Happy Friday everyone.. I’m really looking forward to seeing/hearing FLOTUS & POTUS together. Looks like they’re arriving now: http://www.thecoastalsource.com/content/livestream/default.aspx

watching the stream on Fox Atlanta that Chips linked to here. It seems that this is going to be a very big event – I had no idea that this many members of the military would be assembled at Fort Stewart today for the speeches by POTUS and FLOTUS

Ft. Stewart is huge.. and hopefully they turned out most of the base. Many years ago when I was in, an event like a President coming would require massive turnout.. I’m hoping thats still the case with our military.

God damn it, just when I thought dKos had gotten its act together to stop Republicans from destroying the country, Obama Derangement Syndrome appears to be back. Well, can’t say I wasn’t warned by my TOD family. The girl who does the excellent diaries on framing — I’ll still read her stuff but I will not subject myself to that b.s. again.

jillwklausen. She has the most amazing series on how to frame our concerns and not buy into right wing frames. Her last diary was about how to more effectively tweet. It’s worth searching for her work on this and cutting and pasting her stuff into a folder for future reference. Go back a few months in the search, although her most recent may link to the rest of the series. It’s vitally important, I think.

        Here’s a link to her latest: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/04/20/1084850/-Tweet-Better-Using-Frames-With-Winning-Words

But if the same insane vitriol continues at dKos, after taking no responsibility for what happened in 2010, then I will do a search for Jill’s work and avoid the rest of dkos’ b.s. This stuff had all but disappeared and has returned with a vengeance the last few days. There’s some serious pushback but I don’t have the energy to fight with these idiots when we have Republicans and Romney to defeat.

My HO – the worst of the lot, led by “that slinker bitch” is too neurotic to care about.

As you said below, my personality has completely lightened up since leaving there. I would not return, even if paid. Misery loves company and HS failures, that is the underpinning there, dressed up as “liberal” politics. And I will never sanction a racist blog. I remember 2010-11 well.

          • April 27, 2012 at 1:37 pm

“slinker B” has a telling history: during the 2008 general, she was one of the biggest chicken littles, constantly opining how PBO was doing it wrong. Then, after PBO won, she was one who absolutely believed that she had a say in every single appointment and got on Ariana Huffington’s bandwagon in her campaign against Geitner . After that she was a paid shill of firebagger owner in chief, Jane Hamsher. BTW, she also recced the awful emoprog diary that made yesterday’s rec list.

Ditto twice! The horrible way that BWD, TiMT, Adept2U, Sistahspeak, Deaniac & others were treated was the last straw for me. In the last days I was only going to the community diaries anyway. I was sorry to leave the “Pooties” because I’m a huge animal lover & was a rescue person until my allergies got too bad but I have found other blogs where I can indulge myself with animal pics & talk about all creatures both great & small.

I haven’t been back there for two years & will never give them the site hits again. IMHO, they are a cesspit. The very fact that Slinker toy & her posse continued on after so many good people left should be a valuable warning to all.

Also, the other thing that frosted my old buns was how so many tried to undermine and demoralize those of us dedicated to GOTV for 2010. I say FIG them up twice & sideways. We do not need their sorry caca anymore. They are irrelevant!

I feel the same way, 57. Obviously, the emoprogs are staging an attempted coup to retake kos…right when it’s needed the most. The totally emoprog diary on the rec. list yesterday was recced by none other than MB himself. It really bummed me out. I actually thought some maturity had caught on with progressives and they FINALLY understood how to see the big picture. It was like zero to 100 with this shit. I fought too long and hard the last time. I really don’t have that kind of energy anymore.

I wandered back there at the beginning of the primaries because they had good liveblog coverage and things were so much better. Like when I first joined in 2007. We need absolutely every single vote in this election, and none of this b.s. gets them any closer to their alleged goals.

It was to be expected. No question that an election year stirs up passion, and the ego of ideologs. But don’t forget that there is surely a fresh contingent of republican operatives there. The GOP primary is over and Romney has shifted his focus towards the general election. They will use every dirty trick in the book. Creating division within the democratic coalition is obviously one of their priorities. It will be almost funny to witness a big resurgence of anti-Obama diaries on the “Orange”.

You’re absolutely right. I understand it, I’m resigned to it but I don’t have to like it! I know a good deal of it is just trouble-making and I won’t be distracted by it. Too much to do.

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt (The Five Year Engagement) just told cute, endearing stories about meeting President Obama at the WH on The View. Segel said Obama greeted him with “Jason Segel! I Love You Man” —-Segel’s film name—-and he said he blubbered back “I love you too” and then blurted out something about his Muppets movie, that Obama should come to the showing, that there was going to be Free Snacks!” Both said they were so freaked out. Blunt said that President Obama greeted her by telling her she was a great actress and she said she just started laughing hysterically out of nervousness, like a fool. Both very cute about it and obviously big fans of our pres.

