New Wall Street Scandal Threatens Romney

A surprising development on Wall Street Thursday could magnify a little-discussed but key difference between President Obama and Mitt Romney — one with enormous consequences for public policy.

On a conference call with analysts, JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon announced that his firm had lost $2 billion investing in the same species of derivative that exacerbated the 2008 financial crisis.
This is exactly the type of major loss of depositor money that the Obama administration sought to ban with one of the major planks of its 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law — the Volcker Rule, named after former Fed chairman Paul Volcker. And that’s bad news for Romney, who wants to repeal the whole law, Volcker Rule and all.

    • May 11, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I think this is another lightning rod moment for the campaign. Perhaps Swiss Mitt will also need to suspend his campaign to deal with it. Morons.

        May 11, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I can’t wait for the DNC ads that take on this issue. There is enough evidence already to disqualify Mitt Romney for the presidency, but the fact that he has said out loud that he wants to repeal Dodd-Frank is just beyond the pale. It’s remarkable that he has not been challenged on this idiotic and reckless statement. But it looks like the feckless media will be compelled to ask for comment now. This J.P. Morgan debacle is politically toxic for Romney. As usual, he’s on the wrong side of the issue.

I’m hoping that one of the techies at OFA hdqtrs can help me locate the segment today. 🙂

Bye, bye…don’t let the door hit ya where the Lord split ya. He was born in Brazil and he became a citizen to take advantage of the education system here if he remained a citizen. He was a co-founder of facebook because he had money to fund the endevor. According to the movie, he was so concerned with making chump change he couldn’t see the forest for the dollar signs. If it were not for the Napster guy who introduced Zuckerburg to investors, Facebook would be a college social site. Eduardo is just a opportunist who will be a man without a country. He has no allegiance to no one or any country especially if they have taxes.

Renouncing US Citizenship don’t get you off paying US taxes for a numbers of years, and any income you derived from US source business is US taxable. Hence Mitt parking his funds overseas….what the IRS don’t know it can’t tax.

        • 56 theo67
          May 11, 2012 at 1:59 pm

I think part of the advantage is renouncing the citizenship before the IPO takes effect. They did say in the article that those renouncing have to pay an exit tax, but I think it gets counted as capital gains as though they sold actual stock (which is taxed lower). I don’t know investment finance more than at a rudimentary level to say more than what I read in the article, so I’ll defer to you, since it sounds like you know what you’re talking about.

    “Health Care Game Changer?”

The Obama administration will soon announce $1.3 billion in rebate checks to nearly 16 million Americans from health insurance companies.

Mark Halperin: “From almost the moment the Affordable Care Act (a/k/a “ObamaCare”) was signed into law, the administration has been playing defense… But the rebate provision of the law — the fruits of the so-called ’80/20 rule’ — is about to kick in big time, as millions of Americans receive rebate checks or premium reductions from insurance companies who have failed to spend enough on patient care. This cash could be a true game changer in public attitudes about whether the law actually is beneficial and good public policy.”

Progress on a Key Goal to Train 500,000 Workers for Jobs in Manufacturing Sector

On June 8, 2011, President Obama announced key steps by private sector partners towards building the educated and skilled workforce U.S. manufacturers need to successfully compete in the 21st century economy. This includes a five-year goal by the Manufacturing Institute and its partners to award 500,000 industry-based credentials to individuals, positioning them for employment and advancement in manufacturing jobs.

In less than a year, the Manufacturing Institute and its partners have announced significant progress towards achieving that five-year goal. Over the past year, the certification bodies partnered with the Institute have issued 84,738 certifications to students and incumbent workers that cover in-demand, portable skill-sets necessary across multiple manufacturing sectors.
This is just one part of President Obama’s comprehensive effort to build an economy built to last, based in part on a strong manufacturing sector and a skilled workforce.

I wish I could use that twit machine, cause she grabbed that dude by the ankle like a little chihuahua and took him down. Death by gnarl.

She just acknowledged the tweets coming in on her page. There was a slight chuckle, but for the most part she never missed a beat after her blow-up. She remained cool as a cucumber afterwards.

I know what Mitt Romney suppose to have done was long time ago. But we all know that alot of people are affect by things that happen to them along ago. And alot of people are affect by how they were treated in high school, if you were treated bad those things can stay with you.

With all the talk over Mitt Romney’s bullying of a presumed gay classmate, some have questioned whether it’s fair to judge someone on their actions in high school. But everyone agrees that anything from a recent political career is fair game.

So it’s telling that one doesn’t have to reach that far back to find other incidents of LGBT bullying from Romney’s close staff. Romney campaign senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom (of Etch-a-Sketch fame) outed a transgender woman in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, effectively ending her political career, when he was a reporter for the Boston Herald.

America Blog reminds us of the incident, relayed in a GQ profile, which tells of Fernhstrom’s apparent “glee” when he found the representative’s birth certificate:

Fehrnstrom saved his cheap shots for smaller-time Massachusetts pols. When a political activist and gadfly named Althea Garrison was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the fact that she was transgender was an open secret in Boston political circles. But Fehrnstrom was the first one to put that information into print—”I can remember his glee when he found the birth certificate,” says former Herald reporter Robert Connolly—thus bringing a swift end to Garrison’s future on Beacon Hill.

Romney himself also abolished a commission working against LGBT bullying in Massachusetts as governor..

So now they want to question the fairness of judging someone on their actions as a young person? Frigging hypocrites!

Today, behind closed doors in Charlotte, North Carolina, legislators from 15 states will meet with the oil and gas industry to discuss so-called “model legislation” as part of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The result could be laws that handicap renewable energy targets — while creating loopholes for fossil fuels, written directly by the oil and gas industry itself.

They don’t care about anything but money. Forget about the lives of people and the planet. You can bet the filthy polluting Koch bros have a hand in it too since they are Fossil Fuel Kings.

It’s such a joy when you get to work very close to home and end up with minimal traveling time.
