Human warmth ….. watch and learn, Romney

TPM: A lesser-known but important provision in “Obamacare” that regulates how health insurance companies spend their money is yielding benefits for consumers, a new study finds.

By this August, insurers are projected to send consumers a total of $1.3 billion in rebates, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis released Thursday – $541 million to large employers, $377 million to small businesses and $426 million to people with their own insurance plans.

The rebates are the result of a rule in the Affordable Care Act that requires insurance companies to spend at least 80 percent or 85 percent of premium earnings on health care – as opposed to marketing and administrative activities – or otherwise provide rebates to their consumers.

Steve Benen: Joe Weisenthal published a pretty remarkable chart today noting economic growth in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe over the last nine years….

…. Once President Obama took office and the Recovery Act/stimulus began putting capital back into the economy, the U.S. economy began growing again. In the U.K., the economy started to improve, right up until British officials began implementing an austerity agenda – at which point the national economy stagnated and slipped back into a recession.

Obama rejected austerity, and as a result, American growth, while fragile and insufficient, is easily outpacing Europe’s and UK’s, where austerity measures have ruled the day.

….When David Cameron’s austerity policies began, Republicans were not only certain they would work, they pleaded with American policymakers to follow the Tories’ lead …. The remarkable thing is, Republicans aren’t the least bit chastened by the track record of failure.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will visit Fort Stewart Friday …. The event will not be open to the general public according to the White House.

No other details were available except that the president and first lady will “meet with troops, veterans and military families”.

President Obama has announced 13 new recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom:

Madeleine Albright, John Doar, Bob Dylan, William Foege, John Glenn, Gordon Hirabayashi, Dolores Huerta, Jan Karski, Juliette Gordon Low, Toni Morrison, Shimon Peres, John Paul Stevens, Pat Summitt.

ThinkProgress: …. The Romney campaign organized a conference call today with three of Romney’s foreign policy advisers to push back (against VP Biden’s foreign policy speech). During the call, Romney adviser Ambassador Pierre Prosper attacked President Obama for dealing with Russia, albeit using geographical terms from the Cold War era:

PROSPER: ….. The United States abandoned its missile defense sites in Poland and Czechoslovakia….

Aside from the fact that “Czechoslovakia” broke up into the Czech Republic and Slovakia nearly 20 years ago, the Obama administration never “abandoned” missile defense sites because they were never there to begin with….

Michael Tomasky: It seems clear that the main issue Mitt Romney is going to use to try to reestablish himself as a moderate is immigration …. Can Romney, who staked out an immigration position during the primaries that left him sounding like Pat Buchanan, really pull this off? My bet: He’ll be smooth, he’ll do almost everything right, he’ll say all the right things — and he’ll end up with something very much like the 31 percent of the Latino vote John McCain got, maybe two or three points more, tops. The reason is simple: Romney, like his party, is just too white.

…. There is no signal, at least yet, that Rubio would make a whit of difference. Last weekend, a poll came out in which 1,000-plus Latinos were asked about Obama-Biden matchups against Romney-Rubio, and Romney paired with various other Hispanic Republicans ….. in Florida, Obama did better among Latinos against Romney with Rubio on the ticket, suggesting that maybe to know him isn’t to love him.

NYT: The group Americans for Prosperity just went up with a $6.1 million ad buy in swing states that accuses the Obama administration of squandering American taxpayer dollars on green energy projects, asserting that some of the money actually went to foreign entities….

In making the general assertion that “billions of taxpayer dollars spent on green energy went to jobs in foreign countries,” the ad cites as evidence $1.2 billion that went “to a solar company that’s building a plant in Mexico.” In fact, the company involved in the plant, SunPower, said that the $1.2 billion federal loan guarantee was for its solar ranch in California….

The ad also says that the Obama administration sent “half a billion to an electric car company that created hundreds of jobs in Finland.” …. Loans under the agency’s alternative vehicle program went to Fisker Automotive, an American electric car company based in California that has facilities in Finland, as well as China and Germany. The agency provided $169 million for engineering and tooling work, all carried out in the United States….

Yeah, I knew…. I don’t understand why people can’t just do films of THE STORIES as a whole, without ADDING shit…. as if Edgar Allen Poe’s tales don’t hold up ON THEIR OWN. Seriously. Yes, they’re all short stories, but SO WHAT? The Premature Burial or The Black Cat would make an amazing film, and they wouldn’t have to add Ligeia, or Fall of Usher….. I don’t know…. NO ONE has done a proper Pit & The Pendulum EVER. [steps off Poe Purity Platform]

I’ll probably watch it when it comes on cable, and I’m not watching Game of Thrones again for the bazillionth time. 😀

Great round-up! VP Biden’s foreign policy speech was awesome. Romney is so consistently wrong on everything. A failed Governor; relied on US funds for Olympics; least public service of any presidential candidate ever; and record as vulture capitalist and entitled 0.01%, interested primarily in lining his own coffers. Shame on us if we don’t all organize and GOTV for a landslide. I have noted in talking with many women that I see (all ages) in a relatively conservative part of our county that all are fired up and outraged at the GOP war on women. Many of the older women remember a time when women died from illegal abortions. Although jobs and the economy are part of the equation the GOP is wrong on pretty much everything and I think we can all make that case.

