Happy Mother’s Weekend, Flotus!

This is insane. David Gregory is supposed to be non-partisan and he’s headlining a GOP event with Karl Rove? Olbermann was suspended for giving donations to political groups and politicians yet Gregory is allowed to do this? Gregory works for NBC and NBC News which is the network side of things and they are supposed to be non-partisan. It’s bloody unethical.

            May 12, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Therein lies the problem. The media has the public so screwed up that many don’t know the difference between a “news” show and an “opinion” show. Meet the Press USE TO BE a “news” program when Tim Russert was alive and was host. Everybody knows how bias MTP is now. In fact all the Sunday political shows have vastly fewer Democrats than Republicans every week. But this should not be a surprise. Corporations OWN TV stations. Corporations are largely the political arm of Republicans.

        • 36 utaustinliberal
          May 12, 2012 at 10:16 pm

Ed Schultz does an opinion show. That’s highly different from doing a news program on a major news network. Gregory is considered a new journalist who works for NBC not MSNBC. He is supposed to be objective. He cannot be out there raising funds for a GOP group that runs nasty ads for the GOP and raised funds and actively fought against healthcare reform. That is 100% unethical. We all know Ed leans left. MTP is supposed to be neutral and non-partisan.

This would have been an otherwise great gallery weren’t it for the fact that WaPo decided to include one of PBO’s ex-girlfriends from college. Not only does she NOT belong in this group of “Barack Obama’s Women” but it’s disrespectful to his wife and daughters, who are also included in the gallery. Secondly, I don’t think that Desiree Rogers belongs in the group either. Why not Kathleen Sebellius or Hillary Clinton? Rogers is included because she was associated with a “scandal” early on in his Presidency and got fired.

Furthermore, I believe that if the story of the story with this ex hadn’t come out, WaPo would not have had the gallery in the first place – not now anyway. Afterall, it’s Mother’s Day, and a tribute to his mother or perhaps the First Lady and/or mother-in-law is much more fitting than a selection of women, some of whom are clearly out of place.

      • May 12, 2012 at 8:08 pm

I actually liked it. I see it as a slide show of women who shaped who he is today as a man and as a president. I personally don’t have anything against the ex girlfriend or Desiree Rogers. Nothing they did or said will hurt his election or change the positive views Americans have of him.

        • 43 hopefruit2
          May 12, 2012 at 8:31 pm

Initially I thought the same as you did. But I noticed that his mom-in-law and grandma were both absent, and that was a dead giveaway that this wasn’t what the WaPo purported it to be. I find it difficult to justify why Desiree Rogers and college ex-girlfriend and not his mom-in-law (who lives with him and helps to raise his daughters), or his own grandmother Toot (who raised him in part) who from everything I’ve read about them suggests they’ve played key roles in shaping the kind of person that he is, are not included in this gallery.

Also, why not Hillary Clinton – someone who he ran against in his first presidential campaign – and without question must have gotten a lot of political experience from dealing with her, and whom he selected to be in a top cabinet position?

I believe WaPo’s intent was to be cleverly disrespectful by including a few women they BELIEVE to be associated with some form of potential embarrassment where PBO and his wife
are concerned, while seemingly making it about some innocuous value about women voters.

So I’m just questioning WaPo’s choices, but have nothing personal against Ms. Rogers or Ms. Cooke – I don’t even know them!

          • May 12, 2012 at 8:39 pm

That’s fine but I still think people are taking this slide way too seriously.

              May 12, 2012 at 8:46 pm

Actually we’re not. WaPo wants people to think it’s a serious or sincere effort, but it’s not.

