I’m not joking—this is on the frontpage of Washpost “Mitt Romney’s aides point to candidate’s lighter side”

“Pressed to reveal the lighter side of Mitt Romney, his advisers on Saturday recalled the time when the former Massachusetts governor had a laugh over a prank involving the purported firing of a chambermaid.”

The story ain’t even the least bit funny…but really?

        April 28, 2012 at 9:23 pm

Yuk, yuk, what a thigh slapper. If you challenged a room full of writers you could not come up with a better example of a stiff, uncomfortable man trying to be funny. I’ve always found something chilling about someone who’s described as a “prankster.” Always indicates there’s a level of cruelty at work.

When will these people learn? You can’t manufacture charisma.

    • April 28, 2012 at 9:11 pm

That Willard, he’s hysterical, ain’t he? A real riot! Seems all his “lighter side” comes in the form of firing people. hahahahahaha—-so funny!

    • 25 anniebella
      April 28, 2012 at 9:20 pm

LOL, Are they trying to show the cooler side of Mitt. I thought being cool was bad.

      • 26 LOL
        April 28, 2012 at 9:27 pm

They know what the eff to do or say. The president is a dictator because he shoved his health care plan down our throats AND he is an appeaser because he goes around apologizing for the U.S. The president is too cool–and that’s bad, but Mitt Romney is cooler because he likes to fire people- but not really.

The president has bought a house in their heads…and they can’t get him out. They must still think they are going up against Frothy and the Angry Teletubby.

If I recall, didn’t he mentioned a few months ago that his father closed a factory or something? It seemed to be hysterical to him.

      Seriously

      He’s freaking weird.

    • April 28, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Reading the whole article, it wasn’t as heartless as it sounded at first. He didn’t tell the chambermaid she was fired or actually complain to her bosses. (I thought at first he had done both those things). The joke was on the trooper. I was kind of surprised that the trooper (do they mean part the the security detail) felt free enough to play around like this. It might show a jokier side to Romney. But basically they picked a story that doesn’t work really well as a sound bite. And even if Romney is a ‘prankster’ he’s still a terrible candidate with terrible ideas for the country.

      • 31 LOL
        April 28, 2012 at 9:53 pm

Oh I know…it just seems everything with him that’s a joke involve someone being fired- real or not. I mean what about any knock knock joke?

        • April 28, 2012 at 9:58 pm

That’s right. If someone else had done it, it wouldn’t have seemed so bad; it’s just in the context of his whole out of touch, rich guy, “I love to fire people” personality it sounds terrible.

  9. April 28, 2012 at 9:08 pm

    April 28, 2012 at 9:13 pm

Even Mitt’s “lighter side” is mean….I read about the “prank” it wasn’t funny. It’s always about someone else’s misfortune with him. And…..it’s ALWAYS about HIM!!!
FLOTUS looks gorgeous as always…..the fabric in that dress is sensational. Why is it that when she’s in the room, everyone else looks well…boring, frumpy, etc.

#WHCD Kimmel did okay. He was pretty nervous and some of the jokes were cruel, but not too over the top.

Plus you can’t please everyone all the time.

    • April 28, 2012 at 10:48 pm

Yeah, I can’t stand Chris Christie but I didn’t like those jokes about him. And I’ve laughed at jokes about his weight before. I wasn’t laughing tonight.

i think he rehearsed it with her, she told him to scrap it, but just like a man, he ignored her advice and did it anyway. Still it was funny and her reaction was so long and sustained that it made it funnier.

I didn’t see FLOTUS reaction to the pit bull joke. But if he was going to bring up Romney’s dog, he had to bring up the part of him eating dog meat.

If we can’t laugh, we’re really done. Jimmy wasn’t the best (Wanda Sykes) and he wasn’t the worst (Don Imus), but he got a lot of good digs in, and the President and First Lady looked like they were laughing the whole time. These are always nerve-wracking, from my POV, so – even though I enjoyed it – I’m glad it’s ohvah!

Not to break WHCD tradition, but a note for next year’s comedian (from somebody who doesn’t get paid to be funny):

“A graceful taunt is worth a thousand insults.” — Louis Nizer

    • April 28, 2012 at 10:54 pm

I saw FLOTUS doing her best not to laugh at those Christie jokes.

Kimmel did get some really good ones in but there were a few that seemed cruel (not the ones aimed at PBO, but others) and I found myself losing interest towards the end until he told the room what some people were saying about the media.

And boy did he look nervous. Sometimes he was going too fast.

    • April 28, 2012 at 10:54 pm

I luv it and look forward to it each year since PBO’s been in. I hafta admit, I didn’t see one of Bush’s. I llike that we can joke around every once and awhile. I like that this stuff don’t have to be taken seriously 24/7/365. It shows us that as much as we wring our hands and gnash our teeth, these folks do what they do…go to work everyday and keep their sponsors happy. They get together once a year like a company picnic and they know that there are no hard feelings.

Agree. I hate to admit what a WHCD junkie I’ve been, but think I saw all of the Bush years and all of the Clinton years, and the only years I truly enjoyed were the PBO years, with 28 more (in dog years) to come! President Obama is the only one who looked like he could “take it.”