It baffles me how the GOP thinks putting Rubio on the ticket will do anything. That’s like Mitt putting Allen West or somebody on the ticket to try can get more black votes. It won’t happen. Actually, I think it’s insulting… to think Latinos are that fickle.

    • 54 itgurl_29
      April 26, 2012 at 7:08 pm

It is insulting. Just like when the Illinois GOP put up Alan Keys against Barack Obama. And when McCain threw Palin on the ticket thinking women would flock to vote for him. And now they’re looking to offend Latinos with Rubio. Just because you’re my color doesn’t you’re my kind. Just because we’re the same gender doesn’t mean you’re my kind either. They don’t understand minorities and women. They think we’re all alike and that we’re a bunch of idiots.

Yes, we all know how that worked for Palin and those disaffected Hillary voters…it’s the media and they’re simplification of everything. Hey, he’s brown..that means all the brown people will vote for him. Almost as moronic as the “Is Obama black enough” ramblings.

The genius and wonder of our President is his willingness, no eagerness to enter into our world. All of our world. He doesn’t demand that we enter his reality. He joins us in ours. In our languages. Attempting to look through our eyes and walk in our shoes.
This can’t be taught or faked. This is why the GOP is in despair.

  18. April 26, 2012 at 6:59 pm

Mr. Dotster is a CPA and I happened to mention that Romney gave his sons $100 million and paid no gift tax, a story that floated around recently and then faded away. He was real interested in the mechanics of that deal, and so I found a Reuters article written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Cay Johnston which explains the legal ——a tax loophole—-that allows this transaction. I’m out of my element here, but this is the rich getting richer with the help of top tax lawyers—–legal but immoral. Everything about Romney seems geared toward personal enrichment—-solely. And there are many interesting comments——a suggestion that the writer nudge 60 Minutes on this story—–and someone else had all the details of the shenanigans played by Romney in his multi million dollar gifts to the LDS church—-that this needs to be investigated, and asked if Bain was in part a front for laundering money for the Mormon Church. I happened to remember that there were complaints recently that former Bain employees said they were fired for not being Mormon. There is so much that needs to be investigated with Willard and his money. And as someone said, “Democracies can’t survive full-blown aristocrats with the ability to fund endless generations.”

President Obama and the first lady will greet soldiers in Hinesville, Ga., Friday at a time when his reelection campaign is focused more intently than ever on a novel and potentially fruitful voter set: military families.

On Thursday, Vice President Biden delivered a speech in which he made clear that the president’s record winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — contrasted with Republican Mitt Romney’s position of wanting to stay longer in both countries — would be a central argument of the reelection campaign.

The message from both Obama and Biden is clear: They will campaign on the president’s foreign policy record and actions to bolster services for veterans while aggressively criticizing Romney on the same subjects — and issuing pointed examples of the Republican’s lack of proposals to assist returning veterans and their families.

While the media & the GOP have decided to frame everything as a political move, I choose to believe – based on past behavior – that the President and First Lady are greeting the troops because it’s the right and honourable thing to do. The President has said on many occasions that “the right policy is the right politics”. He’s not doing this for a political stunt. He believes the troops deserve respect and gratitude.

The cynicism of the media and the GOP to paint every gesture as a political ploy reflects their own shortcomings. I refuse to join them in that game. I’ll simply appreciate the hearts of these two good people. Period.

A secure communications channel set up to prevent misunderstandings that might lead to nuclear war is likely to expand to handling new kinds of conflict — in cyberspace.

The Nuclear Risk Reduction Center, established in 1988 under President Ronald Reagan so that Washington and Moscow could alert each other to missile tests and space launches that could be mistaken as acts of aggression, would take a central role in an agreement nearing completion between U.S. and Russian negotiators.

Most key elements of the deal, which could be final in several weeks, are settled, said U.S. officials familiar with the talks.

Hi Everyone! Wow! Chips, you just freaked me out!!

We must be on some sort of psychic connection or something today. I just ran across Paul McCartney’s new video for his song “My Valentine”. It features Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp reciting the song’s lyrics in sign language and it made me think of PBO’s exchange a few weeks back with that young man. I thought ” This is so lovely and soothing. I should go share this with my TOD family.”