I agree with you hopefruit, I had the same reaction. I went into it thinking it was going to be a “feel good” piece, but as I read the captions, I began to sense a bit of an agenda. It relies heavily on “insights” from David Maraniss, who has a gossipy book about former girlfriends coming out that he wants to sell. Then it quotes the insufferable Jodi Kantor, who has the gall to think she knows what is in the First Lady’s heart and mind. And the kicker for me was the caption for the Anita Dunn photo–complete with the (hack job) quote about how the White House was a hostile workplace! They later say that she disavowed the quote, but why bring up the completely debunked quote in the first place?

ms cooke??? well that made me laugh because your head is definitely working fast.

it just occured to me that since the WAPO is the place that broke the story about mitt the entitled lying bully and his assults in high school, they now feel that they have to do that false equivalence and trash PBO and his youth.

Could you please contact WAPO with your thoughts and complaints about their blantant omission? you are making a very valid point about the people omitted versus those included.

LOL! Thanks globalcitizenlinda. Since WaPo tweeted the gallery, I tweeted them back about the glaring omission in response. I’m sure my name is on Karl Rove’s list of “Twitter and Internet O’Bots that the Media should be wary of.”

I think his mother in law, Marian Robinson, his Tut – Madelyn Dunham, and Hilary Clinton would have been stellar additions to that list. I have to admit, I sense a bit of “shade” being thrown including Desiree Rogers and the ex-girlfriend. But you know, that’s what shade is, facts mixed with just enough innuendo to tweak a subtle negative thought.

President Barack Obama is ahead of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney among Michigan voters in the race for president, a new poll shows, and is leading in part because of strong support among women.

Obama was leading 45.1 percent to 39.5 percent in the Glengariff Group Inc. poll, with 15.4 percent undecided; the margin of error is 4 percentage points.

Obama enjoys far stronger support among women, leading Romney 47.3 percent to 35 percent, while nearly tied with Romney among men, 43.8 to 43.1 percent. The results pose a potential “gender gap” problem for Romney, pollster Richard Czuba said Friday. The Republican needs to be wary of that margin, he added.

“Barack Obama, if he wins, will win it on the women’s vote,” Czuba said. “I think, for the Romney campaign, that is the issue now, making headway with the gender gap.”

For Willard to make headway with the gender gap he would have to: 1) change his personality from the inside out; 2) erase every rotten misogynist thing he’s said and had recorded on Youtube since he started campaigning in 2007; 3) reject everything he ever learned over a lifetime of seeing women as helpmates, rather than fully independent and strong human beings; 4) start publicly advocating for pro choice, the widespread availability of free contraceptives, the American Health Act, equal pay for equal work and improved educational opportunities for women, for starters; and 5) reject the tea party, evangelicals and all rwnjs. IOW, it ain’t gonna happen. Even if he tried every trick in the book to pull it off, he would still act and talk like the phony he is. And our mamas didn’t raise any stupid daughters.

The Washington Post lead said that the question pundits now have, is not why is Romney so disliked by women, but what makes women like Obama so much? Those idiots will scratch their heads forever.
I’ll tell them. President Obama RESPECTS us. He knows the struggles of a single mother and a hardworking grandmother who didn’t get the promotions she deserved. His respect is deep and we know it.
On the other hand, WE GET him. We understand his goals and where he wants to take the country. His vision coincides with ours….a more compassionate, open country where everyone gets a fair shake. We understand that, because it is just recently that we have been able to get an almost fair shake. We understand minorities, because we were a big one politically. We see that life must be co-operative, not constantly competitive. We do not like bullies. Many of us have been bullied, and we’ve seen our children bullied…..I have, and mine were not even minority children in their schools.
Mitt does not respect women. John McCain does not respect women. GWB does not respect women. They may say so, but as my mother said: “What you do speaks so loudly, I can’t hear a word you say!”
President Obama has a compassionate heart and a brilliant mind. We are SO fortuante!

        May 12, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Yes, definitely. I firmly believe you can tell the caliber of a man by the kind of woman he marries. PBO married a strong, independent, intelligent, beautiful woman who knows herself and her standards. This shows me what kind of man he is as well as anything!

    • 63 hopefruit2
      May 12, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Washington Post just wants an excuse to focus on Barack Obama’s college ex-girlfriend under the guise of a seemingly innocent question. They don’t want to focus on Romney whose strange history and secretiveness warrants twice as much scrutiny as PBO.