A short and somewhat sad story about Fort Stewart. My son served there priro to and post his tour in Iraq. They had a special area devoted to a memorial for those lost in Iraq. They would plant a tree for each soldier lost with a plaque at the base. Originally they had a lot of space between the trees. Unfortunately, they ended up having to plant a lot more trees than they initially planned on. On one of our trips to visit him post tour, he took us to walk through the memorial. Another officer was with us and she said, with obvious bitterness, that all of these soldiers had died in vain. My son’s response was telling. He said, “No, they didn’t die in vain. They died protecting the rest of us who were over there.” What is noteworthy is what he didn’t say.

I just watched that video of the gay veteran asking Romney about his support – or lack thereof! – of marriage equality in NH, and I’m so angry! Thank god there’s no one who can hear me screaming from where I am, because I’m screaming: “I hate these motherfucking motherfuckers!!!” What the fuck is the difference? Huh? Romney says it was pretty clear when the constitution was written that marriage was between a man and a woman. Clear to whom? Where the fuck does it say that in the constitution?! No where! All men are created EQUAL! All men. Not all heterosexual men. Not all white men. Not all rich men. ALL MEN! Aaaggghhhh!!!!!

    • 76 jackiegrumbacher
      April 27, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Hachiko, Romney is an ignorant man and his statement was a prime example of stupid. First, the Constitution doesn’t mention marriage because the men writing it could not have imagined why the federal government would have a role in what was essential a religious rite. Second, the Constitution was never meant to be set in stone , which is why it has a process for amendments. The writers were smart and they knew times would change. Third, time do change. The original constitution doesn’t include the right for women to vote or for men of color to be counted as full men. Does that mean we should have gone along forever without amending that? I honestly don’t think Romney even thinks before he talks.

The speech that Vice President Biden gave yesterday was immensely satisfying. It was so great to see him go after Romney’s lies and debunk each one of them. But I have to say, my favorite section was on Iran. I am sick of all of the loose talk about war with Iran. VP Biden’s challenge to Romney to state exactly what he means about what he would do as it relates to Iran was spot on. If he wants to go to war with Iran then he should say so to the American people. Of course, it wouldn’t occur to anyone in the mainstream media to ask that simple question. Because a question like that would brand them as a “liberal” by the GOP. And that’s the one thing the msm can not abide.

Romney Uses ‘Cold War Prism,’ Biden Says in Foreign Policy Attack

The vice president walked through the major national-security challenges of the Obama presidency, contending that where Mr. Romney disagreed with the president, his positions were prone to reversals, and where his views did not differ from the president’s — as on Iran, Mr. Biden argued — Mr. Romney distorted the facts.

Saying that the president and Mr. Romney have both called for crippling sanctions on Iran, backed up by a threat to use military force, to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, Mr. Biden said, “It’s hard for me to understand what the governor means by a very different policy” — unless, he added, it means going to war.

“If that’s what Governor Romney means by a very different policy,” Mr. Biden said, “he should tell the American people.”

Yvette Clarke, New York Rep., Notifies Police After Video Of Her Surfaces On Breitbart, Beck Sites

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) notified the Capitol Police Thursday after receiving threatening phone calls, after a video of her appearing to criticize the Tea Party was posted on several conservative websites, according to a release from her office.

The video was first posted to Breitbart TV, created by the late conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart, and then picked up by Glenn Beck’s website, The Blaze.

The video shows Clarke speaking at a candidate forum organized by Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform.

“When I say dealing with the Tea Party, they came up in the hundreds of thousands. So we couldn’t walk outside of our office without tripping over Tea Party members. And these are individuals that had no problems with racial epithets, they had no problem with cursing, spitting and everything else, they came to intimidate members out of passing the Affordable Care Act,” says Clarke in the video.

There’s then a cut in the video, one of four in nearly two and a half minutes. “But the moment that they came in and really just showed the ugliest sides of the United States of America, you can imagine — it was clear to me that we were doing the right thing for Americans.”

House Republicans investigating the Fast and Furious scandal have gotten the go-ahead by their party leaders to pursue a contempt citation against Attorney General Eric Holder, senior congressional aides told CBS News. The resolution will accuse Holder and his Justice Department of obstructing the congressional probe into the allegations that the government let thousands of weapons fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

A few weeks ago, UP With Chris Hayes had columnist Gary Younge on to discuss the National Riffle Association Convention. He said there was an undercurrent of extreme fear about their gun rights. He attended a breakout session where they discussed the four most dangerous people to the NRA cause. They were President Obama, Attorney General Holder, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Justice Sonya Sotomayor. The Republicans have been trying to take down Attorney General Holder from day one. Their problem with him is that he is doing what Alberto Gonzalex never did, he is doing his job.

