years ago! Did we “forget already”???? The fact that Dimon approved these himself, just goes to show that they need regulations more than ever, and they have absolutely NO QUALMS with tanking the economy again….they make the rules, or at least only follow the ones THEY like! The arrogance is stunning.

          • 29 theo67
            May 18, 2012 at 8:26 pm

The other sad fact is that Dimon stands by this gambling and sees nothing wrong with flushing the $3B out of his bank’s coffers. And that the guy challenging President Obama for the presidency says “this is how America works”. Very scary.

I just got back from Philadelphia, where I watched my second child graduate with a BFA in Musical Theater! It was a wonderful graduation ceremony and the commencement speaker was Neil Gaiman (author of the Coraline books, and others). He was fantastic. I am so tired, but am feeling out of it because I have missed the news of the past 3 days. What did I miss folks? Can anyone tell me in a nutshell?

No. My #1 is a son, #2&3 are girls. I just wanted boys, but I discovered having 2 girls is a LOT of fun. All three of them are strong, opinionated, principled, intelligent young people: 24, 22, & almost 20. I feel old 😀

a BFA in what?? My son got a BA in Theater Arts from a liberal arts college and is pursuing a career in directing live theater. He’s doing pretty well for his age. It’s fun watching him grow as an artist.

                  May 19, 2012 at 8:04 am

A BFA in music composition, if you can believe it! I can’t. Not having an ounce of music ability and being a very practical person, it makes no (economic) sense to me. However, I’ve tried really hard to keep that opinion to myself, only sharing it with adults. Never let it be said I rained on his parade. His goal has always been, even in junior school, to become a ‘well-known’ composer, note he’s never said ‘famous’, just well-known. 😉

Why is msnbc resurrecting Armstrong Williams on every program? ( he just now said that Romney is such a gentleman) And I wish that msnbc would not continue to play into the Rev. Wright story—–now they have Williams and Dyson on to prolong the story, giving it undue attention, just as the Romney forces would have hoped. Drop it.

They not only didn’t want to arm them, but they don’t want to care for them when they come home, they didn’t want to buy body armor, they only invoke veterans when they want people to think they give a shit….and they don’t. They have been thrown under the bus countless times. But hey, they’re the patriotic Americans, right?

So, who is going to pay for the war with Iran? How money spent on invading other country that have done nothing against the United States does not count for people who are so alarmed about the defats and debt? How come Republicans never talk about a trillion dollars spent on the Iraq war? Are Iraqis more important than the ordinary Americans, including those who rely on food stamps and unemployment composition during one of the severest economic crisis since the Great Depression? Mitt Romney paid less than 15% income tax in 2010. Cam Mitt specifically point to the jobs he created in 2010 as a result of him paying less than 15% of his income? Obviously, the so called mainstream media would never ask such questions. The so called media would rather focus on trivia instead of asking real questions to theTea bag Republicans who control the House of Representatives.

Obama ended April with combined cash stockpiles of $144.3 million from his campaign, the Democratic National Committee and their joint fundraising operation, according to campaign finance reports released Friday. That’s more than twice the $61.4 million Romney and the RNC reported having in the bank at the end of last month.

More that twice as much as Romney/RNC.

O.M.G., I’m getting so excited about the odometer turning 10 MILLION tonight for sure. I know I won’t be awake to see it……so here’s my two cents.

CONGRATULATIONS Chipsticks! It couldn’t happen to a better blogger – bar NONE. I know, because I’ve checked out others and found them WANTING. I’ve even seen some blogs who copy new TOD threads, minutes after Chipsticks puts it up. So Chipsticks you stand proudly head and shoulders above the rest.

Well done Chipsticks, Well done. You are loved and respected by us here at TOD. 🙂 I personally would be lost and ignorant without YOU.

The Ten Million Click Woman. That’s our Chips. This is so exciting. Sounds like there will be lots of champagne flowing tonight. Maybe there will be mimosas for breakfast. Yummy…

Less than 5,000 hits to go! Will it be tonight or tomorrow? My cheesy puffs are actually quite delicious! Matched with wasabi nori from Trader Joe’s, salad, and I’m feasting! No wine though.

Maybe if anyone from the Republican Party had any sense at all President Obama would have been more than happy to invite them up to Camp David to sit at the table with the grownups.

Welcome in from lurkerdom. Grab a seat and enjoy our “fine” company. There are some unruly folks here whose names I’ll not mention, but on the balance we are very nice people. Cheers!! 😆 😆
