Heads up: President Obama Speaks at a Cinco de Mayo Reception

Steve Benen: After three consecutive weeks of discouraging news, today’s report from the Department of Labor on initial unemployment claims pointed to a sharp improvement in the data.

Indeed, the new numbers not only reverse the discouraging trend, they’re back to the level we saw in mid-March, which is near a four-year low.

…. It’s worth emphasizing that week-to-week results can vary widely, and it’s best not to read too much significance into any one report. Still, it’s generally heartening when the numbers are at least pointing in the right direction.

E.J. Dionne: We expect some hypocrisy in politics, but it was still jaw-dropping to behold Republicans accusing President Obama of politicizing the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden. Wasn’t it just eight years ago that the GOP organized an entire presidential campaign — including the choreography of its 2004 national convention — around the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and George W. Bush’s response to them?

Obama’s opponents don’t just think we have short attention spans. They imagine we have no memories whatsoever…

…. On foreign policy, Obama has kept his 2008 promise to turn history’s page. The nation is in no mood to turn it back.

MSNBC: GM posted a profit of $1 billion in the first quarter, beating Wall Street expectations on strong demand in its key North American market.

GM also said the U.S. economy was improving and it expected its core North American results in the second and third quarters to largely match the first quarter due to scheduled downtime at its large truck plants.

Afternoon all!! Am i the only one who finds it odd and a little creepy, that every interview Willard has given, his wife is with him??? Also how can this fool even think he’s Presidential when first, he insults the British PM and then sticks his nose into the business in China while Hillary and Geitner are there.

    • 12 Melanie
      May 3, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Odd…no. According to many pundits his wife is his biggest asset. As they say, she humanizes him. He has no charm, character or soul and she supposedly gives him that. That’s what they say….

She also protects him from being asked any serious questions. Never seen anything like it from past candidates.

          May 3, 2012 at 5:27 pm

So when Mitt debates President Obama, I guess Ann will be standing up there by his side to help humanizes him and answer questions for him.

      • 17 jackiegrumbacher
        May 3, 2012 at 5:24 pm

If a Democratic candidate for president had to have his wife with him for every event and interview, insults would rain down on him about mommy’s apron strings and every R pundit would be making unsubtle comments about his manhood. But if Rombot does it they just say it makes him more human. Translation: whatever he does is okay cause he’s Republican so if he needs a wife as a prop we won’t say out loud what we really think, we’ll say its cute.

          May 3, 2012 at 6:00 pm

She’s a crutch for him to lean on and a shield against “tough questions” by reporters. They are both too stupid to realize how emasculating these joint appearances are.

      • May 3, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Also think he’s insecure without her. He needs her to hold his hand. And my suspicion is that she is the driving force behind his candicacy (ies). When he got into some trouble after one of his blunders, she said, “Maybe I should do all the talking from now on.”

        • 20 Debz
          May 3, 2012 at 5:33 pm

At some point she cant be there talking for him unless Ann is planning on debating the President.

          May 3, 2012 at 5:52 pm

the thing about Willard and Mrs. Money is that if the camera pans around to their backs, you will see Ann’s hand moving the stick that controls her human dummy’s mouth. People call him an empty suit, more like an empty shell. 🙄

WASHINGTON — Democratic challengers raised more money than Republican incumbents in 20 competitive House races from California to Virginia during the first three months of the year, and President Barack Obama’s party has the upper-hand in eight other districts where congressmen are retiring.

The early look at fundraising, laid out in reports filed with the Federal Election Commission, suggests momentum at this point may be on the Democrats’ side as the party tries to wrest control of the House from the GOP.

Hi TOD Family and our beautiful Chips. Let us keep them on their toes, and remember that we have the man with a plan for the people”Forward.” And with all of our might, we will kick off the journey with him and our First Lady on Sat. Stay focus, keep the candles burning as you pray, meditate in your quiet space because we are going to need to go to that space a lot in the future.

I had to pray and ask for forgiveness to come into my space, because I allowed some ugly remarks to come my way about our president. Do not worry, I did not back off. I sent them a lovely e mail with the facts. This is the war of wars, but we are ready.

Stay focus and on message with the facts. Let us give them doses like Ms. Cutter!!! Let it rip!!! I love ou all so much. We are going to win this one. PRESSON as Bobfr tells us. ((((((Love you Chips))))))HZ

Now he’s whining about the dissident Chen to look like he knows something about Foreign Policy! Lord help us all! GOP ignores the Water’s Edge Rule. They want to start a damn economic war with China to get the dissident to the US. Sorry, but I think NOT. They won’t let Latin Americans stay who were brought here as babies. They have to be deported because they'[re not documented, according to the bigot Kobach. The GOP Congress is NUTS. God help us.

