I’m going to post a link to a Coward Fineman op-ed, that actually PRAISES President Obama and is worth a read IMO

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/13/barack-obama-2012-campaign-republican-playbook_n_1510801.html

You’ll have to forgive me but I found Fineman’s post dripping with sleazy sarcasm, making sure he got in every dig he could although veiled. Plus a manipulation of facts. There was a lot of good economic news last week, but if the extent of your news is reading a few op eds on the weekend you wouldn’t know that from Fineman’s post.

Fineman’s “victory lap” frame on the anniversary of getting bin Laden was downright insulting to PBO, reducing it to a campaign stunt and ignoring that it was an actual foreign policy triumph. In fact after reading this I now know why an already sleazy HuffPo went even further into the toilet. He’s the editor and he sets the tone and quality. He’s even worse than I thought he was. He’s no lefty at all – the guy who sat at Mittens’ desk is no friend of dems.

Thanks for this. I’m glad I read it. I need to tweet Ed and Tweety where this good ol’ boy shows up every day and let them know their shows will get turned off when his condescending mug appears. It’s terrifyingly obvious to me why the administration has such trouble getting their word out when they have to get past a filter like Fineman who allegedly speaks for our side.

To be fair, I’m not a fan of Fineman at all and I found his piece excellent, or I wouldn’t have linked it. His piece essentially states that President Obama is beating the Republicans at their own game, which is absolutely true.

          May 13, 2012 at 9:00 am

I’ve got to agree with 57–When he describes the President’s campaign as cold blooded? I would call the campaign many things, but cold blooded is not one. And personally I do not think the President is “beating the republicans at their own game.” They motivate by fear, campaign with intolerance, and legislate in ignorance. IMO the only good thing about this article is that it is found at Huff Po, and no one who takes politics seriously trusts that site anymore.

            Sorry 57 *she* not he

          • 11 nintendowii10
            May 13, 2012 at 9:21 am

He is beating the Republicans at their own game, by taking the fear and intolerance away from HIS campaign. He’s taken away their claim to foreign policy with the successful bin Laden raid, he’s taken away their bleating about a failed economy with all that private sector job growth, the list goes on and on.

Why can’t we give credit where credit is due? Fineman has been a failure in the past and I welcome the fact that he’s acknowledging President Obama’s accomplishments at ALL, or would you rather he hop on the “Obama is a sellout failure” bandwagon? We need all the help we can get in this election, even if it’s from emoprogs like Fineman. I’d rather Fineman cheer for our guy then to cheer on Mitt or a third party run from Ron Paul.

            • May 13, 2012 at 9:38 am

I actually liked Fineman’s post. He made some excellent points about beating Republicans at their own game. Fineman pointed out how much of the election will come down to the economy which is probably true but in every other phase PBO has got the GOP back on it’s heels. What I got from this article is he seems genuinely impressed at how PBO has played his hand so far.

                May 13, 2012 at 9:53 am

derbingle, that is my point and you worded it better than I could. I just don’t understand why others got that Fineman took cheapshots at PBO, just because he hasn’t carried water 100% for Obama in the past.

I’m all about supporting Obama 100%, and I’m also for giving credit when credit is due. Fineman made an excellent op ed that praised the President, and most people here could only find fault as opposed to giving Fineman credit for going in the President’s corner for once.

‘… just because he hasn’t carried water 100% for Obama in the past…’

‘…we can’t even get onboard with him because it’s not 100% “Obama rocks, woohoo…’

                  ‘… just because it’s not 100% Obama cheerleading…’

You really are quick to use and do employ too well the very same offensive mocking phrases the right wing/PL fling at President Obama’s supporters…

I never thought you were a fan! You linked to something important. Thanks! I totally agree about PBO beating Republicans at their own game — it was the supporting stuff that Howard framed in a really sleazy, insulting, condescending manner, IMO. The point of the article was completely justified.

      • 18 hopefruit2
        May 13, 2012 at 9:09 am

Fineman CANNOT be 100% positive about PBO – even when he’s supposedly being positive. He always has to take a cheap shot here, a subtle dig there, while remembering to send a wink and nod to his Repub friends. I’m with 57andfemale on this one. MSNBC is overloaded with these ODS-afflicted pundits.

        • 19 nintendowii10
          May 13, 2012 at 9:18 am

So, even when he praises the President, we can’t even get onboard with him because it’s not 100% “Obama rocks, woohoo!”

