OK, TOD family, anyone financially literate. When they say that JP Morgan “lost” billions here’s what I want to know. Into whose pockets did that money find its way. It isn’t truly lost – it got paid for something to someone…who benefited? Has anyone seen this covered? THX!
This is a good question. I heard a snippet of Mitt complaining yesterday that the taxpayers didn’t lose anything. But you’re absolutely right. This money is guaranteed by the Federal govt, isn’t it? Those people who hedged won on the losses of someone else. It would be interesting to see who the winners were, and if they were Americans or foreign entities.
Right, what exactly did JPMorgan buy to “hedge” their loan portfolio? $3 billion is a lot of money to put out into the global economy. Where did it end up?
Why am I laughing out loud? I’ve been looking for the email of a journalist who has covered the loss to pose the question, but haven’t found anyone so far. I’ll try looking for their Twitter accounts, too.
These direvatives is just pure and simple gambling. They were probably betting against or for something that did not happen and therefore lost billions. If they are saying $2 – 3 Billion it’s probably a lot more than that. We won’t know exactly for a few months but it will come out either in the hears or when they can cover their bet.
THX 0388jojothecat
Because the money went somewhere and I think it would be telling to know where it went. Just tweeted this: @NelsonSchwartz Can you discover where the $3 billion was invested. The money flowed from JP Morgan to whom/what? It isn’t really lost.
I just read that Tim Johnson, who called the hearings on the Senate Banking committee….guess who’s his largest contributor??? WIld guess! JPMorgan Chase.
They bet on insurance on Securities.
The bet went sour…
They bet like this all the time, they lost up to 5 billion but made 100 billion.
So, they are still way ahead on derivatives.
I thought the investors lost their money…I could be wrong, so many twists, turns and spin. theo has a good point though…the FDIC insures the losses…that would be the taxpayers? I’ll see what I can find….
Right, the bank invested (paid money to) some entities that received the money. The $3 billion isn’t lost, it just isn’t working for JP Morgan any more….but it is available to someone/some entities… U.S., foreign, corporations where it is getting concentrated at the top. It would be so interesting to know. (I say with slight sarcasm)
I think the entire revealing point of this entire debacle,is that the banks feel, like they can play by different rules. These derivatives are the very exotic investment vehicle that nearly bought the world economy to it’s knees not too many years ago! Did we “forget already”???? The fact that Dimon approved these himself, just goes to show that they need regulations more than ever, and they have absolutely NO QUALMS with tanking the economy again….they make the rules, or at least only follow the ones THEY like! The arrogance is stunning.
The other sad fact is that Dimon stands by this gambling and sees nothing wrong with flushing the $3B out of his bank’s coffers. And that the guy challenging President Obama for the presidency says “this is how America works”. Very scary.
JO’B, in my case wouldn’t mind so much if WP would only time its attack on me for those many other moments when I’m not racing to the front of the line!!! 😡
Obviously the agenda of the #GOPlutocracy is not jobs, growth, ROI, national security, human rights, and most certainly it’s not about the “Promise of America” ….
I just got back from Philadelphia, where I watched my second child graduate with a BFA in Musical Theater! It was a wonderful graduation ceremony and the commencement speaker was Neil Gaiman (author of the Coraline books, and others). He was fantastic. I am so tired, but am feeling out of it because I have missed the news of the past 3 days. What did I miss folks? Can anyone tell me in a nutshell?
1. More foolishness in the media – stemming from FAILED attempts by Romney camp to resuscitate the Rev Wright story.
2. Our illustrious President hard at work on behalf of the american people.
Tally’s birthday was yesterday, amk wants gin in the morning…and Chips says he’s a feisty today, thanked the veterans here, PBO is smart and fabulous, the banks think they don’t have to play by the rules (yet again) and Arizona has a full blown case of batshit crazy! Did I miss anything?
Oh, also Prettyfoot has a birthday tomorrow, Yardarm has gone on a 2-4 day safari, and BWD’s “The Only Adult in the Room’ blog is up and running as an information site. See the link over on the right, near the top.