Does anyone know what’s going on in Ohio and Florida that Quinnipiac has Romney statistically tied with PBO? I don’t get that.

    • May 3, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Who knows, but it’s a snapshot in time. I wonder when that poll was taken, as PBO has “won the last few news cycles”, as they say, with the trip to Afghanistan and all the OBL rememberances—–and the Obama campaign just started ads in those states this week—–so I would expect the next polls there to tick back up.

as a Floridian, there is nothing good I can say about the likely voters being polled. Come November 6th, I’m really going to be crossing my fingers and toes. Heaven forfend the mysterious re-emergence of hanging chads versus dimpled chads. Yikes.

    Barney Frank on Tweety basically speaking the truth about the repugs having lost their ever loving minds, and about Wall Street supporting Willard for the very same reason other repugs are doing so, as revenge against PBO. 🙄 what is wrong with these Wall street guys? PBO saved their bacons and they became more profitable than they were for a while with the only caveat being better regulations to protect main street and they strike back like a woman scorned. I’ll never understand these idiots. {{shaking my head}}

You can’t share a little bit, they don’t want you to have 1/2, they don’t want to break you off a piece, THEY WANT ALL THE MONEY WITH NO REGULATIONS, you know, the way it used to be. They don’t share and they don’t play well with others.

      Pretty simple, really.

Tweety defending Carter because apparently Willard dissed him again. Running through his list of accomplishments. basically said that Willard doesn’t have the guts that Jimmy did since he buckled under the pressure of the rightwingers who wanted him to fire the gay staffer. Man, Willard. You shouldn’t have made Tweety mad.

    • 57 aquagranny911
      May 3, 2012 at 6:15 pm

Regardless of what any may feel about Jimmy Carter politically, he IS an ex-President, an elder statesman, a tireless worker for peace and a good & decent man. He deserves respect. The Mittwipe is none of these things & shows his total unfitness to be President more every day.

        Spot on granny.

      • May 3, 2012 at 7:43 pm

And, President Carter brokered a peace between Israel and Egypt that has lasted to this day. This would be another of President Carter’s accomplishments that Willard would be too afraid to try. He has already said he’ll defer to Bibi when it comes to U.S./Israel foreign policy, so we know NOT to expect much action on resolving the Israeli/Palestinian issue. Romney has already shown that he is unwilling to do anything that Bibi would object to, even if Israel’s citizens disagree.

BIbi is an unstable fruit cake with extra nuts & even his own people are running scared from him. Mitty is totally clueless in whatever state he lives in or planet he currently inhabits. I’ve seen some bad candidates run for Prez but Mitty takes the boob prize, even GW had one or two brain cells rolling around in his head.

I don’t understand this. This lady undoubtedly is collecting Social Security. In order to do that, some form of ID that validates you were born in the US has to be shown (or further documentation if you weren’t). If whatever she used is good enough for the federal government, it surely should suffice for voter ID. Talk about taking away our freedoms!!!! Seems unconstitutional to me.

Rocker Ted Nugent has a history of violent rhetoric against President Obama and other leading Democrats, but after saying he expected to be “dead or in jail” if the president won re-election, he found himself interviewed by the Secret Service. Nugent, whom Mitt Romney personally reached out to in order to secure his endorsement, told CBS that he spoke with the Romney camp again after the incident and that they “expressed support” for him. TPM reached out to a Romney spokesman to confirm his account and will post their reply.

You’re right. Does this mean we need to uncheck each time we post ? This is absurd.

I had to uncheck the box when I’d leave the kindle and turn it back on. What really made me mad was that it also happened on my pc and I hadn’t logged off. This is absurd.

Not every time but apparently after a period of inactivity. I left my computer with TOD logged in as I always do, came back an hour later and it had defaulted back and my inbox was full of emails.

Sue, do be sure to check that the box “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” and “Notify me of new posts via email” below your name and email address in the “Comment” area are not checked. If they are, you will get a flood of email.

Yup. I too got a buncha mails from TOD about this thread and I have never signed up for e-mail notifications.

WASHINGTON: The Obama Campaign in a new ad has accused presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney of outsourcing jobs to India when he was the Massachusetts Governor.