That to me is a ridiculous standard. I’m all for giving credit when credit is due. I despise Fineman, but his op-ed he wrote for HP was good and I don’t see why people here can’t give credit where credit is due, just because it’s not 100% Obama cheerleading.

                May 13, 2012 at 10:25 am

Only problem is he sees politics, like the rest of the pundits, as a game. Also, most of what Obama says about Willard is true. Rethugs lie. And one last, everytime someone mentions the state of the economy and how it hurts Obama, but doesn’t mention the treasonous handicapping of it by the rethugs, it irkes the shit out of me. When it comes to the economy, Obama is like a man running a marathon in a swimming pool.

                  May 13, 2012 at 10:28 am

                  That’s it exactly.

                • May 13, 2012 at 10:40 am

I think that’s a good point about how the pundits never talk about the Republicans deliberate sabotaging when it comes to the economy. It’s success or failure is entirely in The President’s hands which is false. If they do want to play that game then they need to mention how this economy has rebounded thanks to the herculean efforts of PBO and in spite of unprecedented GOP obstructionism.

Having said that I still thought Fineman made some excellent points and wrote a very good article.

      • May 13, 2012 at 10:47 am

Fineman’s praise for PBO is always Faint. He was the main one who tried to start the narrative that PBO would NOT run on his record. When PBO did, he was mum. I watched him the other night try to criticize Mitt and defend him at the the same time, almost hinting to Mitt’s people what they should do with his lies. I could care a whit for Fineman and his multiple sources in his head. He is disingenuous at best.

    • May 13, 2012 at 11:03 am

I found the article informative. Learned some new things, extracting only what i need to add to my already full basket of support of the president. I think his analysis could appeal more to independent middle of the road folks, those that need to get on board the democratic train.

Meta, have a super birthday and enjoy the best birthday cake ever, although I don’t know how you can cut into that fabulous face. You really outdid yourself, Chips. Happy Mothers Day to all, whether you are a mother or have one. This is the day to think good thoughts about the mothers we have have or had and, if you’re a mother, to put away the worries and take new joy in your children. Hope the world gives the president and his family at least this day of rest to be together and enjoy each other. Love to all.

First, Happy Mothers Day to all who are mothering including men, grandma’s, auntie’s, god-mother’s, you get my drift… you know who you are. I know you, those whom some forget or get overlooked because they”re not considered “real” mommies, and sometimes all you need is an inch of recognition, a pat on the back, a thank you, something that says I notice even if it’s once in a freaking while what you mean to us, or to me. What you are doing for us, or for me, (sometimes even those same children). If only by respecting you, I will show you how I feel and acknowledge you. Ah, yes! What grand fantasies. So, rather than fantasize, I do declare today Sunday May 13th 2012, Happy Mothers Day to all those who are mothers and mothering, I comprehend. I appreciate, the ups and the downs. The incredible responsibility of having full charge over another human life’s emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, dietary, educational, ethical, etc, development — whilst trying to have a life of your own… Yet, once the little ones are grounded in your lives it’s hard to think of life without them. Joy! But take at least a moment today for yourself and do that thing you so love to do even if it’s fooling around. yeah, fooling-around. Something healthy like that, lol! 🙂
    P.S.
Remember the birth-control, unless you have other intention, well then open the flood gates. And to the republicans put an aspirin between your knees.

Adding my mom’s day greetings to one and all! Just tried to call my 94 yr. old mom in Fl., but I didn’t catch her before breakfast and churchy at her sr. community center. Will catch her later to remind her again of what a great mom she was, how proud I always was of her and how happy I am to have had her in our lives all these years. I sent flowers and candy—-she doesn’t want any other “stuff” at her age. I just opened my mom’s day gifties sent by my scattered daughters and am enjoying a couple of beautiful floral arrangements that arrived yesterday. My fave gift tho was a 4 chapter book written by my 5th grade granddaughter as a project in a special program at her great Ct. school. It looks all professional like a new release from a publishing co., titled “The Adventures of Zach and Abby”. I’ve only read the “prologue” so far, and it seems to be all about the mystery of what’s behind the locked door in the closet! Hmmmmm, I wonder what it could be! 🙂
    Happy day to all!

    [Five minutes later]

    “Mom…”

    “What?”

“I’m thirsty. Can you bring me a glass of water?”

“No. You had your chance. Lights out.”