“Partisan Spin Denies Obama Credit for Immigration Success

Obama has used increased funding and enforcement to slow illegal immigration through our southern border to a trickle, but Mitt Romney and conservatives have responded with silence—or more attacks about a lack of border security.”

Rachel did a good job last evening naming names of Bush foreign policy guys who now are now on Mitt’s crew of foreign policy advisors. Something like 19 out of 22 or about. Why would we ever want to go back to those failed policy days? We are so much better positioned now with the foreign policy of this President. Also saw the study showing waterboarding didn’t produce any information. What it did do is tarnish our reputation in the world. We were supposed to behave better then that, especially as a Christian nation. What is it about the Evangelical Christians that makes them so thrilled about capital punishment, torture etc. Maybe it’s a sexual thing. I’m not too upset about the farm child labor thing–it’s one of those win some lose some deals. I think the fallout from the far right would have hurt the President’s campaign. It would have been portrayed as a bill that would keep a kid from going out and collecting the eggs on his family farm. Even though it was not intended to keep kids from working on a relatives farm–it would have been exploited as too much regulation. The dreaded hand of govt. reaching into private lives–never mind the tranvaginal probes REALLY reaching into privates.

Chips, if you get a chance to see review the video of this event at Fort Stewart, I thought I saw FLOTUS use sign language again as she and PBO shook hands with those assembled. I was watching the CNN stream and this exchange occurred at a time stamp ranging from 1.11 to 1.13 p.m.

I do not know if I am right but these clips would do good for the outreach to voters with similar challenges. I do not know if we ever had a POTUS and FLOTUS who both knew how to use sign language

    • 172 Janelle

I was watching it on C-Span, and FLOTUS’ signing was very clearly seen on their coverage—-when it posts, you should view it on C-Span. I also heard a female soldier or other person yell out something to PBO right before the signing, and he yelled back, “I love you too babe”. He always seems happier when he gets to do events with the First Lady. It made me smile.

Jay Carney is a sweetheart. He was D.C. Bureau Chief of TIME Magazine in 2008 but left to work for the WH under VP Biden before Pres. Obama asked him to become his Press Sec and he says he left his job not because he was unsatisfied but because the 2008 election and Pres. Obama winning the election was very personal for him and through serendipity when the opportunity came to work for the WH under VP Biden, he didn’t think twice about leaving his high powered job at TIME because he so admires and respects Pres. Obama. The event is happening LIVE NOW

I agree with you, Tien Lee, in that he is not always negative. But, when he is he is utterly outright lying. There is no middle ground given to any of these so-called journalists, not from me, when reporting on the importance of the Presidency, what it holds for the future health of a nation, and ultimately the intergrity of real journalism. If they are not fit to be consistently truthful, and not offering opinion, then they need to be hammered as fiercely as they put out innuendo. Just my 2 cents.

    Bipartisanship never stood a chance

    By Steve Benen

As Jamelle Bouie explained, “In other words, there was nothing President Obama could have done to build common ground with Republicans. From the beginning, the plan was to relentlessly obstruct Obama, regardless of whether that was good for the country The GOP’s high-minded rhetoric of compromise and bipartisanship was bunk.”

With this in mind, for all that is good and holy in this world, can we please stop pretending that “both sides” are to blame for the failure of the parties to cooperate in Washington?

Now that the general election is in full swing, both campaigns are in the midst of a ceaseless push to articulate their message, engaging reporters on conference calls, on Twitter and in appearances with crowds and on TV, as each candidate jockeys to gain an upper hand in the press, and by extension, the media.

Campaign conference calls are one tool both parties use to offer up unchecked talking points and allow surrogates to tout their candidates’ message. But for Mitt Romney, those calls have often done more harm than good, either throwing the campaign message off track, showcasing a lack of preparation to field basic questions on Romney’s positions, or both.

Instead of trumpeting the candidate’s accomplishments and vision, the calls have to varying degrees shot the campaign in the foot.

Fox Contributor Apologizes For ‘Homophobic’ Tweet About Sandra Fluke |

Fox News contributor Monica Crowley has issued an apology to Sandra Fluke for a crass tweet that Crowley sent out from her account yesterday about the Georgetown Law student’s sexual orientation. “I certainly & unequivocally apologize to Sandra & anyone else I offended. Not my intention,” wrote Crowley on Twitter. Mediaite flagged Crowley’s apology, which came after a 24 hour maelstrom of criticism capped by a strong condemnation from the Georgetown Law student herself, who called Crowley’s initial tweet “hate speech” and “homophobic” on MSNBC last night.