And Congrats Mother of the BFA, and the B of FA herself! 😆
Happy Belated birthday Tally. Hope it was a wonderful day, and hope you have a great year in which we will celebrate with much champagne the re-election of President Barack Obama!
Thanks to all of you for your most excellent and funny updates, and your congrats. Yes, we really are happy 2nd child is through, and now one left to go who is going to school in ARIZONA. I must tell you, on the day PBO endorsed gay marriage, she texted me that she wanted to vote because PBO is the “only candidate who has a real plan for the future and has a real concern for the American people”! We are going to register her to vote this summer so she can vote absentee in California. So glad!
No. My #1 is a son, #2&3 are girls. I just wanted boys, but I discovered having 2 girls is a LOT of fun. All three of them are strong, opinionated, principled, intelligent young people: 24, 22, & almost 20. I feel old 😀
Lucky you! 😆 Me, I dreamed of girls with beautiful names to match and ended up with one boy (who happens to be currently pursuing a BFA ) ‘I feel old’ is a favourite line of mine that happens to be true in my case! 😉
a BFA in what?? My son got a BA in Theater Arts from a liberal arts college and is pursuing a career in directing live theater. He’s doing pretty well for his age. It’s fun watching him grow as an artist.
A BFA in music composition, if you can believe it! I can’t. Not having an ounce of music ability and being a very practical person, it makes no (economic) sense to me. However, I’ve tried really hard to keep that opinion to myself, only sharing it with adults. Never let it be said I rained on his parade. His goal has always been, even in junior school, to become a ‘well-known’ composer, note he’s never said ‘famous’, just well-known. 😉
I understand what you mean as my husband and I have no theater in our background, yet here we have 2 theater kids, not one but 2!! One in directing, one in musical theater. Sigh. We also have not rained on their parade.
Thank you nathkatun7. It was a real feeling of joy and accomplishment on her part, and for my husband and I, it felt like a launching and a letting go.
Betsy, congratulations. Nothing beats that feeling of pride when your child graduates from college. Time to celebrate and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
Were those the fave brown pants again? I think they got another wearing. President Obama is priceless in all ways. I like the look of Camp David. Reminds me of my old girl scout camp at Clear Lake, Iowa. It was named Camp Gaywood back in the day when gay just meant jolly, later changed to Camp Happywood, or something. likely under pressure.
Why is msnbc resurrecting Armstrong Williams on every program? ( he just now said that Romney is such a gentleman) And I wish that msnbc would not continue to play into the Rev. Wright story—–now they have Williams and Dyson on to prolong the story, giving it undue attention, just as the Romney forces would have hoped. Drop it.
I agree theo67. This Rickett’s proposal is accomplishing just what they wanted. They are playing right into the right wing hands. I am turning this s*** off and start watching tv next week when hopefully this is gone.
The evidence backs up your claim. Look at how they were all draft dodgers, and then couldn’t be bothered to fight to fully arm the troops who were in harm’s way.
They not only didn’t want to arm them, but they don’t want to care for them when they come home, they didn’t want to buy body armor, they only invoke veterans when they want people to think they give a shit….and they don’t. They have been thrown under the bus countless times. But hey, they’re the patriotic Americans, right?
df, I hope you get an opportunity to vote for President Obama in Arizona. See your SoS is threatening to keep him off the ballot. Batshit crazy indeed.
OH!!! I WILL VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA OR SUE THIS FUCKING STATE MYSELF! There is the tiny matter of the Full Faith and Credit clause of the US Constitution ( you know, the one they say they dearly love…except when they don’t!) The state of Hawaii has already verified this BC…there is nothing more that stupid shit SOS has to say about this! I need to find a way out of this place…REALLY soon!!