Well, lo and behold! I come over to TOD and you’ve got that video of the President signing on the front page. My mouth just dropped to the floor! You are just AWESOME!!! God, I love this blog!!

    * Karl Rove is out with his first analysis of the 2012 electoral map. He’s pretty optimistic about President Obama’s chances, giving the incumbent a solid lead in 18 states and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney a solid lead in only 15. Interestingly, he has South Carolina, a state Obama lost by nine points in 2008, listed as a “toss-up.” Lest you think he’s just revving up Republicans, Rove was pretty accurate in 2008. But he’s also going to update his map as we get closer to the actual election.

The head of the largest federal employees union sent a scathing letter to Mitt Romney after the Republican presidential candidate made disparaging remarks about federal pay.

After essentially clinching the Republican nomination on Tuesday, Romney said “We will stop the unfairness of government workers getting better pay and benefits than the taxpayers they serve.”

That comment roiled the American Federation of Government Employees.

“You know what’s really unfair?” AFGE President John Gage wrote to Romney. “The specter of having a new boss who thinks so little about the work that you do that he can’t bother getting his facts straight before making the ridiculous and patently false claim.”

      April 26, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Hey auni! I think you and Vicki have hit on a new theme for OFA (or maybe one of the superPACs): “You can’t learn that – it comes from the heart.”

Character is what counts. Politicians like Romney say whatever they think will soothe the audience in front of them today and the complete opposite to the next one tomorrow. You can never really know what’s in a person’s heart by what they say. It’s their actions — how they speak to be people, how they treat people, how they work with people — that allow you a glimpse into someone’s soul.

You spend time with a person, you watch them, you listen to them — that’s how you get to know them. I think it’s how we should pick our mates, it’s our we should pick our leaders. This is why I’m not bothered at all by the lengthy campaign season. It gave America the chance (the time) to see who he really is in 2008 and this time around it gives those who need it, the time to make thoughtful comparison between the President and his opponent.

There are tons of examples — photo and video over the years — that tell you so much about the kind of person our President is. The way he holds babies, the way he looks people in the eye when he’s speaks to them and when they speak to him, the tenderness and compassion he shows people who are in pain, fist bumping the cleaning crew, stopping to appreciate the beauty of the earth and the heavens, his ability to bring humor and grace where others couldn’t, championing the arts and praising artists, the way he closed his eyes to let Yo Yo Ma’s genius wash over him during the Inauguration, the way he reacted to all the love the entire country of Ireland heaped on him and Mrs. O (when he practically rubbed her arm raw), the way he conducts himself as Commander In Chief and the way he demonstrates in word and deed his deep abiding love for his family and this country.

Put them together in a gallery, a slideshow, an ad … something, so some of the less observant can REALLY see.
Somebody, please. Go forth, run with it… WE NEED TO SHOW THE WORLD WHY WE LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH!

Pat Toomey is a stain on the state, isonprize. And he had to freaking nerve to claim that Joe Sestak was too radical for PA. It angers me that we have to endure four more years of his foulness. And we darned well better have a strong Dem candidate ready to take him on and win in 2016.

I wish someone would ask Shame Hannity if he plans to get out of the catholic church for the priest who raped children? He wants to condemn PBO for staying at a church because of what his paster said, what about what those priest did to children. At least Rev Wrights words did not harm anyone but Rev Wright.

So I’m not the only one who received the Romney email. I wrote back via the contact page and told them to remove me from the email list. I also told them I was not a Republican, I would NOT vote for Romney and did not want to “grab a bite” with Ann. Then, I told them he is the worst candidate I’ve ever seen, and I’m 72 years old. About a half hour later I received a reply telling me they were sorry and would remove me from the list. They also said it might take a while to complete the digital work…..????? My son would do it with one click! How far backward are they? If they send me another one I will write again. It was fun.

I’m one of the women of a certain age who remembers the basement abortion clinics and the totally wrecked lives and deaths. Any woman old enough to remember that and be honest will be against the Republicans. When I tell my college girls that this used to be the case, they are horrified. They need to know so we don’t go back to that!!!

I was speaking with an RN yesterday who is fired up due to GOP war on women. When she first started working years ago she took care of a horribly deformed child, severely mentally and physically disabled, in long-term care due to an unsuccessful coat hanger abortion. Making it illegal just pushes it underground. Women will die.

Alright guys, I asked in the other thread, but I’m ask in this one cause I really need the advice.

So it looks like I’m going to be off all next week. I’m seriously thinking about driving home to NOLA. I’m feenin’ for a visit.