But they want to focus on PBO and have put out a gallery of “Barack Obama’s Women” with his college ex-girlfriend amidst supremely important female figures like his mother and FLOTUS. His mother-in-law is NOT included in this gallery (ask yourself why would Desiree Rogers and a college fling be included in such a gallery but not PBO’s mother in law who has lived with the family for the last 3.5 years and helped to take care of his children?!?!?)

I’m so sick of this media and their constant hidden agendas when it comes to this President.

Amen, Carolyn! At first I was going to suggest that you send this to Wapo, and it may still be a good idea. But on second thought(s) I figured this writer must be clueless to ask this question, and there’s probably little hope. And then figured, let them wonder. If this is the best they can do, let them get all the way to election day asking stupid questions. Let the juggernaut work under the radar.

    • 67 jackiegrumbacher
      May 12, 2012 at 9:45 pm

How dumb does the Wapo have to be to ask that question? Romney acts and speaks like an arrogant prig who panders to nutjobs whose agenda includes putting women in their place and controlling them, There has not been one anti-woman piece of legislation from right wing states that Willard hasn’t supported. His personality is nothing short of repellent. PBO is a caring, charismatic man who has worked tirelessly to ensure that women are treated fairly from fair pay to affordable health care to a full and final say in family planning. He has filled his cabinet with strong and intelligent woman and sent two brilliant women to the Supreme Court. He’s warm, personable and has the sort of personality that draws people to him. Wow, it’s really a head scratcher, wapo. Maybe you can put your most serious thinkers to the task of figuring this one out.

Jill Biden jumped into an Iowa congressional race on Saturday, telling a crowd at a private fundraiser in Des Moines that it was about time the Hawkeye State was represented by a woman.

The candidate in question has some major Democratic connections, though.

Christie Vilsack, wife of Agriculture Secretary and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, is running against five-term Republican Steve King in that state’s fourth district. The vice president’s wife pointed out that 14 Democratic women have run for governor or federal office in Iowa and lost.

“We all know it’s long past time for Iowa to elect a woman to Congress,” said Biden, according to a pool report. “Until now, the only place you could find a place a woman from Iowa serving in Congress was in the movies and that was a Billy Wilder movie released in 1948.”

Standing in a plywood-walled command post before Gen. John R. Allen, the supreme allied commander in Afghanistan, the nervous-but-earnest young lieutenant cast his platoon’s task for the day in the grand terms of counterinsurgency strategy — the American military’s wartime playbook for the past several years. The goal of the platoon’s walk through a bazaar and meetings with village leaders, the lieutenant said, was for the Afghan government to be “seen as an effective governing body that gains legitimacy with the local population.”

Such ambition used to elicit enthusiastic praise from visiting generals. Not anymore.

“How are you going to create that as an end state?” Allen asked, making no effort to mask his deep skepticism.

Faced with an order from President Obama to withdraw 23,000 troops by the end of the summer, and the prospect of further reductions next year, Allen is hastily transforming the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan. Instead of trying to continue large U.S. counterinsurgency operations for as long as he can, he is accelerating a handover of responsibility to Afghan security forces. He plans to order American and NATO troops to push Afghans into the lead across much of the country this summer, even in insurgent-ridden places that had not been candidates for an early transfer.

    Mother Dear

    By James J. Metcalfe

Dear Mother, you are part of me, and I am part of you

And you are part of everything, I ever think or do.

And out of all the parts of life, I am or hope to be

I need not tell you, Mother Dear, you are the best in me.

You are the sweetest of my songs, the truest of my friends

You are the sunshine in my heart, the dream that never ends.

You are the hand that comforts me, the smile that lifts me up

And you are all the sugar, at the bottom of my cup.

Oh, Mother Dear, there are some things, I cannot write or say

But all my love and gratitude… are all for you today.

