This chick on MSNBC said Romney changed a 3 billion deficit into a 2 billion surplus. Is that right because I’ve heard different things.

      May 15, 2012 at 2:28 pm

The ad is correct about Romney facing huge deficits when he became governor in 2003, and leaving with a surplus. But as we noted in 2007, his oft-touted cuts in wasteful programs and duplicate agencies made only a small dent in the deficit, according to an estimate by the independent, nonpartisan Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation. More significant was the $277 million that Romney cut from the state’s local education aid budget and the $130 million cut from higher education, moves that shifted at least part of the tax burden onto towns and counties.

Moreover, as we have repeatedly written, it is misleading to claim — as the ad does — that Romney closed the deficit without raising taxes. He increased government fees by hundreds of millions of dollars.

As we wrote in 2007 when Romney was making his first presidential bid, Romney in 2003 doubled fees for court filings (which include marriage licensing fees), professional registrations and firearm licenses. Romney also quintupled the per gallon delivery fee for gasoline. All told, the fees raised more than $400 million in their first year. Romney also “closed loopholes” in the corporate tax structure, a move that generated another $150 million in increased revenue.

In addition, Romney cut aid to local cities and counties. In 2004, Romney cut nearly 5 percent, or about $230 million, from the local aid budget. The Massachusetts Municipal Association, representing the state’s cities and towns, said Romney’s cut “forced communities statewide to cut services and raise local taxes and fees.”

3 Charts that Prove that Anyone Who Says the Stimulus Didn’t Work is Lying

    By LOLGOP (February 20, 2012)

For too long the media has let the GOP say the Stimulus failed as if they had any credibility about anything other than how to get a guy who admits going to prostitutes reelected.

What has failed in every single way is conservative politics: Austerity, layoffs, pre-emptive war.

The GOP knows failure. And it doesn’t look like 20+ months of private sector job growth.

Anyone who says the Stimulus didn’t work is knowingly telling a lie.And they must be called out.

Don’t believe me? Watch this video which I’m insisting should be remade with Stacy Keibler or Tina Fey as the presenter.

Mitt Romney’s simplistic tale about the economy

    By Greg Sargent

But a closer look at the closing of this plant complicates Romney’s narrative. Certain aspects of the history don’t support the broader story Romney is telling — and the details offer an interesting window into the larger debate over the economy that’s driving the presidential race.
The rub, though, is that this new plant, which is shipping jobs here from Canada, is being built in part because of incentives created by city, county and state government, Klebba confirms — exactly the sort of government “picking winners and losers” that Romney likes to decry. Obama, by contrast, favors this sort of use of government resources to create American jobs.

In a broad sense, there’s no denying that Obama’s policies have not turned the economy around as fast as we’d hoped. But the example cited by the Romney campaign shows that the story is far more complex than the tale Romney is telling us, and in some ways it even undercuts Romney’s tale.

    • 62 57andfemale
      May 15, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Not to get too nit picky: ” there’s no denying that Obama’s policies have not turned the economy around as fast as we’d hoped”

PBO’s policies were never fully implemented because of Republican obstruction. Had PBO gotten the stimulus he wanted, the highway bill he wanted (still hoping for movement on that but hope springs eternal), the jobs bill he wanted — this economy would again be the beacon to the rest of the world. If he’d been able to do what Reagan did after his own policies trashed the economy and then he ‘fixed’ it with government investment in the country.

So I got see FL Michelle in person yesterday in Dallas. It was great, a relatively small reception, I’d guess around 500. She spoke for 20-25 minutes in what currently is her standard stump speech although her delivery is so great it feels “fresh”. She is warm and genuine, as others have noted. Wasn’t close enough to shake her hand but it was fine. The only think that surprised me is she looks so much more refined in her facial features in person. That’s the only word I can come up with to describe it, not fragile, but just slightly different than my image of her. She wore the black and white in Chips photos from Dallas yesterday, don’t recall if you can tell from the photos she had on white slacks. It was an elegant look. I did get a sense of how tall she is from a few rows back on the rope line. She was taller than her SS agents:-) It was a great experience and I’m so glad I got to attend. I’ve been basking in the day and kept the tube off today to avoid the chatter. Just may have to do that until the election!

George W. Bush: ‘I’m for Mitt Romney’

    By Steve Benen

For Democrats, one of the principal goals of 2012 is to persuade American voters not to go backwards. Bush/Cheney left all kinds of crises for Obama/Biden to clean up, and Dems intend to urge the electorate not to return to the failures of the recent past.
The Republican National Committee conceded recently that a Romney presidency would be the same as Bush’s presidency, “just updated.” Those hoping to characterize Romney as offering Bush’s third term — only more right-wing — have it pretty easy, and given the scope of Bush’s spectacular failures in office, and the fact that many Americans correctly still hold him responsible for national and international problems, that’s not a good thing for the GOP in 2012.

I suspect the former Massachusetts governor won’t have too much to say about today’s endorsement, but I’d like to see Romney answer just one question: how would your presidency be different from Bush’s?

    Good Afternoon TOD

Lol, Good Morning America’s ratings might explain why NBC seems not be so unhappy with President Obama.

The Today can’t seem to recover from the Palin appearance.

For the 2 time in the last 3 weeks, “GMA” ranked No. 1 on 3 of 5 days of the week, beating NBC’s “Today,” by +202,000 on Tuesday (5.334 million vs. 5.132 million), by +217,000 on Wednesday (5.316 million vs. 5.099 million) and by +389,000 on Friday (5.346 million vs. 4.957 million). In addition, “GMA’s” Friday airing ranked as the most-watched morning newscast of the week. This marked the 3rd week in a row and the 4th time in the last 5 weeks that “GMA” owned the week’s most-watched morning telecast.