So, who is going to pay for the war with Iran? How money spent on invading other country that have done nothing against the United States does not count for people who are so alarmed about the defats and debt? How come Republicans never talk about a trillion dollars spent on the Iraq war? Are Iraqis more important than the ordinary Americans, including those who rely on food stamps and unemployment composition during one of the severest economic crisis since the Great Depression? Mitt Romney paid less than 15% income tax in 2010. Cam Mitt specifically point to the jobs he created in 2010 as a result of him paying less than 15% of his income? Obviously, the so called mainstream media would never ask such questions. The so called media would rather focus on trivia instead of asking real questions to theTea bag Republicans who control the House of Representatives.
Hi Everyone:
Just catching up from about two days ago.
Thank you Chips for keeping us up to date with all events PBO and thanks to the TOD family for all updates and articles which we would not normally get or hear from the MSM.
Happy belated birthday to Tally . . . and LL, following you on Twitter!
Obama ended April with combined cash stockpiles of $144.3 million from his campaign, the Democratic National Committee and their joint fundraising operation, according to campaign finance reports released Friday. That’s more than twice the $61.4 million Romney and the RNC reported having in the bank at the end of last month.
You chilling the champagne (is champagne even served chilled, or it is at room temperature). Dudette? Alcohol and I just don’t mesh so I’m never sure what is what. I know with so many of you party animals around, the music will be taken care of. .I’ll go gather the party hats.
I have 2 bottles of champagne in the fridge:) You can bet we’ll have PLENTY of good party tunes though…you don’t need to drink to have a good time:) Chilled:)
Dudette, I seem to remember you playing an integral part in TOD’s last all-night musicfest, you party animal, you! I also remember each time I awakened during the night you or Df, or Ison – whom I haven’t seen for a couple of days now, and a couple others were dancing the night away. [I suspect Ison is out doing some boots on the ground work.]
Good Night & sweet dreams, TODville! Try not to drink too much as your designated driver is now unavailable. I’m falling asleep here so I’ll catch up tomorrow. VC
btw. A special ‘Good Night’ to HZ, a4Alice & Isonprize whom I personally haven’t seen in days.
Thank you! Normally, I just cut and paste …took me forever how to even figure THAT out…I could never embed…then I got freakishly lucky…not like I knew what I was doing, it just always worked:)
Oh, let’s get this party started, so we’ll be rockin’ it good when the big number rolls over. 🙂
This one goes out to Mama Chips, who’s bustin’ into NEW TERRITORY tonight. Git it, Girl!!
I gotta go get something to eat before I faint. Will check in on the party in a bit.
🙂 Look at you! You know, this one’s going to put the last one to shame…we will crush them! The people will speak again, in case they didn’t hear us the FIRST TIME!
O.M.G., I’m getting so excited about the odometer turning 10 MILLION tonight for sure. I know I won’t be awake to see it……so here’s my two cents.
CONGRATULATIONS Chipsticks! It couldn’t happen to a better blogger – bar NONE. I know, because I’ve checked out others and found them WANTING. I’ve even seen some blogs who copy new TOD threads, minutes after Chipsticks puts it up. So Chipsticks you stand proudly head and shoulders above the rest.
Well done Chipsticks, Well done. You are loved and respected by us here at TOD. 🙂 I personally would be lost and ignorant without YOU.
The Ten Million Click Woman. That’s our Chips. This is so exciting. Sounds like there will be lots of champagne flowing tonight. Maybe there will be mimosas for breakfast. Yummy…
Less than 5,000 hits to go! Will it be tonight or tomorrow? My cheesy puffs are actually quite delicious! Matched with wasabi nori from Trader Joe’s, salad, and I’m feasting! No wine though.
Maybe if anyone from the Republican Party had any sense at all President Obama would have been more than happy to invite them up to Camp David to sit at the table with the grownups.
Welcome in from lurkerdom. Grab a seat and enjoy our “fine” company. There are some unruly folks here whose names I’ll not mention, but on the balance we are very nice people. Cheers!! 😆 😆
First?
Yes, Julie!
Yes. Congrats Julie.
Well done, Julie!
Way to go Julie!
Congrats Julie.
too late.
Never too late!
Not here
Meaning I am not supposed to be here, just peeking in! Going home soon!
I was wondering what that meant! 🙂
I didn’t see a thing!
Reminds me of when I was back in school in Chapel Hill NC. There was this bar with a great name: “He’s Not Here” 🙂