WE all mostly know who the strong women in PBO’s life are, and no amount of resurrected past girlfriends can overshadowed the females currently in his life IF WE DON’T PAY THEM ANY ATTENTION. The only attention I intend to give the media in this regard is WHEN they bring forward his previous wife, or the children PBO has outside of marriage and has not been supporting (in other words…NEVER)!

I don’t mind it at all. We all have a past and she was a part of his.

In fact she was honest enough to write “In Barack Obama she had found a kindred soul, dislocated, caught in between,” Maraniss writes. But Cook wondered in her diary whether she was Barack’s ideal: “I can’t help thinking that what he would really want, be powerfully drawn to, was a woman, very strong, very upright, a fighter, a laugher, well - experienced — a black woman I keep seeing her as.”

She recognized, he needed Michelle Obama. And here we are.

      • May 13, 2012 at 9:40 am

Their past relationship, the history of it, is ennobling in so many ways. The depth of their characters, both of them, is so obvious is her diary entries and remembrances. She is a prelude to Michelle. Michelle is the woman she envisioned as PBO’s future partner.

    • May 12, 2012 at 8:21 pm

I don’t see why its a problem. I mentioned up above that these are women that shaped who he is as a man and/or as a president. And I don’t see anything wrong with saving the best and most important for last – his two girls.

I honestly think people are worrying too much about the ex girlfriend. Yes, she talked to and gave info to an author about her relationship with Pres.Obama but was any of it damaging? Its not like she came out and made accusations that they have a love child or he beat her/hurt her in any way.

Then we should complain about 90% percent of the women in that slide show. I doubt his female cabinet members, Desiree Rogers, etc. aren’t/weren’t motherly figures to him.

why include an ex girlfriend and give here equal status with the First Lady…it is disrespectfull…

        • May 13, 2012 at 12:26 am

omg…just forget it. I can’t believe I’m defending WaPo. They are not giving ANY of these women equal status to FLOTUS. That’s just an absurd claim. The title isn’t “The Most Important Woman in Barack Obama’s Life”. Its titled “Barack Obama’s Women”. Obviously it was given that title to draw people in. Watching the slide I clearly saw a show of women who , again, shaped who he is as a man and as a president. if no one is worried about the ex ,why are people getting upset that she’s in there? If your real complaint is that WaPo is giving her equal status simply because she’s in the slide then lets call WaPO and have them remove every pic in that slide except for Michelle’s.

Give me a break people. I’m done with this topic.

I haven’t been able to respond because Real Life interrupted

I think it’s sad from the responses that no one seems to understand what so many of us are saying. Or it seems have taken the time to find out about what we are saying.

Chipsticks said “I read it as a heartfelt appeal”

That has been just our point, the fact that you can read that letter and see it as a “heartfelt response” Do you not see how patronizing that letter was? As I said The President is a Harvard Educated Lawyer. He is NOT five years old. As I said that is how Masters use to talk to their slaves, and “Ladies of the house use to talk to their “mammies”

“one last thing. To my knowledge we have only two openly gay people who comment at the site – I’m not sure much consideration was given to their feelings this week by those who felt angered by the letter. It can’t have been too pleasant constantly reading that their rights are a “wedge issue”

Ah, I see what you did there, Nice, nice try.

Anyway it seems like I’m beating a dead horse here. I cannot beat my head on a brick wall attempting to try and make people understand what BWD did can be upsetting and offensive to some. It’s obvious no true dialogue about this issue is wanted

    Carry on

    • May 12, 2012 at 8:37 pm

Heads-up everyone – handy little primer on scum-author Ed Klein ….

“Here’s what you need to know about Edward Klein:

    1. Klein’s last book, which was self-published, suggests Obama was born on foreign soil and is a practicing Mulism. In his 2010 work The Obama Identity: A Novel (Or Is It?), Klein co-authored along with a former Republican congressman is a compendium of Obama conspiracy theories. He had to self-publish the book.