    [Five minutes later]

    “Mom…”

    “WHAT?”

    “I’m THIRSTY…Can I have a glass of water??”

“I told you NO! If you ask again I’ll have to spank you!!”

    [Five minutes later]

    “Mommm…”

Things Mom Would Never Say but kids wished that she did

“How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back?”

“Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too”

“Just leave all the lights on … it makes the house look more cheery”

“Let me smell that shirt — Yeah, it’s good for another week”

“Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed and walk him every day”

“The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It’s not like I’m running a prison around here.”

“I don’t have a tissue with me … just use your sleeve”

“Don’t bother wearing a jacket – the wind-chill is bound to improve”

One early morning, a lady went in to wake up her son. “Wake up, son. It’s time to go to school!”

Son: “But why Mom? I don’t want to go.”

Mom: “Give me two reasons why you don’t want to go.”

Son: “Well, the kids hate me for one, and the teachers hate me, too!”

Mom: “Oh, that’s no reason to not to go to school. Come on now and get ready.”

Son: “Give me two reasons why I should go to school.”

Mom: “Well, for one, you’re 52 years old. And for another, you’re the Principal!”

You are so right, the Republicans talk pro family, but they don’t legislate pro family. I was reading were one of the things they want to cut is Meals on Wheels, I used to deliver Meals on Wheels, and some of those older folks really appreciate that meal. Cut things like that but don’t dare cut subsides to big oil companies. We hear people talk alot about homosexuality, how it is a sin. But I recall in the Bible were Jesus speaks of looking after the poor, the homeless, the hungry, widows, orphans, visit those who are sick, in prison. So if you do these things Jesus said you did them unto him, but if you did not these things he said he know you not and condemn you unto eternal damnation. So what Bible is the Republicans reading.

    Ugandan LRA ‘commander’ seized

A senior commander in the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army has been captured by the Ugandan army, a spokesman has said.

Caesar Achellam was seized on Saturday following a struggle between Ugandan soldiers and a group of 30 rebels.

The commander, whom Ugandan officials say is a top rebel military strategist, was captured in the Central African Republic, one of several nations where the Ugandan-led LRA operates.

The most notorious wanted LRA leader is war crimes suspect Joseph Kony.

good news from my home country!

this area has been very devastated by the war – you would not believe what is currently on the ground in an area which was once solid in education, agriculture, culture and trade.

      I hope the Kony is eventually captured because not only will a monster be removed from the battle field but also this would remove the excuse the current Ugandan dictator uses to hang on to power and divert mearge resources to unneccessary defense spending;

Yes President Obama sent 100 members of the special forces there – even months before the Kony Viral was the talk of the world. At the time the gop insulted him for it.

A few weeks ago, I saw a story from either the BBC or AFP which had photos of the US team and their African counterparts actually tracking Kony. According to the report that accompanied the photos, the local people in the area were very grateful to the presence of the special operators and were even beginning to tentatively come out of hidding and start cultivating their fields

        May 13, 2012 at 1:33 pm

What I would like to know is how much longer is the mainstream media going to tiptoe around the fact that the Republican Party nominee for the presidency is a pathological liar. The one thing we can all be assured of is that in any op-ed, speech, tv interview, press conference (you name it), Mitt Romney will lie about something. And what I find most troubling is that he lies with such ease. It’s just a part of who he is. He has an aversion to facts. Ironically, his penchant for lying makes him the perfect candidate to represent the Republican Party. Because the thread that runs through all Republican Party political discourse is DISHONESTY.

Mitt Romney is using his lying as a strategy to win the election. He’s trying to muddy the waters and confuse the American people. His opacity about himself is really alarming. All he does is criticize President Obama for everything. He never gives any details about what he would do differently. All we get is empty rhetoric and generalities. He says he should be elected because he was a successful businessman. Really. Has anyone heard any details about what he would do differently? Apparently, his declaration alone is supposed to be all we need to know. Specifics will be provided later, if ever. And while Mitt Romney uses smoke and mirrors and sleight of hand to trick some Americans into voting for him, the mainstream media has become his accomplice in this deception.

Sure there have a some newspaper articles and blog posts that call into question Romney’s mendacity. But I won’t be satisfied until this issue is discussed on the Sunday Shows and the network news. For the mainstream media to look the other way because they are uncomfortable calling a politician a liar is totally unacceptable to me. A lie is a lie. The first principle of journalism is to tell the truth. The longer the media avoids calling a lie a lie the more they give Romney license to continue lying. The question remains. When will the mainstream media do their job of educating and informing the public with the facts? Inquiring minds would like to know.