Indeed, Theo! Gambling is now equivalent to the so called “free enterprise capitalism. Adam Smith must be turning in his grave!
Where is my President?!?!?
Is wordpress acting weirdo again?
Yep! It made me so mad just now, telling me I had to sign in again, etc. at just the wrong moment!
I think WordPress takes turns, messing with our minds. I was its target for a while, now it may be others. Sorry if it’s you!
JO’B, in my case wouldn’t mind so much if WP would only time its attack on me for those many other moments when I’m not racing to the front of the line!!! 😡

Now, if Merkel would stop being such a Tea Bagget and stop being so damn stubborn about Greece…
She didn’t look very friendly in her greeting w/PBO.
While we wait, here’s the official Welcome to Chicago, NATO (video – 9 mins 40 secs)
There he is!!
Whitehouse.gov feed is on…

missed it 😦
Okay well that was quick~
Camp David looks so beautiful and peaceful. Lovely.
Welp, that was it. Short and sweet. Shake hands (or kiss), smile for the cameras and walk inside.
7,142 to go
These events are a lot more interesting with Michelle present. I love how she interacts with people.
FLOTUS makes everything more interesting and lively. Love my FLOTUS.
President Obama holds my interest.
Mine too. 😉
FLOTUS mines.
Don’t get me wrong, I like my POTUS also, but beside every great man, is a great woman.
Let me correct myself, I like POTUS too, he’s not my POTUS.
Obviously the agenda of the #GOPlutocracy is not jobs, growth, ROI, national security, human rights, and most certainly it’s not about the “Promise of America” ….

In a nutshell:
Osama Bin Laden is Dead
GM is Alive
Mitt Romney is a souless wanker
Barack Obama continues to prove he’s the only man for the job
Okay, my work here is done. See you all later! 🙂
FORWARD!!
Congrats on getting the baby through college. Quite an achievement for you and the kid. Well done!!
Congratulations on your daughter’s graduation, Betsy!

She’s at UofA, and is trying to bring more students on board.
Betsy, congratulations. Nothing beats that feeling of pride when your child graduates from college. Time to celebrate and pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
You are so right. Two down, one to go, and she’s a junior in Sept. Yeah!!! 😀

Wright story—–now they have Williams and Dyson on to prolong the story, giving it undue attention, just as the Romney forces would have hoped. Drop it.
Somebody should tweet the hosts to cut that crap. They’re doing the work of the Ricketts Kkklan without them even having to pay for the ad time.
I never could stand that Armstrong guy, I don’t know where Ed dug him up from.
His name is Armstrong Williams and his claim to fame is that as a radio talk show host he was paid by the Bush administration to carry their water.
Rev Wright is probably getting more play by MSNBC and so-called Democrats than you’d probably find on Fox “News”.
I agree theo67. This Rickett’s proposal is accomplishing just what they wanted. They are playing right into the right wing hands. I am turning this s*** off and start watching tv next week when hopefully this is gone.
Corrupt in every way.

df, I hope you get an opportunity to vote for President Obama in Arizona. See your SoS is threatening to keep him off the ballot. Batshit crazy indeed.
Is that even legal?
No, but that won’t stop them from trying. Stupid is as stupid does.
DF, they will try but they won’t succeed. There are armies of legal teams that will descend on Arizona and the president will be on the ballot.
Of course he will. These people are nothing but fools. I’m not worried.
OH!!! I WILL VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA OR SUE THIS FUCKING STATE MYSELF! There is the tiny matter of the Full Faith and Credit clause of the US Constitution ( you know, the one they say they dearly love…except when they don’t!) Coming up on 10 MILLION HITS in just a few minutes!!!
OMG, Chips!! 😯
You chilling the champagne (is champagne even served chilled, or it is at room temperature). Dudette? Alcohol and I just don’t mesh so I’m never sure what is what. I know with so many of you party animals around, the music will be taken care of. .I’ll go gather the party hats.
Woot! Woot! 10 million coming right up!
Yaaaaay, Chips Chica! 😆 😆 😆
I have 2 bottles of champagne in the fridge:) You can bet we’ll have PLENTY of good party tunes though…you don’t need to drink to have a good time:) Chilled:)
How about a little something to get the smooth groove going while we wait for the numbers to tick by?