    2. Klein promoted a shameful conspiracy theory that Bill Clinton raped Hillary. In his 2005 book, Klein promoted an anonymous, hateful allegation supposedly made by two people who “claim” to have spoken with Bill Clinton about the circumstances surrounding the birth of the Clintons’ daughter Chelsea.”

lisalovesobama, I’m not too concerned about these ads – I think the only people who will be affected by them are those who won’t vote for PBO anyway. Unlike Santorum, Mankini and Paul, negative ads against PBO are unlikely to yield same return on investment because enough people know him, have seen his policies implemented for the past 3-4 yrs, LIKE and TRUST him. Romney on the other hand is seen as a liar, a flipflopper without a core and someone who shouldn’t be believed or trusted, and so any actions on his behalf will be seen accordingly.

In the first debate of what could be one of the hottest congressional races in the country, Republican Rep. Joe Walsh and Iraqi War veteran Tammy Duckworth, accused each other of wanting to end Medicare.

Walsh voted for Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget which Walsh said is the only plan on the table to save Medicare. Duckworth said the Wisconsin Republican’s budget “guts” the troubled program.

Walsh and Duckworth also clashed on gay marriage and contraception.

“If you pass the Ryan budget, it would end Medicare as we know it tomorrow — not in 10 years — it would gut it as we know it tomorrow,” Duckworth said as they talked over each other.

“It would save Medicare,” Walsh said, telling his Democratic rival to drop her argument: “Get rid of that.”

“Congressman,” Duckworth continued, “In order to give a tax cut to millionaires and billionaires, you would completely gut Medicare. You’re right: The seniors in my district are scared that they are going to lose their Social Security…”

see something else they did in that listing – they tried to list exactly the same number of endorsements for PBO as they did that of mitt the bullying liar – which is a total manipulation. it seems that once his list ended, they decided to not list any for PBO otherwise our list would be overwhelming.

Even in his commencement speech to graduates today, Romney was a walking contradiction:

“Today, thanks to what you have gained here, you leave Liberty with conviction and confidence as your armor. You know what you believe. You know who you are. And you know whom you will serve. Not all colleges instill that kind of confidence, but it will be among the most prized qualities from your education here,” said Romney. “Moral certainty, clear standards, and a commitment to spiritual ideals will set you apart in a world that searches for meaning.”

      Some comments from this post:

The damage to the kid whose hair was chopped of has not even been discussed. In high school, three older girls held me down to see if my pubic hair matched my red hair. It was traumatic. I did not tell anyone, not my parents, not my teachers and not my friends. I certainly remember who they were and, after more than 50 years, don’t think of it often but I DO REMEMBER.

      snip/

I still remember high school events after nearly 50 years. Maybe Mitt has a touch of memory loss. Just what we don’t need, a bully who can’t remember bullying in the White House.

      snip/

I don’t care what Mitt did in high school so much as the fact he doesn’t remember that he did that. I bullied a kid when I was thirteen. I did something that totally humiliated him, and I was kicked out of Boy Scouts for it. I remember it as if it were yesterday, and feel awful any time I think back to that.

Barack Obama v. Mitt Romney: Romney’s selective memory Other Voices 05/13/2012 3:29 AM
Mitt Romney’s op-ed piece (“Romney issues Ohio challenge,” May 4) conveniently ignores that when the policies of the previous Republican administration brought on the greatest financial collapse and economic recession in more than 80 years, while millions were losing their jobs, their homes and their pensions, Mr. Romney and the Republicans said, “Do nothing!”

He now has the gall to criticize President Barack Obama for not turning the economy around faster! Perhaps, if the Republicans had put aside their political ambitions and worked with President Obama to help those affected by their policies, they might have the right to criticize him. But for the past three years, the Republicans have done nothing but sabotage every effort he has made to turn the economy around.

Mr. Romney’s business experience has never been as a “job creator.” His only business experience is to make himself a lot of money at the expense of others. Just as the goal of the Republican leadership from the very beginning has been to make President Obama a one-term president, “whatever the cost to the American people.”

Mr. Romney is only interested in his own political ambition. He’s going to turn things around? He doesn’t even live on the same planet as the rest of us!