So my friend was telling me that I should call the place where I applied for a job and see if I could possibly set up an in person interview since I will be in town. She said it will show them that I am serious about he job, plus they could either say yes and then I’d wow ’em in person (I’m even better in person and one on one than I am online, trust me) or they could say no/tell me that the postion has been filled.

Initially, I was asking when is a good lenght of time to call about a position after the interview, but now since I might be in town, I think I should go ahead and call.

What do ya’ll think? Should I just wait until they call? The phone interview happened on April 11th. What do ya’ll think?

      April 26, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I say call. Tell them that you have occasion to be in town and would love the opportunity to speak to them in person for an interview 🙂 Just my 2 cents!

    • April 26, 2012 at 8:45 pm

My daughter had a telephone and personal interview and it’s been about a week. She asked me the same thing, if she should call. I told her to wait one more week, then either call and thank them for taking the time to interview her and to let them know she appreciated the opportunity to get to know more about their company. I suggested she figure out a way to let them know her eagerness to become a productive member of their team and that she is available and look forward to embarking on a new mutually beneficial venture with them. Can’t hurt as long as it’s about the thank you.

    • 160 nospin
      April 26, 2012 at 8:51 pm

call. it doesn’t hurt especially given the circumstances (you will be in town).

    • April 26, 2012 at 8:56 pm

Did you ask them what their decision timeframe was?

      • 162 lamh35
        April 26, 2012 at 9:12 pm

I talked to the recruiter during a phone interview. She asked basic questions about why I wanted the job, my experiences working, scenarios about what I would do it…stuf like that. I asked her what comes next and she said she forwards my answers in the phone interview to the Lab Management and from there they will decide if they would take my submission any further. The job posting is no longer on the website, and they stopped taking submissions for the position on April 16th I think.

The recruiter did NOT say that they would notify me if I am no longer being considered. They only other notification would come if the Lab management wanted to take it further.

        • April 26, 2012 at 9:34 pm

That’s a tough spot to be in, waiting and waiting and not being sure about the outcome. Sometimes things get bogged down when hirings are done by committee. Paperwork gets passed around and meetings have to get scheduled based on availability. Sometimes people are out of town. That’s why I always ask about when they expect a decision because it can drive you crazy waiting for the phone to ring. I’m sorry you are going through this! But if you want to cut to the chase, give them a call and just say you will be in town and would love to meet the group at their convenience. Good luck!

This is so heart wrenching what is happening in Michigan and the emergency managers.

    • April 26, 2012 at 9:23 pm

I believe the folks in Michigan are gathering signatures to get overturning this act on the ballot. It’s why they didn’t want for the Detroit leaders to vote for some ruling that would have interfered with the overturn movement. I’m not sure, I heard it on the radio as I was driving and I missed the background about what they were doing to overturn this emergency manager provision for the entire state. It is crazy though, that this would have been put in place to begin with. Many times folks don’t realize what getting out and voting means, until it’s too late. Down ticket voting is just as important as the big presidential elections. Hopefully, what’s happening in Mich. since 2010 will get folks to the polls in 2012.

It’s pure BS. The “problem” with this particular Democrat, is that he doesn’t play by their rules. The tried that shit with Gore and it worked, by making him out to be some awkward know it all- so Gore tried to play down his intelligence. They tried that shit with Kerry and his military service, so Kerry tried to play it down. While Shrub was in Alabama, Kerry was actually fighting for his country.

      .
But that is what Rove does, tries to use your strength against you. And the GOP knows that PBO is likeable, and if you are likeable, you can persuade people to vote for you. So they trot out the celebrity BS and the taxpayer campaign trip BS to get the President to retrieve and stop talking to the American people without the MSM filter.

    • April 26, 2012 at 9:52 pm

They hate because they know this truth: The more people see of Pres.Obama the more they like him.

And if the people like him the harder it is to smear him with their lies. The same does not hold for their ilk and their candidate Mitt Romney.

If I am still being considered, I just wanted to let you know that I will be in the city the middle of next week to visit family and I am available for an in-person interview if they would like to schedule one.”

Tweak that anyway ya’ll like, I’m taking suggestions for better phrasing…

Notice all the people complaining are melanin deprived people of a certain age. They do NOT understand young people. This visit with Jimmy Fallon will do more to stimulate the 18-29 vote than anything else. That youtube clip has had, how many hits? It will have more. They are mad, because there is NOONE on their side who can relate to young people. I am not hip, nor am I cool, but I love my college freshmen and they keep me aware and don’t allow me to atrophy. I am their grandomothers’ age, and all kids love their grandmas, so we have a great time, and I listen and learn a lot. Our President “gets” them, and they “get him. That is why the right is so angry!