Dudette, I seem to remember you playing an integral part in TOD’s last all-night musicfest, you party animal, you! I also remember each time I awakened during the night you or Df, or Ison – whom I haven’t seen for a couple of days now, and a couple others were dancing the night away. [I suspect Ison is out doing some boots on the ground work.]
Who me? Couldn’tna been me. I’m a meek, demure homebody. No party animal here — just a humble little lady who likes a sip of tea every now and then.
😎
Sure. I believe you. Must have been your twin, or your cousin who looks, and dances, so much like you.. 😉
Yeh, I have some cousins who might be referred to as “bad girls”
Oh wait a minute, I think someone wrote a song about them:
:)True! All true….. I admit to the party animal…we had so much fun that night:) Ran poor yardarm off because he said we were all hens or something:)
He was right, but the TOD air was filled with camaraderie and lots of magic. The memory of it makes me smile. G’Night, Df.
missed it.
10,000,000th?
Close… very close
Yeah!
Probably about an hour.
I found out Miss Ann donated 75 large to her Husbands victory fund.

Right here with you! I may have to step out for a little bit….store run…but I WILL be back:) mange!
Congratulations on the 10 millionth hit, Chips!
It’s just an amazing number! And it’s also a good time to say hello to all of the “lurkers” who helped get those hits!
Congrats, Chips!
Thank you Jacqueline, it’s been a trip!
Must be a little overwhelming, even for you, Chips!
I love Sting, too:) Awesome pair!
Sting gives me FEEEVAH!!! I lubs him deeply!
I get hot flashes…my husband bought me the complete set of Sting for Christmas…yum. I’ll leave it there:)
One for the road… this goes out to all the haters and trolls who try to come on here and throw shade on our President!
Mama Chips sends her regards suckas!!!! You CANNOT defeat us…
🙂 Look at you! You know, this one’s going to put the last one to shame…we will crush them! The people will speak again, in case they didn’t hear us the FIRST TIME!
A high five, a pound and a left-cheek booty bump on that one! Unh, unh… UNH!!!
It’s amazing that their is Zero news being leaked, from this meeting.
I keep waiting for some News, preferably hood news. LOL!
LOL! Good not hood! Yikes.
This! We love our Chips and TOD! Hardest working, most informative blog…bar none!
The Ten Million Click Woman. That’s our Chips. This is so exciting. Sounds like there will be lots of champagne flowing tonight. Maybe there will be mimosas for breakfast. Yummy…
I could do that:)
We ALL have work to do!
Hell Yeah!!
Carlos — kick it, babeeee!!
Less than 5,000 hits to go! Will it be tonight or tomorrow? My cheesy puffs are actually quite delicious! Matched with wasabi nori from Trader Joe’s, salad, and I’m feasting! No wine though.
My little cousin hipped me to yogurt pretzels. They go nice with grape koolaid. 🙂
Ooooooooooooh, cheesy puffs, mmmmmmmm!
Blow your horns, fellas! Oh yeh!!
Hellooooooooooooooooooo: new post 😉

Maybe if anyone from the Republican Party had any sense at all President Obama would have been more than happy to invite them up to Camp David to sit at the table with the grownups.
Hi I have been reading this blog over a year and I have never commented. This is my first post, Hi Everyone….
Welcome in from lurkerdom. Grab a seat and enjoy our “fine” company. There are some unruly folks here whose names I’ll not mention, but on the balance we are very nice people. Cheers!! 😆 😆
Welcome Missevie! Glad you emerged from the shadows. 🙂