    • April 28, 2012 at 11:05 pm

He got in lots of zingers—–some funny ones. But his delivery was so rushed, no sense of timing as they say in the comic biz. President Obama was a million times better in my completely objective opinion—–he was——his material was better, his delivery was like he does that for a living. The worst I ever saw was the Rich Little year——-where they were so horrified by Colbert’s complete skewering of W that they got someone who was so out of touch and so vanilla and not the least bit funny. I don’t think anyone laughed at all. It’s just hard to listen to cruel jokes against our president, but overall—-t’was a fun night.

      • 435 jacquelineoboomer
        April 28, 2012 at 11:24 pm

It’s very, very hard to listen to cruel jokes (or even the slightest put down, in my book) about the President, but at least he expects it and MUST KNOW the people in the audience are mostly scum and he and Michelle are heads and shoulders above them, so he’s rubber and they’re glue, all around. Ha! I’d forgotten about Rich Little – he was forgettable, as you said – both vanilla in his jokes and his delivery AND I think his face had been plastic surgerized so much it was painful to watch. The worst was Don Imus’ talking about Bill’s cheating when both Bill and Hillary were sitting at the head table. (I think one of the President’s best jokes tonight was the one where Hillary won’t stop texting him from another country!)

I never watched the WHCD before PBO. I have to say I’m horrified that the comedian would make jokes about Bill’s cheating with Hillary sitting right beside him. That’s so cruel.
First time I paid any attention to the WHCD was when Steven Colbert did it. I was so PO’d at Bush at the time that I downloaded the podcast and listened to that. Those were the bad old days BPBO

wait. did i really just see that?!? did ed henry just get up there, specifically to accept the position, then immediately complain that he didn’t get a personalized greeting from PBO in the mail?!?! ed seemed genuinely pissed that it said “to whom it may concern” instead of “dear ed.” it didn’t seem like a joke to me, especially with his little “c’mon.” at the end and all the body language thereafter. this loser thinks he deserves a personalized letter from the president?!?! damn.

i don’t have a twitter account so maybe if some of you think it’s a good idea, i propose we try to start a new nickname for ed henry, and that is “to whom it may concern.” that should be his name from now on.

IT’S LONG PAST DUE FOR THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA TO DO IT’S JOB

I have disdain for the mainstream media and the White House Press Corps (aka the jackals). As far as I am concerned, real journalism is dead. I won’t have a modicum of respect for the mainstream media until they take the advice in the Washington Post article below. It’s better late than never, but I can’t understand why it took so long for this article to be written. What is happening with journalism today is a scandal. All Americans should be outraged. We deserve better.

Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.

By thomas Mann and Norm Ornstein

    ——————————-

We understand the values of mainstream journalists, including the effort to report both sides of a story. But a balanced treatment of an unbalanced phenomenon distorts reality. If the political dynamics of Washington are unlikely to change anytime soon, at least we should change the way that reality is portrayed to the public.

Our advice to the press: Don’t seek professional safety through the even-handed, unfiltered presentation of opposing views. Which politician is telling the truth? Who is taking hostages, at what risks and to what ends?

Also, stop lending legitimacy to Senate filibusters by treating a 60-vote hurdle as routine. The framers certainly didn’t intend it to be. Report individual senators’ abusive use of holds and identify every time the minority party uses a filibuster to kill a bill or nomination with majority support.

Look ahead to the likely consequences of voters’ choices in the November elections. How would the candidates govern? What could they accomplish? What differences can people expect from a unified Republican or Democratic government, or one divided between the parties?

the only joke directed at a non-pol i didn’t like was the one about the Kardashians. That was really mean, whether you like them or not. I liked the Chris Christie jokes, the ones directed at PBO was harsher. I winced at those, but I have to say, much as I didn’t like what Jimmy had to say about PBO, Jimmy made sure to give everybody a piece of his mind. I didn’t like the Nancy Smash joke, though, that was pretty bad.

I feel the same way about the Christie joke. I really can’t stand Christie but I thought the joke was totally unnecessary. It was cringe worthy. I think he could have found another way to needle Christie. Like his being a bully for instance. Whatever, I am glad it’s a wrap for the WHCD. PBO always says that Miche makes fun of his ears and that she’s even got the girls doing it too, so it wasn’t surprising that she loved that one. she was a good sport too about Jimmy’s jokes about PBO starving because of her.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47219724/ns/business-us_business/#.T5y1J7Nv9CQ

RENO, Nev. — Apple, the world’s most profitable technology company, doesn’t design iPhones here. It doesn’t run AppleCare customer service from this city. And it doesn’t manufacture MacBooks or iPads anywhere nearby.
Yet, with a handful of employees in a small office here in Reno, Apple has done something central to its corporate strategy: it has avoided millions of dollars in taxes in California and 20 other states.
Apple’s headquarters are in Cupertino, Calif. By putting an office in Reno, just 200 miles away, to collect and invest the company’s profits, Apple sidesteps state income taxes on some of those gains.
California’s corporate tax rate is 8.84 percent. Nevada’s? Zero.
Setting up an office in Reno is just one of many legal methods Apple uses to reduce its worldwide tax bill by billions of dollars each year. As it has in Nevada, Apple has created subsidiaries in low-tax places like Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the British Virgin Islands — some little more than a letterbox or an anonymous office — that help cut the taxes it pays around the world.

    Who are the freeloaders again????

As much as I didn’t find his humor hilarious, Kimmel has a biting humor, and he revealed a lot of truth tonight. Personally, I don’t like comedians making fun of PBO being a one-termer. That gets me a bit angry. Letterman did the same on his show a couple years ago.