LadyHawke – you’re absolutely spot on! And NPR has become the worst offender these days, because they are shilling for Romney so openly and vigorously these past few weeks, I can’t even listen anymore. Every comment about Romney is a partial comment, omitting the most damning parts of a story, but weaving in enough facts to make the story credible. What makes me furious about NPR is that they have a lot of credibility out there, and their partial stories will deceive a lot of people. Romney is a liar, and it’s criminal that the media can be paving the way for such a dishonourable man to lead the world.

So, Forbes Ranked Hillary THE most powerful Mom in the World.
    They Ranked Michelle 7th!

    7th???

    • 201 hopefruit2
      May 13, 2012 at 12:57 pm

Link? I’m curious to see who the five individuals between Hillary and Michelle were. As far as I’m concerned, the MSM has been on a tear to take FLOTUS down a peg or two with a bunch of subtly insulting articles (including that WaPo gallery we discussed yesterday). Their pushing of Ann Romney last month backfired as most of us predicted, so they’re pissed.

But the thing we really need to keep in mind is no matter what childish antics the MSM comes up with – FLOTUS is still who she is and that can’t be taken from her.

      • May 13, 2012 at 1:31 pm

I don’t find this list insulting. It takes nothing away from our First Lady, whom I adore, to say that Hillary Clinton is more powerful. I think that’s true. It’s not a judgement of morals or character, intelligence or popularity. Hillary negotiates with world leaders on behalf of the United States. That’s powerful. The people between FlOTUS and Ms. Clinton are people like the president of Brazil, and CEOs of large corporations. This does not diminish anything Michelle Obama has done. If fact, she’s ahead of Argentina’s president, Ketherine Sebelius, and Aung San Suu Kyi. These lists are always somewhat subjective, but I don’t see any disrespect here.

        • May 13, 2012 at 1:33 pm

The fact that Chelsea Clinton is grown doesn’t take away from Hillary’s status as a mother. We are all mothers for as long as we live. The article talks about how involved she was with Chelsea’s wedding, even though far away in the midst of negotiations. I think Michelle Obama is the best FLOTUS of my lifetime in every respect (that includes Jackie Kennedy). I admire her more than I can say. I just don’t see anything wrong with this article.

          May 13, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Today is not to honor the most powerful Mother, but Mothers. So in my opinion it’s a stupid article, because I rather have a good Mother, than a powerful Mother.

          • May 13, 2012 at 1:59 pm

I agree. This is just one of those lists like the ones that come out every New Year. I don’t think it’s stupid or not stupid. I just didn’t think it was insulting.

      • May 13, 2012 at 1:12 pm

It’s a subtle message to Her, frankly. And very insulting.
Here is a Mother, living in the WH, as the First AA FLOTUS, raising 2 little Girls.
And Hillary is SOS, already raised her Kid.
        This is insulting!

        • May 13, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Devalues the role of first lady of the United States, as if she doesn’t work outside the home. It is dumb. Just because she is not paid, it is not considered work? Really? She works as hard as anyone and is still a busy mother.

http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120513/OPINION02/205130323 Good read. Talking about NC Amendment 1….and just Republicans in general now.

The amendment could be used to strip child custody and visitation rights, property rights, end-of-life rights (wills, trusts, power of attorney), and health benefits to any unmarried partner relationship — gay or straight. The hypocrisy is obvious. Republicans claim to be the party of small government, but the reality is that they’re the party of using government when they see fit. When dealing with religious beliefs, Republicans talk about government staying out of the way. When it comes to personal choices dealing with relationships, what religion others follow, or choices about a women’s body, small government rhetoric is pushed aside and intrusive government arrives with a vengeance.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/05/13/1091270/-I-m-Damned-Proud-of-Joe-Biden

Now that the initial Great Gay Marriage Fainting Couch Rush of 2012 is in the rearview mirror, he did everybody who isn’t a Movement Conservative a big fucking favor, especially the President. This had to end. Biden, unexpected or not, popped the bullshit balloon. Everybody knows that Barack Obama is going to go down in US history as one of the best US Presidents on gay rights, and this past moment simply ices the cake on that. We have a bitter and big dollar election to win, and this is going to help re-capture some of that fire that had, inevitably, faded with the reality of governing in a wanker’s paradise where the worst of this nation hold an obstructionist veto over the best of us. The President is a good man who was stuck in a completely untenable position and everybody including the top man himself knew it. Now, he’s free of it. Now, it’s on. Any more “gaffes” like this one, and the unity that follows soon afterward might bring us that more closer to sealing the deal.