Charles Pierce does some of the best snark on the internet, but occassionally, amongst the snark is some absolutely great serious writing. Today, in a post on Rubio, which is as usual filled with snark, he wrote what he considers it means to become an American. Left me breathless:

To me, you become an American when you acknowledge within yourself that the country doesn’t belong to you. That it is something held in common by the Italian butcher, and the French-Canadian mechanic, and the Irish cop from a parish different from yours. That it is something that will be held in common by the Cambodian store owner and the Salvadoran kid whose parents went through the hell at the border to get him here, and who grew up and became a Marine, and who now works stocking shelves for the Cambodian guy while he waits for the country he served to get around to deciding if there is a piece of it he can have. You become an American, finally, when you admit there are other Americans, and that these Americans build their own personal Americas of the mind and of the heart, and that they do it through what they brought here from countries far away.

“Michelle Obama is the best thing that Washington, D.C., has seen in a long time,” he said, speaking of her well-documented love of fashion and the wide range of designers she has favored over the last three years. “It’s a whole new era at the White House now — it’ll probably be never like that again — and we wanted to make it current. Plus, Julia loves Michelle Obama.”

Disputing a CBS report, a Republican leadership aide told TPM that House Speaker John Boehner has made “no decision” about whether the House will take up a contempt resolution against Attorney General Eric Holder. Republicans, led by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), have alleged that the Justice Department has obstructed a congressional probe into ATF’s botched ”Fast and Furious” operation.

“While there are very legitimate arguments to be made in favor of such an action, no decision has been made to move forward with one by the Speaker or by House Republican leaders,” the aide told TPM.

I heard a few clips and he was ridiculous: “Obama says we’re declaring a war on children. Give me a break!”

But you are, you unmitigated asshole. Subsidies to the largest profit-whores in history — can’t touch that to make student loans affordable. But calling a fund that provides immunizations and screenings a ‘slush fund’ — let’s bankrupt that.

      God, I hate these guys.

    Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, Vol. XV

    By Steve Benen

After winning several more presidential primaries this week, Mitt Romney delivered a speech his campaign billed as the unofficial kickoff of the general election. And while making his pitch as the presumptive Republican nominee, the former governor said President Obama intends to “run a campaign of … distortions.”

I very nearly fell out of my chair. After watching Romney closely for years, I’ve never seen any candidate in either party run a campaign of distortions as shamelessly as this guy, and this claim seemed to take the “I’m rubber, you’re glue” tactic to new levels.

To appreciate the scope of Romney’s distortions, consider the 15th installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt’s mendacity.

    Hi Folks,

I see on CNN that POTUS is addressing the Women’s Conference at 4.50pm.

  82. April 27, 2012 at 4:11 pm

According to a poll released late last week, 61 percent of college-age Millennials (the futuristic-sounding name given to the generation born in the late 1980s and early 1990s) are registered to vote, but only 46 percent say that they will likely do so in November. By way of comparison, in 2008, 58.5 percent of the same age group was registered to vote, and 48 percent of them actually did.

via BJ, when even the rw shill wapo sez this ….

We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

//….The New York Times reports that two conservative House Democrats — Reps. Jason Altmire and Tim Holden of Pennsylvania — lost their primaries earlier this week largely because of their opposition to health reform. So they might well have lost their seats to Republicans in November 2010 had they supported the bill. Instead, they lost their seats to other Democrats because they voted against it. Sucks to be them.

    • April 27, 2012 at 4:28 pm

This should be a bitter lesson for those small ‘d’ Democrats.

    • April 27, 2012 at 4:36 pm

They could have run on the fact that they banned rescissions or that a rebate check was on the way or that this is going to be a major job creator in their district. Instead they came back home empty handed and the voters let them know that was not acceptable. Good.

In Holden’s case, he would have lost his old seat if he voted for ACA, but not his newly redistricted one. He’s been leaning right for so long, he didn’t know how to compete in a real Democratic district. He was horrible on health care. I went to see him with a small group and his mind was totally closed to even considering the benefits that the health care bill would bring. He simply didn’t care because it would cost him his seat in his R leaning district. So this was Karma coming back for her bite.

Mittmentum at work… bored students at his “lecture” (video incl)

///…At a “lecture” for students at Otterbein University in Ohio today, Mitt Romney told students that, his friend, Jimmy John, started a business by borrowing $20,000 from his parents at a low interest rate. Romney suggested anyone in the audience could do the same:

This kind of devisiveness, this attack of success, is very different than what we’ve seen in our country’s history. We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.

The same father who when my mother sent him to town to buy clothes for himself came back with clothes for us and not a thing for himself.
