And then last night on Fallon – the ultimate President, all rolled in to one – brains, wit, looks, charm, intelligence beyond words, thoughtful, great singer, and all those accomplishments for the people of the USA! Go for 3!!!

Looking forward to President Obama appearing in my old stomping grounds today, which is in Iowa City, clueless Mark Knoller. I remember thinking I had died and gone to heaven when I arrived on that campus—-had a glorious 4 years there—-loved that experience and that university and that community, great liberal institution.

THE BIGGEST LIE IN AMERICAN POLITICS

    By Bob Cesca

    ————————-

So why all the fuss and panic?

For starters, far-right Republicans have been trying to kill Social Security since it was established during the Depression. It’s socialistic commie pinko welfare, they say in private. And so they act like the world’s most duplicitous concern trolls by exploiting minor setbacks and lying about “bad news” in order to sell their unbelievably stupid privatization plan — a massive giveaway to corporate America. They twist logic and pretend to “rescue” Social Security by disbanding it — investing the trust fund in the totally safe and never unstable stock market.

They’ve been so good at framing and branding unmitigated fiction about this issue that they’ve successfully shoved the broader discussion well beyond reality into some kind of brutally dishonest phantom zone where “full benefits for 20 years, and much longer if we tweak the payroll tax” means, “OMFG! Social Security is DOOOOOMED! AAAAAAAHHH!” If they’re not pitching their awful privatization scam, they’re deliberately undermining the system by proposing things like raising the retirement age or cutting benefits. Both of these ideas only manage to hurt old people while simultaneously breeding disillusionment about the reliability of Social Security among younger people.

I just finished reading the Rolling Stone interview and man oh man PBO is more than ready for 2012 to begin. Can’t wait for that first campaign rally and for Romney to finally receive the nomination so PBO can go full throttle.

One post listed the Iowa DOT Interstate cameras that will supposedly let you watch the motorcade travel down I380 and I80 into Iowa City (under the “Cameras and Speeds only”, Cedar Rapids/IC) starting with the camera just a little up to the left of Ely (Wright Brothers Blvd). Should be interesting.

Axelrod will be on Andrea Mitcheks Show. Funny thing is, the RNC will now email her loaded and pointed questions. And, like everybody else, she will ask them all, not one question being her own!

The GOP has always been masterful at working the refs. That’s about all they are good at. Governing not so much. They funnel their criticism and outrage at PBO to the sheep in the media and they do their bidding. The GOP and the MSM freak out every time President Obama blows a hole in the media firewall. The latest (look at that shiny object) outrage is about which states President Obama has the audacity to visit. Apparently, there is some imaginary list of politically correct states that PBO is allowed to visit in an election year. The feckless media stenographers line up like sheep to report on the outrage du jour of the Republican Party. Meanwhile, they all look the other way while Mitt Romney crisscrosses the country lying, distorting and making stuff up.

Even though Gibbs is no longer with the Obama administration, he is still very much on message. Top Line asked him to provide Jeopardy-style questions to a couple answers.

Mitt Romney: “What is second place in the general election?” said Gibbs

This is a bill that needed more aggression from the Democrats. These women are the most vulnerable in society, and it would be impossible for the GOP to explain why they would object to extending this, and still deny that they’re waging a war on women. Their hate knows no bounds and has not a shred of morality.

UK Economy Falls Into Recession For First Time Since 2009

LONDON — Britain’s economy has fallen back into recession for the first time since 2009 after official figures Wednesday showed that it unexpectedly contracted during the first three months of the year.

The Office for National Statistics said economic output as measured by gross domestic product fell by 0.2 percent in the first three months of the year from the previous quarter. The first quarter drop follows the 0.3 percent decline recorded in the last quarter of 2011 and means Britain has returned to recession – two consecutive quarters of negative growth are required for a country to be officially deemed to be in recession.

The first quarter decline was unexpected – the consensus in the markets was that the British economy eked out growth, albeit of a modest 0.1 percent.

“The government and the Bank of England needed a sharp shock. They just got it,” said Marcus Bullus, trading director at MB Capital in London.

House GOP Napping on the Job

    By Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

    —————————————

Apparently, the “Do-Nothing-But-Harm” House Republican Congress is planning to rest after voting to end the Medicare guarantee, reward the rich and famous with tax breaks, and destroy jobs.

“The idea that Congress every day is, or should be, doing something that affects Americans tomorrow is a misnomer,” one GOP leadership aide said… [Roll Call, 4/24]

    Pathetic.

The GOP has led the House for 476 days without offering a comprehensive jobs agenda.

48 percent of Americans said the most important problem facing this country today is either jobs or the economy. Five percent said it was the budget deficit. [New York Times/CBS News Poll, 4/17]

The GOP has refused to support the Buffett Rule to ensure the wealthiest pay their fair share as we work to responsibly reduce the deficit.

THE ROMNEY-RYAN BUDGET & AYN RAND

    Paul Ryan’s faith-based troubles continue

    By Steve Benen

    —————————–

This week, faculty members at one of the nation’s most notable Catholic colleges entered the fray.
    .
    .
The letter says, “We would be remiss in our duty to you and our students if we did not challenge your continuing misuse of Catholic teaching to defend a budget plan that decimates food programs for struggling families, radically weakens protections for the elderly and sick, and gives more tax breaks to the wealthiest few.”

“Your budget appears to reflect the values of your favorite philosopher, Ayn Rand, rather than the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” says the letter, which the faculty members sent to Mr. Ryan along with a copy of the Vatican’s Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church — “to help deepen your understanding of Catholic social teaching.”

    Ouch.

MARCO RUBIO: HECKUVA JOB PRESIDENT BUSH

Rubio think Bush did ‘a fantastic job’

    Steve Benen

    ———————–

Rubio’s bizarre praise notwithstanding, Bush was one of America’s worst presidents. He inherited peace and prosperity, along with a massive budget surplus and a strong national standing around the world. Over the course of eight years, Bush proceeded to have a reverse Midas touch, ruining practically everything he touched. His two terms and the events therein are, in retrospect, a sort of nightmare we’re still struggling to overcome.

To think he did “a fantastic job” is to be out of touch with reality in borderline frightening ways.

Postscript: Follow up question for Romney, who doesn’t return my calls: “Marco Rubio thinks George W. Bush did a fantastic job as president. Do you agree?”

  34. April 25, 2012 at 1:14 pm

David Axelrod on MSNBC now with Andrea Mitchell. Andrea starts with the level of enthusiasm meme, and that PBO is now considered, ‘business as usual’. Axe response is new Harvard study/poll shows Romney has 35% enthusiasm, lowest since Benedict Arnold. PBO is at 75%, damn near as high as ’08, considering those voting at 18 in ’08 are now older and the current 18 year olds are still being introduced to politics. Talk about media savvy. He corrected Andrea by citing that in NBC’s own polling PBO carried 11 of the 13 points that were questioned, not the two she honed in on. See, we got this.

OMG – I just saw the motorcade behind my building by accident! PBO was meeting with 5 students prior to his speech, but I didn’t know it was at the Union building on our side of campus. Returning from lunch, saw a huge crowd of students, lots of cop cars and then all the limos. A huge cheer went up from everyone along the street. He’s on his way to the Fieldhouse now. It was so unexpected to see him – I still have goosebumps! Back to work – with the internet on, of course!