“What about Mitt Romney? As a corporate CEO, he shipped American jobs to places like Mexico and China. As governor, he outsourced state jobs to a call center in India. He’s still pushing tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas,” said the advertisement which will run in the key States of Virginia, Ohio and Iowa.

“It’s just what you’d expect from a guy who had a Swiss Bank account,” says the advertisement which is approved by President Barack Obama, who is seeking his reelection this November.

The Obama Campaign is believed to be spending about $780,000 on running this ad in these key States, reports said.

The Indian IT software and services companies get about 60 per cent of their revenues from the US market, as American firms outsource their back office jobs to India and other countries to cut cost.

I watched the Chinese dissent story on CBS evening News & I think it’s going to back fire on Romney big time & he will regret why he embarrassed his own government for political purposes. If he wants to start a war with china he should say so. This story is serious & it’s going to change by the day & the end result will show the American people why Willard will NEVER be President.

(AP) WASHINGTON — An Associated Press survey of 32 leading economists suggests steady hiring will get strong enough to push the unemployment rate below 8 percent by Election Day.

If this is the case…they’re gonna cue the fear factor….

Just an observation——Bill Clinton was on Ellen today—–love her and think she and her popularity have done so much to change attitudes—–but I believe he got through the whole interview, which included a discussion of the bin Laden raid, without mentioning President Obama’s name once. Even when Ellen asked how he learned of bin Laden’s demise, he confirmed it was not from Hillary but from “the WH”. Just thought it was very interesting that he still has great difficulty giving President Obama credit or accolades.

From the Archives: ‘Move Your Body’ Flash Workout

How do you get kids all around the country to get moving, jumping, and doing the dougie in unison? Beyonce, natch.

On May 3 last year—at 1: 42 p.m. to be exact—nearly 600 schools from coast to coast participated in a flash workout, dancing together to Beyonce’s “Move Your Body.” First Lady Michelle Obama even got in on the fun, joining students at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, D.C. for their rendition of the “Move Your Body” dance. Check it out

So I now officially hate wordpress. There appears to be a default that all comments automatically go to my email. I just cleared out three pages of notifications. My kindle automatically shuts off and when I turn it back on and check TOD I have to make sure I uncheck the box.

However wordpress can just change shit and not notify its users? I’d appreciate a notification of changes. God.

It happened to me too – for the first time today. I’m not sure why wordpress went wild!

    • May 3, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Go to where you put your comment in, underneath that, uncheck that email box.

You will see what I mean.

I know. The point is that I had those boxes unchecked and wordpress decided that I didn’t mean it. Don’t default to that without even a new login without alerting your users.

Votes being counted in local elections across the UK

Votes are being counted across much of the UK in local elections seen as a crucial mid-term test of David Cameron’s coalition government.

More than 4,700 seats are up for grabs on 128 English councils, most of which were last contested in 2008.

The Conservatives have said they fear a “bad night” as Labour expect to make gains across the south and Midlands.

Referendums on elected mayors are being held in 10 English cities, with voters in many expected to reject the idea.

The first results in England and Wales – where all 21 unitary authorities are being fought – are now coming in, with a full national picture of how the parties have done expected to emerge in the early hours.

Labour has held Sunderland, the first result of the night, taking six seats from the Conservatives and the sole Lib Dem seat on the city council.

    Labour Party is doing well

Well, my manager and I just got told to “fuck off and die” by an irate patron that we’ve banned. So, in honor of the rather jocular mood I’m in, a little Twisted Sister for the congregation.

No, no, although he did come in as well. We’ve had trouble with this patron before. Basically, she hates people and hangs out in the fiction stacks. That’s annoying to begin with, but she eats back there, and makes a mess of things. My manager told her that if we caught her eating there again she’d be kicked out. I and one of the pages caught her yesterday. I kicked her out for the day, and my manager just banned her this afternoon after she snuck back in.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s head basketball coach, Shaka Smart will host President Barack Obama kickoff rally at the Siegel Center on Saturday. Smart is one of the most well-known figures in Central Virginia and arguably may be the most popular man Richmond.

Smart has become a beloved Richmond figure, first for guiding the improbable run of the VCU Rams to the Final Four in 2011 and then by twice spurning offers from much bigger programs to remain the head coach at VCU.

The president’s love for college basketball is well-known. He often will attend college basketball games, has a brother-in-law who is a head coach and each year reveals his picks for the NCAA tournament on ESPN.