In the whole pants shitting and noxious fainting couch kabuki theatre to follow, people, many of them millionaires who simply don’t give a rat’s ass about the massive human suffering that is going on in this country that is staring us all in the face every day, or can’t relate to it because it’s all an abstract hypothetical to them, made sure to add a running current of Very Serious ‘there he goes again, can’t control grandpa/crazy uncle Joe’. Well, I think we could use a dozen more of him, not less of him. History is going to look back on this time and see two heroes taking the nation forward.

  105. May 13, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Governor Deval Patrick praised President Obama for his “clear and principled position” Sunday, four days after Obama became the first president to endorse same-sex marriage.

“It’s about convictions; it’s not about politics,” Patrick said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

The governor’s remarks are likely to be rebutted by critics who believe Obama’s announcement had a lot to do with politics

    • May 13, 2012 at 4:24 pm

UPDATE: Newsweek forwards the following preview for Sullivan’s piece:

It’s easy to write off President Obama’s announcement of his support for gay marriage as a political ploy during an election year. But don’t believe the cynics. Andrew Sullivan argues that this announcement has been in the making for years. “When you step back a little and assess the record of Obama on gay rights, you see, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work.” And President Obama has much in common with the gay community. “He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,” Sullivan writes.

Bobfr, Man was that great. I am going to watch that again. Like I said I am not in favor of gay marriage, but I don’t want to hear people talk like homosexuality is the only sin or abomination to God. Last time I remember marriage between a man and woman has a high divorce rate, so it seem to me one would be getting their own marriage issue straighten out first. Last time I remember alot of those people who support these Republicans hate that man in the Oval Office because he is a black man.

Borrow it, use it, say it over and over and over again. Figures don’t lie, but liars figure.

Well, funny you should ask about me and hubby:) He did start a contract job on May 1st…I didn’t want to post a gleeful tell all here just yet, for the simple fact that it IS just until August…so though this is good that he’s working, we are not out of the woods by any means yet. In order for me to breathe, he needs to be working full time, ALL THE TIME! Until that happens, I’m afraid that I’ll still be on edge and uncertain of the future.Hopefully, he can parlay this into a regular job….because of his teaching background (one of many morphs he has done) he is being trained to be an EPIC trainer…that is the paperless medical records. He will teach physicians how to use this for their Dr’s orders. He seems to enjoy it, but the medical terminology is kicking his ass a little bit:) Luckily, some nurses in his class have taken a liking to him…I told him they should be his new BFF’S…they can really help in that regard. So, we’re ok for the summer….cross your fingers and toes that this turns into a full time gig! Thanks so much for thinking of us:)

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin defended Mitt Romney against charges that a bullying episode from his time in high school is reflective of who Romney is today on CNN’s “State of the Union.” A Washington Post story on Thursday revealed an incident of bullying in which Romney forcefully cut the hair of a fellow student who was presumed to be gay. Romney has said he doesn’t remember the incident and that he was not aware of perceptions about the student’s sexual orientation.

“There’s not a single thing that I know about Mitt Romney in his adult life which suggests this kind of discrimination or prejudice. I don’t believe it was a telling moment in terms of who he is today,” Durbin said.

But, Durbin also noted that it’s hard to believe Romney would forget that kind of an incident. “I find it hard to believe that you couldn’t remember that kind of an episode in your life, even if it occurred in high school,” he said.

    ——

    Unbelievable…..Durbin always disappoints me.

Durbin!? How about BULLYING? DOES A SINGLE THING REMIND YOU OF THAT? THE PATHOLOGICAL LYING..WHAT’S THAT ABOUT DURBIN? DO YOU THINK ROMNEY IS LYING WHEN HE SAYS HE DOESN’T REMEMBER?

GET YOUR HEAD OUTTA THE SAND, DURBIN..IT’S A TOTAL TELLING MOMENT OF WHO HE IS TODAY..AND YOUR DEFENSE OF THE MONSTER SAYS MORE ABOUT YOU THAN ABOUT HIM.