(These numbers include his interview with Robyn Roberts)

                May 15, 2012 at 5:50 pm

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE that you asked that. All I can say is, NO CHARACTER IS SAFE. As you saw last season with Ned Stark, King Robert Baratheon, and Kahl Drogo.

I can’t really talk about this season – or the overall plot. You’d hate me if I did.

Alfie Allen, who plays Theon, is AWESOME. The casting overall is brilliantly spot on.

What’s different (that I can safely talk about at this point):

I can say that the first season was almost chapter for chapter the first book, with a lot of Sexposition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexposition thrown in. For example, the character of Ros, the whore, isn’t in the books. The scene last season with Dany’s handmaiden Doreah (the one who is currently missing), and Viserys in the bathtub, wasn’t in the books, but was a nice way to talk about the Dragons of Valyria, and how important they were to the world.

The books are also told from POV – Points of View – of different characters. Each chapter is the name of a character, like Arya, Sansa, Eddard, Catelyn, Bran, Jon, Tyrion, and Daenarys….. so we see everything that happens through their eyes, and that character’s focal point.

The show is much different, because you cannot film the internal feelings of a character. So we are seeing some things that happened off-stage in the books, and as a reader weren’t a first-hand witness too, like Robb and the Lying Lady Talisa.

They are also changing the story for the sake of overall narrative, and moving the story along for television, by combining some events, and changing small characters… Tywin and Aray are never at Harrenhall together in the books. But I love that they are in the show, as it makes Tywin much more three dimensional, and shows just how wicked smart Arya truly is. So, that scene where Littlefinger is staring at her (last week), never happened in the books. Personally, I don’t think he said anything to Tywin, and wants to keep that information as a bargaining chip later. I don’t think Tywin has been told that Arya’s missing. Who would have the nerve to tell him? Tyrion is really the only one, but why would he, when he has bigger problems with Stannis’s fleet only days away from King’s Landing? Tywin might suspect she’s not completely a commoner, but there is absolutely no reason for it to even cross his mind she’s a Stark.

                – BOOK Catelyn Stark encouraged Ned to take the position of Hand of the King. Ned wanted to decline, but Catelyn thought it would be good for their House, and Family. I like SHOW Catelyn better.

                – BOOK Cersei never has the scene from season 1 where she tells Catelyn about her first born little boy dying. Also the scene from last Sunday, where even though he knows about her and Jamie, Tyrion tries to give Cersei the out when he says Joffrey has some Robert in him… and Cersei keeps confessing because she knows he knows. In the books, that scene is different. Cersei never completely goes down the confession road, but is still in need of comfort. Tryion approaches her, and instead of stopping like in the show – which is really liked, and gave them both an AMAZING MOMENT, he touches her, and she recoils which wounds him deeply.

I like SHOW Cersei better than BOOK Cersei, because she is much more three dimensional, and not just a different flavor of Marquis de Sade evil as Joffrey.

                whaaaaaaaat else.

OH. The dragons were never stolen in the books. But I think it’s a good thing, and will make what’s coming – better.

There is a lot of action in the books which is a bit redundant, and they’ve gotten rid of that in the show. You need it in the book, you don’t in the show. It’s that simple.

I wish there were more with the remaining Dire Wolves, and their connection to the Stark children. That is a huge part of the story, but there’s plenty of time for that. I will be disappointed if they don’t pick that up more, and soon.

The writing and acting has me hooked, that I really haven’t missed my fav Kahl Drogo (drool hot) as much as I thought I would…. I hate Joffrey(the actor is awesome) when is he dying?

FLOTUS LIVE with L.A. Galaxy. Becks and the team!

  30. May 15, 2012 at 3:14 pm

    This was so cute:

Of course I made a point to visit the White House garden. I was happy to see there were plenty of beautiful lettuce, arugula, potatoes, and spring onions growing well. Clearly all these seasonal products are doing a body good—I was shocked to see how tall Malia had grown since I last saw her. I made sure to stand next to Sasha during a photo op—I wanted to be taller than at least one of the Obama girls.

Mitt says the issue isn’t who gets the most blame, then he blames President Obama and the Democrats.

    STFU Mitt!!!!

I’m guessing Mitt told his handlers in the media to kiss his ass, we went from negative Mitt week last week to Kiss Mitt’s Ass week, the polls are skewed in Mitt’s favor, we’re seeing Mitt speeches and NOT President Obama speeches, and the talking heads are spinning for Mitt. Shame on them!

I’m listening to Rob-Me speak in Des Moines for no particular reason – but OMG, what a boring speaker. When I compare this performace to all the speeches I’ve heard PBO give in the past two days – how can Mitt’s audience even stay awake? I’m just surprised that Mrs. Ann isn’t standing up there next to him.

Pffft – that’s enough of that, time to watch some PBO reruns!

Ron Christie is out of mothballs on Martin Bashir. What a troll. He’s still wet from being under the bridge for so long. Ugghh!

Can’t say I blame ya. It is sickening to see especially when you think about the sacrifices of those that have gone before. He, West and a few others are poster children for The Stockholm Syndrome.

Had to come here for sanity. Even Bashir was gloom and doom. Please explain how Romney is ahead in the polls ? He was behind just a day ago. Who is going to vote for him I suspect something foul.

Sadly, I thought the same about Martin. Most of the time, I’ve had it on mute. Thankfully, my remote is close by. 🙂

“Please explain how Romney is ahead in the polls ?”

There is no explanation because it simply isn’t true. I wouldn’t put too much stock in the polls right now. I will pay closer attention in late June/July.

These kids are the cutest. They’re asking really insightful questions. A kid just asked Beckham “What did it take to become the man you are today?” Wow.

David chuckled and said “Wow….I think the President has some competition” in terms of speaking skills and confidence; the kid was overflowing with both.
